Sony reportedly plans to market Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing as a ‘Safdie-like’ crime thriller ahead of its launch later this year.

Darren Aronofsky is one of those filmmakers whose films are a treat to anticipate, just because going in, you never quite know what to prepare yourself for. Could it be a blistering exercise in arthouse surrealism as with mother!, or something more straightforward and sentimental as we saw more recently with 2022’s The Whale?

We do know that his next film is called Caught Stealing and that it will feature lead performances from Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz. Aronofsky, the director of The Wrestler and Black Swan, is renowned for eking career-high performances out of his stars, including Brendan Fraser’s lead turn in The Whale, which saw the actor win an Oscar for his leading turn.

Sony Pictures on Wednesday said that it is pushing back the release date of its latest Insidious movie a year to August 2026, and in its place dating the Darren Aronofsky-directed Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler.

The Sony/Blumhouse Insidious pic, to be released by Screen Gems, is the sixth entry in the horror franchise and comes in the wake of 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which marked franchise star Patrick Wilson’s feature directorial debut and grossed $198 million worldwide. The new installment will now be released August 21, 2026 after having been set to hit theaters on August 29 of this year

Instead, that 2025 date is now being taken by Caught Stealing, which was adapted by Charlie Huston from his book series and centers on Hank Thompson (Butler), a burned-out former baseball player who’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s New York City.

Sony has given the Aug. 29 release date originally set for “Insidious 6” to Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller “Caught Stealing,” starring Austin Butler. The next “Insidious” entry has been pushed nearly a year, to Aug. 21, 2026.

Based on the book series by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the film, the official logline for “Caught Stealing” reads, “Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson (Butler) unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.” Other cast members include Bad Bunny, Action Bronson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Zoë Kravitz, Liev Schreiber, Griffin Dunne, Matt Smith and Regina King.

The Aronofsky-Butler collaboration was first unveiled in March 2024. Upon the film’s announcement, the Oscar-nominated director told Variety that he was “excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life.
