Following his breakthrough role in 2019's The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Jonathan Majors shot to fame with several exciting projects, including joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he was set up to be the next supervillain in the Multiverse Saga. It all came crashing down after his arrest for domestic violence and subsequent firing, but two years later, Majors is back.

Majors underwent a 52-week in-person domestic violence program and was dropped from several projects. However, as he's set to premiere a longtime project next month, the interest and support for the actor returned. Per FlixPatrol, his 2022 box office flop Devotion is a major hit on Max, topping the charts in several countries.

Jonathan Majors may be seeing the first signs of his return to Hollywood creeping in as, along with his delayed movie Magazine Dreams finally being given a release date, his 2022 movie Devotion is currently sitting near the top of the Max streaming chart. The sisters walked the red carpet together at the premiere of their new film Shirley on Tuesday (March 19) at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Regina stars as Shirley Chisholm in the story of the first Black congresswoman and her trailblazing run for president of the United States in 1972.

Also in attendance at the premiere were co-stars Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Michael Cherrie, and W. Earl Brown. Shirley is one of the last films made by the late Lance Reddick.

“Shirley Chisholm is a woman who impacted me and influenced me when I was a child. She gave me the courage and the stamina and the fortitude,” Bass explained to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet outside the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. “But I’m also here because my friend, representative Barbara Lee, is a character in the movie and I want to see young Barbara Lee.”

She was 47 years old; at the time, she had served only one term (starting in 1968) as the first Black woman to be elected to Congress. (Her district centered on the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.) To say that Chisholm wasn’t a seasoned Washington, D.C., player would be putting it mildly. And she looked like an outsider. She wore puffy wigs, schoolmarm glasses, and tasteful print dresses. There was a slightly prim stoicism about her, though she lit up whenever she flashed her smile with the gap tooth on the right side. She looked like who she was — a day-care supervisor from Bed-Stuy, and a devout Christian.

But her persona didn’t end there. This church lady was a fighter, of Guyanese and Bajan descent, and she spoke with a pristine propriety that carried a hint...

Many may not know the name Shirley Chisholm, but it is not for lack of Hollywood trying to keep her flame alive. The seven-term Brooklyn congresswoman, who became the first African American woman elected to Congress when she won in 1968, also became the first woman and first African American to seek the nomination for President of either major party when she ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. She defined the word “trailblazer” and her story is indeed inspiring, if also frustrating for all the obstacles she had to overcome in a male-dominated business of governing. Uzo Aduba won an Emmy for her supporting role as Chisholm the 2020 limited series Mrs. America, even as the series itself was focused on conservative gadfly Phyllis Schaffly played by Cate Blanchett. That series touched on the 1972 campaign and thus Chisholm as well, but now, after 15 years of trying, Regina King has realized a longtime...

John Ridley won an Oscar for his screenplay for 12 Years a Slave, but his projects since have been far less impressive. The new Netflix biopic Shirley, starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, should herald Ridley’s return to the realm of prestige fare. Unfortunately, the film all too often takes the easy way out, making it yet another biopic about an unforgettable person.

Shirley tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, as she embarks on a campaign to receive the Democratic nomination to become President of the United States. Shockingly, despite her importance, there hasn’t been a major biopic about Chisholm yet, but this isn’t the tribute she deserves.

Unlike many biopics, Shirley is mercifully brief at under 2 hours long. However, perhaps ironically, this also causes the film to feel like a truncated, Wikipedia-esque telling of the details of Chisolm’s presidential campaign.

Netflix’s Shirley is in so many ways a companion piece to the streaming platform’s recent Rustin that the two films could be entries in the same anthology series. Both shed light on influential Black political figures too long undervalued in historical accounts of their era. Both are driven by commanding performances from first-rate actors in the title roles. Both focus on specific chapters of the lives they depict, mostly skirting the clichés of cradle-to-grave biopics. But both also struggle to frame their subjects in the forceful dramatic terms they merit, getting stuck in too much expository talk and at times nudging reclamation into hagiography.

There’s a moment late in the film, where after long resisting the notion of campaigning in California as a waste of time and resources in her run for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (Regina King) finally agrees to make a play...

There’s no doubt that John Ridley’s Shirley is trying to make a statement about marginalized peoples’ role in shaping America and their power when it comes to making their presence known to those who would never see them otherwise. But the film also uses one of our greatest and most complex Black leaders to make that statement, and it’s cheaper for it, reducing the arc of Shirley Chisholm’s life to a handful of easy platitudes and inspirational movie clichés. In the end, this sub-Sorkin-esque political potboiler sidelines her most meaningful community work to the fact that she tried and failed to run for president.

The film’s first scenes speed run through roughly a decade of Chisholm’s political life, largely glossing over her time as a teacher and years of activism for equal rights. Much of that time saw her struggling to be heard as a woman of color.

Regina King shines as Shirley Chisholm, leading a powerhouse cast in a captivating exploration of her historic presidential campaign. “Swagger” has been canceled at Apple TV+ after two seasons.

Series creator Reggie Rock Bythewood shared the news with fans via Instagram. “What an amazing adventure,” he wrote. “In our two seasons, we have launched careers, disrupted genre, brought forth humanity through our characters, told stories we care deeply about, revolutionized the way to shoot basketball and had fun.”

Bythewood went on to thank the creative team behind the show as well as producer CBS Studios. “Apple, while you are not ordering a season three, I made the show I wanted to make. Thank you for that,” he continued.

“For our FAMbase, you lifted us in ways we could have never imagined. To the industry, don’t take your foot off the gas. Keep telling our stories,” he concluded.

The series about a high school basketball star (played by Isaiah Hill) and his journey through the world of youth hoops is loosely inspired by the life of NBA star Kevin Durant, who’s an executive producer. The cancellation comes a few months after season two’s final episode streamed in August.

Today at the 2023 Winter Television Critics Association press tour, Apple TV+ announced that “Swagger,” its acclaimed and emotional sports drama from creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood, is set to return for its second season in June of 2023, and unveiled a first look at the eight-episode, next chapter of the series, executive produced by Bythewood, Kevin Durant, Brian Grazer and Rich Kleiman.

Inspired by NBA superstar Kevin Durant’s experiences in youth basketball, “Swagger” explores the world of elite youth basketball clubs, the players, their families and coaches, and “the game within the game.” Off the court, the show reveals what it’s like to grow up in America.

The second season of Swagger will debut on Apple TV+ in June. The streamer announced the news Wednesday, along with a few first look images of the cast.

The images don’t give much away, showing a few moments with star Isaiah Hill’s character Jace Carson. One appears to be on the court after a game with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Ike, a former star player-turned-youth basketball coach. Another image appears to be a more tender interaction between Jace and Quvenzhané Wallis’ Crystal.

Season 2 comes just under two years after the premiere of the first installment, which prompted a bit of a time jump to accommodate the aging of the younger cast, as well usher in a more compelling storyline, creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood said during Apple TV+’s Television Critics Association panel.

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s winter 2023 press tour, Apple TV+ revealed a trailer for comedy series “Shrinking” starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, which premieres on Jan. 27.

The series follows Jimmy (Segel), a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own. Ford plays Jimmy’s boss, who runs the therapy practice. Also starring are Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell.

Segel, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein co-created “Shrinking,” which is produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence is under an overall deal, and Lawrence’s Doozer Productions. Executive producers include Lawrence, Segel, Goldstein, Neil Goldman, director James Ponsoldt, Randall Winston, Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer.

This is a movie that delivers what it promises, no more and no less, and does just enough (or even a little less) in the story department and ferociously and devotedly hangs onto the technical department of recreation and, above all, the action scenes.

From Christina Jackson’s perspective, acting chose her — not the other way around. “I was always very animated, and my parents thought I [might become] a lawyer,” recalls Jackson, 35, of her formative years in Plainfield, New Jersey. The vocation she would make her career as an adult first presented itself when Jackson was in seventh grade. “There wasn’t a lot available — like, I wasn’t taking karate classes, I wasn’t doing ballet,” she says of the moment a teacher in her middle school suggested she join the drama club.

The connection was immediate. “I love reading, I love storytelling — I love turning the page and being transported back in time or to another world,” says Jackson. Discovering a talent for performing led her to an arts-focused high school, where she majored in drama. “It wasn’t a game anymore. This was real work.

“Devotion” adapts the remarkable true story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, Navy pilots following WWII and before The Korean War who had each other’s backs no matter what. Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) was the first African American carrier pilot to serve in the navy. He found his calling from a super young age, realizing it fully when he saw a poster advertising flying for the Navy at Ohio State University. Lieutenant Tom Hudner passed up Harvard to go to the Naval Academy, and he became Jesse’s wingman.

“Devotion,” says composer Chanda Dancy, “is about true eternal love. How do you translate love for family, love for your fellow man, love for your country, into music? That’s what the director and I wanted to create.”

Dancy’s score for the J.D. Dillard film about an African-American pilot who became a Korean War hero is among its biggest assets: a work for massive orchestra that underlines the thrill of flight, the dangers of war, and the close emotional ties forged between fellow airmen along with their families waiting back home.

The makers of the aerial war epic film ‘Devotion’, where pop icon Joe Jonas makes his acting debut, have moved its India release from November 25 to December 2. Based on the bestselling book written by Adam Makos, the film also stars Jonathan Majors and Glenn Powell playing celebrated wingmen in the movie.

‘Devotion’ is a true story from the Korean War about two elite US Navy fighter pilots — Jesse Brown, who was the first black aviator in US Navy history. and his compatriot and dear friend, Tom Hunder. The action takes place during a brutal battle in the Korean War.

Devotion director Jd Dillard knew what was in store when Jonathan Majors was scheduled to perform his Korean War drama’s most powerful scene, but the performance still hit harder than anyone expected.

Devotion chronicles the heroics of the first Black naval aviator, Jesse L. Brown (Majors), during the Korean War, as well as his relationships with his loving wife, Daisy (Christina Jackson), and wingman Tom Hudner (Glen Powell). Prior to each flight, Brown performed a ritual in which he would look in the bathroom mirror and recite all of the horrible remarks that have been said to him over the course of his life.

For Dillard, it was most important that his actor feel safe on the unusually quiet set.
