Texas Chainsaw Massacre bidding war competitors Osgood Perkins and Jt Mollner share updates
JT Mollner
Leatherface is a very popular guy. A few months ago, it was revealed that Legendary Pictures, the company behind the 2022 Texas Chainsaw Massacre film that was released through the Netflix streaming service, had let their rights to make new films in the franchise lapse, so Verve, which currently represents the rights, are looking to “build out a multimedia strategy” for the franchise, with filmmakers, producers, and buyers looking to get involved. It was said that writer/director Jt Mollner (Strange Darling) and producer Roy Lee (It) were among the interested parties, with actor Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) hoping to read the script if the project ended up in Mollner’s hands. Mollner quickly distanced himself from the whole thing, but was apparently still in the running… and he had some serious competition. A couple of months ago, we heard that five to eight studios and/or streamers were seeking the rights,...

‘It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before’: Mark Hamill teases ‘sadistic’ villain in The Long Walk
Mark Hamill has said his role as the Major in The Long Walk is “unlike anything [he’s] ever done before”.The 73-year-old actor stars as the antagonist in the upcoming movie adaptation of Stephen King’s 1979 horror novel of the same name, and Hamill has now reflected on his “sadistic” character.During an interview with Discussing Film, the Star Wars actor said: “Well, he’s amoral. I mean, for you to be able to do what he does … he’s got to be some kind of sociopath.“There’s no sort of backstory for him, but you know he’s a really troubled person. And sadistic and … just all those terrible things.”Hamill added The Long Walk was completely different to his other recent projects, like the Tom Hiddleston-starring fantasy film The Life of Chuck and the upcoming animated flick The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. He continued: “It’s...

Osgood Perkins Talks Leatherface and Updates on His ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Involvement
Image
Last month, it was reported that Longlegs director Osgood Perkins is among the heavy hitters interested in tackling the next installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

During Neon’s The Next Wave of Horror panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, a fan asked if Perkins would cast a neurodivergent actor as Leatherface since many viewers read the character as being on the autism spectrum… if, of course, he’s actually involved in the next installment.

“My producing partners and I, we went down a path with Texas Chainsaw. To be honest with you, I don’t know what’s happening with it, but we were certainly in the conversation for it,” Perkins noted, indicating he’s not (yet) officially attached to the franchise.

“What’s lovely about these people who own the rights — it’s the original writer [Kim Henkel] — is that they really care about Leatherface.”

Osgood Perkins continues,...

It’s a tense, dystopian horror story set in a version of the U.S. where freedom is gone and survival is everything.

Mark Hamill Almost Retired From Acting Before ‘The Long Walk’: ‘I Said to My Agent, “I’m Not Motivated Anymore”’
Image
The first 22 minutes of the Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk” debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, following the debut of the new red-band trailer and a panel featuring the cast, including Mark Hamill, David Jonsson (“Alien: Romulus”), Tut Nyuot and Garrett Wareing (“Manifest”).

The film is adapted from King’s 1979 novel (first written when he was 19!), set in an authoritarian America in which 50 young adult men join a televised contest to walk continuously at a pace of at least three miles per hour — or they’ll be killed. Hamill plays a man only known as the Major, the military commander who oversees the Walk and gives the walkers their literal marching orders. In the panel, Hamill said that when director Francis Lawrence approached him about playing the part, it immediately evoked his teenage years in Japan, where he went to school next to a U.S. military base.

"It Has Teeth:" New Stephen King Survival Thriller Didn't Tone Down The Book's Bleak Nature, Says Writer
Image
The movie adaptation of Stephen King's The Long Walk will reportedly not be toned down for the big screen, staying true to the King of Horror's bleak foray into dystopian fiction. Published in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Long Walk has been in development for decades, and is finally making it to movie theaters on Sept. 11, 2025.

The Long Walk depicts a group of teenage boys who participate in the titular competition and must walk as long as they can, as they will be killed if they fail to keep pace; this goes on until there is only one left standing. Thus, it is certainly a dark and disturbing book, but this has not always remained the case with movies adapted from such source material.

However, while The Long Walk movie is not yet officially rated, it seems to be leaning towards an R rating. At the movie's panel...

Stephen King’s ‘The Long Walk’ Gets Tense New Trailer as the Game Begins
Image
The latest trailer for Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” has the 50 contestants struggling to find meaning for why they compete.

The film follows 50 boys from around the country who are selected (or volunteer) to compete in the annual Long Walk. The rules are simple: keep up a pace of 3 miles per hour and you’re good, slow down enough to get three warnings and you “punch your ticket” — aka, get killed. The killing happens right on the road as the rest of the contestants have to keep walking until there is only one left.

“I keep hoping that part gets easier,” Pete McVries (David Jonsson) says in Friday’s trailer after a kid is taken out. “That’s what I’m afraid of,” Ray Garraty (Cooper Hoffman) responds.

The Walk takes place in a vaguely dystopian version of America. Most things are as normal as expected, but the event...

Lionsgate Screens First 20 Minutes Of ‘The Long Walk’ And Debuts New Trailer At Comic-Con; “We Were Able To Keep The Teeth” Screenwriter Says
Image
It’s time for marching orders. Lionsgate dropped a new trailer for The Long Walk today during the pic’s Hall H San Diego Comic-Con presentation Friday. Author of the novel that inspired the film Stephen King introduced the clip via video message, alluding to the Vietnam War and drawing attention to how this story came out long before The Hunger Games and Squid Game.

“It’s got some hard bark on it,” King added of the adaptation.

Based on King’s 1979 dystopian horror novel of the same name, The Long Walk takes place in a disillusioned America that is entertained by a competition called The Long Walk— a challenge in which 50 teenage boys walk continuously without rest. As the journey continues, each competitor must keep walking faster than three miles per hour nonstop or risk being killed. The last boy remaining will earn a prize of their choosing.

'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' Director Says Stephen King Adaptation Is a Dream Come True
Image
Yesterday we reported that yet another Stephen King book was set to be adapted for the big screen in the near future. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, the 1999 psychological horror novel by the writer of classics like Pet Sematary and The Talisman, will be adapted into a feature film by Jt Mollner, the director behind the gripping thriller Strange Darling. Mollner is also the writer behind one of the year's most anticipated King adaptations, The Long Walk. Even though he has already entered the pantheon of talents to bring King's work to the big screen, Mollner expressed his gratitude at the opportunity to adapt such an underrated novel, which he refers to as his "mom's favorite book."

Amid the celebration, Mollner took to X to express his excitement about the announcement. In the post he thanks Lionsgate, Vertigo Entertainment, and King himself. He even uses High Speech, the language...

26 Years Later, a Forgotten Stephen King Horror Story Is Getting Its First Adaptation at Lionsgate
Image
Lionsgate, like the rest of Hollywood, cannot get enough of Stephen King. With The Long Walk hitting theaters this fall, the studio is now looking to be behind the first adaptation of King's 1999 novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has optioned the rights to the 1999 psychological horror novel and tapped Jt Mollner to write and direct the adaptation. Mollner is best known for his 2024 breakout hit Strange Darling, which wowed critics and audiences, including King himself, who called the thriller "really terrific" and "a clever masterpiece" on X last year. Tom Gordon will actually serve as Mollner's second project based on a King novel, as he scripted Lionsgate's upcoming Long Walk adaptation, which Francis Lawrence directed and is set to hit theaters on Sept. 12.

"Jt is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future," said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman in a statement.

'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' Film Adaptation Set with 'Strange Darling' Director
Image
As fans await the release of Lionsgate's adaption of Stephen King's The Long Walk later this year, it appears as if the studio is in no hurry to say farewell to the acclaimed author. Teaming with producer Roy Lee and director Jt Mollner, they'll next be bringing the underrated 1999 King novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon to life, which marks the first time the book has been adapted for film.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Mollner (who wrote the screenplay for The Long Walk) will sit in the director's chair for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and also pen the script for the feature. Casting has yet to be revealed for the project, which is still in the early stages of development. This will be Lee and Mollner's second project together, following the success of last year's Strange Darling, which is undoubtedly one of the best thrillers...

Stephen King’s ‘The Girl Who Loved Tom Gorden’ Sets Film Adaptation From ‘Strange Darling’ Director
Image
Jt Mollner, the filmmaker behind last year’s cult hit “Strange Darling” and the screenwriter of this year’s Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk,” will adapt King’s 1999 novel “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon” for Lionsgate. Mollner will write and direct the project. Erin Westerman, president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, made the announcement Thursday.

The original book follows a young girl who gets separated from her family in the woods and encounters multiple hardships, including a run-in with a bloodthirsty bear. To cope, she conjures Tom Gordon, who at the time played for the Boston Red Sox (King’s favorite team). In 2004 a pop-up version of the story was released, designed by Kees Moerbeek and illustrated by Alan Dingman.

Mollner is not the first filmmaker to take a crack at the story. It was a passion project of George A. Romero’s, who didn’t get to make...

Lionsgate Teams with ‘Strange Darling’ Director on Adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon’
Image
Lionsgate is sticking with Stephen King. The Long Walk is set to release this fall, and they’re just optioned rights to adapt King’s 1999 novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

The company has enlisted Strange Darling filmmaker and The Long Walk scribe Jt Mollner to write and direct the adaptation, THR reports today.

The novel follows the harrowing survival story of a nine-year-old girl named Trisha as she struggles to stay alive after getting lost in the woods alone. With only her Walkman radio playing baseball games to keep her company, the girl’s love of pitcher Tom Gordon begins to manifest in hallucinations that may save her life.

“Jt is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman. “Throughout his work, he creates characters, and especially young characters, that are so compelling, heartbreaking, and emotional that they pop off the screen.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon: Jt Mollner to write and direct Stephen King adaptation
Image
Stephen King’s psychological horror novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was published in 1999, and it was quickly announced that the film adaptation rights were in the hands of one of my all-time favorite filmmakers: George A. Romero, who had previously worked with King on the Creepshow films, The Dark Half, and other adaptations that didn’t make it into production with Romero at the helm (like Pet Sematary and The Stand). Unfortunately, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon ended up being another unmade Romero / King collaboration… but now, it looks like a film adaptation of the book might finally happen, as Lionsgate has optioned the rights for writer/director Jt Mollner. Mollner recently got a lot of positive attention for his horror movie Strange Darling, and he wrote the screenplay for the upcoming King adaptation The Long Walk.

After 2 Failed Attempts, Stephen King’s 26-Year-Old Psychological Masterpiece Finally Makes It to the Big Screen
Image
Who’s ready for another Stephen Kingadaptation? It doesn’t matter if it isn’t you, because there’s one more on the way. Coming out left and right like Scream 7 casting announcements, the latest project that will take the author’s words from page to screen is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this time around, Jt Mollner, the visionary behind one of the most well-received horror movies of last year, Strange Darling, will both pen and helm the production, which is set to release through Lionsgate. This marks the latest partnership between not just the author and the studio, but also the author, studio, and Mollner, as the latter wrote the screenplay for Francis Lawrence’s theatrical take on King’s The Long Walk, which arrives in cinemas this fall.

Stephen King's 26-Year-Old Psychological Thriller Book Becoming A Movie After 2 Failed Adaptation Attempts
Image
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is finally becoming a movie. Stephen King's 1999 psychological horror novel follows a nine-year-old girl who becomes lost in the woods with only her Walkman radio, and as she listens to baseball games, her love of pitcher Tom Gordon begins to result in vivid hallucinations, visions that may hold the key to her survival.

There have already been two failed attempts at adapting The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon into a movie. The first was when George A. Romero was attached to write and direct a film adaptation, but those plans stalled in October 2005 before his death in 2017. In November 2020, it was announced that Lynne Ramsay had been hired to direct the movie, which also fell through.

Now, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon movie is in the works with Jt Mollner writing and directing for Lionsgate. Mollner previously penned Lionsgate's The Long Walk,...

The horror! ‘Sinners’ and ‘The Substance’ lead Fangoria Chainsaw Awards nominations of year’s scariest offerings
Image
The grossest, goriest, and most gratuitous of the year are set to be feted at the 2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.

The Chainsaw Awards are also among the first opportunities for this year's potential awards frontrunner, Sinners, to flex its muscles. (Metaphorical muscles. Michael B. Jordan's are currently streaming on HBO Max.) Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller is in contention for Best Wide Release — where it will compete with 28 Years Later — and boasts a total of ten nominations in all.

Killer Buzz: The 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre Franchise' Bidding War
Image
Anatomy of a Revival Back in March, Deadline revealed that the intellectual property of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ was officially back on the market. Verve- the agency holding the rights since 2017- has been quietly seeking creatives to lead what it’s calling a “multimedia strategy” for the franchise. Translation: not just films, but games, series, comics, and more. The franchise’s origin is almost as grimy as the film itself. Directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written with Kim Henkel, the original 1974 film was a guerrilla effort made for $140,000 in suffocating Texas heat, starring unknown actors, and produced by Exurbia Films. It was distributed by Bryanston Distributing Company- better known for launching the X-rated ‘Deep Throat’. ‘Chainsaw’ made $31 million at the box office, but its creators famously saw almost none of it. New Line Cinema acquired distribution rights in 1983 and oversaw the franchise’s uneasy expansion: nine films, two games,...

The Lumineers’ Jeremiah Fraites Composing the Score for Stephen King’s ‘The Long Walk’
Image
Jeremiah Fraites, co-founder and songwriter of the Grammy-nominated alternative folk band The Lumineers, has composed the score for The Long Walk, Variety has learned.

Based on Stephen King‘ 1979 novel of the same name, The Long Walk is directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling).

“Francis [Lawrence] and I had a really great initial phone call that helped inform what instrumentation we thought would work,” commented Fraites. “Strings and piano felt right in servicing the expected horror you’d find in Stephen King canon. The real challenge for me was going to be writing music that would properly represent the deep relationships these boys were forming while on this brutal walk.”

“We met years ago when the band the Lumineers did a song for the [The Hunger Games] Catching Fire soundtrack — Jeremiah and I had remained friends after that, and stayed in contact,” added Lawrence. “He’d send me vinyl versions...

The cast is led by Cooper Hoffman as Raymond Garraty and David Jonsson as Peter McVries, alongside Garrett Wareing in the role of Stebbins and Tut Nyuot as Arthur Baker. There's Only One Correct Choice To Reboot The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Image
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise is about to get a new home, and, according to Deadline, there may be up to eight suitors for the rights to Leatherface and the gang. As of right now, we know who five of the finalists are, and they've all got their strengths and weaknesses. Actually, that's not true. Jordan Peele and Monkeypaw are a perfect match for the material — and having lost out to Warner Bros. on "Sinners" last year, you could argue they just flat-out deserve this.

With its provocative title and promise of wanton savagery at a time when horror movies were starting to play extra rough, it took a while for word to get out that Tobe Hooper's 1974 original wasn't a gore-fest, but, rather, an intensely terrifying experience that you didn't so much watch as survive — much like its protagonist, Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns), who cackles from the back...

Chainsaw Showdown: Top Hollywood Creators Battle For Texas Chainsaw Massacre Franchise
Image
The seismic shifts in the post-pandemic movie industry are undeniable, and Hollywood is adjusting its compass. The era of effortlessly smashing the $500 million global box office barrier with every big-budget blockbuster appears to be fading. This challenging new environment is prompting many studios to reconsider their slate, reportedly pulling back on the greenlighting of costly summer tentpole films.

In their place, a clear strategic pivot is emerging: a renewed focus on more affordable horror films. This genre consistently proves its worth, delivering robust returns on a smaller investment. The success of this approach is already evident, with a wave of iconic horror franchises being revitalized. We've recently seen triumphant "requels" and fresh installments breathe new life into series like Final Destination, Scream, and Saw.

And the horror resurgence shows no signs of slowing down as projects like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Friday the 13th, and The Exorcist are all actively in development,...

Michelle Randolph in Talks to Star in Horror Thriller ‘Malibu’ (Exclusive)
1923 Premiere
Michelle Randolph, known for her work in the Taylor Sheridan series 1923 and Landman, is in talks to star in Malibu, a horror thriller that Tod Williams will direct for Screen Gems.

Roy Lee and Steven Schneider are the producing the low-budget thriller via their banner Spooky Pictures.

Plot details are being kept in the basement, but it is described as a thriller skulking around in the subterranean horror subgenre. The plan is to shoot later this year.

The project is a reunion between Williams with Schneider. The former helmed Paranormal Activity 2, which was part of the hit horror franchise on which Schneider acted as a producer and executive producer.

Spooky is the pairing of two big names in the horror genre. Together, Lee and Schneider produced Late Night with the Devil, last year’s supernatural horror thriller that starred David Dastmalchian, as well as Strange Darling, the well-reviewed...

Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan Joins Bidding War for Classic Horror Movie Franchise
Image
Taylor Sheridan is best known for creating a slew of original programming for Paramount. However, that doesn't mean that the Yellowstone creator isn't interested in getting his hands on some iconic IP.

According to Deadline, Sheridan is reportedly interested in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre property. However, he'll have some hefty competition for the rights to the Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel-created horror franchise, which includes film, TV, live events, and games, as around half a dozen studios and/or streamers are also vying for the property. Verve, the company holding the rights to the IP since 2017, is behind the forthcoming bidding war, which will begin Monday, June 9. At this time, Sheridan, who was raised in Texas, would only serve as a producer on a future Texas Chainsaw Massacre project.

Sheridan has become a major player in Hollywood thanks to his neo-Western drama series Yellowstone, which ran for five seasons...

Image

Released in 1974, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre hailed from director Tobe Hooper and introduced Leatherface, a villain that has now become one of the most iconic in the horror genre. A new report from Deadline reveals that a new take on Texas Chainsaw Massacre could be on the way. Bidding will open on Monday for the rights to the franchise, with between five and eight studios/ streamers competing. Verve, the company that has repped the rights to the franchise since 2017, is overseeing the bidding. According to the report,...

Texas Chainsaw Massacre bidding war has Taylor Sheridan, Jordan Peele, Osgood Perkins, & more competing for the rights
Mollner quickly distanced himself from the whole thing, but apparently he is still in the running… and he has some serious competition. Deadline reports that five to eight studios and/or streamers are seeking the rights, with names...

According to a new report by Deadline’s The Dish, Taylor Sheridan is now one of the major names being eyed to take over the reins of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, following the release of the Netflix's 2022 legacy sequel effort, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was savaged by both critics and audiences alike.

As per the report, talks regarding who will win rights to the IP “are beginning Monday as anywhere from five to eight studios and/or streamers are vying for the rights of the Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created property.” While there “are no clear frontrunners,” names said to be contention...

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Bidding War Talks Heat Up; Taylor Sheridan Among New Names In The Mix – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Talks for who’ll wind up with the much-prized Texas Chainsaw Massacre IP are beginning Monday as anywhere from five to eight studios and/or streamers are vying for rights of the Tobe Hooper- and Kim Henkel-created property that encompasses film, TV, live events and games.

We first told you about this beauty contest, administered by Verve, the agency having repped rights to the slasher franchise since 2017. Exurbia Films is the primary production company behind Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel as producers. The property is repped by attorney Marios Rush.

Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka in The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015)
Rumor: Osgood Perkins wants to make a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie for Neon
Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka in The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015)
After making The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel, filmmaker Osgood Perkins joined forces with the production and distribution company Neon to bring his fourth film, Longlegs into the world. That film was a major success, earning $128 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of less than $10 million, making it Neon’s highest-grossing release – and by the time it was released, Perkins and Neon were already working on their next collaboration, the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey. That one wasn’t as successful as Longlegs, but it still did well, and earlier this month, Perkins and his producing partner Chris Ferguson launched their production banner Phobos with backing from Neon, signing a first-look deal with the company. Deadline reported that, “under the first-look deal, Neon will house films that Perkins writes and directs, as well as those he produces for other filmmakers.

Academy Award-winner and Marvel star Brie Larson is set to lead a new creature horror movie produced by J.J. Abrams. Having been before the cameras since she was 8 years of age, Larson would first come to widespread attention off the back of her performance in the 2013 coming-of-age drama Short Term 12.
