Black Heat Review: Parents on a Violent Precipice
Image
“Black Heat” wastes little time on pleasantries, thrusting its audience directly into a maelstrom of parental fear and violent resolve. The premise is stark: Malik and Alexis are on a desperate, high-stakes mission to retrieve their teenage daughter, Tiana. She has fallen under the sway of King David, a criminal figure operating from the labyrinthine confines of a sprawling apartment complex.

From its opening frames, the film establishes an immediate, almost breathless intensity, signaling a narrative that prioritizes forward momentum and the raw urgency of its central characters’ plight. The story kicks off not with the ‘why’ but the ‘how,’ as the parents are already deep into their dangerous endeavor.

The Unconventional Saviors

At the heart of “Black Heat” are Malik (Jason Mitchell) and Alexis (DreamDoll), a couple whose bond is tested and affirmed by their shared, perilous objective. Their transformation into determined rescuers is compelling precisely because they eschew typical action hero archetypes.

‘Black Heat’ Review: Well-Armed Angry Parents Rescue Their Daughter in a Lively Shoot-’Em-Up
Image
There’s something inherently exciting about a thriller that takes place entirely within one apartment building or complex — a setting that is contained while threatening potentially nasty surprises behind every door. Prolific indie writer-director-producer Wes Miller’s Orlando-shot “Black Heat” doesn’t offer much more than that basic concept, yet he keeps this high-body-count action exercise pounding along in lively if blunt fashion.

Starring “Straight Outta Compton’s” Jason Mitchell and Tabatha Robinson (aka rapper DreamDoll) as parents rescuing their daughter from criminals at a sprawling housing project, the film could have used some additional polish in terms of both script and style. Still, it’s got enough propulsive energy to keep viewers entertained. Dark Star Pictures and production company BLacklight are co-releasing to over 200 U.S. theaters on March 28.

In the opening sequence, marital couple Malik (Mitchell) and Alexis (Robinson) are traveling in their SUV, bantering about favorite movies like “Boyz n the Hood,...

Image
Exclusive: Jason Mitchell (Mudbound) has signed on to star in the feature Black Heat, directed by Call Her King filmmaker Wes Miller.

Joining Mitchell in the pic are rappers Tabatha “Dreamdoll” Robinson and Nle Choppa, in his first big-screen appearance. Miller is directing from a script he wrote. Andrew van den Houten and Miller are producing through their Blacklight banner. Production is currently underway in Orlando, Florida.

Billed as a rollercoaster story of “suspense, drama, and unexpected twists,” plot follows the broken lives of two parents portrayed by Mitchell and Robinson. After failing to get help from authorities, the pair go on a suicide mission to rescue their fifteen-year-old daughter, who’s under the control of the enigmatic King David, played by Nle Choppa.

Mitchell is best known for his breakout performance as West Coast legend Eazy-e in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton. He has since been...

As Call Her King opens Judge Jaeda King is having a bad day, she got smacked around at her martial arts class and then her husband tries to join her in the shower which leads to a major argument. That would be the case of Sean Samuels who will be sentenced for multiple homicides. But moments after she passes a sentence of death, Sean’s brother Gabriel also known as Black Caesar and his crew storm the courthouse.

Uncaged Review
When it comes to werewolf movies, so much excitement relies on the transformation. An American Werewolf In London still stands as one of the all-time achievements in practical wolf-itizing, and newer titles, such as Wolf Cop, have had their go at flesh-ripping, hairy mutations. So how does a low, Low budget affair like Daniel Robbins’ Uncaged stand a chance against more well-endowed genre entries? Don’t expect wicked effects work sans an ending that goes for broke (and even then, the wolves look a bit Halloweenish), but Robbins’ scrappy demeanor continually claws and scratches towards a meaty conclusion. Does it succeed? Well, that’s the million-dollar question (a question far too expensive for this film’s meager budget to answer).

This particular roaring nightmare begins when three college goofballs decide to spend their winter vacation in the middle of a wintry nowhere. Jack (Ben Getz), Brandon (Zack Weiner), and Turner...

Uncaged just wrapped production in New York, and it's expected to debut later this year. Check out the first stills from the flick, which stars Gene Jones, who made quite an impression in The Sacrament!

Bloody Disgusting nabbed the first stills. Check one out below, and hit up their site for the other.

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Café (2011)
Cafe Movie Review
Jennifer Love Hewitt in Café (2011)
Title: Cafe Writer-director: Marc Erlbaum Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jamie Kennedy, Daniel Eric Gold, Hubbel Palmer, Richard Short, Garrett Lee Hendricks, Madeline Carroll, Alexa Vega, Michaela McManus, Derek Cecil If one has on their “bucket list” seeing a live-action, achingly precious ensemble drama in which a butterfly recites some of the lyrics to “I Want Candy,” then they should definitely see “Cafe.” Then, and only then. Actually… you know what? They may want to hold up and wait a bit longer, rolling the dice to see if some other enterprising would-be auteur works that left-field tidbit into their armchair-philosophizing cinematic treatise on paying it forward or embracing life or some such malarkey. A sincere...
