Along with giving Holland some breathing room from opening two prospective blockbusters within a week of one another, the adjustment also has key repercussions for exhibitor operations. Before Sony’s scheduling change, the next live-action “Spider-Man” would have released just one week after “The Odyssey.” That film continues Nolan’s decades-long relationship with Imax, shooting with the company’s powerful cameras and negotiating a dedicated theatrical window in its premium auditoriums. Presumably, Sony is also looking to release the new “Spider-Man” to Imax and other premium large format screens, as it has with its previous Marvel Comics adaptations.

Sony Pictures announced Friday that the Marvel superhero’s next feature is now set for theatrical release on July 31, 2026, a week later than previously scheduled. Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is helming the movie that is currently untitled.

This change gives the project extra distance from the release of director Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which also stars Holland and hits theaters July 17, 2026. Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron round out the star-studded cast for Universal’s feature adaptation of Homer’s epic poem.

Also currently set for release on July 31, 2026, is Paramount’s animated feature Paw Patrol 3.

Holland was last seen onscreen as the heroic web-slinger in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which surpassed $1.9 billion at the global box office.

What’s so special about July 31 over July 24? It’s the last Friday in July, which essentially where Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine played to an opening of $211.4M domestic, $444.7M worldwide.

There’s something else though: Spidey on its old date was going in the immediate week wake of Christopher Nolan’s new Matt Damon movie The Odyssey on July 17 from Universal. On its new date, Spidey is two weeks from Nolan’s feature take of the Homer epic, and now going up against Spin Master/Paramount’s Paw Patrol 3.

It can also be inferred that Nolan will at least get his fair share of Imax screens — for about two weeks. Likely another reason why Spider-Man moved.

Ahead of the Oscar nominations being unveiled, USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Adobe Foundation have released a new edition of their Inclusion List, with a focus on movies.

The top-scoring movies for supporting gender inclusion on screen and behind the cameras were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. For race and ethnicity, the top-scoring movies were Joy Ride, A Thousand and One, The Color Purple, House Party and The Blackening.

In an earlier Inclusions List, 476 theatrically released movies from 2019 to 2023 were analyzed, with on screen and behind-the-camera data used to determine the 150 most inclusive films in that four-year period. The latest Inclusion List builds on that ranking with a new set of films from 2023.

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.

The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.

“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.

Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.

The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).

A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.

The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.

The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.

Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.

The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

Out of 400 evaluated directors, five were named the most inclusive: Catherine Hardwicke, Olivia Wilde, Destin Daniel Cretton, Reinaldo Marcus Green and Kasi Lemmons.

Eight editors were noted for their work in film over the past five years, including Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, Catrin Hedström, Hilda Rasula, Harry Yoon, Mary Jo Markey.

Despite what's felt like endless rumours about Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 4 plans, we're no closer to knowing what to expect from the wall-crawler's next MCU movie.

Over the past 24 hours, the usual suspects on social media have hinted at Daredevil making an appearance; however, with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man fast approaching, they may, in fact, be referring to Charlie Cox's role in the upcoming animated series.

Regardless, scooper @MyTimeToShineH has suggested that major Spider-Man 4 casting news is on the horizon after revealing the movie's "female lead and main villain [have] already [been] found."

When this was put to The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez, he simply responded, "Remember when I mentioned the working title was Blue Oasis?"

At the time, the implication was that "Blue Oasis" is a reference to Spider-Man: Blue, a story recounting Peter Parker's romance with Gwen Stacy. If so, his comments suggest she's the "female lead" referred to above.

MCU is slowly preparing for the release of two highly anticipated ‘Avengers’ movies, ‘Doomsday’ and its sequel, ‘Secret Wars.’ Both movies are going to be a part of phase 6 of the MCU and even though we still don’t know what the plot will be, we can assume that the movie will adapt ‘Time Runs Out’ and ‘Secret Wars’ storylines, at least partially.

Marvel Studios first announced ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ in July 2022, with Destin Daniel Cretton set to direct and Jeff Loveness writing. However, by November 2023, both left the project, and Michael Waldron took over as the writer. At the July 2024 Sdcc, the film was renamed ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with Robert Downey Jr. cast as Doctor Doom, replacing Jonathan Majors’s Kang.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a very different place if these directors had been chosen to develop movies for Marvel Studios. The director is one of the most important figures in the development of any movie, but for Marvel Studios, this position is even more crucial. Some of Marvel's directors have become household names as they have helped to produce the most successful film franchise of all time, but many of them weren't Marvel Studios' only choice when planning the McU's projects.

Over the years, Marvel Studios has built strong relationships with brilliant directors, including Jon Favreau, the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Peyton Reed, Ryan Coogler and Destin Daniel Cretton, among others. Had many of these notable directors chosen not to join the MCU, however, Marvel Studios had other options. Despite the seemingly endless rumours, we don't really know anything about Spider-Man 4. Will Peter Parker battle Knull with Venom by his side? Could Scorpion and Shocker return after previously appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming? And what about a team-up with Daredevil?

We have no idea at this stage, though all signs point to the wall-crawler donning his black suit from the comics. Avengers: Doomsday is being released before Spider-Man 4 and Tom Holland is expected to be one of the movie's leads.

Needless to say, we find it hard to imagine the Russo Brothers not taking that opportunity to put the hero in his alien costume!

Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with...

Marvel Studios has faced its fair share of challenges since the Multiverse Saga began. For starters, the studio has had to contend with a change of CEOs at Disney, a pandemic, and 2023's Hollywood strikes. 

It's no wonder then that these last couple of Phases have felt a tad disjointed. New characters have been introduced in movies and TV shows only to be M.I.A. ever since. Meanwhile, sequels and threequels which once seemed a given have yet to materialise. 

Today, insider Daniel Richtman brings word that neither Doctor Strange 3 nor Shang-Chi 2 will start shooting until 2026. 

It's unclear whether Destin Daniel Cretton plans to move straight from Spider-Man 4 to the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel, though it's certainly possible. As for the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness follow-up, it's previously been reported that Sam Raimi will return to direct.
