Celebrate This Notable Day in Dracula's History With One of the Most Underrated Vampire Movies on Streaming
Image
If you needed a reason to dig into some Dracula lore, you’re in luck. Today, July 24, is one of the days from the doomed passage of the Demeter — as first penned by Bram Stoker in the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from the timeless gothic novel, Dracula. But reading isn’t the only way you can bring the memory of Dracula to life, as a movie that centers around this specific chapter alone is now streaming on Paramount+. While other titles like Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Robbert Eggers’ Nosferatu capture the tale of love, lust, and the undead, André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter leaves these things behind and focuses on the pulse-pounding terror faced by the tale’s titular crew.

In last year’s Nosferatu, Eggers simply brushed over this rich and bloody chapter from Stoker’s 1897 novel, but fear not,...

Johnny Depp’s Upcoming Movies: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is on the Card?
Image
His life and career may have met a significant downfall over the recent years, but Johnny Depp is very much back to turn the tables and mesmerize his audiences to the core – both with his exceptional acting chops as well as his impeccable charms. For one, he is all set to return to the screens with quite a few projects lined up.

Though he is renowned for his Jack Sparrow role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, that very Disney saga left him alone during his messy divorce with Amber Heard. This had him pledging that he wouldn’t return to the lore, no matter what.

But rumors have sprung up once again, with sources pulling fans’ hopes up about his return in the next installment of the film series. Of course, official...

Gary Oldman Recalls What Convinced Him to Play Bram Stoker's Dracula
Image
Excited at a chance to work with Francis Ford Coppola, Gary Oldman said his audition script for Bram Stoker's Dracula was only icing on the cake. He reflected on his experience working with the director, and how that film highlighted his impressive, eclectic career.

Gary Oldman wouldn't have starred in Bram Stoker's Dracula if not for its director, Francis Ford Coppola. Oldman said his reservations stem from previous adaptations of the character, especially the iconic versions from esteemed actors. "Let's put it this way. I didn't need to play Dracula," he told Josh Horowitz. "It had never even been on my radar to do it or even consider it or think about it. But it was Coppola and I thought that he would do something very interesting with it. And so I felt carried."

"Everyone in this world and his mother had played Dracula," Oldman also quipped, aware...

James Wan provides a hopeful and surprising update on The Crooked Man solo film
Image
The fourth (and supposedly final) film in The Conjuring series started with the 2013 movie is supposedly coming to an end with The Conjuring: Last Rites, due in theaters this September. But while the mainline movies centering around demonologist couple Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren might be coming to an end, that doesn't mean the overarching The Conjuring Universe is finished.

In fact, I'd imagine the billion dollar-grossing franchise still has a lot of life left in it, with New Line Cinema head Richard Brenner even calling Last Rites simply the end of "Phase One." James Wan, who directed the first two movies, recently provided an update on at least one potential future film, a spinoff centering on the Crooked Man introduced in The Conjuring 2.

Chatting with Entertainment Weekly as part of the outlet's in-depth Last Rites profile, Wan mentioned his hopes that a movie about The...

James Wan Hasn’t Given Up Hope On a ‘Crooked Man’ Solo Movie
James Wan
It’s been almost 10 years since the release of James Wan’s The Conjuring 2, which introduced the character of The Crooked Man, portrayed by Javier Botet. A solo spinoff movie for the character was first announced back in 2017, but it of course ended up being The Nun who became the film’s spinoff star. So what’s the status of that Crooked Man movie here in 2025?

Chatting with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites later this year, franchise creator/producer James Wan revealed that while there are still no current plans for The Crooked Man to get his own movie, Wan himself is still keeping the hope alive.

Wan tells the outlet, “I still have a movie in my head that I would hopefully love to get off the ground one day, but we’ll see. I get fans that reach out to me every now and then,...

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Halloween Tales’ Review
Image
Stars: Macarena Gómez, Mario Mayo, Javier Botet, Christian Thomas, David Pareja, Lucía de la Fuente, Carmen del Rosal, Zorion Eguileor | Written and Directed by Kiko Prada

Sometimes when you watch a film you know it’s right up your street from the get-go and that was certainly the case for Halloween Tales. Opening with credits that look like they jumped out of an 80s Italian horror, with a soundtrack that sounds like a homage to John Carpenter, I was hooked immediately.

Halloween Tales, also known under its original title Historias de Halloween, is a horror anthology from Spain that is obviously influenced by the likes of US productions like Creephow (the film uses comics as a framing device like that King-inspired anthology) and, obviously, The Twilight Zone, but – like many Spanish genre fare, also the work of Chicho Ibáñez Serrador.

The wraparound follows Luis (Christian Thomas), a boy whose mother,...

‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Chris Walley, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Martin Furulund, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Javier Botet | Written by Bragi F. Schut, Zak Olkewicz | Directed by André Øvredal

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a chilling horror film that delivers a uniquely atmospheric take on the classic Dracula mythos. Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the doomed voyage of the Demeter, a Russian schooner transporting a mysterious cargo from Carpathia to England. This narrative decision to focus on a small portion of the novel allows the film to dive deep into the slow-building dread and claustrophobia of being trapped at sea with an unspeakable horror.

The film begins with the Demeter’s crew discovering that they have been tasked with transporting a set of crates, each filled with soil from Transylvania. They are unaware that...

Fanged Fury: 6 of the Scariest Vampire Designs in Horror Movies
Image
Stories mutate over time, adapting to both storytellers and their audience in often unpredictable ways. This is precisely why folks will still flock to creature features about monsters they’ve seen a million times before, as it’s always fun to find out how filmmakers have managed to update the source material. And when it comes to classic monsters that have gone through cinematic makeovers, it’s hard to compete with the good-old vampire.

From foreign sex symbols to zombie-like hordes and even mindless bat-monsters, vampires have proven to be an oddly versatile creature for filmmakers of every disposition. And in honor of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake revamping one of the most iconic depictions of blood-sucking ghouls in cinema history, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest vampire designs in horror!

As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion, but be...

What Nosferatu Does Better Than Every Other Recent Dracula Movie
Image
In 2024, we have no need to try and make vampires happen. They have already happened for at least a century, and they're very much still happening: stories about vampires have saturated just about every medium there is. Weirdly, though, we may have to work a little harder to make the vampire happen again — as in the most legendary bloodsucker of all: Dracula.

In fairness, it may not be Dracula himself whose popularity is waning, but rather movies about him. Ever since his screen debut in the lost film "Dracula's Death" in 1921, barely a decade has gone by without some iteration of the Count turning up in cinemas, which is partially why the character has undergone so many various iterations. Like all fictional creations who've been built to last, Dracula endures by embracing change. Yet there can always been too much of a good thing; the last several films to prominently...

The Mummy Is Getting Reimagined by Blumhouse and Acclaimed Horror Movie Director
Image
Universal Pictures owns the rights to many popular titles but also characters. One of its franchises includes the Universal Classic Monsters, which the studio has been producing since 1913, and a new adaptation is being made of one of its most popular characters: The Mummy.

The Mummy tells the story of a mummified ancient Egyptian priest who is accidentally resurrected. The character has seen many adaptations starting 1932's The Mummy, with Boris Karloff, as well as the modern adaptations starring Brendan Fraser between 1999 and 2008, and the failed 2017 film starring Tom Cruise. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are resurrecting The Mummy with the help of Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin.

Best Dracula Actors – the most memorable fanged Count
Image
With The Last Voyage of the Demeter now on home video, Dracula is once again on everyone’s mind. In it, Javier Botet plays a horrific version of the count that’s far removed from the recent, classic-style version played by Nicolas Cage in Renfield. How will he stack up against some of the best versions of the fanged Count? First, we must come up with our list of the Best Dracula Actors!

Christian Camargo – Penny Dreadful (2016)

While Universal was trying to figure out how to create their Dark Universe, over on Showtime, Penny Dreadful was already doing a fantastic job beating them to the punch. The series pulled together literary versions of Frankenstein’s monster, the wolfman, Dorian Gray, and eventually Dracula himself. Christian Camargo played Dr. Alexander Sweet in Season Three, who begins to seduce Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. It is revealed later that this doctor is,...

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter | The mystery of its missing UK release

Dracula-adjacent horror The Last Voyage Of The Demeter is only just getting a cinema screening in the UK, over a year after it screened into in the US. A look at its mysterious absence from our screens:

Update: Two months after we published this feature about The Last Voyage Of The Demeter never making it to UK screens, the film is now available to watch at home! It appears that you can currently only buy the film on digital retailers, but a rent option often appears after a few weeks.

Coincidentally, Salem’s Lot is also being released in cinemas this week, so if you like vampire films, you’re having a great week, I bet.

What Alien Romulus' Most Unexpected Creature Looks Like In Real Life
Image
This article contains major spoilers for "Alien: Romulus."

Ridley Scott's "Alien" from 1979 is one of the most important films ever made: a gripping sci-fi horror film about the crew of the commercial star freighter Nostromo, who investigate an alien distress call only to be attacked by a grotesquely sexual nightmare creature that spawns a gigantic being known as the Xenomorph. Given the infancy of digital effects at the time, the Xenomorph was played by Nigerian visual artist Bolaji Badejo. Standing 6'10" and donning an impressive suit modeled after the designs of H.R. Giger, the practicality of the Xenomorph suit put the creature right in front of the actors, adding to the fear factor while also showcasing a masterclass in monster FX.

6'2" special effects supervisor Tom Woodruff Jr. donned the Xenomorph suit for several "Alien" sequels beginning with "Aliens," but when Ridley Scott returned to the franchise with "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant,...

Bill Skarsgrd Recalls 'Hateful' Opinions of Pennywise: 'I Was Just a Kid'
Image
Taking on the role of Pennywise was nerve-wracking for Bill Skarsgrd, who faced online backlash for his look as the iconic clown. Skarsgrd, now 33, recalls the mean comments and losing sleep over the role, but it ultimately unlocked his confidence for future challenges. Despite initial hate, It was a critical and financial hit, solidifying Skarsgrd's place as Pennywise and paving the way for more roles.

Bill Skarsgrd might be returning to the role that made him famous in the HBO Max prequel series, Welcome to Derry, but its a part he was extremely nervous about following the online backlash he received in 2016 after an early image was shared by Warner Bros. to promote the 2017 release of It. Skarsgrd portrayed the role of Pennywise in Andy Muschiettis reimagining of the Stephen King classic in 2017 and 2019 respectively. The film, which was split into two parts, would go on to gross a collective $1.1 billion dollars,...

Bill Skarsgård's New Horror Movie Can Redeem The Monster Of A 2023 Bomb
Image
Bill Skarsgård's Nosferatu could redeem the failures of past vampire movies, offering a fresh take on the iconic horror villain. The upcoming remake focuses on Count Orlok and the eerie atmosphere of the original, promising a spine-chilling experience for fans. With Robert Eggers at the helm, expect a visually stunning film that pays homage to the classic while bringing a new twist to the vampire genre.

Bill Skarsgård is quickly becoming one of the first names in horror, and his latest monster movie Nosferatu could redeem a specific 2023 horror flop. Nosferatu's disturbingly creepy Count Orlok in the gothic vampire tale from director Robert Eggers will not be the first vampire Bill Skarsgård has played, but it could be his most iconic horror role since Pennywise in the 2017 remake of Stephen King's It. However, it's a more recent vampire movie that stands as the most direct comparison to Nosferatu,...

No matter how integral a certain film may be to the history of cinema, no matter how widely beloved it might be by a mass audience, and no matter how politically and sociologically relevant it may have been to the modern world, there is always an error, a nitpick, an omission, or a production problem that can be included. No work of art is going to be 100% unassailable, largely because a wide swath of humanity will be able to see it, and no two people are going to feel exactly the same way about it.

In modern parlance, the closest critics and audiences may be able to come to a measurable consensus is the approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The way Rotten Tomatoes works: professional critics, writing for a broad gallery of approved outlets, submit a review to Rt, selecting it to be "fresh" or "rotten.

Luc Besson To Direct Dracula Movie Starring Caleb Landry Jones And Christoph Waltz
Image
Dracula will never die — at least as long as Hollywood has anything to say about it. According to Variety, director Luc Besson is helming a new "Dracula" film starring Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds") and Caleb Landry Jones (who last starred in Besson's "Dogman).

Besson's "Dracula" joins a crowded pack. 2023 saw the release of "Renfield," an action-comedy featuring Nicolas Cage as Dracula but focusing on Nicholas Hoult as the Count's undead assistant. Another film, released only a few months later, stuck more closely to the Lord of Vampires' horror roots: "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" adapted the chapter of Bram Stoker's original novel where Dracula sails to London in a coffin and murders the ship's crew. That film's Dracula (Javier Botet) was a batlike demon, a far cry from the affable Cage.

Coming up soon is "Abigail," a reimagining of Universal Pictures' 1936 film "Dracula's Daughter." And on Christmas...

Luc Besson sinks teeth into new Dracula movie with Christoph Waltz & Caleb Landry Jones
Image
Luc Besson will helm a movie based on Dracula titled Dracula – A Love Tale, dubbed “a big-budget reimagining” of the character. It will star Christoph Waltz and Caleb Landry Jones, who starred in Besson’s Dogman, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

While little is actually known about Luc Besson’s Dracula movie, Deadline did report that it “has an origin story element to it exploring in a little more depth the gothic romance between Prince Vladimir and his wife whose loss turns him to forsake God and become a vampire.” It, too, is expected to have “some epic and potentially spectacular set pieces.”

The news comes out of the European Film Market, the trade fair held during the Berlin Film Festival. While Besson has never won Berlin’s top honor, the Golden Bear, his Dogman did make a splash at Venice, receiving a standing ovation despite the controversy surrounding his invitation.

One Of 2023's Biggest Horror Flops Gets Streaming Release Date
Image
The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a horror film based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, is set to release on Paramount+ and Showtime on February 11, 2024. The movie, which received praise from high-profile horror voices like Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King, disappointed at the box office, recouping only $21.8 million against a $45 million budget. Despite its underwhelming performance, there is a possibility that the film could find redemption and attract a wider audience once it begins streaming, potentially sparking interest in a sequel.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the Dracula movie that became one of 2023’s biggest box office disappointments, has secured its official streaming release date. Based on the chapter "The Captain's Log" from Bram Stoker’s iconic novel, The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the titular ship as it attempts to make the voyage from Transylvania to London with Dracula aboard. The Last Voyage of the Demeter Originally Featured a Van Helsing Appearance
Image
The Last Voyage of the Demeter producer Bradley J. Fischer confirmed that Dracula’s nemesis Van Helsing was originally going to appear at the end of the horror thriller movie.

Speaking with Syfy Wire, Fischer detailed what would have happened in the cut Van Helsing cameo in The Last Voyage of the Demeter. "We went through a lot of different approaches to the story, but nothing that was wildly different than the movie that we ended up with," Fischer said. "We actually had one ending for quite a while. The scene in the tavern was Clemens [Corey Hawkins] being approached by a strange, shadowy dude, who starts talking to him, seems to have some knowledge of the experiences that he went through, and introduces himself as Van Helsing. Then we kind of left it there."

Bloody Disgusting Carves Up the 10 Best Kills in 2023’s Horror Movies
Image
Horror is the gift that keeps giving, especially when it comes to inventive carnage on screen. On that front, it’s been a stellar year for memorable kills in horror thanks to a slew of franchise entries, original slashers, surprising takes on demonic possession, and more.

What might be most surprising, in the best possible way, is how 2023 horror pushed boundaries when it came to on-screen deaths. 2023 horror wasn’t afraid to get ruthless when it came to shattering the taboo of killing kids. Nor was it afraid to deliver unforgettable moments on screen through unexpected demises that made us groan, cheer, recoil, and even laugh.

We’re saluting the ten best kills in 2023 horror movies, which means massive spoilers ahead.

2024 Oscar Craft Shortlists: The Big Winners Are ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Society of the Snow’
Image
The Oscar shortlists were released December 21 ahead of the nominations on January 23, 2024, and here we’re covering the crafts of makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound, and visual effects.

The big winners — appearing on three lists — were Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon”, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,”, and J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow”.

In fact, “Napoleon,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow” have the potential to be late-season craft juggernauts in competition with “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie,” which scored on two lists (original score and sound).

Also making two lists were Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” (makeup and hairstyling and sound), James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (score and visual effects), Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” (makeup and hairstyling and sound), Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One...

Bill Skarsgård's Nosferatu Transformation Is So Significant, It Looks Digital (But Isn't)
Image
Bill Skarsgård's transformation into Count Orlok in the Nosferatu remake is so surprising that viewers may think it was done digitally. Skarsgård went to great lengths for the role, including losing a significant amount of weight and working with an opera coach to lower his voice. The potential success of Skarsgård's portrayal could break the curse of recent unsuccessful Dracula movie adaptations.

Nosferatu remake director Robert Eggers has suggested Bill Skarsgård's transformation into the movie’s villain will make audiences second guess how it was done. Based on the iconic 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, Egger’s forthcoming remake will see Skarsgård assume the role of Count Orlok, a horrifying vampire based on Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. Currently slated for a December 2024 release, the adaptation is also set to feature an all-star cast including Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.

Robert Eggers Says His Nosferatu Is A Gothic Horror Movie That Will Actually Scare You
Image
While vampire films have struggled to take a bite out of the box office lately, the patriarch of blood-sucker cinema, "Nosferatu," is coming back to show all those fanged foundlings how it's done. This new re-imagining of F.W. Murnau's officially unauthorized 1922 "Dracula" adaptation "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" (the second of its kind after Werner Herzog's 1979 horror film "Nosferatu the Vampyre") hails from writer/director Robert Eggers -- and if the filmmaker is to be believed, this will be a truly terrifying affair to help wipe away the memories of all those lackluster movies about creatures of the night.

Eggers made a splash terrorizing audiences with his feature-length debut "The Witch" before helming "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman," both of which are frequently trippy and full of bizarre visuals and ghastly violence but aren't really trying too hard to scare you. That won't be the case with "Nosferatu,...

Crimson Peak (2015) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Revisited covering Crimson Peak was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

As of now, I think my love for Guillermo Del Toro as a filmmaker is well established. I adore the man and his work. He plays in my favorite sandboxes, with monsters, vampires, kaiju, giant robots, and in the gothic world whenever he feels like it. The man is after my heart with every single movie he makes. In 2015, he went ahead and asked himself, what does this girl love that she hasn’t gotten a whole lot of lately? And he answered with a gothic love story with ghosts in a Hammer-esque setting in a mansion with walls that bleed and memories imbedded in its construction. So, if you didn’t guess from all that, this...

The Last Voyage of the Demeter comes to Blu-ray and DVD with deleted scenes and alternate opening
Image
Movie-goers rejected Dracula not just once but twice this uear. Universal released two well-reviewed Dracula projects – the horror comedy Renfield and the more serious The Last Voyage of the Demeter – and both of them tanked at the box office. Renfield couldn’t even crack the $27 million mark at the global box office, and Demeter barely made it over the $20 million mark. Trying to recoup some of their losses, Universal gave The Last Voyage of the Demeter a VOD release just two and a half weeks after it reached theatres. Now it has been announced that the film will be receiving a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on October 17th – and it’s coming to home video with deleted scenes and an alternate opening.

Escaping development hell twenty years after the script was first written (Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz receive writing credits on the finished film), The Last Voyage of the Demeter...

“30 Coins” Fantastic Fest Review – Season 2 Plunges Straight Into the Winding Depths of Hell
Image
Writer/Director Álex de la Iglesia, co-writing with Jorge Guerricaechevarría, launched a unique biblical horror story in “30 Coins,” unfurling an overarching battle of good versus evil over the powerful set of silver that Judas once received in his betrayal of Jesus. By the inaugural season’s conclusion, the rural town of Pedraza was left devastated, its residents scattered or worse, and our protagonists in dire straits. “30 Coins” Season 2 hits the ground running in the first two episodes screened for critics at Fantastic Fest, plunging viewers into the deep end of Hell as it lays the groundwork for a densely packed season with apocalyptic stakes.

Season 2 picks up immediately where Season 1 ended, with the restored collection of silver scattered once more thanks to the sacrifice of rogue priest Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández). His body gets collected by a black arts practitioner who sets about prepping his body for a resurrection ritual.

One Of The Most Iconic Draculas Immortalized In Hypnotic Art
Image
Christopher Lee's portrayal of Dracula brought a more menacing and intimidating interpretation to the character, with bloodshot eyes and a piercing gaze. Lee played Dracula for longer than any other actor, leaving an indelible mark on the character in seven Hammer Horror films. Despite not being the first or most famous actor to play Dracula, Lee's portrayal balanced the character with an air of aristocratic charm, making him a suave and sophisticated figure.

New art captures the most iconic Dracula in hypnotic detail. Bela Lugosi was the first actor to play the prototypical vampire on-screen in the 1931 film, Dracula, an adaptation of Bram Stoker's gothic horror novel. Over the subsequent years, countless actors have played Dracula in movies and TV shows, including John Carradine, Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, and Gary Oldman. Some of the more recent examples from 2023 include Nicolas Cage in Renfield and Javier Botet in The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
