“Cobra Kai” might be officially wrapped up but there are plenty of other shows that can scratch that lingering itch.
When the “Karate Kid” sequel series was at it’s best it was a bingeable mix of ’80s nostalgia, sports drama, and high school melodrama that balanced comedy with more serious moments. Luckily there are a number of other great – and equally bingeable – shows out there.
Below are seven options for shows like “Cobra Kai” to try if you’re trying to capture the same vibes that made it such a great watch.

Much like “Cobra Kai,” Netflix’s “Glow” mined a nostalgic ’80s energy to incredible affect. The series followed a group of women rising to stardom during the real boom of female wrestling leagues of the Reagan-era. Filmmaker Cooper Raiff is a low-key indie darling, thanks to his charming leading and directing films like the SXSW Film Festival award winner "S#!thouse" and "Cha Cha Real Smooth," the latter of which won the Audience Award at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. If you haven't seen either of those movies, they're both worth your time, if only because both films feature Raiff as such a likable, lost twenty-something stuck in arrested development.
At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Raiff is staying in similar, familiar territory as one-half of the titular duo in "Hal & Harper," but he enters a new arena by writing and directing this project as an eight-episode TV series that he spent six years writing before getting it financed and shooting the 300-page project in just 50 days. The labor of love comes with all the hearty laughs and heartstring-pulling emotions that made Raiff previous cinematic entries such wonderful experiences.

Since the end of Game of Thrones, creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss have focused much of their energy on 3 Body Problem, an ambitious, challenging sci-fi series on Netflix. But while we wait for the second season of that show, they're serving as executive producers on a couple others. That includes Death By Lightning, based on the 2011 novel Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Miller.
Death by Lightning (a much shorter but still punchy title) is about the 20th president of the United States, James Garfield. He was inaugurated as president in 1881, a time when the country was still healing from the wounds of the Civil War. He was considered effective, but was assassinated just nine months into his term.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers for American Primeval ahead!
Netflix took a bold decision with American Primeval, a Western high-stakes drama miniseries. It’s set in the Utah Territory of the 1857 era and tries to paint a picture of people’s lives during the expansion of the American West.
A still from American Primeval | Netflix
The story follows Sarah Holloway, who ventures on a journey and meets Isaac Reed across the way. It begins as an engaging survival story but soon goes into a downward spiral, leaving everyone utterly confused and disappointed.
American Primeval’s poorly executed plot twist Betty Gilpin as Sarah Rowell in American Primeval | Netflix
Netflix’s American Primeval should be credited for initially drawing viewers into its unforgiving and grim world. The tension reaches its peak when enemies begin to relentlessly pursue Sara and Isaac across the frontier. But a significant twist in the final episode left a bitter taste in viewers’ mouths.

Cooper Raiff’s latest work, “Hal & Harper,” delves into the intricate emotional world of two siblings. The story tracks Hal (Raiff) and Harper (Lili Reinhart), whose lives remain deeply impacted by their mother’s death. Raiff, serving as writer, director, and lead actor, examines their complex relationship with nuanced storytelling.
The eight-episode series probes the siblings’ interconnected experiences after their mother’s passing. Their father (Mark Ruffalo) retreats into emotional isolation, leaving Hal and Harper to wrestle with their shared grief during early adulthood. Each scene explores how personal loss can profoundly shape individual paths and familial connections.
The narrative moves between moments of lightness and profound sadness, revealing the complicated spectrum of human emotions. By presenting raw, unfiltered interactions, the series creates a deeply personal portrait of two individuals struggling to understand themselves through their collective pain.

Sometimes, the first interaction between two characters tells you everything you need to know about their dynamic. When Hal (Cooper Raiff) clambers in through his sister Harper’s (Lili Reinhart) bedroom window at 3 a.m. so that they can go to McDonald’s, it’s clear that this isn’t your average sibling relationship. They have almost no boundaries, they talk constantly, and are more or less the center of each other’s lives. It’s endearing and obviously unhealthy, and Hal & Harper—which Raiff also created, wrote, and directed—spends eight funny, fraught episodes exploring how they ended up this way, and where they go from here.
The story picks up as Hal is fumbling his way through a college course that he doesn’t really care about while Harper is stuck in a soulless office job and a long-term relationship that she’s no longer fully invested in but...

“I don’t know if you caught this, but we avoided black,” “American Primeval” assistant costume designer Mila Hermanovski told IndieWire. “For the most part, black was reserved only for the Mormons.”
That feels right for a show that finds the deepest gray in every situation. In keeping with the latest wave of Western projects, the eight-part Netflix series (directed by Peter Berg) is precise in the ways in which it eviscerates any lingering notions John Wayne or Laura Ingalls Wilder might have left of the wild wild West. Set during the 1857 Utah War, “American Primeval” spins off in several directions but always returns to Betty Gilpin’s Sara, on the run with her little boy and at the mercy of their reluctant guide Isaac (Taylor Kitsch). He’s not as dangerous as Sara fears (at least not towards her); she’s far more capable of violence than he expects.

Making a promising arrival was Redwood, the new musical starring Idina Menzel, the crowd-pleasing original star of Wicked and Rent. Directed by Tina Landau, the musical played two previews, selling out and grossing $397,117 at the Nederlander. Opening night is February 13.
In its official opening week, the Pulitzer Prize-winning English took in $264,480 for three previews and five regular performances, filling about 81% at the Todd Haimes. Last week’s good reviews could prompt an upturn in business.

American Primeval is one of the most popular Netflix shows of 2025 so far! After fans tuned in for the first season of the series, everyone is looking for another Western series to watch. If that describes you and your search, we have you covered!
The new series from writer Mark L. Smith and director Peter Berg follows a mother and her son, Sara and Devin, played by Betty Gilpin and Preston Mota, on a journey West in 1857. After getting caught up in an attack, Sara and Devin find themselves in the middle of a conflict between the US Army, Brigham Young and the Mormon people, and the Indigenous people. With the help of Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch), Sara tries to stay a step ahead of those who wish her harm.

‘Hal and Harper’ Review: A Stellar Lili Reinhart Steadies Cooper Raiff’s Tender, Turbulent TV Series
During one of many flashback scenes scattered intermittently throughout “Hal & Harper,” a 9-year-old Harper (played by 28-year-old Lili Reinhart) sits in the bedroom she shares with her 7-year-old brother Hal (played by 27-year-old Cooper Raiff). Hal, already a hyperactive people-pleaser before he could spell either one of those words, fills the brief silence before falling asleep with questions. “Did you finish that book you were reading? Did you like it?” “‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’?” Harper says. “No, not yet. It’s about this family where everyone’s super lonely but then it gets even worse because they withdraw and they just become selfish and so miserable.” Then, looking at her wide-eyed, impressionable little brother, she adds, “But maybe it gets better.”
The parallels between Harper’s book report and what her own family is going through are unmistakable, even for a first-grader like Hal. Their father (Mark Ruffalo...

Cooper Raiff has made a name for himself in just a few short years with his indie dramedies Shithouse and Cha Cha Real Smooth, achieving acclaim from critics and audiences alike. His latest project, Hal & Harper, an independent television project produced in full — a rarity these days — sees Raiff make his biggest swing yet without losing sight of the core humanity that makes his work so special.
Hal & Harper Review
Hal & Harper tells the story of two codependent siblings who grow up with their single father, through the years from their childhood into their adulthood. We see their upbringing and how their relationships with one another and their father affect their individual relationships as adults, resulting in an exploration of how the messiness of our childhood can translate into messiness in adulthood.
With each project, Raiff has gotten more confident behind the camera — and presumably better funded.

Cooper Raiff’s film “Cha Cha Real Smooth” sold to Apple for $15 million in 2022, but his wasn’t the first, nor the last to notch such a deal at a festival. That’s not to say it was easy, but with Raiff’s new project, he doesn’t even have that track record to fall back on.
Raiff’s latest project is “Hal & Harper,” an 8-part dramedy series being presented in Sundance’s Episodic section. The series stars Lili Reinhart, Mark Ruffalo, Betty Gilpin, and Raiff, and is one of the higher profile series to ever play in Park City. The rub is, there’s very little precedent for an Episodic project to find a distributor on the sales market at Sundance. People aren’t coming to Sundance with a pot of money set aside to buy shows the way they are with movies. And for all the idiosyncratic series out there,...

Hollywood is heading up the mountain for what’s possibly one of the final Sundance Film Festivals to be held in the posh ski-resort town of Park City. It’s a place that’s hosted its fair share of all-night bidding wars, where films ranging from “Reservoir Dogs” and “Napoleon Dynamite” to “Brooklyn” and “The Big Sick” landed massive deals before going on to box office, and in some cases, Oscar glory. But it’s also been the setting of some frenzied sales that didn’t always pay off, like “Happy, Texas”or “Blinded by the Light.”
Sundance has already announced the festival is considering decamping Utah for Ohio or Colorado in 2027. Even if it does stay in the state, the focus of the festival will shift to Salt Lake City, which is better positioned than Park City to host the crowds that the celebration of movies attracts. Unexpected buyer Magnolia Pictures turned the June Squibb film into a hit, opening the doors for other buyers to take their own risks this year.

American Primeval is the most popular Netflix show of 2025 so far! It's still early, but fans want to know if American Primeval season 2 is happening and what's next for the series from writer Mark L. Smith and director Peter Berg.
American Primeval starring Betty Gilpin and Taylor Kitsch premiered on Netflix on Jan. 9 and has been a huge hit for Netflix since then. The series follows Sara (Gilpin) on her journey West in 1857 with her young son, Devin (Preston Mota). After Sara and Devin are caught up in the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Isaac Reed (Kitsch) tries to lead them to safety, but dangers lurk in these lands. The series was inspired by real events.
While the American Primeval ending doesn't necessarily set up a clear second season, there's definitely some story left to be explored in American Primeval season 2. It doesn't sound like Berg and Smith are interested in taking the story in that direction.

In the world of television, whether that's network TV or streaming, there's constantly renewals and cancellations. It can be hard when we have to say goodbye to a show we love, but that's just the reality of it sometimes. However, what really hurts is when you get the news that a series has been renewed, and then that decision is reversed.
Over the last few years, that's happened to a quite a number of shows for various reasons. For some, it was the pandemic in 2020. Others, the 2023 writers and actors strikes took a toll. And then there are certain productions that are cancelled and the decision to bring them back was reversed, with no explanation given. As mentioned, there's a good number of series' that have experienced this. But here's four that we're disappointed by the most.

Movies and TV shows can’t just have a great story, they need to captivate audiences with a blend of compelling characters, world-building, and emotional depth. In today’s competitive entertainment industry, even the most engaging stories can fall short without a balance of fresh perspectives and on-point aesthetics.

The brutal new Western, American Primeval, stars Betty Gilpin, in a role that is drastically different from her most famous character in Glow. Gilpin has been acting since 2008, but her career break came through playing the polarizing Dr. Carrie Roman in Nurse Jackie. Gilpin's career rose throughout the 2010s, with appearances in Elementary and Masters of Sex, before playing the soap star Debbie Eagan (a.k.a. Liberty Belle) in Glow. American Primeval is one of the best Westerns on Netflix, but as many of Gilpin's previous roles have been in dramas, this treads new ground for her.
Westerns like Yellowstone tend to be more like soaps, casting the reality of the American Wild West in a softer light. That said, American Primeval verges on horror at times and is not afraid to show gore. Though the series appears to start with the story of a woman and her son...

Kevin Costner seems to have lost his footing in the Old West. With his Yellowstone exit and the disastrous outcome of the first part of his passion project Horizon, Costner has fallen far as an actor and filmmaker. A couple of years earlier, he was the revered cowboy character John Dutton, whom everyone seemed to love.

Since its Netflix debut on January 9, American Primeval has been making headlines as one of the most brutal, gritty must-watch Western sagas ever to grace our television screens.
Taking place in 1857 Utah, the series follows fugitive mother Sara Roswell (Betty Gilpin) and her son Devin (Preston Mota) as they navigate the lawless terrain with their guide, Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch). It depicts the bloody, violent collision of early American settlers with indigenous tribes, cultists, religion, bounty hunters, the U.S. government, and ruthless ole Mother Nature herself.
In the wake of its success, questions abound as to whether the story is based on actual events. The answer, my dear friends, is yes, American Primeval is based on the true and deadly story of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. It also portrays real-life people. Director Peter Berg said he found inspiration for American Primeval in 2020 after reading a story about the Utah War.

American Primeval is Netflix's response to the latest rise in Western projects in Hollywood, and while it's a hit among audiences, the critics are a little bit more hesitant to buy into its story. The TV miniseries, created and written by Mark L. Smith, is partially inspired by a true story. American Primeval primarily revolves around the Mountain Meadows Massacre during the Utah War in 1857. It focuses on the fight between Native Americans, settlers, and Mormons over the Utah Territory and how all the groups turned to violence to gain control of the land in the Old West.
Given American Primeval's story, the Western genre's comeback, and the show's stellar cast (which includes Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin), it's not surprising it has been sitting at the top of Netflix's charts. American Primeval creator and director Peter Berg gives a surprising update on the chances of a spinoff. American Primeval has quickly established itself as a hit since it premiered in early January. The ultra-violent Western consists of six episodes, with The Revenant's Mark L. Smith writing the script. It takes place in 1857 during the Utah War, focusing on the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Isaac (Friday Night Lights actor Taylor Kitsch) and Sara (Glow's Betty Gilpin) are at the center of the story, as their journeys anchor the surrounding chaos.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Berg responded to the idea that Isaac would be a solid choice as the focus of a prequel. Berg, who is known for directing films such as Patriots Day and Friday Night Lights, reveals that there are talks underway about an American Primeval spinoff and that it would be an approach they would...

American Primeval episode 6, the series finale, begins shortly after the events of episode 5. Virgil (Jai Courtney) and the bounty hunters finally caught up with Sara (Betty Gilpin). Virgil ties her up on a horse and heads for Fort Bridger, trying to put as much distance between themselves and Isaac (Taylor Kitsch) as possible.
Elsewhere, Abish (Saura Lightfoot-Leon) has convinced Red Feather (Derek Hinkey) and the Shoshone that the Mormons led by Wild Bill (Alex Breaux) and James Wolsey (Joe Tippett) will not stop looking for her until she is killed. At this point, she is the only remaining survivor from the attack that they know about. She's the one who could pin the attack on Brigham Young's forces, so they need to eliminate her. After they wiped out the US Army forces, they'll be heading to the Shoshone next.

American Primeval has improved drastically on Rotten Tomatoes following a disappointing early score. Created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg, the hit Netflix Western chronicles the lives of a handful of characters in the American West and the often violent ways in which they collide in a lawless frontier. American Primeval reviews haven't all been glowing from critics and the show, which stars Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, and Saura Lightfoot Leon, debuted to a lackluster 43% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes earlier this month from seven reviews.
Now, with more reviews having been added, American Primeval is sitting at a much more respectable 62% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes from 39 reviews. This new score means the show is no longer designated "Rotten" as it was initially, but this could still evolve as more reviews are added. The Netflix series now also has an audience score, and that's...

Right at the top of 2025, Taylor Kitsch landed his latest television series hit with the release of American Primeval on Netflix. The series dropped on Jan. 9 and has remained in the daily top 10 most popular ranking since its release. But if you're a fan of the actor, then you know this isn't his first rodeo on the small screen.
In fact, his breakthrough role was in a television series you might have heard of called Friday Night Lights. Ring any bells? Of course it does! He played the troubled bad boy football player Tim Riggins that stole everyone's hearts. But between American Primeval and Friday Night Lights, Kitsch has starred in plenty more shows.
After watching his new hit Netflix limited series, are you looking to add more Taylor Kitsch to your watch list? We're sharing six of the series he has starred in and suggesting whether to watch or skip each title.

Members of the Mormon community shared their thoughts on the new historical drama American Primeval.
Centered around the Utah War of 1857, the hit new Netflix mini-series transports viewers back in time to an oft-forgotten moment in American History when the Mormon church feuded with not only local indigenous groups by the U.S. government itself.
The series boasts an A-list cast including Friday Night Lights actor Taylor Kitsch and Glow's Betty Gilpin, all (for the most part) portraying real people from that time.

American Primeval episode 4 ends with the Mormons learning the US Army is about to attack thanks to a traitor in the US Army's ranks. We know Wild Bill and Brigham Young will not let that happen, and it sets up a major showdown between the Mormons and the US Army in American Primeval episode 5.
In addition, Devin (Preston Mota) just broke his leg after getting it stomped on by a horse. Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), Sara (Betty Gilpin), and Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier) take shelter in a convenient cabin while Devin heals.
Overall, American Primeval episode 5 is the shortest episode of the season. You'll notice this recap is notably shorter, as well, compared to the other American Primeval recaps. While there are some major events, the penultimate episode moves the many pieces around for clashes in the finale.

Netflix's new Western series has become a global success. Producing original movies and TV shows since the early 2010s, the streaming service's catalog of Western content now offers a diverse range of stories exploring the rugged charm of the American frontier. Longmire was A&e's highest-rated original drama before Netflix picked it up in 2014, starting with season four, and releasing the sixth and final season in 2017. Around that same time, the Western miniseries Godless was also released on Netflix to rave reviews.
The Coen brothers' Western anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, was released on Netflix in 2018, presenting six separate tales that blend humor and tragedy and showcase the unpredictability of frontier life. The Harder They Fall, released on Netflix in 2021, is one of the few Westerns with a predominantly Black cast, showcasing a diverse narrative and fresh perspective within the genre.
