Let’s take a trip back to November 5, 2007.
“Crank Dat (Soulja Boy)” is the #1 song on the Billboard charts, Netflix’s DVD delivery service is approaching its peak, and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has just announced that 12,000 television and film screenwriters will go on strike after negotiations with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) fell through. The 2007-08 writers’ strike ultimately lasted 100 days, ushering in sweeping changes in the media landscape.
Many of those changes took place online. One of the WGA’s major grievances concerned new media royalties. Writers sought steadier income from digital distribution of their work, and they ended up with a bigger piece of that pie once the strike was settled.
The then-new industry of online video presented a problem for traditional media screenwriters, but it also offered a solution. As the strike forced TV programs into extended reruns, showrunners went online...

As we learned from one of Community’s best ever episodes, Ken Burns’ heralded documentary films are also ripe targets for parody. Now, Machinima is taking aim at Burns’ signature filmmaking style with a series called Real Fake History, a mockumentary that pretends pop culture stories are historical events.
Each episode of Real Fake History dives into a different pop culture franchise. Across ten installments, the series will visit everything from Starship Troopers to Game of Thrones to Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. The first episode, however, treads upon the familiar nerd territory of Star Wars by examining the Battle of Endor. Narrator Phil Morris (Seinfeld’s Jackie Chiles) leads the way, The Guild co-star Jeff Lewis provides the most comedic punch, and, as you might expect, the camera slowly pans across every single image it encounters. It’s pretty fun stuff, though the commenters seem more interesting in explaining how,...

Digital star and producer Sandeep Parikh has a new web series out that’s sure to give you some comedic insight on just exactly what policemen do when there’s nothing to do. Parikh and comedian Mel Cowan star as two cops who are just trying to pass the time during their routine, unexciting shift in Code Five.
Created by Parikh and writer Ed Brubaker, Code Five introduces viewers to Triggs (played by Cowan) and Sam (Parikh), who are on what the series’ description calls “the longest stakeout ever.” In the debut episode, Sam asks Triggs to listen to his “bustin’ in” speech to see if it’s threatening enough for a cop. Triggs meticulously picks apart Sam’s inflection during the crucial last bit of the speech, and then the two try to come up with better (but very unimpressive) alternatives.
Parikh has lots of previous experience with comedic web series.

A fun video that we missed yesterday during all the Halloween festivities popped onto our radar today so if you're suffering from the post-holiday blues, why not spend a few minutes with "The Real Housewives of Horror"?
The video comes to us from Nerdist's YouTube Channel, and it follows five of the most murderous women in the country as they enjoy the gory and gruesome lifestyle that only horror can provide.
The cast is comprised of Brea Grant, Harley Morenstein, Briana Lane, Jessika Van, Brooke Seguin, Zack Pearlman, and Laura Ortiz. It's produced by Nerdist and Super Creative; executive produced by Kevin Pereira, Yaniv Fituci, and Ziv Haklili; line produced by Carrie LeGrand; directed by Sandeep Parikh; and written by Brea Grant.
With several calls in the video's comments section for this to become a full-fledged series, we could see more soon. In the meantime, enjoy!

After the success of the show Desperate Housewives, Bravo decided to bring the concept of the show into reality, launching The Real Housewives of Orange County in 2006. Further proving that television viewers just can't get enough of being a fly on the wall of the housewife's home, that show launched a thousand spin-offs, everything from The Real Housewives of New York City to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills filling out Bravo's daily programming schedule. To say the least, housewives have taken over television... and I can't exactly say that's a good thing, for folks like ourselves.
The gang over at Nerdist, however, have found a way to make the trend appealing to us horror folk. Yesterday they launched the pilot episode of their new web series Real Housewives of Horror, a reality show spoof that stars Brea Grant and FEARnet's own Laura Ortiz (star of Holliston). At a Comic Con panel for Geek & Sundry, her YouTube channel which is host to shows such as The Flog and Tabletop, Felicia Day talked about her first and most popular web series, The Guild.
Spinoff Online reports that:

After 5 very popular seasons (it's one of the most viewed web series on the entire internet), it's not surprising that The Guild would get a sixth season, but after speculation from fans, it's good that The Guild Season 6 is finally confirmed. That is, unless Geek & Sundry includes non-existent shows. (Though technically, you could argue that every YouTube channel has an infinite number of non-existent shows, as well as any existing ones. But which non-existent shows are better? It's an unwinnable argument, but hey, this is the internet,...

You’re the online video hosting, distribution, and advertising network of choice for thousands of creators of original web series. You just launched a newly redesigned, curated destination site, intended to highlight and showcase quality online programming in an easily navigable environment for current and would-be consumers of online video content. Because you often sell out of your ad inventory, you’re hoping this new site will attract more viewers, which will create more inventory against which you can sell more ads. You’re certain the new site will naturally accrue more users over time, but you know it doesn’t hurt to accelerate that growth by marketing the property and its premiere content. And if an advertiser that wants to target young creators and consumers of online video programming is on board to craft a branded campaign that shares a few of your marketing initiatives, even better. Such is the case with blip.

From Sandeep Parikh to Felicia Day, The Guild has launched careers for a number of its actors, but it has also created work for the people behind the camera. Sean Becker, the series' Streamy Award-winning director since season two, is one such case. Becker is a rare but increasingly common case of a person who, for basically his entire career, has worked in new media. The Guild, whose fifth season officially premieres on the web on July 26, is probably his most high profile credit, but Becker has lots of plans and projects. "It’s been crazy lately," Becker said in an interview. "I'm keeping busy and couldn't be happier. And I'd rather have that then not be busy at all." Becker has been working on passion projects with a number of Guild actors, including Jeff Lewis (The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour, currently raising funds for season two), J. Teddy Garces...

A wiser man would have not waited to start his laundry at 9 Pm on the night before he had to drive the accursed I-5, but Lord knows I've never been that bright. So at 5 Am, I hopped in my Jetta and cruised down to San Diego. I left at this goddamned hour because usually the two hour journey is fraught with the traffic of the morning commuters plus the onslaught of nerdlingers coming to Comic-Con. Somehow, I managed to make it to San Diego by 7 Am. But my first stop wasn't the hotel or the convention center. It was a mall movie theater, to see an advanced screening of Captain America.
Like kudzu, San Diego Comic-Con has spread voraciously over the face of San Diego. Not just content to remain in the Convention Center, events have now spread to the surrounding hotel ballrooms and meeting rooms. But beyond that, the...

The concept of a show whose episodes debut solely online is the future of television. Sorry, Nielsen. While Hulu gives people a chance to acclimate to this inevitable step in entertainment, others have embraced the idea wholeheartedly. One of the more prolific series to have made a name for itself in the content-saturated world of YouTube is The Guild. They’re now on their fifth season, and now their fourth has landed on DVD. The first three seasons are currently on YouTube, but if you want to enjoy the fourth, for now, the only way to do so (or if you’re one of the show’s many loyal fans) you’ll need to pick up the DVD. To be fair, they’ve managed to make the purchase worthwhile.

Do you wish you slept better? The Better Sleep Council can help. Since 1979, this non-profit, consumer education arm of the International Sleep Products Association (a non-profit supported by America's mattress industry) has devoted itself to educating the public about how to improve upon what everyone spends one third of their lives doing. The Bsc produces Better Sleep Guides and disseminates research linking sufficient sleep to improved physical performance, work productivity, and more, all in the pursuit of teaching you and me how to have pleasant dreams (and helping quality mattress makers sell their products). Do you wish you knew more about The Better Sleep Council? Suite 7 can help with that. The branded entertainment web series from Cjp Digital Media (the same marketing and production house that created The Temp Life and The Webventures of Justin and Alden and helped Easy to Assemble become one of the most-watched branded web shows ever) is an anthology,...

They took the Seinfeld way out. Finish while you’re on top. And that they did. Today the series finale (above) of Atom’s long-running hit comedy The Legend of Neil hits the internet after a special screening in downtown Los Angeles last night. We knew this day was coming, and even counting down to it doesn’t make it any easier. This one goes way back for us at Tubefilter. For me, this is the end of an era in web series. Not that no one will ever center a comedy of 80’s pop references around a video game again—no it will happen—but this kind of all star team doesn’t exactly come around every day. Let’s not drop into full board comps to the gold medal winning 1992 Dream Team, but here’s a web series that has Felicia Day on its roster but equally touted...

It’s the end of a chapter in web series next week as one of the internet’s most popular comedies is closing the book on its run as Atom’s most popular franchise to date. The Legend of Neil bows its series finale next Wednesday (Oct 27), but before then, Atom is making the most if it. Creators Tony Janning and Sandeep Parikh hosted a special edition of AtomTV on Comedy Central last night—the network owns Atom and has been increasing the interplay between the two platforms. Sure, Comedy Central gives its internet stepchild the late night munchies timeslot—2:00 Am Et/Pt—but that’s what DVRs were made for right? And I can’t say I haven’t stumbled upon some late night LoN episodes on accident a few times. We have a sneak peek at The Legend of Neil finale above, along with a glimpse of...

This might be the closest thing to a spin-off of the long running and inarguably popular comedy web series The Guild. Aside from stars Felicia Day and Sandeep Parikh, we haven't seen too much of the rest of the cast popping up in other web series, so this one caught our eye. The Guild director Sean Becker has teamed up with comedian Jeff Lewis (aka Vork on The Guild) for a new web series, The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour. Lewis stars along with a number of guest stars in distinct comedy sketch for each episode, with only Lewis being the common thread. Guest stars in the 10-episode first season: Felicia Day (The Guild) Vince Caso (The Guild) Tara Caso (The Guild) Brett Sheridan (The Guild) Jamie Kaler (My Boys) Kyle Bornheimer (Worst Week) Tom Konkle (Safety Geeks Svi) Kim Evey (Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show) Related News:Felicia Day...

The Legend of Neil, the hilarious webseries about a man stuck inside a real-life Legend of Zelda-like video game, is back for its third -- and sadly, final -- season. (Writer/creator Sandeep Parikh reportedly has a TV deal with Comedy Central and will focus future energies on that project.) There are seven new episodes in all, although word is that they're longer and more "epic" than those in the previous two seasons. So how's the first episode -- the only one released so far (and which debuted last week at Comic-Con)? After a pretty funny "remix" of the opening song, Neil (Tony Janning) is back in the "real" world, and he's got his life back together -- if you call pumping gas "back together." When he realizes that his father (also played byTony Janning, in a funny bald-wig) has been keeping secrets about his dead mother (who also looks to be portrayed by Janning,...

Fans didn’t have to wait long to feast their eyes on the latest music video from hit web series The Guild, which unveiled the to a ballroom full of over 1600 wide-eyed fans at Comic-Con on Saturday. In what has become an annual tradition for the web series after its multi-million view breakout “Do You Wanna Date My Avatar” video from last year’s Con penetrated well beyond the show’s loyal fans, this year’s video upped the ante in terms of production and dance moves. (That, and we are now officially convinced that Felicia Day could also make a sizable living as a singer.) Zaboo convinces Codex to resume game play by transporting them to a world of inspiring song and dance. Vibrant costumes and a large cast of extras give it an over-the-top look and feel. The video is up on Microsoft’s Bing Video alongside the...

There aren’t too many other people who embody the spirit of web entertainment as well as Sandeep Parikh. Parikh is all over the web: as an actor on marquee web series The Guild, writer-director of Atom’s Legend of Neil and creator of his own website, EffinFunny. Already a celebrity to hundreds of thousands of fans, Parikh’s popularity keeps growing each year. Now, with Neil’s final season premiering yesterday on Atom, Parikh is set for the next big stage of his career: writing for television. Comedy Central, Atom’s partner and fellow Viacom subsidiary, announced Parikh has signed a blind script deal with the network. “I’m very excited to be able to throw my hat in the television ring,” Parikh said. “Do not doubt that I will continue to create for the web even as I write this script for television.” But first, Neil. Parikh promises...

Following its world premiere at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, the third and final season of Streamy Awards nominated Legend of Neil launched today at Atom.com. The premiere marks the first blind script deal for series creator Sandeep Parikh with on-air partner Comedy Central. After the gripping cliffhanger that capped off Season 2, Neil returns for an epic Season 3, "where he'll have to examine what kind of hero he is, find out if he has it in him to rescue Princess Zelda, and answer the oldest question in video games: Quit or Continue?" So not sure how many of you know but I follow a web series with Felicia Day called The Guild. Felicia Day was also in Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and has made appearances in Dollhouse, Monk, Lie to me, House and just finished a movie called Red.
Felicia writes and produces the show. Here's a synopsis for those of you that have never seen the show!
The Guild is an American comedy web series created by Felicia Day, who also stars as Codex. It premiered on YouTube on July 21, 2007. Future webisodes premiered on Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace, Zune Marketplace, and MSN Video. The webisodes were later made available on the official Guild website, YouTube, and iTunes. In April 2010, Microsoft renewed the show for a fourth season.
The show revolves around the lives of online guild "The Knights of Good" who play countless hours of an unspecified Mmorpg video game.

Returning for a third glorious season, Felicia Day's uproariously funny, knowing net comedy continues to gleefully poke fun at online gaming culture, serving as a benchmark for webisode series and a veritable how-to-guide for net based short filmmaking. Pointed, well observed, and character-driven, The Guild follows the perennial underachievement of The Knights of Good, a dysfunctional family of users, losers, and the socially stunted who fumble and bicker their way along in a fictional, unspecified massive multi-player online role-playing game.

Luckily, Day was born to recite neurotic, uncomfortable monologues to camera, her mousy cuteness at once both awkward and instantly adorable. Illeana Douglas may be quite the name in web series circles now, especially after landing six Streamy nominations for her popular comedy Easy to Assemble, which just wrapped its second season earlier this year. It even spawned a spinoff series Sparhüsen, which nabbed its own Streamy nod. But aside from those two, the Emmy-nominated TV and film actress has yet to venture into a web series where she isn't the one calling the shots. Looks like that’s about to change. Douglas just wrapped shooting a two-episode guest starring arc on Spherion-sponsored office comedy The Temp Life in New York this week, playing cold hearted CEO Eve Randall. Also shooting a guest spot this week is Taryn Southern who brings back her gumpy midwest It tech Nancy Roder for a few more episodes. The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
