The Women in Comedy Festival wants to lure L.A. performers to Boston for next year’s showcase. Its application window opened Monday and while it doesn’t pay performers selected through its online submission process, it does provide a unique networking opportunity, according to Maria Ciampa, a festival producer. “It’s rough to travel when you’re not getting paid, but for the comedians who have done it they say it’s worth it. It’s launched a lot of careers,” Ciampa, who is based in L.A., told Backstage. “We have shows at the best clubs in Boston. They have the best audiences—audiences there to laugh at you.” The festival, which launched in 2009, isn’t restricted to women—although it does typically have fewer men in its line up. “Do you have to wear a skirt? No!” said Ciampa. “The name is misleading, we chose it for Google purposes.
