Irish filmmaker Myrid Carten’s feature documentary A Want In Her scooped the audience award at the 23rd Dublin International Film Festival (Diff) on Sunday, March 2.

Austrian writer-director Bernhard Wenger‘s feature directing debut Peacock dissects the themes of identity and self-presentation in the age of social media but it doesn’t hit you over the head with a hammer. Actually, it doesn’t even mention social media much at all.

Germany’s film industry may have been hit hard by the economic slowdown, resulting in an overall gloomy outlook, but it’s still celebrating the biggest number ever of local films and co-productions at this year’s Berlinale and looking forward to a diverse lineup of 2025 releases, among them a number of high-profile sequels.

Compounding the sector’s overall predicament was the collapse of the federal government in November, forcing snap elections scheduled for Feb. 23. The political crisis left an ambitious reform of the country’s federal film funding system only partially implemented and a matter to be tackled by the next government.

The industry nevertheless welcomed the current government’s last-minute extension and increase of two key funding incentives in December that has ensured planning security for producers, studio operators and production service providers.

In the meantime, the local film community is cheering the strong showing of German titles at the Berlin Film Festival.

The Austrian movie Peacock delves into what it means to feel real in a world that rewards pretense. Directed by Bernhard Wenger in his feature debut, it stars Albrecht Schuch as Matthias, a man who makes his living playing pretend. As one of the leaders of My Companion, a “friend for hire” agency, Matthias excels at morphing into whatever companion his clients need – proud son, devoted boyfriend, fun-loving friend. But living so much of his life in fabricated roles starts taking its toll.

When his long-time girlfriend Sophia grows tired of the inauthentic Matthias she sees at home, it sets him adrift. Without her grounding presence, he loses touch with who he truly is. As clients grow unhappy with his distracted performance and his private life spins out of control, Matthias comes to a breaking point. He must confront the empty shell he’s become and seek his real self amid all the pretense.

Considerate, cultured, polite, patient, a good listener, easy on the eye: Matthias is the kind of man almost anyone would be glad to have as company. In turn, he’s glad to be company to almost anyone: a middle-aged singleton seeking a date to a classical concert, an elderly married woman who can’t talk to her husband, a man his age who needs a fake boyfriend to secure an apartment lease. Just because he’s getting paid for his companionship in all these situations doesn’t mean he treats them with less care than he would any of his own, uncommissioned relationships — which might be a problem, he realizes, by the time his girlfriend walks out on him, exasperatedly saying that he “doesn’t seem real anymore.” That pithy remark sends Matthias into a tailspin, a crisis of selfhood, that gives Bernhard Wenger’s superb black comedy “Peacock” its unpredictable arc.

MK2 Films has boarded Bernhard Wenger’s feature debut, “Peacock,” a tragicomedy headlined by Albrecht Schuch, the German actor who starred in “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “System Crasher.”

An up-and-coming Austrian director, Wenger developed the script at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinefondation residency and was part of Berlinale Talents in 2020. His shorts, including “Keeping Balance,” “Guy Proposes to His Girlfriend on a Mountain” and “Excuse Me, I’m Looking for the Ping-Pong Room and My Girlfriend,” have played at festivals in Chicago, Palm Springs and Nashville, among others.

MK2 Films’ team, spearheaded by Fionnuala Jamison, is kicking off sales on “Peacock” at the American Film Market. The project is being pitched as a “corrosive comedy” capturing “the essence of human relationships.”

The film chronicles the saga of Maja and her family as they embark on a journey to the desolate and remote island Stormskerry. Their daily existence becomes an unwavering struggle for survival, but Maja, holding on to her deep-rooted connection to the island, remains there despite hardships.

The cast includes “Thin Blue Line” star Amanda Jansson and Linus Troedsson, as well as Desmond Eastwood, who appeared in “Normal People.” The film was shot in Swedish and English.

To no one’s surprise, Edward Berger’s epic WWI drama All Quiet on the Western Front is the front runner for this year’s German film awards. The Netflix feature, which picked up nine Oscar nominations and won four — both records for a German movie — received 12 nominations on Friday for Germany’s top cinema honor, known as the Lola.

All Quiet on the Western Front scooped the Best International Feature Film Oscar this evening, after earlier taking the Cinematography trophy and then winning for Production Design and Original Score. Such categories in which it is also nominated, including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Sound are still to be unveiled. This is the first time a German title has taken the International Feature prize since 2006’s The Lives of Others.

In accepting the International Feature Oscar, director Edward Berger thanked his collaborators and family, and had special praise for an emotional All Quiet star Felix Kammerer saying, “This was your first movie and you carried us on your shoulders. Without you, none of us would be here.”

German musician Volker Bertelmann nudged out the competition to pick up his first Academy Award Sunday for Netflix’s war epic All Quiet on the Western Front.

The first German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war novel about World War I, “All Quiet on the Western Front” is second only to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and tied with “The Banshees of Inisherin” for the most Oscar nominations, nine. Among non-English films, only 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and 2018’s “Roma” have ever received more nominations, and the six below-the-line noms for “All Quiet” tie it with “Crouching Tiger” for the most ever for a film not in English.

In addition to its Best Picture and Best International Feature Film nominations, the Netflix release has received noms for cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, sound, visual effects and adapted screenplay. At the Ee British Academy Film Awards on Feb.

There’s a lovely moment toward the end of All Quiet On The Western Front, sandwiched between several truly awful moments (and one absolutely devastating one). Felix Kammerer’s Paul Bäumer tries to walk his friend Kat (Albrecht Schuch) back to a field hospital in a church. He’s been shot, and he’s bleeding badly. Trying to stay chipper, Kat remembers a word game he used to play. You rhyme something with the last line someone sang. “Nothing rhymes with trifle,” Kat says. “Nothing.” Paul thinks. “Rifle rhymes with trifle,” he says. The two men laugh. It’s the last time anyone laughs in All Quiet On The Western Front.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” won a whopping seven awards at the 2023 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), including Best Film, and many are wondering how they can watch the gritty World War I drama.

Directed by Edward Berger, whom the British Academy named Best Director, the film is an adaptation of the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque.

A staple of many academic reading lists, the first English language adaptation of Remarque’s novel was made in 1930. The film netted Lewis Milestone his second Best Director Oscar and won Outstanding Production (later renamed Best Picture). A TV film adaptation was released in 1979 and was also lauded, winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Made for Television.

On Sunday, the winners for the 76th annual Ee British Academy Film Awards were announced live during a ceremony hosted by Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This year, the event was streamed live in the U.S. via BritBox, the streaming platform known for its collection of British films and TV series.

Ahead of the event, Netflix’s German war film, All Quiet on the Western Front, was the frontrunner with 14 nominations and was followed by The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once, both of which garnered 10 nods each. Other films with multiple nominations included The Batman, Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick.

On the acting side, a majority of the contenders were first-time nominees, including Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and this awards season’s breakout star,...

As the BAFTA Film Awards got rolling on Sunday, all eyes were on “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” Martin McDonagh’s pitch black Irish comedy won several of the biggest acting awards to start the day, including Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon and Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan. McDonagh also took home the award for Original Screenplay, solidifying his frontrunner status in that category at the Oscars.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” set a BAFTA record by picking up 14 nominations, and the ceremony was a reminder of how much BAFTA voters loved the film. Edward Berger’s war movie ultimately won seven awards including Best Film and Best Director.

BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 12. And since voting for Oscars starts on March 2, just 11 days after the BAFTAs, these awards could be doubly influential.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” dominated the BAFTA Awards nominations with 14 bids, tying “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) as the most nominated non-English language film in BAFTA history. Edward Berger‘s German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel is, unsurprisingly, expected to win Best Film Not in the English Language, but it’s only predicted to win two other awards — cinematography and sound — for a grand total of three. Is that too few for a film with 14 bids?

Perhaps. Eight of the last 10 years had nomination leaders in the double digits. Of those, five films took home at least five statuettes. “The Favourite” (2018) scored seven wins from 12 bids. “Gravity” (2013) nabbed six from 11. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) and “Dune” (2021) both netted five trophies from 11 nominations, while “La La Land” (2016) converted five of its 12 bids into wins.

The BAFTAs are the British equivalent of the Oscars, and due to their overlapping memberships, they might give us a preview of things to come. But the Brits might not be as interested in setting up the Oscars as they have been in recent years. For these awards a new jury system decided the nominees for acting and directing, leading to a unique lineup where most of the Oscar-nominated performers are missing and a number of under-the-radar contenders broke through instead.

The 76th annual BAFTA Awards nominations were revealed on January 19, just two days after the deadline for Oscar voters to weigh in with their choices for nominations.

The Bafta nominations for 2023 have been announced – and a huge record has been matched.

Leading the pack with 14 nominations is Netflix’s German-language All Quiet on the Western Front, which has equalled a record previously held by Ang Lee’s 2001 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

With 14 nods each, both films are the two international films to have received the most nominations in Bafta history.

Following close behind with 10 nominations each are The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Other films battling it out for the top awards include Elvis, Tár and British film Aftersun.

“I was always a big fan of the original movie, but I did feel while watching subsequent American or British war films that is a question of perspective that I can’t tell,” All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger said of his motivation in finally bringing a German version of the iconic World War I tale to the big screen.

“There is a different perspective on the war, that they can go out of it with pride or honor even and victoriously — you can tell that type of story. In Germany, you can’t tell that story.”

The All Quiet on the Western Front cast is just one of the elements contributing to the acclaimed for this Best Picture nominee. The Netflix film is based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, which was previously adapted for film in 1930 to great acclaim. The UK’s Altitude Films is teaming with UK theatre company Bristol Old Vic to screen a live stage production of Hamlet in over 300 UK and Ireland cinemas on April 6.

All Quiet on the Western Front is an incredibly affecting parable about the trauma of war, made more impactful b how old Paul and the other main characters are. Set in the fields of northern France in the final years of the First World War, the Oscar-nominated epic does an expert job of recreating the horrors of close-quarters early 20th Century combat. All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger has launched a new production label, Nine Hours, and signed a two-year first-look deal with production giant Fremantle.

Berger, riding high on the success of All Quiet, which picked up 9 Oscar nominations, including for best picture, launched the new company together with producing partners Luke Rivett (Corner Office, Berlin Station) and Jeanne Tremsal (So Long Daddy, See you in Hell).

Fremantle’s deal will give the company the first crack at Nine Hours’ television projects and second-look access to Berger’s new film pipeline.
