Ten years ago, the writing and directing duo of Jen and Sylvia Soska (a.k.a. the Twisted Twins) teamed up with Katharine Isabelle of Ginger Snaps and Freddy vs. Jason to make the body horror film American Mary (pick up a copy Here). To mark the film’s tenth anniversary, the Soskas have created “a variety of American Mary Ten Year Anniversary items for your collection and to celebrate a decade of modification”, which are available for purchase through their Etsy store. But that’s not the only way they’re celebrating. Speaking to a fan on Twitter, the Soskas revealed they are currently developing an American Mary TV series!

Jen and Sylvia Soska should be on the radar of most fans of the horror genre and it’s progression as a genre with something unique and interesting to offer the current earth or cinema. Their previous, and debut, flick was Dead Hooker in a Trunk, which was written and directed by the spooksome twosome, who also appeared in main roles in the flick. It wasn’t anything special as far as I’m concerned but it has a cult following and it did show the capabilities of these two genuinely interesting filmmakers as well as offering a glimpse at what they could do in a shoestring budget and no-name talent.

Dread Central: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat today, ladies- you did a fantastic job on the film and created an incredible character for Katharine [Isabelle]. What was it in your minds that made her perfect to play Mary?

Jen Soska: Well, as a rule, we never ever write for a particular actor; we usually have types in mind, but when we’re trying to create characters, we try and put as much of that out of our minds as we can.

The Soska Sisters' 'American Mary' has just opened in select theatres across the Us including La, New York, Austin, Chicago and San Diego and is still currently showing everywhere else on VOD. I was sent an email saying that writer-director-identical-twin-horror-movie-chicks are interested in me for their movie. I thought it was a cute schtick but I figured they probably sucked and their movie was terrible. I was just going to read the first couple of pages to say I read it then say “no thanks.” I ended up reading...

Following on from Universal plucking the DVD and Blu-ray release of surgically based horror 'American Mary' here in the UK the Us distribution rights have been targeted by XLrator Media. Surprisingly, however, even though the UK home release will arrive in late January our American cousins won't see the latest horror project from the Soska sisters until sometime during the Fall/Autumn of 2013. XLrator will release 'American Mary' through their Screamfest label but the official date is still yet to be confirmed. Jen and Sylvia Soska (aka the Twisted Twins) broke out onto the scene a few years back with their Grindhouse/Exploitation homage, Dead Hooker In A Trunk. With that film, the Canadian duo proved that they could make an entertaining movie on a small budget, and that violence, gore, and sick humor are not only something that the boys can play with. That being said, the Soskas’ follow up feature, American Mary, manages to reinforce that notion, while also showing that the pair are more than just one trick ponies.

I've been covering horror movies for a while now, and over the years I've noticed a lot of very interesting genre films about women -- that are also written and directed by men. That's meant as a compliment. Indie filmmakers like Paul Solet (Grace), Mitchell Lichtenstein (Teeth), and Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) are clearly and admirably fascinated by females who exist in an environment of dark fiction, but let's be frank here: there should be more horror films about women -- that are also written and directed by women. The dark and disturbing, yet oddly accessible American Mary looks like a firm step in the right direction. Written and directed by a pair of twin sisters from Vancouver, American Mary is easily one of the most fascinating female-themed horror stories of the past few years, and it should absolutely serve to open a few more doors for the audacious...

When directing team Jen and Sylvia Soska first emerged from the Canadian tundra (well, metropolitan Vancouver, anyway) bearing a bunch of talent and a bedraggled little low-budget feature called Dead Hooker in a Trunk, they were an unknown entity. My, how times have changed.

Thanks to a relentless touring schedule, a gift for self-promotion and that above-mentioned bunch of talent, the Soskas quickly became indie icons. Their Dead Hooker played fast and loose and rightfully became a grindhouse sensation.

But that was way back in 2010. What have they done for us lately? Many is the filmmaker that crashed and burned following a fast rise. Oh god, what if it was all a fluke?

Well, the Soskas are back with their sophomore feature, American Mary, which had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest last night.

Here at Dread Central we love the Soska sisters, and we're happy to report that their latest flick, American Mary, just landed distro overseas so now the whole world can officially dig on their lunacy!

According to The Daily Dead the film has been acquired by Universal Pictures International Entertainment. The acquisition includes all rights to American Mary in a number of international territories, including the UK and Germany. While a specific release date has not been set, look for American Mary to be available internationally in early 2013.

Now the Twisted Twins new, much buzzed about follow up bloody feature American Mary is on the horizon, their vision is complete and so is the first trailer.
