Bruce Campbell Discusses His “Hysteria!” Character Arc and Reveals What He’d Like to See in Season 2
Peacock’s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” plunged its small Michigan town into full-blown Satanic Panic. Thanks to its teen protagonists and an atypically sympathetic police chief, order is mostly restored in Happy Hollow by season’s end.
Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) had a particularly stressful arc in showrunners Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman’s (The Orville) inaugural season; the observant yet patient small-town lawman nearly succumbed to the hysteria himself and rallied to survive a near-death confrontation with The Reverend (Garret Dillahunt). The finale wraps up the season’s overarching questions, yet leaves lingering signs that The Reverend and Tracy Whitehead’s (Anna Camp) devious machinations still have roots in Happy Hollow.
Considering that Campbell plays his cop character with unconventional kindness and is billed as a guest star, not series regular, where does that leave the actor regarding the future of the series?

Famous horror actor Bruce Campbell is making his return to television horror with the new Peacock series “Hysteria!” The show marks Campbell’s first major horror television role since ending his run on “Ash vs Evil Dead” in 2018. In “Hysteria!,” Campbell plays Chief Dandridge, a police chief investigating strange disappearances in a town gripped by fears of satanic influences.
At 66 years old, Campbell is taking on a very different role than his most famous character, Ash Williams from “The Evil Dead” franchise. Instead of playing an unwitting hero facing supernatural chaos, Chief Dandridge enters as an established authority figure meant to solve the town’s problems. Campbell said this change was an “intriguing contrast” that brought “maturity and gravitas” to his horror work.

For those about to rock, we rebuke you! The very real nightmare of adolescence collides with a hellacious 40-year-old conspiracy theory in Hysteria!, Peacock‘s chilling dramedy that plays like My-So-Called Life meets the Salem Witch Trials. Set in a Midwestern suburb amid the late-‘80s “Satanic Panic” that had parents convinced hard rock was a force of evil, the chaos kicks off after a high-school football star goes missing. Seizing on the town’s sudden paranoia about cult culture, teen outcast Dylan (Emjay Anthony) and his only pals make a play for popularity by adding a Satanic slant to their struggling heavy metal band. But instead of just drawing a crowd with their pentagrams and songs about the devil, they draw the suspicion of a no-nonsense cop (Bruce Campbell), a zealous church lady (Anna Camp), and Dylan’s freaked-out mom (Julie Bowen) who all begin to fear that the...

The last few years have probably felt familiar to many, with a constant blame game in the media attributing violence and crime to one thing or another. Those who lived through the 1980s likely remember the Satanic Panic that spread through the United States, where politicians blamed all sorts of things on kids and teenagers becoming obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. This panic was reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials, which in turn were like the Red Scare of the 1950s. Now, we get to look back at this crazy era through a modern lens, thanks to Hysteria!

What marks the devil? Is it a hulking figure with burnt skin and massive horns? Is it a personal enemy or unseen force? What is hell, if not a high school hallway, haunted by inner and outer demons that can only be escaped when you walk out the door?

Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.
Synopsis: "When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a...

‘Hysteria!’ Stars Julie Bowen and Bruce Campbell Debate the ‘Horror and the Beauty’ of Satanic Panic
Julie Bowen and Bruce Campbell star as, respectively, a suburban mom and a seen-it-all cop in Peacock’s “Hysteria!,” which turns the very real Satanic Panic of the ’80s into a rollicking, heavy-metal flavored comedy about demons.
The two actors, who already lived through the 1980s, had very different experiences during the era. Bowen told TheWrap she grew up in a conservative family and was afraid of supposedly Satanic things like hard rock and Dungeons and Dragons. Interestingly, Campbell, who became a chainsaw-wielding horror icon in Sam Raimi’s 1981 indie “Evil Dead,” didn’t like heavy metal music either — or most of the decade, for that matter.
TheWrap spoke with both stars about revisiting the time period and how they’ve been pitching the show to their friends and family.

When people think of Julie Bowen as an actress, Modern Family often comes to mind before anything else. Julie played the lovable role of Claire Dunphy on the show for 11 seasons starting in 2009. The sitcom is highly revered for being one of the most progressive TV shows in recent history.
Modern Family did so well that it earned tons of awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Here’s what Julie just admitted about breaking free from the role of Claire.

Anna Camp’s devout Christian Tracy Whitehead is at the frontlines of stirring up a Satanic Panic frenzy in Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller “Hysteria!” Her central targets? High school outcasts and close friends Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony), Jordy (Chiara Aurelia), and Spud (Kezii Curtis).
That the trio is part of a heavy metal band draws Tracy’s ire, setting the stage for paranoia, mistrust, and occult madness when they decide to lean into their Satanic reputation. That backfires when a series of bizarre kidnappings, murders, and supernatural events trace back to the friends. If you’re a circumspect first-time TV creator given vaguely free rein, you have two choices (for the purposes of this exercise).
One, you can render your vision in the most easily digestible way possible, to make a series that is clearly promotable and satisfyingly resolved, in the hopes of engineering a hit and getting to make other shows in the future.
Or two, you can throw every idea in your brain in the general vicinity of the screen, aware that success is never guaranteed and you may never have another shot.
Sure, the result of the second course of action might be complete and utter chaos that audiences won’t know how to process and networks won’t know how to sell. Still, at least you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing you left nothing on the table.

Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” is set to tackle the era of Satanic Panic, with heavy metal and actual Satanism sowing generational division in a small conservative town in Michigan. And what’s Michigan horror without actor Bruce Campbell?
The actor guest stars as Chief Dandridge in the series, set to premiere all episodes on Friday, October 18, 2024.
“Hysteria!” follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity, written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). Caught in the middle of the mounting tension between adults and teens is Campbell’s police chief.
Unlike his most iconic character, Ash Williams, Chief Dandridge prefers logic and science. Though he isn’t your typical small-town police chief. That’s because he treats the teens with respect and compassion, a far cry from the typical parents in suburban set ’80s horror.

I don't know if it's just because I'm really missing the show or there's more to it, but watching the Hysteria! on Peacock trailer is just giving me Stranger Things vibes and I'm so here for it. And though the Netflix series is already dark, this one looks to be even darker. So I think that if you're a fellow Stranger Things fan like me, you'll want to check out Hysteria! too!
The new horror thriller premieres Friday, Oct. 18, 2024 with all 8 episodes on Peacock. That's right, it's going to be a binge-watch. I personally think these episodes should have had more of a weekly release instead. But, that's what the streamer wants I guess. We shared the trailer below:
Do you see what I mean? Just the sets and being in the '80s time period is giving off Stranger Things, for sure. The two shows have a very similar look to them.

Peacock’s upcoming series Hysteria! shows a town in the grips of a Satanic Panic — emphasis on the “satanic” part.
The streamer has released a full trailer for the show, which premieres Oct. 18 and centers on three high schoolers (Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis) whose heavy-metal band decides to lean into the fear caused when the high school quarterback goes missing and a pentagram is painted on the teen’s garage. Their makeover as satanists, however, unleashes forces — both among their peers and, possibly, with something otherworldly — that soon spin out of their control.
The trailer — which greatly expands on an earlier teaser — also shows a teenage girl (Nikki Hahn) being abducted by a creepy masked intruder and a woman (Julie Bowen) being stalked by an unseen entity. Watch it below.
The show’s regular cast also includes Anna Camp, horror icon Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North,...

The streamer has released a teaser and set an Oct. 18 premiere date for Hysteria!, a drama in which a high-school heavy metal band decides to capitalize on the panic — then find themselves in deeper than they meant to be. In addition to streaming on Peacock, the series premiere will simulcast on USA Network and Syfy; USA will also air subsequent episodes on Friday nights.
The teaser (watch it below) shows suburban mom Julie Bowen (Modern Family) dancing around her kitchen to Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” when an apparent earthquake disrupts her reverie. A demonic face staring out from the microwave further darkens the mood.

The “Satanic Panic” era in the ‘80s is not the best time in our country’s history. That’s when an older generation believed that Satanism was running rampant and young kids who liked Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music were somehow responsible for horrific crimes. But it does make good fodder for TV series, such as “Hysteria.”
As seen in the teaser for “Hysteria,” the series features a small town in the ‘80s that is seemingly normal and quaint, but might very well be a location where the Devil decides to come back.
