Levin, who is married to a musician, is the mother of two: a son (b. 2003) and a daughter (b. 2006).

She is the author of four published books: "How the Universe Got Its Spots: Diary of a Finite Time in a Finite Space" (nonfiction) and "A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines" (a novel). The latter won the PEN/Bingham Fellowship for Writers. Her most recent books are "Black Hole Blues" and "Black Hole Survival Guide.".

Levin, a theoretical cosmologist, is professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College, Columbia University. She has a BA in physics and astronomy from Barnard (with a concentration in philosophy), and a PhD in theoretical physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
