Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon” is finally coming to streaming. The filmmaker’s passion project “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” will stream on Max starting on Friday, Aug. 23.

The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.

Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1, which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2. The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.

Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

The film hits streaming following its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, which was regarded as a misfire for a big-budget title, at a gross of just over $34 million. While Warner Bros initially intended to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16 — in an unusual move — the sequel’s release has since been delayed for an indefinite period, the hope being to give audiences who have not yet caught up with Chapter 1 a chance to do so. Chapter 2 will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 playing there earlier in the day.

Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.

Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s films will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Kevin Costner’s long-awaited passion project “Horizon: An American Saga” is finally hitting theaters in two chapters.

Costner writes, directs, produces, and stars in the feature set across the entire Civil War. The “Yellowstone” actor wrote the script with Jon Baird, who makes his screenwriting debut.

Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”

It’s a This Is Us reunion of sorts for Gerald McRaney, who joins series creator Dan Fogelman’s new show starring Sterling K. Brown as a Secret Service agent leading the detail for James Marsden’s unnamed president.

In the dearly departed NBC drama, McRaney portrayed Dr. K, who advised Jack and Rebecca to adopt Randall (played by Brown).

Exclusive: Another This Is Us alum is joining series creator Dan Fogelman’s new Hulu drama. Gerald McRaney, who played the beloved Dr. K on the NBC family show, has been tapped for a recurring role on the untitled series, headlined by This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown.

Nicole Brydon Bloom is set as a series regular opposite Brown, James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson and Sarah Shahi, with Krys Marshall, Charlie Evans and Jon Beavers added as recurring.

McRaney and Brown are two of three This Is Us actors to win Emmys for their performances, along with the late Ron Cephas Jones.

The premise of Fogelman’s new drama has not been revealed but it is believed to revolve around the President (Marsden) and his Secret Service detail led by Brown’s character.

McRaney will portray Kane, the father of President (Marsden), a captain of industry and kingmaker.

One of the most audacious American debuts of the year, writer-director Beth de Araújo’s “Soft & Quiet” shocks one’s system from its opening moments and doesn’t ever slow down to let you fully process it as it happens. The debut feature from the Brazil-us filmmaker has sold in Scandinavia (NonStop Entertainment), Japan (New Select), Poland (Monolith Films) and the Middle East (Front Row).

As previously announced, Momentum Pictures will release the feature theatrically and on demand in North America and the UK from November 4.

Exclusive: Owen Crow Shoe has joined the ensemble cast of Kevin Costner’s epic Western film Horizon, which is currently shooting in Utah.

Shoe is a First Nations Blackfoot Canadian actor. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and raised on the Piikani Nation, the actor got his start when he was 20. After returning home from playing football in the Cjfl for the Kamloops Broncos, Shoe’s dad Chris Crow Shoe, who was working as a background performer riding horses for AMC’s Hell On Wheels, invited him to be a horse rider as well. Since then he’s been known for his work on 2015’s The Revenant, 2017’s Tin Star and 2019’s Hudson.

Blumhouse Productions is one of the biggest names in the horror genre these days – and the folks at Blumhouse were so impressed by writer/director Beth de Araújo’s feature debut Soft & Quiet that they decided to put the company name on the movie ahead of its festival premiere, even though they weren’t involved in the making of it. The film has since landed a distribution deal with Momentum Pictures in the US, Canada, and the UK, and will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release on November 4th.
