Strange Darling distributor is suing its marketing partner over disappointing box office
Willa Fitzgerald at an event for Reacher (2022)

The movie was given a theatrical release back in August, and JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols loved it; you can read his 9/10 review at This Link. It has since moved on to digital and physical media releases… but distributor Magenta Light Productions feels that it should have performed better at the box office, and believe it would have if the film had a better marketing campaign. So they have filed a lawsuit against their marketing partner, Spellbinder.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Magenta Light Productions, in a fraud and breach of contract lawsuit filed this week in Los Angeles Superior Court,...

Strange Darling Director Details How Miramax Almost Ruined His Movie
Image
Director Jt Mollners latest movie, Strange Darling, is undoubtedly one of the best thrillers of the year for a number of reasons, not the least of which are its unique narrative structure and commanding performances from both Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. With a 95% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, its received high praise across the board, but if Miramax had their way, Strange Darling as we know it would never have seen the light of day.

Appearing on The Business with Kim Masters podcast, Mollner discussed the early days of shooting Strange Darling, and how Miramax, the films production company, wasnt too impressed with the initial results. This took the director by surprise, who was confident that everyone involved was performing at the highest level. Those holding the purse strings disagreed, going so far as to shut down the production.

"It was very traumatic for me. It took almost...

Strange Darling Review: Willa Fitzgerald Shines In Guttural, Suspenseful Horror With Confusing Themes
Image
Willa Fitzgerald is at least impressive in Jt Mollners Strange Darling, a horror-thriller about a one-night stand gone wrong, leading to a serial killer going on a murder spree through a Northwest mountain setting. The movie has the wrong priorities thematically. Fitzgerald stars as the Lady and Kyle Gallner as the Demon, two strangers passing in the night who reveal how quickly one can lose control. Strange Darling is an effectively disturbing movie, labeled as an erotic thriller, which visualizes some interesting themes even if it distracts from them.

Stephen King's Upcoming Adaptation Labeled an 'Instant Classic' by Director
Image
We spoke with filmmaker Jt Mollner as his groundbreaking new horror thriller Strange Darling was hitting the masses. It's a wild ride from Miramax, with household name Giovanni Ribisi behind the lens this time as director of photography and producer. But fret not, as the performers in front of the camera are all first-rate, led by Willa Fitzgerald (Reacher) and Kyle Gallner (Smile). They play out a sort of nightmarish, blood-soaked first date gone wrong that keeps you guessing all the way through.

Mollner wrote Strange Darling in addition to directing and was tasked with penning the script for a highly anticipated Stephen King adaptation called The Long Walk. It's a terrifying, dystopian premise about a brutal "walking" competition, with the film's cast featuring big names like Mark Hamill and Judy Greer. "The Long Walk was a pleasure to write," Mollner told MovieWeb. "I'm a massive Stephen King fan, so it was a dream job,...

Frightfest 2024: ‘Strange Darling’ Review
Image
Stars: Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, Barbara Hershey, Ed Begley Jr., Steven Michael Quezada, Madisen Beaty, Bianca A. Santos, Bianca A. Santos, Sheri Foster, Eugenia Kuzmina, Giovanni Ribisi | Written and Directed by Jt Mollner

Strange Darling is a gripping and unconventional thriller that takes audiences on a wild, genre-bending ride through the darker corners of human psychology. Written and directed by Jt Mollner, the film blends elements of horror, suspense, and drama into a narrative that is as unpredictable as it is haunting.

The film opens with a tense, heart-pounding chase sequence that sets the tone for what is to come. From the outset, Strange Darling refuses to play by the rules of conventional storytelling. The narrative structure is fragmented, moving back and forth in time, which creates a disorienting effect that mirrors the instability of its characters.

The plot revolves around a cat-and-mouse game between a woman and her pursuer,...

Strange Darling's Jt Mollner & Giovanni Ribisi On Final Girl Trope Flipping
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. Strange Darling boasts a star-studded cast, led by Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner in gripping performances. Writer/director Jt Mollner sought to flip the final girl trope on its head with the film, while also recalling how the non-chronological story came to him "spontaneously", and the unique search to cast Fitzgerald and Gallner. Producer/director of photography Giovanni Ribisi creates a visually stunning film with a unique color palette, recalling the discussions he and Mollner had to make each chapter of the film "feel like its own universe".

Jt Mollner is back in the director's chair for one of the twistiest thrillers of the year with Strange Darling. The filmmaker previously made his directorial debut with the 2016 Western home invasion thriller Outlaws and Angels, for which he assembled a star-studded cast including Chad Michael Murray, Francesca Eastwood, and Luke Wilson. Strange Darling's Willa Fitzgerald Talks Psychological Thriller & Reacher
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. Willa Fitzgerald returns to horror in Strange Darling, a non-chronological psychological thriller about a one-night stand that turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse. Fitzgerald recalls building trust with writer/director Jt Mollner and co-star Kyle Gallner, allowing them to explore the complex characters in the film. Fitzgerald also weighs in on the possibility of a return to Prime Video's Reacher, admitting to not hearing anything, but being open to it.

Willa Fitzgerald makes her return to the horror genre with Strange Darling. Fitzgerald's first claim to fame came with a leading role in MTV's Scream: The TV Series, starring in the first two seasons of the TV expansion of the iconic slasher franchise as Emma Duval, a high school student targeted by a local slasher. The years since have seen her go on to find further success with...

Strange Darling Review | Ingenious & Visually Astounding Oddball Thriller
Image
Strange Darling delivers a unique, visually arresting horror thriller experience that keeps viewers engaged and on their toes throughout. Director Jt Mollner, cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi, and a talented crew create a darkly captivating narrative that blends suspense, humor, and sick terror together seamlessly. Filled with twists, surprises, and clever storytelling, this film is a must-see for those looking for an unforgettable cinematic experience, even if you aren't a horror fan.

Disjointed storytelling isn't always the best way to create a thriller, a genre which generally relies on building and sustaining tension; taking a nonlinear approach is risky, as it could disrupt the tension and disturb the pacing. The gritty new horror thriller Strange Darling not only takes that route but ups the ante, injecting steroids into the narrative device in ways that we won't spoil here. Stephen King has already praised Strange Darling partly named after the lovely tune that...

‘Strange Darling’ Review: A Squirm-Inducing Battle of Wills That Keeps You Guessing
Image
Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling opens with a metatextual flourish that would make Quentin Tarantino proud. The opening crawl sets the scene using the bright-red lettering and creepy, monotone narration of an old-school video nasty. It lets us know that we’re about to witness the last known movements of a prolific American serial killer. Then a title card appears, informing us that Strange Darling will be “a thriller in six chapters,” and we’re thrown into the middle of a furious car chase between a shotgun-toting man (Kyle Gallner) driving a pickup truck and a bloodied young woman (Willa Fitzgerald) in a bright red Ford Pinto. And then another title card arrives, revealing that this sequence is actually the third of those six chapters.

This sort of winking, self-aware opening feels like Strange Darling calling its shot. It’s letting us know, right away, that it thinks it’s pretty sly.

Disturbing Movie Scenes That Went Too Far
Image
We want movies to move us. We want them to soothe us, and carry us through bad times; we want them to make us laugh, make us feel connected to others, and show us beauty and splendor we've never seen before. And, sometimes, we want movies to truly, deeply disturb us.

Never mind why; maybe we're numb and want to be rattled into feeling, maybe we're feeling too much and want to channel it all somewhere, or maybe we just want to believe the world is still capable of bowling us over despite of our defenses. Whatever the case, we all sometimes take to a movie specifically because of one particular moment in it that makes us feel horrible.

Conversely, we sometimes don't want movies to disturb us, and yet they do — when we're least expecting them to, or when we're making an earnest effort to meet them halfway, they...

Interview: Simon Barrett Discusses Making the Leap to Directing Features for Seance, Defying Genre Labels and More
Image
For years now, writer Simon Barrett has been involved with several of my favorite modern horrors, including You’re Next, the criminally underappreciated Blair Witch (2016), and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as The Guest. But now, Barrett is branching out creatively, directing his first feature Seance, which follows a group of young women at an elite prep school who are being murdered by a mysterious entity after a prank amongst several of the students goes horribly wrong.

During the recent press day for Seance, I had the opportunity to speak with Barrett about his directorial debut, and we also dug into some of our own geeky tendencies as horror fans throughout our conversation. Barrett also discussed the inspirations behind the story of Seance, the importance of being good to your characters when you’re writing and/or directing, working with his incredible cast, and more.

‘Seance’ Review: Simon Barrett’s Boarding School Slasher Needs Slashing of Its Own
Image
Many things can be true at the same time, a concept that first-time feature director and long-time horror scribe Simon Barrett tries to tap into with his debut “Seance.” It hints at the possibility of two ghosts within its first five minutes and the twinned ghost stories soon expand to involve all manner of other horror-centric tropes: a creepy boarding school, a mysterious new girl, a shy new friend with (maybe) a secret, even a handsome outsider who loves to lurk — along with the usual assortment of flickering lights, bloody visions, and a basement filled with archival material that might hold some answers. Yes, many things can be true at once, but “Seance” might benefit from being pared to a more streamlined story.

Barrett’s film hints at the sleeker, darker film underneath his many genre fixations; it also sets up the possibility of a followup that could better tap into those ideas.

Image
Rlje Films has released a new trailer for Seance the upcoming horror flick comes from the mind of filmmaker Simon Barrett, who makes his directorial debut here. It stars Suki Waterhouse in the leading role. As we can see, this appears to be a blend of several genres, with slasher vibes, paranormal happenings and a muder mystery, all wrapped together.

The trailer opens with Suki Waterhouse's character Camille arriving at an exclusive all-girls academy. She is having a bit of trouble fitting in at first. We then learn about an alleged spirit that haunts the halls of the school. Camille then decides to join a group of her fellow students in a ritual to try and summon this spirit. Suki Waterhouse in Trailer for Simon Barrett's New Horror 'Seance'
Seance (2021)
"If someone dies in a bad way, the energy imprints on the surroundings. If you're sensitive, you can pick up on it..." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror film called Seance, marking the feature directorial debut of writer Simon Barrett. Camille is the new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six girls invite her to join them in a late-night ritual, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who haunts their halls. But before morning, one of them is dead. This seems like a much darker, supernatural twist on The Craft, or maybe it's something else. Starring Suki Waterhouse, Madisen Beaty, Ella-Rae Smith, Inanna Sarkis, Seamus Patterson, and Marina Stephenson-Kerr. Hmmm. I was expecting this to look better than it does, it's not so scary. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Simon Barrett's Seance, direct from YouTube...

Liana Liberato and Kara Hayward in To the Stars (2019)
“To The Stars” Highlights Liana Liberato In An Uneven Melodrama
Liana Liberato and Kara Hayward in To the Stars (2019)
Melodrama has somewhat become a relic of cinema’s past. To be sure, we get melodramatic movies still being released, but true melodrama has largely gone away. The new movie To the Stars seeks to bring melodramas back, and up until the tail end of the third act, it succeeds. Some solid cinematography, a really strong turn from Liana Liberato, and even a small sense of mystery buoys it for a good long while. Then, as it comes in for a landing, the wheels fall off and it crashes in a big way. It’s a shame, too, as it prevents the flick from earning a recommendation that it had in the bag, moments before. The film is a drama, set in 1960’s Oklahoma, and specifically a very small town. It’s the sort of town where everyone is under scrutiny, the folks consider themselves god fearing, and judgment comes quick.

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Sound Artist Breaks Down the Insane Noises of the Manson Murders
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Quentin Tarantino movies are defined as much by their sound design as they are by the director’s trademark writing, and over the filmmaker’s last three movies a big part of the Tarantino sound has been crafted by supervising foley artist Gary A. Hecker. For “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” it fell on Hecker to figure out how to create the head-smashing, dog-biting, and flame-throwing murders that make up the movie’s climax. The scene in question finds Manson cult members Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison), Tex Watson (Austin Butler), and Patricia Krenwinkel (Madisen Beaty) breaking into the home of Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) in order to kill him. The “Manson murders” are upended when the killers run into Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who along with his dog dispose of the cult members in brutally horrific ways.

Hecker recently spoke with Vulture writer Jordan Crucchiola about the sounds that...

Boots Riley Calls Out Tarantino’s ‘Hollywood’ for Not Depicting Manson Family as White Supremacists
[Editor’s note: Boots Riley’s exclusive follow-up statement to IndieWire has been added to the bottom of the post]

“Sorry to Bother You” writer-director Boots Riley returned to Twitter after a nearly three-month hiatus to share a criticism he has with Quentin Tarantino’s depiction of the Manson Family cult members in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Actors such as Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler, Maya Hawke, and Lena Dunham star in the film as Manson followers, many of which are based on real people. Riley took issue with Tarantino’s script for depicting the cult members as hippies with liberal beliefs and not at all dealing with their racism and right-wing views.

“The Manson Family were overt white supremacists who tried to start a race war with the goal of killing black folks,” Riley wrote to his followers. “They weren’t ‘hippies’ spouting left critiques of media. They were rightwingers. This fact flips Tarantino’s allegory on its head.
