On August 23rd, Lionsgate released a new version of The Crow onto the big screen (you can read our 6/10 review of the film at This Link and see how we thinks it compares to other Crow movies Here) – and since it turned out to be both a critical failure and a box office bomb, we knew it wasn’t going to end up having much of a theatrical run. Now Lionsgate has announced that The Crow is already set to receive a PVOD (Premium Video on Demand) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through release this Friday, September 13th. A press release notes that the movie will be available “to buy for $24.99 and to rent for $19.99 (for a 48-hour period) on participating digital platforms from which movies are purchased, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and more.”

A remake of The Crow has been talked about for at least a decade and a half, and it finally flew into theaters this weekend. However, it earned only $4.6 million in North America, debuting at #8...on a budget of at least $50 million.

Deadline has taken a closer look at where it all went wrong for the film, revealing that moviegoers who went to Thursday previews may have contributed to that dismal opening weekend thanks to negative word of mouth. That's evident from the remake's 1* rating on Comscore/Screen Engine's PostTrak (and a B- CinemaScore).

Lionsgate limited the damage by acquiring the North American theatrical rights to The Crow for only $10 million with an additional $15 million on marketing. The studio will lose money but not as much as on Borderlands (that loss should reach around $30 million when all is said and done).

Forget about critics plucking the feathers from The Crow at 19%, those moviegoers who attended Thursday night, predominantly fans, slammed the movie on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak with one star, a 47% grade and a 36% definite recommend.

Lionsgate limited its skin in the game with a $10M North American acquisition and $15M P&a on this Rupert Sanders-directed take, starring burgeoning It and John Wick: Chapter 4 genre star Bill Skarsgård. At the end of the day, the studio stands to lose more — in the neighborhood of $30M — on its $110M-plus feature take of gonzo sci-fi video game Borderlands.

While the summer movie season has been generally strong for the last couple of months, this past weekend was a bumpy ride so far as new releases were concerned. MGM's "Blink Twice," the feature directorial debut of Zoe Kravitz, did well enough for itself with a $7.3 million domestic start. Unfortunately for Lionsgate, the long-gestating "The Crow" remake didn't fare nearly as well, to put it mildly. The new adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel of the same name had nothing shy of a disastrous start to its box office run.

Director Rupert Sanders' "The Crow" took in an estimated $4.6 million on its opening weekend, placing at number eight on the domestic charts. That was just barely above "Despicable Me 4" ($4.4 million), a movie that has been in theaters for going on two months. It also failed to gross more than the "Coraline" 15th anniversary re-release ($5 million), which is on its second weekend.

Paramount Pictures is crawling back for more.

The studio is deep in development on a sequel to Crawl, its gator-gnashing horror movie released in 2019, and is eyeing a fall shoot in Europe.

Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, known for penning horror flick Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and time-travel romp Project Almanac, are writing the script.

French-born horror fiend Alexandre Aja, who directed the initial movie, will be back in the director’s chair. Aja is also producing as well as Craig Flores and horror master Sam Raimi, all of whom produced the original.

Crawl, written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, starred Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and father duo who find themselves trapped in a Florida home and hunted by a gator (or three) during a Category 5 hurricane. The Convent

Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

One could say that the reboot of The Crow (1994) was simply cursed. Going through ups and downs ever since its announcement, no one knew if the film would even come to fruition. However, after years and years of setbacks, the reboot will finally be released this year, albeit without Jason Momoa. Actor Jason Momoa was all set to play the lead in the reboot, which he stated was his dream role.

The protagonist of the comic book-based The Crow saga, Eric Draven is one of the most iconic fictional antiheroes of all time. Created by James O’Barr back in 1989, he was initially played by the late Brandon Lee in the 1994 film of the same name, which became a massive cult classic.

Over the years, it spawned three more installments in the film series till 2005. But then the franchise was once again announced to be resurrected in 2008, and Jason Momoa became the final contender to play the lead in the remake by 2016.

However, Momoa’s tenure as the antihero was cut short due to an unexpected exit from the movie, and the role of Draven was passed on to Bill Skarsgård, who recently got the trailer released for his film and will soon be seen in the upcoming reboot.

“The Crow” is based on the indie comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr that was originally published back in 1989 by Caliber Press. 30 years ago in 1994, a film adaptation of the comic book by visionary director Alex Proyas was released into theaters, perhaps better known as the movie where star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set during the middle of production.

Miramax stepped in and spent $8 million to pick up where production left off and finish the film. “The Crow” went on to gross $93.7 million at the box office against its $23 million budget, and the film eventually became a cult classic. Three lackluster sequels and a television adaptation would follow, however the property had always been earmarked for what current distributor Lionsgate is calling a reimagining.

In director Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, evil lies not in the efforts of Satan and his demons but solely within the hearts of the men running a convent in the Italian countryside and, to a lesser degree, the women who answer directly to them. In the opening scene, we witness a terrified young nun (Simona Tabasco) desperately trying to escape the convent, only to be hunted down and restrained by a creepy quartet of red-masked nuns. From this point on, it’s abundantly clear that something is off at Our Lady of Sorrows, even if it takes a young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who’s freshly arrived at the convent, quite a while to figure out that serious trouble is brewing in this little corner of paradise.

Lionsgate has officially released the trailer of the long-awaited adaptation of the 1994 supernatural action film The Crow. The Crow began life as a comic book, with James O’Barr debuting the character in 1989. It grew to new levels of popularity with the cult hit film, which starred the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an on-set accident during filming. Multiple sequels followed, including The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005).

But the current reboot took nearly 20 years to get off the ground, with multiple stars and filmmakers coming and going. Blade Stephen Norrington took a stab at one point, while F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and star Luke Evans tried to break the curse at another point.

It may be downright difficult to believe, but "The Crow" remake has finally happened. Yes, happened, not happening, as had been promised for so long. Lionsgate has now dropped the first trailer for the long-awaited new adaptation of the comic book by James O'Barr. After all these years, we are, at long last, going to see what Eric Draven looks like in a modern context a full 30 years after the first film arrived in 1994. Check it out for yourself above.

The Nun and The Hallow director Corin Hardy has set up his latest feature, high school horror movie Whistle. According to Deadline, Whistle has also lined up quite the cast.

The high school horror movie centered around an Aztec Death Whistle, known for its shrieking sound, will star Dafne Keen, Sophie Nélisse (“Yellowjackets”), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon), Percy Hynes White (“Wednesday”) and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead).

In Whistle, “a misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object, an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down. As the body count rises, the friends investigate the origins of the deadly artifact in a desperate effort to stop the horrifying chain of events that they have set in motion.”

The film was written by Owen Egerton, adapted from his own short story.

Dafne Keen of Logan and His Dark Materials and Sophie Nélisse of Yellowjackets and The Book Thief have signed on to star in Whistle, the latest horror film from The Hallow and The Nun director Corin Hardy. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'll take "The Nun" over "The Nun II" any day. Corin Hardy's 2018 Conjuring Universe spinoff starring Valak as the franchise's popular demon of the cloth was the first entry that felt like it wasn't trying to imitate James Wan's style. Notes of gothic vibes and Hammer horror imbued a sense of individuality into "The Nun," which eventually became one of the Conjuring Universe's most financially successful films despite poor reception from critics and audiences alike. There are dozens of us who appreciate "The Nun" and will champion its misunderstood glory, one "Scariest Scene Ever" article at a time.

Let the fall movie season commence! Kids are back in school, leaves are turning brown, Spirit Halloween stores are in full swing, and it is time to get audiences ready for the spookiest time of the year. While Hollywood had been trying to replicate the success of Marvel Studio’s shared universe concept, James Wan has lowkey created his own shared universe within the horror community with the Conjuring series and spin-offs. The newest entry in the world of hauntings premieres this weekend as The Nun 2 makes its debut in theaters.

Deadline is reporting that the demon in the habit has opened with $3.1 million in advanced preview Thursday screenings in 3,200 theaters. Although the mid-budget movies tend to become modest enough hits, this entry is not expected to best the first movie’s record-breaking total of $53.8 million. The Nun 2 is still estimated to jump-start its run with just over $30 million.

Also new this weekend is ’The Nun II’ and Chinese thriller ’No More Bets’.

Universal Pictures’ My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is aiming to entice audiences this weekend as the widest new release in the UK and Ireland, opening at 587 sites.

The third in the franchise picks up just after the family patriarch Gus has passed away (actor Michael Constantine died in real life in 2021).

Cast including Nia Vardalos – who also directs the third instalment, and wrote the first two, and Sex And The City and And Just Like That… star John Corbett return.

It says a lot about the history of nunsploitation cinema that “The Nun II,” which opens with a scary ghost nun levitating a priest and setting him spectacularly on fire, is one of the more understated entries in the genre.

That’s not to say “The Nun II” is a subtle film, or a thoughtful film, or even a good film. It’s just that when you share space on the video store shelf with Ken Russell’s “The Devils” and Bruno Mattei’s “The Other Hell,” a bunch of cheesy random jump scares wrapped around a tepid storyline just doesn’t stand out much.

Even compared to Corin Hardy’s first “The Nun” movie — itself the fifth entry in the “Conjuring” franchise, with “The Nun II” now the ninth — Michael Chaves’s sequel is a major step down. Hardy’s stylish horror adventure was energetic enough to entertain despite its egregious silliness.

Michael Chaves’ The Nun II is regrettably a dull by-the-books Conjurverse entry. Corin Hardy proved incoming directors could shoot a Conjurverse movie without trying to imitate James Wan — 2018’s The Nun is a breath of fresh Euro-Hammer air. The Nun II falls right back into formation with Chaves’ other franchise entries (The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), where the filmmaker plays imitation games instead of finding his unique directorial voice. It’s a sequel that copies previous Conjurverse entries, lacks discipline, and overstays a nearly two-hour welcome like the rough draft of something tighter, trimmed, and better focused.

Now on its ninth feature entry in just a decade, the “Conjuring” franchise has proved something of a powerhouse in the continued growth of horror as one of the most reliably popular (not to mention cost-effective) mainstream film genres. Their mythologies may be garbled and silly, the scares mostly “jump” ones, yet these movies provide a kind of creepy comfort food — familiarly formulaic jolts unlikely to trouble any non-child viewer’s sleep later on — whose satisfactions are amplified by the good actors and superior atmospherics deployed.

Defying the law of diminishing returns, 2018’s spinoff “The Nun” was (and so far remains) the franchise’s biggest hit to date. Ergo enter “The Nun II,” a direct sequel. In some respects an improvement on its predecessor, in others not, this is finally one more good-enough if unmemorable entry sure to extend the series’ life in lucrative fashion.
