Variety and Rolling Stone will co-host their first-ever Criminal Justice Reform Summit next month in Los Angeles.

Featuring CNN host and activist Van Jones, as well as Kim Kardashian West and hip-hop artist Meek Mill, the Nov. 14 event will bring together the entertainment, philanthropic, advocacy and policymaking communities to drive criminal justice reform.

Jones will keynote the conference by talking about the failings of the American criminal justice system with Kardashian West, who recently began leveraging her celebrity platform to advocate for prison reform with D.C.’s top policymakers. Notably, she aided in the early release of Alice Marie Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender who spent 21 years in prison, after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.

Newsweek took down a story reporting the execution of Oklahoma prisoner Richard Glossip on Thursday after the governor of the state halted the execution. The story led with the headline, “On Third Attempt, Oklahoma Executes Richard Glossip,” and reported he’d been executed by lethal injection. Soon after, Newsweek followed up with a new story that reported Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin had issued a 37-day stay of execution for Glossip. Oklahoma prison officials halted an inmate's execution after a new drug combination left the man writhing and clenching his teeth on the gurney. He later died of a heart attack. On Tuesday night, Oklahoma State Penitentiary inmate Clayton Lockett was scheduled for an execution that ultimately lasted over 40 minutes in which he writhed and groaned. He eventually died of a heart attack in the execution chamber after officials moved to halt the procedure.

Death Row Inmate's Execution Botched

Lockett, 38, had been on death row for raping a 19-year-old girl, shooting her and then ordering a friend to bury her alive. He and another inmate, Charles Warner, were both scheduled to die on April 29 in what was to be Oklahoma’s first double-execution since 1937. Charles Warner had been found guilty of raping and murdering an 11-month-old, but has maintained his innocence.
