The evening’s big winners included “Adolescence,” which completed a sweep of the limited series categories with wins for Breakthrough Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series (for Stephen Graham), while Owen Cooper shared the Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series award with Jenny Slate (who was nominated for “Dying for Sex”). Ten Takes on the Making of Netflix’s Epic Series ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’
Image
Netflix’s ambitious series adaptation of Nobel Laureate Gabríel Gárcia Marquez’s seminal novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ would take years of research, drawing extensively from museums, historical documents and historians.

The production was a massive collaborative effort, employing nearly 900 crew members, primarily Colombian, alongside 150 skilled artisans and thousands of extras. More than 850 local suppliers contributed to the ambitious task of constructing the legendary town of Macondo from the ground up, turning a cornerstone of Colombian literature into a tangible, culturally rich reality.

Most of the set pieces were handcrafted by artisans from across Colombia, preserving centuries-old ancestral traditions. Items such as baskets, iraca palm hats, hand-crocheted bags, musical instruments, hammocks, textiles, mats, and nets were created by Indigenous communities, including the Wayuu, Chimila and Kamsá.

The creative team underwent in-depth lessons on Colombian history, delving into events like the Thousand Days’ War, a devastating civil conflict central to Season One.

Previously, very little had been revealed from the remake. The only shot that's been released of Toxie was from behind the character, keeping his appearance mostly a mystery. Per Entertainment Weekly, that has changed with brand-new images released of the new Toxie. Check out the new photos below.

In the film, Dinklage plays Winston Gooze, a chemical factory janitor who becomes transformed into a monstrous mutant after a freak industrial accident. Daredevil: Born Again Returns To Its Netflix Roots With A Jaw-Dropping One-Take Action Scene
Image
Spoilers for "Daredevil: Born Again" follow.

The premiere of "Daredevil: Born Again" wastes no time at all, kicking off with an action scene that's out to remind you of the original "Daredevil" series.

Here's the set-up: Bullseye has attacked Josie's Bar and critically wounded Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson). Matt/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) arrives and attacks Bullseye, fighting him into the bar. Daredevil has strength and rage on his side, so Bullseye is left running. The one-take begins in the interior of Josie's, then follows Bullseye as he makes it up the building's stairwell, Daredevil close behind, before the fight concludes on the roof.

These extended one-take action scenes were a hallmark of the Netflix "Daredevil," which did a new one in each season while trying to one-up the previous scene. The first was in the second ever "Daredevil" episode, "Cut Man" (directed by Phil Abraham). Taking place in an apartment building hallway,...

'We Were All Very Proud': Dafne Keen Comments on The Acolyte Getting Canceled After 1 Season
Image
The Acolyte was not long for this world, as the Star Wars series was canceled at Disney+ after a single season. While that was obviously not the best news for the show's cast and crew, Dafne Keen still sees the positive side of her involvement with the short-lived series.

In The Acolyte, Keen played Jecki Lon, a Jedi Padawan who meets an unfortunate end before the end of the season. Per Screen Rant, Keen commented on the show getting canceled while at the Saturn Awards. While she admitted that it was difficult news for the team to hear, she is nevertheless happy to have been a part of the show's brief run. Pplaying Jecki still gave Keen a chance to play a Jedi on-screen, which was a bucket list item she's now able to tick off while still rather early into her acting career.

The Acolyte Star Dafne Keen On Show's "Overwhelming" Cancellation: "We Were Proud Of What We Created"
Image
Last August, we got word that Lucasfilm/Disney had decided not to movie forward with a second season of The Acolyte despite several major storylines and character arcs being left unresolved by the end of the season 1 finale - including the introduction of Darth Plagueis.

The decision was met with a mixture of indifference and disappointment, but it seemed very clear that a lot of Star Wars fans - and some of the actors involved with the show - were surprised by this development.

Showrunner Leslye Headland was hoping to be able to continue her High Republic era-set tale, and rumor has it that the studio was planning a second season up until fairly recently.

Despite speculation that the negative backlash from many Star Wars fans contributed to the show being canned, reports emerged that The Acolyte was cancelled because it didn't get enough viewers, plain and simple.

However, a...

Netflix Hit ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’: Colombia’s Locations From Caribbean Sun to Rose-Tinged Salt Flats, Marshy Mountain Moors, a Mangrove Swamp and That Key Big Tree
Image
Early on in their accaimed TV series adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” Netflix and Bogota-based producer Dynamo (“Narcos”) set out to find Macondo.

First, writers, producers and location managers visited Aracateca, the Nobel Prize winner’s birthplace on Colombia’s Caribbean seaboard. Later they toured Colombia’s Guajira peninsula, its Pacific Coast and Ciénega Grande swamp, capital Bogota’s province and Tolima in the high Andes.

As they had always imagined, they never found Macondo – in the sense of one single village which could easily readapted into the icon magical realism. The idea, however, from the very beginning was to build Macondo from scratch.

Those fam trips, however, left multiple health hostages to fortune.

Most of the action of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” – the novel and series – in reality takes place in a relatively small strip of territory in Colombia’s far Caribbean north.

The Acolyte And Squid Game Star Lee Jung-jae Rumored To Be In Talks For MCU Role
Image
Following stand-out turns in Netflix's Squid Game and Disney+'s The Acolyte, South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae might be set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to scooper Mttsh, Jung-jae is in talks for an undisclosed MCU role.

We don't have any details on who he might be in line to play, but there's a chance it isn't any one specific hero or villain. Kevin Feige has been known to reach out to actors he's keen to work with without having a particular character in mind, and it's also possible that Jung-jae was given a choice of several different roles.

This isn't actually the first time the actor has been rumored for a Marvel part, as there was some talk of him being in negotiations to play Mr. Negative in Sony's Ssu last year.

The Acolyte proved to be one of Lucasfilm's more divisive Star Wars shows,...

Gabriel García Márquez
A Half-Hearted Endeavor: The Struggle to Portray the Kaleidoscope of Realism in Netflix’s ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’
Gabriel García Márquez
Why was it argued that Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 literary masterwork “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is un-filmable and anti-cinematic, while the novel is one of the most picturesque pieces of literature ever written? One can hardly finish this 422-page novel without bypassing the images it evokes. I assume, the reason behind this ‘un-filmability’ or ‘un-adaptability’ lies in the kaleidoscope of realism that stems from Gabriel García Márquez’s life and works.

Once, while delivering a lecture on García Márquez at the Harry Ransom Center, Salman Rushdie remarked that, while reading García Márquez’s works, his readers’ often, enchanted by the ‘Magic,’ overlook the ‘Real.’ This magic of Gabo, which at times overshadowed the real, is perhaps one of the key reasons for making it look like cinema or television is inefficient in adapting his texts. But, García Márquez, who throughout his life was inextricably involved with cinema, himself did...

One Hundred Years Of Solitude Season 2's Story Explained: What Happens After Season 1's Ending
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for One Hundred Years of Solitude season 1 and the original Gabriel García Márquez novel it is based on.One Hundred Years of Solitude's season 1 ends on an ambiguous note, paving the way for a full-fledged season 2 that would adapt the remaining chapters of Gabriel García Márquez's novel. Directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora, Netflix's One Hundred Years of Solitude seems to achieve the impossible by adapting a book considered inadaptable for decades. While book adaptations can often leave viewers dissatisfied with their creative liberties and source material deviations, Netflix's take on Gabriel García Márquez's novel has been received well by both viewers and critics.

The show boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% after its season 1 premiere. Owing to this, it is not surprising that Netflix ordered 16 episodes of the show, and its second installment is already underway. Like One Hundred Years of Solitude...

“Everything has to feel very homemade”: Netflix’s Success With Unadaptable ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Took Literal Flesh and Blood to Achieve
Image
For a novel that has been claimed difficult to adapt in a live-action setting, Netflix proved that time solves everything – at least with how they handled Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. Many Hollywood filmmakers have attempted to translate the 1967 Nobel Prize-winning story to the screen, but it was only today that an adaptation has been successfully made.

Part of the reason the author had firmly refused to make a movie or show out of his work was because he believed the beautiful and enchanting town of Macondo could never be rendered onscreen. Finally, Netflix made it possible.

Netflix brings a realistic approach to One Hundred Years of Solitude

The setting for Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude stood in a field outside the city of Ibagué where they built a tangible production from the ground up. In plain speaking,...

International Disruptors: Director Alex García López Talks Pressure Of Bringing ‘One Hundred Years Of Solitude’ Adaptation To Screen & The Importance Of Showing Latin American Stories In A Different Light
Image
Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week we’re talking to Alex García López, a director on Netflix’s epic adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s seminal novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. The first eight episodes land today (December 11) on the streamer and the Argentine director lifts the lid on the pressures that come with steering Netflix’s most ambitious Latin American project to date, why the project had to be set in Colombia and his next steps, which includes a move into the feature film space.

Alex Garcia Lopez is no stranger to directing big-budget and ambitious TV series, with shows such as fantasy drama The Witcher, neo-noir anime series Cowboy Bebop and Star Wars series The Acolyte among his list of credits. But when...

Netflix’s ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Is a Faithful and Eloquent Adaptation of the Beloved Novel: TV Review
Image
Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 magnum opus, “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” has long been considered one of the greatest works of modern literature. However, during Márquez’s life, he refused to sell the rights to the novel because he felt a film adaptation would not come close to scratching the surface of this century-long tale. Now, with the blessing of his sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, who serve as executive producers, Netflix has adapted the sweeping masterwork into a two-part limited series spanning over 16 hours of television. (Netflix hasn’t yet announced when Part 2 will premiere.) With directors Alex García López and Laura Mora at the helm for Part 1, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is exquisitely detailed and layered in intricate symbolism. The show is one of the most faithful page-to-screen adaptations in recent years.

A tale of family, fate, power and the frailties of humanity,...

One Hundred Years of Solitude Review: The Magic of Adaptation
Image
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Márquez is a monumental work in the literary realm. Its pages are alive with the magic of memory, the weight of history, and the delicate dance of fate—a tapestry woven with threads of love, loss, and a real longing.

As I settled in to watch Netflix’s adaptation, I felt a familiar flutter of anxiety: how do you transform the ineffable beauty of Márquez’s words into a visual medium? The novel’s popularity is almost heavenly, revered not only for its narrative complexity but also for its significant impact on the landscape of magical realism. It’s a towering achievement that makes many adaptations feel like pale shadows of the original—a formidable challenge that this series must carefully navigate.

Márquez famously opposed film adaptations of his writings, claiming that no film could capture the depth of his vision. And yet,...

‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Review: Netflix Brings Gabriel García Márquez’s Epic to Life as a Sweeping Series
Image
Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude” — an elliptical epic of fate, family, politics and madness in Macondo, a fictional town that represents the wider, tragic history of Colombia and Latin America as a whole — has been made into a Netflix series.

That’s Netflix; the streaming service better known for “Squid Game,” “Tiger King” and the more overpriced works of Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes.

Bad idea, right? Well, to further quote that other prizeworthy wordsmith Olivia Rodrigo, “f—k it, it’s fine.”

More than fine, actually. The first season of this two-part, Spanish-language production can come across at times like a highbrow telenovela. But the sweeping pageant does an impressive job of streamlining García Márquez’s idiosyncratic, discursive novel into an expeditious but still thoughtful, contemplative and, yes, realistically magical eight hours.

The author’s sadness and humor come across intact; the...

‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Review: Netflix’s Gorgeous, Ambitious Adaptation Captures Some of the Novel’s Magic
Image
Three years ago, Max released a limited series adaptation of a well-regarded novel that blended magic realism and an all-too-real snapshot of a global pandemic. Dreamy and uncomfortably familiar, bleak and yet bursting with hope, Patrick Somerville’s translation of Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven has settled into a reputation as a modern classic — THR placed it at No. 42 on our list of the 50 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century So Far — but owing to the timing of its premiere, the show was initially a little lost. It missed deadlines for many critics’ Top 10 lists and didn’t attract the awards attention you might expect based on its subsequent acclaim. It had to take a long path to adoration.

We’ll have to see if a similar fate awaits Netflix’s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, a novel with one of...

Image
Jodie Turner-Smith reveals that she has "no regrets" about playing Mother Aniseya in the divisive Star Wars Disney+ series The Acolyte. The series has received harsh backlash from fans and critics despite topping the streaming charts. Even before its release, it was shrouded in hostile reception. Disney has decided not to renew The Acolyte for season 2.

Turner-Smith reflects on her experience starring in the Star Wars series while promoting The Agency in an interview with Collider. The star revealed that she "loved being in that universe" and she wouldn't hesitate to return if The Acolyte received another season. Turner-Smith further explained it had nothing to do with the content of the show, but because it was her "dream project." Check out what the actor said below:

Of course [I'd return]! First of all, I loved being in that universe, I had an incredible time doing that, and I loved it. No matter what,...

The Acolyte Star Lee Jung-jae Reflects On Cancellation And Negative Backlash: "My Feelings Were Hurt"
Image
Back in August, we got word that Lucasfilm/Disney would not be moving forward with a second season of The Acolyte.

The decision was met with a mixture of indifference and disappointment, but it's very clear that a lot of Star Wars fans - and some of the actors involved with the show - were surprised by this development.

Despite some rumors to the contrary, reliable reports suggested that The Acolyte was cancelled because it didn't get enough viewers, plain and simple. However, it's difficult to disregard the possibility that the level of negativity surrounding the show did influence the studio's decision to at least some extent.

While speaking to Vanity Fair about season 2 of Squid Game, star Lee Jung-jae (Master Sol) reflected on the backlash the show received from certain fans, with some cast members being subjected to racist, homophobic and misogynistic abuse online.

“My feelings were hurt,” he admitted.

'My Feelings Were Hurt': The Acolyte Actor Reflects on Online Outrage Over Diverse Cast
Image
Star Wars: The Acolyte was a hit with critics, but the show was nevertheless subjected to heavy backlash on social media. In particular, there had been many negative comments made online about the diversity of the cast, and actor Lee Jung-jae can remember how hurtful it felt at the time.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair to promote the upcoming second season of Netflix's Squid Game, Lee reflected on the backlash against The Acolyte. While he found the racist comments to be hurtful, he especially felt for series showrunner Leslye Headland. Lee also said that while he knew going into the show that Star Wars has a passionate (and sometimes very vocal) fan base, he was still "shocked" by the levels of racist comments and online harassment that he'd witnessed.
