Texas Chainsaw Massacre Timeline, Explained
Image
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the oldest and most notable movie franchises in the horror genre, and after 50 years, it's still going strong. That being said, like all iconic series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is not without its issues. One of the most notable things fans complain about is the significantly convoluted timeline, which can make it difficult to dive in and start watching. With multiple films spread out over five decades -- and different filmmakers delivering their own interpretation of the ghoulish Sawyer family -- establishing a single coherent story thread is nearly impossible.

There are nine movies in the franchise, with the first movie, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, dating back to 1974. The subsequent installments in the series establish a complicated timeline, with many films acting as simple sequels, while others fit under the remake, reboot, and prequel umbrellas. Still, the premise is pretty simple,...

Official Hell Fest Masks Are Coming Soon from Trick or Treat Studios
Tony Todd, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Stephen Conroy, Matt Mercurio, Amy Forsyth, Christian James, and Roby Attal in Hell Fest (2018)
Last year's carnival slasher movie Hell Fest is having three of its featured masks made available to the public from Trick or Treat Studios. The officially licensed masks are now available to pre-order, featuring The Other, Hell Devil, and The Executioner. The latter two will retail for $9.99, with The Other costing a bit more at $24.99. Described as perfect, screen-accurate replicas, the masks are sculpted by Tony Gardner and are expected to ship in August or September.

Released in 2018, Hell Fest is directed by Gregory Plotkin using a screenplay by Seth M. Sherwood, Blair Butler, and Akela Cooper. It takes place in a traveling horror carnival known simply as "Hell Fest." The story follows a group of teens attending the theme park only to discover a masked serial killer is intent on killing them all for real. For some horror fans, it was great to see a new, original slasher movie playing on the big screen.

‘Hell Fest’ DVD Review

Sherwood, Blair Butler, William Penick, Christopher Sey, Akela Cooper | Directed by Gregory Plotkin

Hell Fest is the latest simplistic, conventional, horror film from the depths of the money-grubbing Hollywood machine. Helmed by director Gregory Plotkin, only his second feature after highly successful stints as an editor on numerous productions, ranging from Jordan Peele’s Get Out to the Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams comedy Game Night. Plotkin is most noticeably and well known to have been a longtime series editor on the long-enduring and softly effective Paranormal Activity franchise, even helming the fifth entry Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, with little to no acclaim or credit. ‘Hell Fest’ Trailer: When Halloween Theme Park Gets A Little Too Realistic
Tony Todd, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Stephen Conroy, Matt Mercurio, Amy Forsyth, Christian James, and Roby Attal in Hell Fest (2018)
Folks love those Halloween-themed amusement parks — the ones where ghouls dart out of the shadows and monsters lie in wait to scare the bejeezus out of their quarry. But what if a maniacal killer decides to up the realism factor to 11 while the patrons it’s all part of the show?

Here is the first teaser trailer for Hell Fest, in which just a creepy scenario plays out. The logline: College student Natalie (Amy Forsyth) is visiting her best friend Brooke (Reign Edwards) and her roommate Taylor (Bex Taylor-Klaus). It’s Halloween time, so the trio and their boyfriends — like everyone else – are headed for Hell Fest, a sprawling labyrinth of rides, games and mazes that travels the country and happens to be in town. But for one visitor, Hell Fest is not the attraction: It is a hunting ground, an opportunity to slay in plain view of a gawking audience,...

‘Leatherface’ DVD Review
Stars: Stephen Dorff, James Bloor, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, Jessica Madsen, Finn Jones, Lili Taylor, Nicole Andrews | Written by Seth M. Sherwood | Directed by Julien Maury, Alexandre Bustillo

Want to know the shocking incidents, twisted psychology and outrageous bloodshed that led up to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the classic 1974 horror? Well, if your nerves can stand it, directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the duo who helmed the extreme French masterpiece Inside, will take you on one of the most terrifying experiences of your life in this stunning prequel. Four teenage patients escape from a mental institution, kidnap a nurse and take her on a road trip to hell. Pursued by a deranged lawman bent on revenge, the human skin-masked monster is about to appear…

Now that’s what the press for Leatherface states but – and this is a huge caveat – this iteration of Leatherface is a prequel Only to Texas Chainsaw 3D,...

Here’s When Leatherface Will Slice Its Way Onto Blu-Ray
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury‘s Leatherface is yet another unique interpretation of Texas Chainsaw tonality. This is the beginnings of evil; a moody dive behind the monster’s mask. After The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 introduced a colorful misery, after roadkill grindhouse turned darkly comical, after 2003’s “gritty, dark reboot.” Here, the filmmakers behind Inside, Livide and Among The Living use Seth M. Sherwood’s screenplay to explore what could drive one child to his slaughterhouse obsession – with mixed results.

Though certainly not the franchise’s worst outing, it’s far from an instant classic and in some rather surprising news, it seems as if the origin story will be heading to Blu-Ray a lot sooner than we expected. That’s because we now know that Leatherface will be yours to take home on December 19th.

As far as special features go, there’s not much, but here’s...

As a Southern-strong franchise entry, it’s certainly not the worst (cough – Texas Chainsaw 3D – cough). But as a Bustillo and Maury product? Well, let’s just say we’ve seen them be more aggressive, better inspired and vastly richer when developing human characteristics.

Sherwood’s tale opens on a celebratory gathering. Verna Sawyer (Lili Taylor) presents a young Jed Saywer (Boris Kabakchiev) with his first chainsaw. Happy birthday! Jed...

Leatherface (2017)
Meet Ma Sawyer in Creepy New Leatherface Clip
Leatherface (2017)
Liosngate has debuted a new clip for Leatherface, which delves into the origins of the title character at the heart of the gruesome events portrayed in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This new clip gives us our first look at Verna Sawyer, the mother of the child that will eventually become the title character, along with a vindictive Texas Ranger named Hal Hartman (Stephen Dorff). It's clear that Verna and Hal have quite a bit of history.

The clip debuted on Yahoo! Movies, just as this movie becomes available in an exclusive early window for DirecTV subscribers starting today, before the movie hits theaters October 20. The clip shows Verna angrily confronting this Texas Ranger, who has one of her young sons locked up in the back of his squad car. Verna protests that he has no right to do that, when the Ranger explains that the young boy isn't actually under arrest,...

The Saw Comes Home in New Leatherface Poster
Leatherface (2017)
With less than a week left before Leatherface will be available for DirecTV subscribers, and a month before the theatrical release, Lionsgate has debuted a new poster, which gives us our first look at the character who will eventually become the sadistic killer known as Leatherface. This one-sheet comes just a month after a particularly gruesome Leatherface trailer, which adds to the mystery of just who Leatherface really is. The poster doesn't reveal any obvious details, but shows the title character walking towards the Sawyer home, with a bloody chainsaw in hand.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this Leatherface prequel surfaced last May, when a new Leatherface photo revealed Jessica Madsen's character, one of the four teenagers who escaped from a mental hospital and kidnapped a nurse. Since one of these characters will ultimately be revealed as the true Leatherface, there is technically a chance that this...

Latest Leatherface Poster Gets A Little Too Close For Comfort
This Halloween, prepare to witness the true origins of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

We are, of course, referring to Leatherface, Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s long-anticipated prequel that has taken on a greater meaning since the death of Tobe Hooper, a recognized mainstay of Hollywood’s horror genre thanks to his involvement in Poltergeist, Salem’s Lot and of course, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which spawned a million nightmares in 1974 with its tale of deranged cannibals residing in America’s Deep South.

Now, almost 45 years since its inception, Maury and Bustillo are prepped and ready to deliver a freaky origin story centering on one of cinema’s greatest movie monsters. Working from a script penned by Seth M. Sherwood, Leatherface is little over a month away from its limited theatrical release, and the folks over at Bloody Disgusting have relayed a creepy new poster to stoke the embers of excitement.

New Leatherface Trailer Gets Nasty with Its Chainsaw Violence
R.A. Mihailoff in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
Bust out your chainsaws! Or if you're on the wrong end of things, some running shoes might be appropriate, because Leatherface is coming. The long-delayed Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel is finally getting released next month and now we have a brand new green-band trailer to check out, which gives us a much better idea of what to expect in terms of story. This Leatherface trailer may be green-band, but it is not in any way shy about presenting us the violent mess that this movie is going to be.

The new green-band trailer for Leatherface comes to us from Entertainment Weekly ahead of the movie's release. Lionsgate is first releasing the movie on September 21, 2017, where the movie will be made available exclusively on DirecTV. Eerie Leatherface Poster Teases The Birth Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Leatherface and Jigsaw, two horror flicks prepped and ready for this year’s crowded Halloween season, have kick-started their respective marketing campaigns, and they seem to have come at the expense of the local livestock.

Whereas Michael and Peter Spierig’s Saw sequel has incorporated severed pig heads into its suitably creepy character portraits – character portraits designed to spotlight John Kramer’s many disciples more than anything else – the latest one-sheet for Leatherface features a mysterious individual dressed in dungarees. Oh, and they also happen to be sporting a cow’s head for added effect. Because apparently a prequel movie chronicling the origins behind that infamous Texas Chainsaw Massacre wasn’t enough to send a shiver or three down our spines.

Directing from a script penned by Seth M. Sherwood, Julien Maury, and Alexandre Bustillo are behind the lens for Leatherface, which is due to premiere via DirecTV in two months’ time.

New Photos From Leatherface Get A Little Bloody
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a saga so embedded in the modern-day horror genre, that it’s almost difficult to imagine a future without it.

Of course, we know that Hollywood is partial to rebooting/resurrecting a dormant horror franchise for a new generation – think of Andy Muschietti’s It, Friday the 13th and, to a lesser extent, Jigsaw – and come October, directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo will carve out a new chapter in the storied history of TCM in the form of Leatherface.

It’s a prequel to Tobe Hooper’s genre classic of 1974, when a group of unsuspecting teens stumbled upon a cannibal family and Leatherface himself, the serial killer famed for wearing a mask made of human skin. Gnarly stuff, by anyone’s standards, and at least based on these new photos for the film, which come to us by way of Bloody Disgusting, the Texas Chainsaw...

A Nightmarish Legacy Begins To Unfold In This Red Band Leatherface Trailer
This Halloween, Lionsgate is plotting double trouble.

On the one hand, the studio is working closely with Michael and Peter Spierig to rustle up Jigsaw, the eighth Saw movie that’s poised to carve out a new chapter in the blood-drenched lore of John Kramer (Tobin Bell). It’s by no means the only marquee horror picture due to arrive in October though, as Lionsgate and Millennium Films are also preparing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel movie known simply as Leatherface.

A minimalist, yet instantly recognizable title isn’t the only thing that the two projects have in common, either, as Leatherface is also on the verge of becoming the eighth entry into the Texas Chainsaw series later this year. Pitched as “a brutal and nihilistic road movie,” that sense of legacy isn’t lost on co-directors Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, who are working from a script by Seth M. Sherwood.

Leatherface Release Date and Gory First Look Revealed
Leatherface (2017)
The first look at the upcoming prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Leatherface is here and it looks pretty bloody. The last time we got to see some action from the legendary horror character of Leatherface was in 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D, which was a direct sequel to the original 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which ignored the 2nd and 3rd movies as well as the remakes. Though it made some money at the box office, it was hailed as terrible by critics and fans alike, many calling it laughable. So it's about time that we get some news on the upcoming prequel.

Leatherface is an exclusive DirecTV release set for September 21, 2017. But those wanting to revel in the gore up on the big screen will get their wish, with a limited theatrical run and full VOD release through Lionsgate set in time for Halloween, hitting October 20, 2017!

Texas Chainsaw Prequel Leatherface Coming in October
Leatherface (2017)
After a whole lot of waiting around for seemingly no good reason, the long-delayed Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel is finally going to hit theaters this year. And it will be here just in time for Halloween. Leatherface (no, not Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III), which has been done filming for a very long time now and has been awaiting a release, is now set to be released this October.

The news comes courtesy of producer Christa Campbell, who took to Twitter to share the news. Fans have been asking for months now as to when they can see Leatherface, because the project was announced more than three years ago and wrapped filming quite some time ago. Here's what Campbell had to say about it.

"To all our leatherface fans out there. The movie will be released in October #texaschainsaw @latigrobman #Leatherface"

Is Leatherface a Girl in the Texas Chainsaw Prequel?
Leatherface (2017)
Last April, new details about the long-awaited Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface were revealed, teasing the plot has quite the interesting twist. In March, it was reported that British actor Sam Strike had been cast as the title character, but it was later explained that he is actually playing one of four characters who could be Leatherface. Last week, producer Christa Campbell revealed the first photo from this horror prequel, which hints that Leatherface may actually be a young girl.

Sam Strike is joined by Sam Coleman, James Bloor and Jessica Madsen as the four teenagers who escape from a mental institution, all of whom have an affinity for wielding chainsaws. They kidnap a young nurse (Vanessa Grasse) as they make their escape, with a local sheriff (Stephen Dorff) trying to track them down. By the end of the movie, one of these teenagers will ultimately be revealed as Leatherface.

R.A. Mihailoff in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
'Leatherface' Poster Teases 'Texas Chainsaw' Origin
R.A. Mihailoff in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
The slasher flick is about to tread into untested territory with Leatherface. It's not unique for showing us a killer's origin story. Halloween and Friday the 13th both did that right out of the gate. What we've never seen are the teenage years for any of these monsters. Leatherface changes all that by delving into the mythos and early years of the killer at the heart of 1974's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Millennium Films has unleashed the scary first poster for Leatherface, and it promises a gritty, rain-soaked excursion into the mind of a real Psycho.

Leatherface isn't just an origin story for the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's also a Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! type murder-mystery. A young nurse is kidnapped by four violent teens who escape from a mental hospital and take her on a road trip from hell. Pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge,...

Newcomer Vanessa Grasse Lands Leatherface Lead
Leatherface’s first victim revealed? Newcomer Vanessa Grasse has just landed the female lead in Millenium Films’ Texas Chainsaw prequel Leatherface, TheWrap is reporting.

She’ll play Lizzy, a young nurse at a mental hospital who is kidnapped by a group of deranged teenage patients. Trapped with young sadists only starting to embrace their capacity for evil, she finds herself on a road trip from hell with her only hope being an obsessed lawman (Stephen Dorff) with an axe to grind. Little do any of them know that, during the chase, one of the teens’ minds will be warped and disfigured into the terrifying figure known as Leatherface.

Grasse, out of the University of Leeds’ theater program, won the role because of her naturalistic audition and sense of innocence, beating out over 90 young actresses in and outside the U.S. after a grueling casting search. She’ll be joined in...

'Leatherface' Story & Characters Revealed, Stephen Dorff Joins
Sam Strike
Last month, we reported that British actor Sam Strike was cast as the title character in Millennium Films' Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface. Just a few days later, however, it was revealed that Sam Strike is actually playing one of three teenage psychopaths, one of whom will be ultimately revealed as Leatherface. Today, we have word from Badass Digest that Stephen Dorff has signed on to play the sheriff who tracks down these deranged kids.

The site also reports that it will actually be four teenagers, not three, while confirming last month's report that Angela Bettis is playing the matriarch of the Sawyer clan. Newcomer James Bloor is playing the second of four teenage maniacs, all of whom have an affinity for using chainsaws. These unstable kids are on the lam after escaping from a mental institution, taking a nurse as hostage. The movie is set in the 1970s,...

Get the Gory Details on the Horror Prequel 'Leatherface'
We're about due for another "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" movie. The last one was "Texas Chainsaw 3D," way back in 2013, and it focused on a young woman (Alexandra Daddario) who turns out to be related to the chainsaw-wielding maniac known as Leatherface. That didn't go so well, so the writers for this installment of Leatherface's misadventures have decided it's time to explore how our villain became so downright nasty.

In the movie, three teen inmates from a mental hospital escape, kidnap a nurse, and hit the road. According to Deadline, "they are pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge," played by Stephen Dorff. Bloody-Disgusting is describing the film as a sort of mystery. So, which of these apples will turn out to be rotten to the core?

"Leatherface" was written by Seth M. Sherwood, making his feature-length debut. The directors behind the project, Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury,...

Stephen Dorff On For Leatherface
Leatherface (2017)
When news about the latest stab at a Texas Chainsaw prequel, now simply called Leatherface, arrived, it was that EastEnders’ Sam Strike was being considered for the title role. There’s no confirmation on his status, but Deadline reports that Stephen Dorff is on for a key character. Leatherface focuses on the very early days of the psychopath who will one day don the terrifying mask and swing the rumbling weapon. We meet him as a violent teen that breaks out of a mental hospital with three other inmates, kidnaps a nurse and takes her on the road trip from hell. But as they make good their escape, the men are pursued by a deranged lawman that has revenge on his mind. Dorff’s character is the dogged Texas Ranger Hal Hartman who sets out on the vengeful trail. Seth M. Sherwood wrote the script for this one, with Alexandre Bustillo...

More Details On The New Leatherface
Some new casting details about the young Leatherface in the upcoming "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel reveal that the story is going to take a different approach than you might expect.

The Wrap reports that the film will be "presented as a mystery of sorts about three teenage psychopaths, one of whom grows up to be Leatherface."

Sam Strike, who was reportedly cast as the young Leatherface earlier this week, will play one of the trio named Jackson. James Bloor has also just joined the cast as Ike, one other other candidates, with the third yet to be cast.

The story will center around the kids who break out of an institution. Also onboard is Angela Bettis as the Sawyer family matriarch Verna, a part played by Marilyn Burns in 2013's "Texas Chainsaw 3D".

'Texas Chainsaw' Prequel Mystery Asks: Who Is Leatherface?
Leatherface (2017)
While it was reported earlier in the week that EastEnders star Sam Strike is starring as a teenage Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw prequel, that may not be entirely true. While he is confirmed to be playing a killer in this latest entry in the horror franchise, the movie will actually be a mystery that revolves around 3 teenage psychopaths. And the big question at the end of the movie will be: Who is Leatherface?

Relative unknown James Bloor will play the second teenage psychopath in a role that is described exactly like Sam Strike's character. Both will play budding young maniacs who have an affinity for the chainsaw. And 'saw', as any true The Texas Chainsaw Massacre fan knows, is family! At this point, it is unknown if different actors will play Leatherface at different stages of his life, or if it will all take place in one time period.

Texas Chainsaw Prequel Leatherface Gains New Cast Members And Story Details
Millenium Films’ forthcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel is setting up a new origin story for the franchise’s power-tool wielding baddie – and a new cast of characters to tell it.

Currently titled Leatherface, the movie hit headlines earlier this week with the news that Eastenders‘ star Sam Strike had signed on to play a young version of the psychotic killer. In light of more casting announcements, it seems Strike won’t be the only one with murderous intent.

Per The Wrap, which revealed that newcomer James Bloor had also signed on, Leatherface is described as “a mystery of sorts about three teenage psychopaths, one of whom grows up to be Leatherface.” Bloor will play Ike a “budding young maniac” who, much like Strike’s character Jackson, may develop and at some later point become Leatherface.

As the outlet states, there’s no clear indication as to the nature of this rebooted origin tale.

Casting News for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Prequel ‘Leatherface’
For somebody to drive a chainsaw through a human body, swing a mallet down on someone's head, and wear another person's skin on their own, they likely had some tumultuous teen years. Though we got a taste of what Leatherface's, aka Thomas Hewitt's, younger years were like in Jonathan Liebesman's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, we haven't had a full helping of those growing pains-filled times, but French filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are looking to change that with Leatherface, an upcoming prequel to Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. From Millennium Films, Leatherface will at the very least explore a slice of the titular antagonist's teen life and although cameras haven't started rolling on the project yet, a growing cast is being assembled, with one of the actors potentially set to play the legendary backroads killer.

TheWrap recently reported that Sam Strike (EastEnders...

Sam Strike To Play A Young Leatherface
"EastEnders" actor Sam Strike has scored the role of the young version of Leatherface in the upcoming "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel reports The Wrap.

Events of the film reportedly lead into the 1974 original. Strike plays a teenage version of the character who resides in a mental institution until he joins a pack of fellow patients who all break out and go on the run from the authorities.

Seth M. Sherwood ("Black Mass") has penned the film which French helmers Julien Maury & Alexandre Bustillo ("Inside") will direct. The project marks a second prequel in the franchise following "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" which served as one to the 2003 reboot.

Strike dropped hints that he'd scored the lead role in a major U.S. film yesterday, quickly leading to now unfounded speculation that he'd landed the role of Peter Parker in the Marvel-approved "Spider-Man" reboot.
