The recurring line in director Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey sums it up well: “Everybody dies, and that’s life.”
Perkins’ adaptation of Stephen King’s short story from 1985’s Skeleton Crew, now streaming on Hulu, uses its source material as a loose framework for a Final Destination-like, gory romp filled with a nonstop onslaught of over-the-top, elaborate deaths.
The plot centers around twin brothers who find a mysterious wind-up monkey, triggering a series of outrageous deaths that will tear their family apart. When the Monkey’s arm winds up, get ready; a brutal death occurs whenever the cursed object bangs his toy drum. It’s always at random, too. Per the wind-up toy’s box, it is “like life,“ after all.
And in this movie, death comes fast and furious in morbidly funny fashion. So much so that there are over two dozen gruesome demises packed into The Monkey’s runtime,...

Stephen King fans have had a lot to enjoy this year, with several new movies based on his stories hitting screens. Most of King’s classic films, like The Shining and Carrie, were made before the 2000s. He’s also known for some non-horror favorites like The Green Mile and Stand by Me.
One of the latest King movies, The Life of Chuck, isn’t a horror film. It didn’t do well in theaters, but critics liked it, giving it an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
There’s still more King content coming this year. Francis Lawrence is directing The Long Walk, and Edgar Wright is working on a remake of The Running Man. But one of the King movies that’s already out has just been given a streaming release date.

Stephen King fans had a great time this year, with many new adaptations hitting the screen. Most of the classic Stephen King movies, like The Shining and Carrie, came out before the 2000s, and some of his well-known stories that aren’t horror, like The Green Mile and Stand by Me, also became big hits.
One of the latest King adaptations was The Life of Chuck. Unlike most King stories, it’s not a horror film. It didn’t do well in theaters, but critics liked it a lot, giving it an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This year still has a lot to offer. Upcoming adaptations include The Long Walk, directed by Francis Lawrence, and a remake of The Running Man by Edgar Wright. But one King adaptation that already came out has now been given a streaming release date.

The world certainly isn’t hurting for more adaptations to come from the pages of Stephen King novels. And yet, we’re happy that filmmakers haven’t slowed down when it comes to bringing the celebrated horror writer’s works to both the big and small screen alike. This year alone, Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck captivated audiences with its pure heart and zest for life, while Francis Lawrence’s take on The Long Walk looks to be a promising take on an incredibly dystopian plot. But, earlier this year, Longlegs director, Osgood Perkins, returned to cinemas with his wacky, bloodfilled, and entertaining adaptation of King’s The Monkey, and soon, the movie will drum its way onto Hulu, with a date set for August 7.
An absolutely bloody and bonkers ride through King’s 1980 short story, The Monkey follows one family as they struggle with the ups and downs of life.

Stephen King adaptations have always been a big draw, although most of them received mixed reactions. One of the best ones, The Monkey, is heading to streaming soon.
2025 featured four adaptations based on King's works, with more to come next year. The Monkey kicked off the year with the first one, and it was a big hit in theaters and received positive reviews from critics. Six months after its release in theaters, The Monkey will debut on Hulu on Aug. 7.
Neon released The Monkey in theaters on Feb. 21, 2025. The film had Osgood "Oz" Perkins at the helm, who directed the dark comedy horror based on King's 1980 short story of the same name. The dark comedy starred Theo James in a dual role, as well as Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O'Brien, Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood.

Do you know those shows that no matter how many times you watch them, they never lose their magic? Schitt’s Creek is definitely one of those rare gems, and even after five years since its conclusion, it's still just as hilarious as ever.
Since we're in a day and age where reboots and revivals are increasingly popular, who's to say this beloved comedy series won’t make a triumphant return to delight fans once more? In fact, it looks like the show's co-creator has just hinted that a reunion movie or revival could potentially happen in the future.

It was only seven months ago that Osgood Perkins delivered his most high-profile film yet, the unsettling work that was Longlegs, yet he has already returned to unleash onto audiences a new slice of horror. While his 2024 serial killer work was a terrifying experience, he has changed tactics with The Monkey to instead have a bloody good time (with emphasis on the word ‘bloody’).
The feature opens in an antique shop, where an airplane pilot (Adam Scott) desperately attempts to return a wind-up monkey (don’t call it a toy!) The reason for this soon becomes apparent, as the monkey plays its drums and soon causes a grisly death via a chain reaction. This is just the beginning of a horrifying killing spree, which forever changes the...

Osgood Perkins is becoming something of royalty in the horror category as the offspring of one of the most iconic names in the genre, plus carving out his own path with a directing career. Perkins is well established as a director, but his star rose further recently with the atmospheric serial killer film Longlegs and his latest dark comedy horror film The Monkey, which was based on a Stephen King story. Now, Perkins is being given the keys to the low-to-mid-budget horror kingdom as he signs a new deal with Neon and launches his own banner.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Perkins is now partnered with Neon on a first-look deal and he has launched Phobos — a new film banner that he will be running with his partner Chris Ferguson. Per THR, “Under the deal, Neon will serve as the home for Perkins’ projects, which he and Ferguson will produce.

Let’s be honest—when we think of Hollywood celebrities, the first things that usually pop into our heads are red carpets, flashy clothes, luxury lifestyles, and glamorous lives. We rarely imagine them doing normal stuff like grocery shopping, binge-watching shows in pajamas, or getting excited over baby giggles. But guess what? Some of your favorite stars are now answering to cute little nicknames like “Grandpa,” “Granny,” and even “Pop Pop.”
Yes, that’s right. Some of your favorite celebs, who seem too cool (or too youthful) to be called “Grandma” or “Grandpa,” are fully living that grandparent life. And they’re absolutely loving it. Let’s take a peek into the softer side of these stars — the cuddles, the cookies, the baby giggles — and meet the grandkids who’ve turned these icons into giddy, doting Nanas and Opas.

If there’s one thing that’s as prolific as horror author Stephen King himself, it’s the world of Stephen King adaptations. It was recently announced, for starters, that the author’s killer dog classic Cujo is headed back to the screen with a new adaptation in the works from Netflix with Black Swan filmmaker Darren Aronofsky in talks to direct.
Mike Flanagan also has plans to tackle new adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon, and A24 is developing Stephen King’s Fairy Tale into a 10-episode series, to name just a handful of new movies and series on the way in 2026 and beyond.

Tomorrow can’t come any faster for fans of the paranormal Canadian show SurrealEstate, as it finally returns with its third season over a year after being renewed. Last week in the season premiere of Top Chef, "Across Canada, We Go!," the chefs teamed up for a Quickfire Challenge in which they based their dishes around specific sets of ingredients chosen from the Top Chef pantry and by each of the judges. The team of César Murillo, Mimi Weissenborn, and Katianna Hong won that battle with their apple and fennel soup with clams, corn, and chorizo relish. But Mimi had much less luck in the Elimination Challenge, which pitted the teammates against each other as they prepared meals inspired by the five different regions of Canada. Vincenzo "Vinny" Loseto prevailed with a perfectly cooked confit salmon, but Mimi was unable to manage her time effectively. She overcooked her potatoes and dried out her pork. So she was eliminated and sent to Last Chance Kitchen in the hopes of earning a spot back in the main competition.

Not only is Stephen King one of the most venerated working authors, but adaptations of his work have become among the most iconic horror films. Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, which adapts King's 1977 novel of the same name, is continually cited as one of the most formative and impactful horror films of all time. The same is true of movies like Carrie.King's non-horror novels have notable and respected adaptations, including Stand by Me and The Green Mile.
In addition to their critical acclaim, many King adaptations have become box office darlings. The 2017 adaptation of It made over $701 million worldwide, and its successor, It: Chapter Two, made a still-impressive $467.5 million. Other box office hits include The Green Mile, which made $290.7 million and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. As the list of notable King movies continues, 2025 has added another impressive title, which has just crossed an important box office milestone.

In a final marketing stunt to promote The Monkey, Neon sent a school bus full of dead cheerleaders around Hollywood. See how it went in the video below.
In theaters now, the film is based on the Stephen King short story of the same name from his 1985 collection Skeleton Crew.
Produced by James Wan, the gory horror-comedy is written and directed by Osgood Perkins (Longlegs).
When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. 25 years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.
Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy star.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Monkey.
For decades, horror fans have associated Stephen King with monsters. Whether a sinister clown lurking in sewers, a rabid dog patrolling the yard, or a toddler somehow brought back from the dead, King’s creatures practically leap off the page becoming cultural figures unto themselves.
But loyal Constant Readers know that an equally villainous entity lurks within the author’s second short story collection. Third in King’s 1985 tome Skeleton Crew, “The Monkey” follows a wicked windup toy who kills with a clash of his shiny cymbals. In parallel timelines, Hal Shelburn is stalked by this surprising villain who causes death and destruction wherever it goes.
This deep cut demon has not reached the ubiquity of Pennywise, Randall Flagg or Annie Wilkes, but it may be the author’s most overt and bizarre exploration of death. Forty-five years after its initial publication in Gallery magazine,...

Warning: This article discusses major spoilers (and lots of gory imagery) from "The Monkey."
The horror genre is off to a fast and bloody start in 2025, thanks in no small part to the wall-to-wall gore fest that is director Osgood Perkins' "The Monkey." The latest Stephen King adaptation is quite the swerve from what fans may have expected from the filmmaker behind last year's acclaimed "Longlegs," a moody and rather bleak foray into the occult. This time around, moviegoers have been bludgeoned with a tone that combines horror and comedy in equal measure — and nowhere does that feel more apparent than in the many, many grisly kills sprinkled throughout the film. Longtime King readers ought to be well familiar with the source material about a killer windup toy monkey mowing through hapless victims.
The absurdly over-the-top nature of those deaths will almost certainly end up lingering most in the minds of moviegoers,...

As we told you yesterday, we’ve been hearing that Neon is bringing a special post-credits treat to theaters for The Monkey this weekend, a surprise that director Osgood Perkins has now himself commented on with a video shared to Neon’s social media accounts this afternoon.
Bloody Disgusting has been able to confirm that the post-credits surprise attached to The Monkey is indeed a first look at Keeper, Osgood Perkins and Neon’s next horror movie!
The first-look footage carries an ominous tone and bad vibes to the max, and Keeper – due out in theaters on October 3, 2025 – is being billed as “a dark trip from Osgood Perkins.”
You’ll be able to see the footage for yourself Only in theaters after The Monkey.

Sarah Levy takes on the role of Aunt Ida with a gusto that has to be seen to be believed. She and Grae discuss what object she kept with her for safety and good luck, and Grae counters with her object from childhood that she tried to hide in the basement because it was too scary. They discuss what effects, if any, were practical, and what she thinks the genius of Osgood Perkins truly is, as both a director and a movie husband.
The Monkey is the latest film from Osgood Perkins and is an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name. Twins Hal and Bill grow up alongside a sinister monkey that you absolutely must not call a toy. Death surrounds them, even when they become estranged and try to move on with their lives.

If you’re seeing Neon and director Osgood Perkins‘ The Monkey in theaters this week, you may want to stay seated until the lights come up.
Bloody Disgusting has received word that there’s something special after the credits, which we suspect is connected to Perkins’ next movie with Neon, Keeper.
Due out on October 3, the mysterious film is being billed as “a dark trip” from the director of Longlegs and The Monkey, one that’s armed with a very serious tone.
Written by Nick Lepard (Dangerous Animals), the upcoming Keeper stars Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Rossif Sutherland (Possessor).
Neon also has another horror movie, Together starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, releasing on August 1. Maybe we’ll see something from that too…
Based on the Stephen King short story, The Monkey hits over 3,200 screens nationwide tomorrow.
Maslany stars in the gory horror-comedy alongside Theo James, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery,...

One recurring line in writer/director Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey cuts right to the heart of the film’s plot and tone: “Everybody dies, and that’s life.” Like Longlegs, Perkins centers his latest around the suffocating, inescapable inevitability of death, only this time, the filmmaker mines that for absurdist laughs instead of chilling dread.
The adaptation of Stephen King’s short story uses its source material as a loose framework for a Final Destination-style, gory comedy romp filled with a nonstop onslaught of over-the-top, Rube Goldberg-like elaborate deaths. All of it is a comical, carnage-fueled reminder of the film’s core thesis: Death comes for us all, and it’s quite silly to presume you can stop it.
The first sign that Perkins’ The Monkey won’t be an exact retelling of Stephen King’s story comes from a whimsically gnarly opening sequence that introduces a blood-drenched pilot...
