Writer and actor Mark Gatiss continues the Christmas ghost story tradition with a new entry in BBC’s annual A Ghost Story for Christmas anthology series. Variety reports that the filmmaker will helm Woman of Stone as the next entry.
Woman of Stone adapts E. Nesbit’s “Man-Size in Marble“ and follows a newlywed couple caught in a Christmas Eve nightmare.
In the holiday special, “The couple are settling into a small cottage in a quiet village when their idyll is overshadowed by the superstitious warnings of their housekeeper, Mrs. Dorman, and the legend of the village church’s tomb effigies – a pair of marble knights who are said to rise from their slabs on Christmas Eve. Jack dismisses this is as mere folklore. But as the fateful night draws near, he feels drawn to the church, leaving Laura at home, all alone.”

The first look of Éanna Hardwicke as Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane alongside Steve Coogan as his embattled Irish national manager Mick McCarthy, has been revealed from upcoming comedy biopic “Saipan.”
The film — first announced earlier in the year by Variety — chronicles one of the most infamous moments in Irish sporting history, when Keane and McCarthy had a very public falling out. Alongside Hardwicke and Coogan, the supporting cast includes Alice Lowe (“Sightseers”), Jamie Beamish (“Derry Girls”), Alex Murphy (“Young Offenders”), Harriet Cains (“Bridgerton”) and Peter McDonald (“The Batman”).
“Saipan” is being directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa — the duo behind “Good Vibrations” and “Ordinary Love” — — working from an original script by Paul Fraser (“Dead Man’s Shoes”). Bankside Films is handling sales and will be showing a promo to buyers at the American Film Market.

Amazon enthusiastically announced the Sept. 19 release date for A Very Royal Scandal with the declaration, “The critically acclaimed A Very … Scandal anthology is back!”
My primary questions include: Was “Scandal” included so that nobody would think A Very Royal Scandal was, in some way, a part of a franchise that perhaps started with 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel? Does your average television viewer even accept the existence of the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise? And, perhaps most sincerely, even if we acknowledge that the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise exists, what does it mean? What are the unifying characteristics between 2018’s A Very English Scandal, 2021’s A Very British Scandal and now A Very Royal Scandal, a trio of limited series without an overlapping character, star, writer or director?
The first two installments focused on pre-Internet kerfuffles stirred up by the British press, while A Very Royal Scandal...

Follow Emily Maitlis journey as a News night journalist and Prince Andrew's disastrous interview with her. The story will examine the actions of Maitlis and Prince Andrew in the lead-up to the interview, the groundbreaking event itself, the questions left in its wake that changed lives forever. The latest Prince Andrew project has dropped trailer.
A Very Royal Scandal, which launches in a fortnight, stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced Prince with Ruth Wilson playing the role of his interviewer Emily Maitlis.
A Very Royal Scandal is a three-part TV series as opposed to Scoop, the Netflix feature that starred Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. It is the third in the A Very… series that Amazon has previously co-produced with the BBC, although this one will only air on Prime Video. Unlike Scoop, Maitlis is involved with this one as an EP.
In the trailer, Wilson’s Maitlis can be seen pursuing the story that would make her a global household name and destroy the Prince’s reputation in a pivotal moment in British history, which saw him buckle under questions around his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and make a sea of humiliating utterances.

Tensions were running high as Ireland’s squad prepared for the 2002 World Cup on the tropical island of Saipan. But little did manager Mick McCarthy know the biggest challenge lay not in winning matches, but keeping peace between two of soccer’s fiercest competitors – Roy Keane and himself. BAFTA nominees Steve Coogan and Éanna Hardwicke are set to bring these iconic figures’ volatile relationship to the big screen in the upcoming film “Saipan.”
Directed by the team behind acclaimed sports drama “Ordinary Love,” the movie chronicles that fateful week where the captain’s legendary temper came to a head with McCarthy’s no-nonsense management. As the island’s sweltering heat matched the rising temperatures between the strong-willed personalities, their confrontation spelled doom for Ireland’s World Cup dreams.
“A million words have been written analyzing what sparked such an explosive fallout,” noted producers John Keville and Macdara Kelleher. Details have remained scarce – until now.

Fast-rising and BAFTA-nominated Irish star Éanna Hardwicke is set to play Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane in upcoming Irish feature “Saipan,” Variety can reveal. Hardwicke will be joined by two-time Oscar nominee Steve Coogan, who will star as Mick McCarthy, the former Ireland soccer manager with whom Keane had an infamous falling out.
“Saipan” is being directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa — the duo behind the critically-lauded 2013 Irish comedy-drama “Good Vibrations” and the 2019 romance “Ordinary Love,” starring Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville — working from an original script by Paul Fraser (“Dead Man’s Shoes”), with production set to start this summer.
The film’s title comes from the infamous so-called “Saipan Incident” in 2002, when Keane was captaining the Irish national side ahead of the FIFA World Cup finals in Japan. While preparing on the tiny island of Saipan, the soccer star — known for his hot-headed temperament...

Those who have been carefully studying the credits of U.K. magazine photoshoots and fashion campaigns over the last few years will likely have come across the name Pip. The London-based photographer, who hails from Yorkshire in the north of England, has quietly become a go-to for high-end brands and glossy publications, working with the likes of Prada, Dior, Bulgari and Louis Vuitton and capturing a who’s who of contemporary stars including Paul Mescal, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrew Scott, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Will Sharpe, Milly Alcock and many more.
But Pip, whose real name is Ben Seed — Pip is a nickname, coming from his surname, that he’s had since he was a child — has now ventured down that oft-traveled path from photography to filmmaking. “Twain” marks his debut, a short film he wrote and directed that moves away from the more glamorous fashion world he’s used to and into grittier,...

Ollie West is superb as a sensitive misfit who inadvertently causes a terrible tragedy in this atmospheric family drama
Beautiful West Cork is photographed like a crime scene, chilly and sinister, in this atmospheric family drama about grief and guilt, and the life-changing burden of causing a terrible tragedy. In his first acting role Ollie West is superb as Kevin, a sensitive, moody teenager with chipped black nail varnish. Kevin is constantly in trouble; he’s nothing like his army veteran dad (David O’Hara), or popular big brother Robbie (Éanna Hardwicke), whose easy smile wins him the girl they both like. Kevin feels like an outsider in his family; partly the problem is that he reminds everyone of his mum, an artist who died in circumstances that make her unmentionable in their house.
The family is already bewildered by grief. Then, at around the 30-minute mark, something happens: Kevin inadvertently...

Two of Britain’s biggest stars won top honors at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday: Timothy Spall finally prevailed in the Best Actor race after three previous bids while Sarah Lancashire collected a bookend Best Actress award for the third and final season of “Happy Valley”; she’d won for season 2 back in 2017 and has a supporting prize for “Last Tango in Halifax” as well.
Backstage, Spall readily admitted, “I’m over the moon about this. I just am. So often the bridesmaid, today I catch the bouquet.” He then pondered the importance and meaning of awards ceremonies. “When you keep losing them, you think they’re a load of bollocks. And then you win and you think well, actually… Really, I suppose, in a way, they are both — they’re magnificent and they are an in-house thing. But it’s a profession — a dodgy, shaky, insecure profession that occasionally celebrates itself,...

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

Spall emerged as the winner ahead of Brian Cox for Succession, Dominic West for The Crown, Kane Robinson for Top Boy, Papa Essiedu for The Lazarus Project and Steve Coogan for The Reckoning.
Lashana Lynch presented the British actor with the prize.
His win meant The Crown went home empty-handed despite being up for four acting awards and a number of others.
In true-crime drama The Sixth Commandment, from Wild Mercury Productions and True Vision Productions, aired on BBC1 last July in the UK. It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards, with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.
Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.
The international category also saw upset, with frontrunners “Succession,” “Beef” and “The Bear” all failing to win the award. They were instead beaten by little-known French series “Class Act.” It was a fact acknowledged by the show’s shocked lead actor Laurent Lafitte, who, upon accepting the award, told the audience: “Please watch our show. It’s called ‘Class Act,’ it’s quite good — not just because I’m starring in it.”

Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.
