Maw was born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England in February 1997
to parents, Richard and Claire. He attended Gladstone Road Juniors and
Graham Science and Arts College in the town.
His major breakthrough was CBBC's drama Tracy Beaker Returns in 2009.
He has played the role of "Johnny" in Tracy Beaker Returns since age 12. The CBBC drama has won several awards including both BAFTA and RTS awards for best children's drama. A brand new spin-off series called The Dumping Ground succeeded the show in 2012.
Maw has also filmed the guest lead role in two episodes of BBC's "Doctors" in 2012 and 2014.
He has played the lead role in several short films for the director, Ron Wright. Joe was cast for "Fawn" by Nicci Topping and was invited by the same director to star in "Eldon Hole" and "Eighth Day".
