Film Bazaar: Malaysia’s Rajendran Brothers Rage Against Oppression, Deforestation in ‘The Depth of Darkness’ Project

Malaysia’s Rajendran brothers, producer Kumanavannan and director Gogularaajan, are angry and have a divinity-tinged story to tell.

Tamil and Malay-language project “Depth of Darkness” (“Kaali”) comes to India’s Film Bazaar co-production market from Busan, where in October, it won the development award at incubator program Malaysian Development Lab for Fiction Feature Films (mylab), an initiative supported by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), the Singapore Film Commission (Sfc), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (Fdcp) and Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca).

“Depth of Darkness” is set in the 1960s, in a secluded Malaysian oil palm plantation which borders a thick forest. Kaali, an innocent, young wife and plantation worker of the Tamil diaspora community yearns to be a mother but is unable to conceive. Busan selects 26 titles for Asian Project Market 2021

South Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has confirmed a 26-title line-up for the 2021 Asian Project Market (Apm).

Projects at the Apm include Siren Vanishes, directed by Harumoto Yojiro, whose feature A Balance won the New Currents Award at Biff last year before going on to the Berlinale this year.

The 26 projects from 15 different countries also includes titles from House Of Hummingbird director Kim Bora, The Mirror Never Lies director Kamila Andini, and Twilight’s Kiss (Suk Suk) director Ray Yeung.

Hong Kong-based sales agent Good Move Media has picked up international rights to Malaysian heist drama Fly By Night (working title), starring Sunny Pang, Jack Tan and Fabian Loo.

The debut feature of Zahir Omar, who previously directed two short films that screened at Rotterdam, the film brings together several talents from Malaysia’s rising independent film scene.

Produced by Perin Petrus and Leonard Tee, a long-time collaborator of Tsai Ming Liang, it was co-scripted by Dain Said (Interchange), Ivan Yeo and Frederick Bailey.

Low Keong, who regularly worked with the late Yasmin Ahmad, is also on board as cinematographer. Among the cast, Sunny Pang is known for his role in the Mo Brothers’ action thriller Headshot, while Jack Tan recently starred in award-winning arthouse drama Shuttle Life.
