It isn’t hard to see why motherhood has been a favorite topic for 21st century horror filmmakers. As humans become more acutely aware of the involuntary forces and events that have shaped their own demons, filmmakers have gleefully embraced the challenge of showing us that our own damaged psyches are often scarier than anything the outside world can show us. Becoming a mother is a singular experience that can inflict trauma on both one’s self and the children for whom you’re responsible, making it fertile ground for directors looking to haunt our nightmares.

The latest entry in the subgenre is “The Beldham,” a new horror film that stars Patricia Heaton as an aging mother who takes her daughter and newborn granddaughter into her home. Mike Flanagan is back with his new horror series, The Fall of the House of Usher, an adaptation of the famous Edgar Allan Poe short story, and as you would expect, he has pretty much delivered it. "What if 'Succession' but Edgar Allan Poe?" is a pretty damn fine pitch for a horror series if you ask me, especially when it's coming from Mike Flanagan. The modern horror maestro has been a practical machine for Netflix these last several years, churning out hit after hit like "Gerald's Game," "The Haunting of Hill House," and "The Haunting of Bly Manor." He's since secured a deal to develop projects for Amazon Studios, but before he leaves, he's gifted Netflix with one final offering. Titled "The Fall of the House of Usher," the show sees Flanagan turning his eye to the works of the father of Gothic horror fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, as filtered through the modern-day world of cutthroat corporate culture and familial dynasties. It's a compelling hook and the official trailer promises we're in for a terrifying journey across eight episodes.

Will there be a way to stop this mysterious individual from the past, or will the Ushers realize that death is inevitable?

The first trailer for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” has arrived, and it’s positively brimming with Poe. The limited series is set to premiere all eight episodes on Netflix on Oct. 12.

This first look jumps between several unsettling scenes, from lurking ravens to murderous ladies and seemingly other-worldly creatures. As Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) curtly reveals that the family will “exhaust our arsenal until the threat’s neutralized,” Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) pours over an active crime scene. The limited series from Intrepid Pictures is “based on multiple works from Poe,” and Netflix recently announced that “Usher” will premiere on October 12, 2023.

Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix horror series, The Fall of the House of Usher, has released its official trailer.

Usher is an ambitious remix of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, taking some of his best-known tales and weaving them into an overarching story of a dynastic family suffering a mysterious series of calamities.

Flanagan has become the streamer’s literary horror maestro, with previous projects including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and adaptations of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep.

One of my most anticipated releases of 2023 has been Mike Flanagan's latest series, The Fall of the House of Usher. Based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and with a tremendous cast bringing this story to life, we now have an official release date of October 12th. A limited, 8-episode series, we have a look at the teaser poster and the official synopsis, which sheds a little more light on this modern-day tale:

Netflix confirmed Thursday that Flanagan's latest effort, The Fall of the House of Usher, has landed a fall premiere date.

All eight episodes of the limited series are set to premiere Thursday, October 12, 2023.

"Stranger Things" might be Netflix's flagship show, but it turns out that Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" is another crown jewel for the streamer. Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.

Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, which serves as the basis for the show, features themes of madness, family, isolation and identity.

It’s been a long road for the series, which was halfway through production when Langella was fired and his scenes had to be reshot.
