Lifetime Expands ‘Ripped From The Headlines’ Slate with Five Movies Inspired by Ann Rule (Exclusive)
Lifetime has greenlit five new movies for its “Ripped from the Headlines” slate, all from best-selling true crime author Ann Rule, Variety has learned exclusively. Additionally, Ashley Williams and Robin Givens will make their small-screen directorial debuts with two of these films.
These five films come from Rule’s books “Danger in the Dorm,” “Mortan Danger,” “Practice to Deceive,” “Bitter Harvest” and “Empty Promises” and are being prepped for a summer launch. As part of Lifetime’s Broader Focus Initiative, four out of the five directors of these films are women, and three out of the five films were written by women.
“Bitter Harvest” tells the story of a brilliant doctor and mother who had the epitome of a picture perfect life with three children, an adoring husband and a beautiful house in an opulent neighborhood — but behind the curtain was a rocky marriage that takes a terrible turn and leaves her family in ruin.

Every which way you turn with horror films, there is a mountain of scumbags just waiting there, dying to confront you. The word scumbag is associated with a certain amount of sleaze and diabolical doings. Jason from the Friday 13th franchise may kill lots of people but I wouldn’t necessarily call him a scum bag – he is more of a psychopathic mad man. Ditto Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise.
Scumbags are perverted, they thrive on filth and diabolical deeds, they will use people for their own corrupt agendas and they have blatant disregard for anyone who crosses their path. Charming one moment and sadistic the next, they slowly but surely get under our skin by their wicked ways.
I have singled out nine particular slime-balls to raise your heckles. Chime in below with your own choice scumbags…

Lifetime's 'Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret': 'She was deeply in love,' says director Jace Alexander
There was once a time that weeks or months or even years would pass between an incident and the movie made about it. But in a modern TV world of instant gratification, apparently now a story can be put on film before its climax has even happened in real life.
On May 8, a jury in Maricopa County, Ariz., returned a verdict of guilty on the charge of first-degree murder in the case of 32-year-old Californian Jodi Arias, a high-school dropout who pursued photography while working at a restaurant and in sales at PrePaid Legal Services.
On Saturday, June 22, Lifetime airs "Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret," a TV movie inspired by the case, which was in production during the latter phases of the trial. Tania Raymonde ("Lost," "Death Valley") stars as Arias, with Jesse Lee Soffer ("The Mob Doctor") as the victim, Travis Alexander.

Phoenix — A made-for-television movie on Jodi Arias is scheduled to air this weekend.
"Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret" is set to be shown Saturday on Lifetime, but the movie won't be about the trial.
Screenwriter Richard Blaney wrote the script with Gregory Small. Blaney told The Arizona Republic ( ) the project was in the works more than a year ago. He says they completed the script in December. http://bit.ly/19NmBq4
That was the same month that Arias' televised trial started in the brutal 2008 slaying of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, a Mesa motivational speaker.
Small says they didn't anticipate the trial getting as much attention as it did.
A jury convicted Arias of first-degree murder in May but couldn't reach a decision on whether she should live or die.

Here's the thing ... when you meet someone in your life that allows you to come out of your shell to really start living, hold on to them and never let them go. Unless of course they turn out to be a nefarious psychopath. That kind of shit never works out.
Deadline is reporting that Nu Image/Millennium has acquired Playing Dirty, a spec script written by Richard Blaney and Gregory Small. Mandalay Pictures’ Cathy Schulman and Adam Stone will produce, and they closed the deal with Millennium’s Mark Gill.

You have your name on a huge festival hit, and any creative move you make — no matter how small it may be — gets documented and reported. That’s only fair, right? On that note, Deadline informs us that Beasts of the Southern Wild co-writer Lucy Alibar has sold a new script to Escape Artists — which, though said to be an original idea, found root in her play Christmas and Jubilee Behold the Meteor Shower. Some quick Googling around brings no results as to what the project may be about, unfortunately, but we’ll find out in good time.
Some more substantial screenplay news also comes from Deadline, who report that Nu Image/Millennium are getting into the business of Playing Dirty, a spec script crafted by Richard Blaney and Gregory Small. The basic logline gives the immediate, obvious hint that we’ve got a thriller on our hands, since the...

Not a lot of details are known, but apparently The Twilight Saga's Kristen Stewart is eying her next project - Someone in the Dark, a teen thriller to be directed by Carlos Brooks for DreamWorks.
The news came in the form of a tweet from Production Weekly that simply said, Kristen Stewart mentioned for the role of Talia in the thriller “Someone In the Dark” plans are to film in March after "Breaking Dawn" wraps.
Brooks is riding high on mostly positive reviews (including ours here) for his "man-eating tiger trapped in a house with a couple of kids during a hurricane" Burning Bright. The script for Someone in the Dark was penned by Richard Blaney and Gregory Small with Brooks also signed on as Executive Producer.
As we said, not a lot to go on, but considering Stewart's bankability, we expect to hear lots more if she does indeed join the project.
