Our colleague Denys Hodson, who has died aged 84, was best known as an inspirational arts administrator. Judging by the quality and confidence of his writing when he was 17, however, he might have become a successful poet. Instead, after national service in the Palestine police force and a history degree from Oxford, he chose to go to into advertising, where he quickly made his mark.
But Denys found his true calling when, in an unexpected career change at the age of 42, he was appointed controller of arts and recreation by Thamesdown (later Swindon) borough council. Clearly impressed by his knowledge, vision and social commitment, the authority decided to back this very different kind of bureaucrat.
For 22 years, Denys led the council's outstanding arts and recreation department, appointing and fiercely supporting an extraordinary team of innovators and risk-takers who forged Swindon's reputation for public art, community dance and film alongside professional and amateur theatre facilities,...

Julie Goodwin has revealed that she would never be a "centrefold" model. The 41-year-old MasterChef star, who won the Australian reality cooking competition in 2009, said that she has grown to accept her size 14 to 16 body and doesn't bother dieting any more. Goodwin told New Idea magazine: "Just like my eye colour, my hair colour and the length of my legs are all determined by my genes, so is the shape of my body. So as long as I don't start piling on the kilos and becoming unfit and unhealthy, then I don't see a problem in not looking like a centrefold. "I have gone through periods when I've thought, 'This is what the height/weight chart says I should be, so I've got to do whatever it takes to be that'. Now, I live my life healthily and fully and I'm accepting of the hand I was dealt." Goodwin admitted...

The 40-year-old mother-of-three from the Central Coast, who won the amateur cooking competition in 2009, said that she has had to "toughen up" to deal with recent reports that she and her husband Mick are having relationship problems. "It was a load of crap," Goodwin told Sunday magazine. "That's probably the only downside of the whole thing, and I've learnt to take it in my stride. People who know and love me know what's true. Anyone who doesn't, I don't really have to pay attention to their opinions." She also addressed rumours that she has struggled with her weight and considered becoming an ambassador for weight loss giant Jenny Craig, saying: (more)...

Kate Bracks has revealed that she doesn't want to be a chef. The 36-year-old mother from Orange in New South Wales, who was recently crowned Australia's MasterChef 2011, said that all she wants to do is run a sleepy B&B in her hometown because the idea of writing a cookbook terrifies her. Bracks told Woman's Day magazine: "I have an underlying dream of owning a bed-and-breakfast. I look at what [past winners] Adam Liaw and Julie Goodwin have done before me and I know plans change, so I'm open to whatever is coming, but still, deep down, is the desire to own a B&B.
