Image
Following his breakthrough role in 2019's The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Jonathan Majors shot to fame with several exciting projects, including joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he was set up to be the next supervillain in the Multiverse Saga. It all came crashing down after his arrest for domestic violence and subsequent firing, but two years later, Majors is back.

Majors underwent a 52-week in-person domestic violence program and was dropped from several projects. However, as he's set to premiere a longtime project next month, the interest and support for the actor returned. Per FlixPatrol, his 2022 box office flop Devotion is a major hit on Max, topping the charts in several countries.

Jonathan Majors & Glen Powell's 80% Rotten Tomatoes Scored 'Devition' is Streaming on Max
Image
Jonathan Majors may be seeing the first signs of his return to Hollywood creeping in as, along with his delayed movie Magazine Dreams finally being given a release date, his 2022 movie Devotion is currently sitting near the top of the Max streaming chart. The Korean War movie, in which Majors appears alongside Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell, received very little in the way of attention when it debuted in cinemas, but now is finding an audience on streaming despite Majors’ current position as a Hollywood outcast.

Directed by J.D. Dillard and based on Adam Makos’ book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice, the movie chronicles the bond between Jesse Brown (Majors), the first African American U.S. Navy aviator, and his friend and fellow fighter pilot Tom Hudner (Powell). The full synopsis for the movie reads:

Netflix's Shirley Review | Regina King Uplifts Rote Biopic
Image
The 1972 Democratic presidential campaign of Shirley Chisholm is the focus of writer/director John Ridley’s biopic, Shirley. Oscar-winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) delivers a commanding performance in the Netflix drama that shines the spotlight on one of the most dynamic and fiercely ambitious political trailblazers from the late 1960s, ’70s, and beyond. At the time, Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968, was considered an outsider. She entered Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district, without much party support and often stood out with her “churchgoing” attire and outspokenness. The idea of a presidential run may have surprised even her, but once Chisholm took hold of the idea, there was no stopping the woman.

John Ridley keeps the pace steady throughout Shirley but opts for a more straightforward approach to telling this story. Chisholm’s fierce determination and drive are the main throughline here,...

Shirley Movie: What Happened To George Wallace After His Assassination Attempt
Image
George Wallace was paralyzed from the waist down after an assassination attempt in 1972, ending his Presidential campaign. Arthur Bremer, the man who tried to kill Wallace, served 35 years in prison and was released in 2007 on parole. Despite the attempt on his life, Wallace won two primaries, attended the Democratic National Convention in 1972, and ran for President again in 1976.

A pivotal scene in the new Netflix movie Shirley is the real-life assassination attempt of presidential candidate George Wallace. Wallace, played by W. Earl Brown in Shirley, was a well-known American politician and judge who served as the 45th governor of Alabama for a total of four terms. Like the real-life Shirley Chisholm, Wallace announced that he was running for President of the United States as a Democrat in the pivotal 1972 election.

As portrayed in Shirley, both Chisholm and Wallace were victims of separate assassination attacks, although Chisholm's was far less severe...

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass had two obvious reasons to attend Tuesday night’s Netflix premiere of John Ridley’s Shirley starring Regina King as trailblazing politico Shirley Chisolm.

‘Shirley’ Review: In a Docudrama About the 1972 Presidential Campaign, Regina King Plays Shirley Chisholm in All Her Contained Fervor
Image
At a glance, Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 campaign for president was the definition of quixotic. She was 47 years old; at the time, she had served only one term (starting in 1968) as the first Black woman to be elected to Congress. (Her district centered on the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.) To say that Chisholm wasn’t a seasoned Washington, D.C., player would be putting it mildly. And she looked like an outsider. She wore puffy wigs, schoolmarm glasses, and tasteful print dresses. There was a slightly prim stoicism about her, though she lit up whenever she flashed her smile with the gap tooth on the right side. She looked like who she was — a day-care supervisor from Bed-Stuy, and a devout Christian.

But her persona didn’t end there. This church lady was a fighter, of Guyanese and Bajan descent, and she spoke with a pristine propriety that carried a hint...

‘Shirley’ Review: Regina King Shines As Political Trailblazer And First Black Female Elected To Congress And To Run For President
Image
Many may not know the name Shirley Chisholm, but it is not for lack of Hollywood trying to keep her flame alive. The seven-term Brooklyn congresswoman, who became the first African American woman elected to Congress when she won in 1968, also became the first woman and first African American to seek the nomination for President of either major party when she ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. She defined the word “trailblazer” and her story is indeed inspiring, if also frustrating for all the obstacles she had to overcome in a male-dominated business of governing. Uzo Aduba won an Emmy for her supporting role as Chisholm the 2020 limited series Mrs. America, even as the series itself was focused on conservative gadfly Phyllis Schaffly played by Cate Blanchett. That series touched on the 1972 campaign and thus Chisholm as well, but now, after 15 years of trying, Regina King has realized a longtime...

Shirley Review: Regina King Is Excellent in Cookie-Cutter Biopic
Image
John Ridley won an Oscar for his screenplay for 12 Years a Slave, but his projects since have been far less impressive. The new Netflix biopic Shirley, starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, should herald Ridley’s return to the realm of prestige fare. Unfortunately, the film all too often takes the easy way out, making it yet another biopic about an unforgettable person.

Shirley tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, as she embarks on a campaign to receive the Democratic nomination to become President of the United States. Shockingly, despite her importance, there hasn’t been a major biopic about Chisholm yet, but this isn’t the tribute she deserves.

Unlike many biopics, Shirley is mercifully brief at under 2 hours long. However, perhaps ironically, this also causes the film to feel like a truncated, Wikipedia-esque telling of the details of Chisolm’s presidential campaign.

‘Shirley’ Review: Regina King Is Formidable in Solid Political Bio That Only Sometimes Matches Its Subject’s Passion
Image
Netflix’s Shirley is in so many ways a companion piece to the streaming platform’s recent Rustin that the two films could be entries in the same anthology series. Both shed light on influential Black political figures too long undervalued in historical accounts of their era. Both are driven by commanding performances from first-rate actors in the title roles. Both focus on specific chapters of the lives they depict, mostly skirting the clichés of cradle-to-grave biopics. But both also struggle to frame their subjects in the forceful dramatic terms they merit, getting stuck in too much expository talk and at times nudging reclamation into hagiography.

There’s a moment late in the film, where after long resisting the notion of campaigning in California as a waste of time and resources in her run for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (Regina King) finally agrees to make a play...

Shirley Review: John Ridley’s Shirley Chisholm Biopic Sweats Only the Big Stuff
John Ridley
There’s no doubt that John Ridley’s Shirley is trying to make a statement about marginalized peoples’ role in shaping America and their power when it comes to making their presence known to those who would never see them otherwise. But the film also uses one of our greatest and most complex Black leaders to make that statement, and it’s cheaper for it, reducing the arc of Shirley Chisholm’s life to a handful of easy platitudes and inspirational movie clichés. In the end, this sub-Sorkin-esque political potboiler sidelines her most meaningful community work to the fact that she tried and failed to run for president.

The film’s first scenes speed run through roughly a decade of Chisholm’s political life, largely glossing over her time as a teacher and years of activism for equal rights. Much of that time saw her struggling to be heard as a woman of color.

Anette Bening and True Detective: Night Country star Jodie Foster are also up for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for their turns in Nyad.

The latest real life person to get the Netflix biopic treatment is Shirley Chisholm. She was the first ever Black woman to be elected to Congress but Shirley, John Ridley’s film, is more concerned with her 1972 Presidential campaign run.

Take a look at the Shirley trailer below.

Regina King plays Shirley in the film and she is joined by Lucas Hedges, Amirah Vahn, André Holland, Christina Jackson,...

Official Trailer for 'Shirley' - Starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm
Image
"Fearless. Fierce. First." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for their upoming biopic film titled Shirley, from filmmaker John Ridley following his Nola hospital thriller series Five Days at Memorial just before this. The film is now set for streaming in March on Netflix, and based on early test screening reviews, it's not going to make much of an impact (which is why it didn't open in last year's awards season). Shirley tells the story of the first Black congresswoman in America's history and a political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for President of the United States years ago. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign. The film stars Regina King in the lead role as Shirley Chisholm, with Lance Reddick (Rip), Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Cherrie, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, and André Holland. This looks like a by-the-numbers biopic in every way.

‘Swagger’ Creator Explains Season 2’s Time Jump To See Young Cast “Navigate Their Way Through Adulthood”
Image
The second season of Swagger will debut on Apple TV+ in June. The streamer announced the news Wednesday, along with a few first look images of the cast.

The images don’t give much away, showing a few moments with star Isaiah Hill’s character Jace Carson. One appears to be on the court after a game with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Ike, a former star player-turned-youth basketball coach. Another image appears to be a more tender interaction between Jace and Quvenzhané Wallis’ Crystal.

Season 2 comes just under two years after the premiere of the first installment, which prompted a bit of a time jump to accommodate the aging of the younger cast, as well usher in a more compelling storyline, creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood said during Apple TV+’s Television Critics Association panel.

Devotion BTS Clip Sees Jonathan Majors Pay Respects To Jesse Brown
Image
Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from Devotion's digital release. Based on a book by Adam Makos, the Korean War epic follows U.S. Navy fighter pilots Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, the former of which became the Navy's first Black aviator. Directed by J.D. Dillard (whose own father was a Blue Angel) and written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, Devotion tackles the racial tension of the time period and the dangers of their job.

Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell star in Devotion as Brown and Hudner respectively, and they are joined by an ensemble cast that includes pop star Joe Jonas, actress Christina Jackson, and screen veteran Thomas Sadoski. Powell's Lieutenant Judner is a newcomer to Fighter Squadron 32, who meets and befriends Ensign Brown, the lone Black man in their unit. The film chronicles the latter's heroism and untimely demise during the war, with both...

Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
‘Devotion’ (2022): A Top Gun style story of the Fifties.
Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
Devotion is a film directed by J.D. Dillard starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell.

This is a movie that delivers what it promises, no more and no less, and does just enough (or even a little less) in the story department and ferociously and devotedly hangs onto the technical department of recreation and, above all, the action scenes.

Premise

During the Fifties, in the Cold War times, two very different pilots will be forced to fight the enemy and test their friendship in combat.

About the Movie Devotion (2022)

Devotion is one of those movies about heroes in a war with all against each other, all the clichés we can find in this genre applied to a historic recreation that is technically brilliant, but loses power because of its simple screenplay with barely any depth to it and which bases its strength on the excellent scenes of fighter pilot aircraft in combat.

‘Devotion’ Star Christina Jackson on Playing “the Heart” of the War Drama
Image
Click here to read the full article.

From Christina Jackson’s perspective, acting chose her — not the other way around. “I was always very animated, and my parents thought I [might become] a lawyer,” recalls Jackson, 35, of her formative years in Plainfield, New Jersey. The vocation she would make her career as an adult first presented itself when Jackson was in seventh grade. “There wasn’t a lot available — like, I wasn’t taking karate classes, I wasn’t doing ballet,” she says of the moment a teacher in her middle school suggested she join the drama club.

The connection was immediate. “I love reading, I love storytelling — I love turning the page and being transported back in time or to another world,” says Jackson. Discovering a talent for performing led her to an arts-focused high school, where she majored in drama. “It wasn’t a game anymore. This was real work.

Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
How to Watch ‘Devotion’: Is the Aviation Movie Streaming?
Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
“Devotion” adapts the remarkable true story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, Navy pilots following WWII and before The Korean War who had each other’s backs no matter what. Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) was the first African American carrier pilot to serve in the navy. He found his calling from a super young age, realizing it fully when he saw a poster advertising flying for the Navy at Ohio State University. Lieutenant Tom Hudner passed up Harvard to go to the Naval Academy, and he became Jesse’s wingman.

Based on the book by Adam Makos, “Devotion” follows Jesse and Tom’s journey alongside Fighting 32, their assigned Flight Squadron, as tension built following World War II to bleed into The Korean War. Alongside the starring pair, Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas and more appear.

Fans of Jonathan Majors and/or Glen Powell may be wondering how to watch “Devotion,...

Chanda Dancy’s Music for ‘Devotion’ Places Her in Awards Contention
Image
“Devotion,” says composer Chanda Dancy, “is about true eternal love. How do you translate love for family, love for your fellow man, love for your country, into music? That’s what the director and I wanted to create.”

Dancy’s score for the J.D. Dillard film about an African-American pilot who became a Korean War hero is among its biggest assets: a work for massive orchestra that underlines the thrill of flight, the dangers of war, and the close emotional ties forged between fellow airmen along with their families waiting back home.

It took 109 Nashville musicians eight days of recording to complete the score for “Devotion,” and if Academy voters recognize the accomplishment, Dancy could become the first Black woman to be nominated for best original score.

Dillard hired her more than two years ago, even before shooting began. The first theme she wrote (titled “Measure of a Man”) was...

Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Devotion,” a based-on-truth scenario regarding Jesse Brown, a Navy black aviator who broke through barriers during the 1950s Korean War, in theaters on November 23rd.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

This is the story of Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) and Tom Hudner (Glen Powell), a black and white wingman team during the early integrated Navy pilot days during the early Korean War conflict. Jesse Brown was a pioneer as a Top Gun for the Navy in the days when African Americans were given few opportunities to fly planes for the U.S. military. Hudner becomes his colleague and friend, while Brown’s wife Daisy (Christina Jackson) keeps up the home front in a new and not-so-welcoming neighborhood. When the a war mission beckons and duty calls, the two mavericky pilots will watch each other’s backs.

‘Devotion’ Director Jd Dillard on Jonathan Majors’ Show-Stopping Scene: “It Hurts to See Hurt”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

[This story contains “spoilers” for the historical Korean War drama Devotion.]

Devotion director Jd Dillard knew what was in store when Jonathan Majors was scheduled to perform his Korean War drama’s most powerful scene, but the performance still hit harder than anyone expected.

Devotion chronicles the heroics of the first Black naval aviator, Jesse L. Brown (Majors), during the Korean War, as well as his relationships with his loving wife, Daisy (Christina Jackson), and wingman Tom Hudner (Glen Powell). Prior to each flight, Brown performed a ritual in which he would look in the bathroom mirror and recite all of the horrible remarks that have been said to him over the course of his life.

For Dillard, it was most important that his actor feel safe on the unusually quiet set.

“That scene hurt, man, and it’s supposed to hurt,” Dillard tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s one of those scenes where...

Devotion Review
Image
Plot: During the Korean War, Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), one of the first black Naval aviators, and his wingman, Tom Hudner (Glen Powell), become close friends, with a deadly mission eventually proving their unfailing devotion to each other.

Review: In the middle of so many art films here at TIFF, it’s still refreshing to know that a well-crafted, mainstream, big-studio potential blockbuster can still find its way in. Sporting a huge up-and-coming star in Glen Powell, Devotion is exceedingly well-timed, with him having just played another Naval aviator to massive success in Top Gun: Maverick. Pairing him with Jonathan Majors, who’s about to become the big new bad guy in the next batch of Marvel movies, may prove to be a savvy move for Sony, with this likely to appeal to the same audience that liked Maverick so much. This is another unfussy crowdpleaser and, like Maverick, tells...

Devotion Cast & Character Guide
Image
Set during the Korean War, Devotion primarily follows a pair of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, and these main characters are portrayed in the movie's cast by two of Hollywood's most promising rising stars. Based on a true story and adapted from the nonfiction book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos, the movie is set in the early 1950s, when Americans aided South Korea in their conflict with North Korea. Devotion focuses on two real American pilots who served in the Korean War and became great friends and even greater aviators.

While centered on two main characters, played by Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, Devotion also features a noteworthy supporting cast as well. As with any war movie — even those set mostly within the confines of small aircraft — the ensemble is key. Among the supporting players in Devotion is a pop singer less known for acting,...
