Production is underway on the AI thriller Serena, and Deadline reports that a sinister chatbot in the story is being played by Andi Matichak, who is best known for playing the role of Allyson Nelson, the granddaughter of Laurie Strode, in the recent trilogy of Halloween sequels from Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green.
Directed by Rob Alicea, who is making his feature debut, from a script written by Jonathan Benecke and P.T. Hylton, Serena has the following synopsis: Desperate to launch her company into the future with resounding success, a CEO commissions tech engineer Holly to build her an AI model. However, before being implemented it must be tested. Down-on-his-luck and funds, former rock star, Chris Sadowsky, is asked to be one of the testers — with devastating repercussions. TV shows are supposed to develop as their seasons progress, as the original format of a series might not always fit. In some cases, when a TV show's premise stops working quickly, this opens the door for the writers to experiment with more fantastical and outlandish narratives, leaving behind the story that was once so rooted in reality. While this can sometimes be the perfect thing and keep a show on the air for longer, it can also come out of nowhere and give the TV series a reputation for jumping the shark, making audiences take it less seriously.
Many long-running TV shows never changed their original premise, but this is the exception, not the rule. It's more likely that a series will grow and evolve throughout its run, finding new formulas and settings that the characters flourish in and that audiences respond to. There's nothing wrong with magical elements and heightened reality,...

After the first chapter ended with a shocking twist theres intense demand for The Other Black GIrl season 2, but Hulu has opted to cancel the series after only one season. Adapted from the Zakiya Dalila Harris novel of the same name, Hulus The Other Black Girl focuses on editorial assistant Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniels), the only Black employee at publishers Wagner Books. When Hazel-May McCall (Ashleigh Murray) is hired, Nella is no longer alone at Wagner but Nellas initial kinship with Hazel-May quickly takes a dramatic turn.
Nella suspects Hazel-May might be sabotaging her to advance her career. However, it becomes clear The Other Black Girl isnt just about workplace tension and marginalization. There are shady dealings afoot at Wagner, and the publisher has a disturbing history. The shocking finale to season 1 revealed that Hazel-May's behavior is because of her part in a secret society focused on forcing Black women to assimilate into white culture.

When Hulu and Oynx Collective’s “The Other Black Girl” hit the airwaves, audiences weren’t ready for the cornucopia of hairstyling about to infiltrate their screens. How women of color have their hair styled is a direct reflection of their identity. And that was just as important to the leading ladies on the show.
The show stars Sinclair Daniel as Nella, an editorial assistant, who after being the only Black girl at her company, grows excited when she learns a new Black girl named Hazel (Ashleigh Murray) has been hired. But as Hazel’s star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the Wagner Books.

The Other Black Girl will not return.
Hulu has canceled the comedy series based on the book of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris after a single season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
First put in development in April 2020 before Tara Duncan signed on to serve as president of Disney’s Bipoc-focused studio Onyx Collective, the 10-episode satirical comedy about the publishing world dropped its full season in September to impressive reviews. The series currently has an 86 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences seem to have rejected The Other Black Girl with that score sitting at a lackluster 50 percent among viewers.
Danielle Henderson (Sorry for Your Loss) originally was set to serve as showrunner but was ultimately replaced by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey. Exec producers on the series included Onyx’s Duncan, Rashida Jones, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, Adam Fishbach and author Harris.

Before making your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress, take a tour of our photo gallery that highlights the leading contenders. Currently in the frontrunner position is Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), who has yet to even be nominated for an acting Emmy at this point in her 55-year career.
Foster would be the first actress to receive an Emmy mention for “True Detective,” which has produced four seasons over the past decade. Its previous three acting notices went to inaugural season costars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (who competed for Best Drama Actor in 2014) and third season lead Mahershala Ali (2019).
Hoping to soon achieve second wins in this category are Claire Danes (“Full Circle”; formerly of “Temple Grandin”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”; “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare of Easttown”), Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”; “Game Change”), and Nicole Kidman (“Expats”; “Big Little Lies”). Also in the...

"The Other Black Girl," Hulu's new series based on the best-selling novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris, is an important addition to the streamer's arsenal as a show that centers on the hostile environments that Black women can face in the workplace. It's a near-universal experience for many Black women and is finally being represented on screen.
But when the show takes a turn and reveals the main villain to be another Black woman perpetuating violence against her own community, the show falls short, creating a world where Black women are pitted against each other. As a Black woman who has often been the "only" in workplace settings, the experiences that Nella (played by Sinclair Daniel) goes through at Wagner Publishing resonated. But, unlike Nella, I always had Black colleagues to lift me up, not keep me down.
I have always found that the Black women I worked with had my back.

The Other Black Girl season 2 is highly anticipated due to its shocking twist and the intriguing storyline surrounding workplace tension and a secret society. The producers hope to explore Nella's fake persona and her willingness to go far to achieve her goals in season 2. While season 2 hasn't been officially renewed yet, based on the positive reception of season 1, there seems to be little reason for Hulu not to greenlight it. A potential release date could be in late 2024 or 2025 due to ongoing strikes.

Spoilers for The Other Black Girl season 1 and the novel ahead.
The Hulu series adaptation of "The Other Black Girl" successfully balances satire and thriller elements, providing a more satisfying reveal and finale compared to the novel. The TV series explores Nella's backstory and the nuanced moments of her character, although it cuts down on backstory details to focus on the plot and give more screen time to the character of Hazel. The show reflects a post-pandemic world and the heightened awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, highlighting the shallow sensibilities of Nella's white co-workers in a more recent context.

Zakiya Dalila Harris rarely saw another natural-haired Black woman in the office. But one time it did. She was an assistant editor at Knopf Doubleday, a publishing group within Penguin Random House, and a woman stepped into the bathroom. Instead of a serendipitous smile, though, Harris received the cold shoulder from her colleague.

The Emmy-winning drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon returned this week for its 10-episode third season, which picks up two years after the events of the Season 2 finale. Naturally, this means big changes are happening, not just at the fictional network within the show, which is struggling after launching a streaming service right as the pandemic hit the U.S. (the series loves its “ripped-from-the-headlines” approach to storytelling), but for the actual show as well. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for Season 1 of “The Other Black Girl,” now streaming on Hulu.
“How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to succeed?” That’s the question showrunners Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey were seeking to answer when they adapted Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel “The Other Black Girl” for TV with executive producer Rashida Jones.

Being the only Black person in an aggressively white workspace can be an alienating experience, made less lonely by the welcomed presence of another just like them.
But what happens when you’re unsure if you can trust this would-be ally? That uneasy feeling — and so much more! — is explored in the Hulu thriller The Other Black Girl, which released all 10 episodes of Season 1 on Wednesday.

Can one small thing address systemic racism in the workplace? Probably not, but The Other Black Girl presents a unique idea woven into a tale of anxiety and dread. Adapted from a book of the same title that was released as recently as 2021, The Other Black Girl sets out to be a workplace thriller that follows a young black woman in the publishing industry. In reality, it plays out more like a satire than a thriller, and the nail-biting stuff is far more limited in comparison to the relentless workplace humor. I found the first half of the show especially captivating. The pacing is great, and there’s an element of mystery, but at the same time, there’s also a lot of fun stuff, like getting to know our main character, Nella, who is quite delightful.

Every minority in the good old U.S. of A has heard or internalized that damaging myth: There can only be one. One model minority, one diverse member of the team (or cast) — and in Hulu’s “The Other Black Girl,” one editorial star at Wagner Books, as long as she falls in line. The 10-episode thriller (available all at once) is a faithful and gripping adaptation that will leave viewers exhilarated, entertained, and wanting more — especially from star Sinclair Daniel.
Based on the New York Times bestseller by Zakiya Dalila Harris, “The Other Black Girl” centers on Nella (Daniel), a rising editorial assistant whose world gets rocked in good and bad ways (and some in between) with the arrival of — you guessed it — a second Black girl in her workplace. “The Other Black Girl” is a rarity for Black women in scripted television. The latest series from Onyx Collective to premiere on Hulu, this psychological thriller and satire tinged with horror offers a rare and provocative look into the challenges facing Black women within the larger white society, while also exploring their internal tensions through a mainstream premise.
Adapted from the 2021 book of the same name from Zakiya Dalila Harris, the show centers two Black women working in book publishing, widely acknowledged as one of the least diverse industries in the country. Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel) is a promising young employee at Wagner Books, with eyes on becoming an impactful editor like her idol Kendra Rae Phillips, the publisher’s first and only Black editor to date, did back in the early 1980s. Across much of corporate America, it’s taken almost for granted that things have been “getting better” for racial minorities: that there are more Black voices in positions of influence than there ever have been; that diversity and inclusivity are more prized than ever; that every generation of trailblazers and role models begets the next; that no matter how unjust things remain, they’re still better than they were three or four decades ago. And sure, some of it might even be true.
But there’s a special frustration to being told all this when you can see with your own eyes that it isn’t always the way things are, to being instructed to just wait your turn, to gritting your teeth in the meantime. Hulu’s The Other Black Girl, set largely in the lily-white territory of book publishing, taps into that tension with every genre in its...

You won’t know whether to laugh or scream — it’s Ok to do both — during The Other Black Girl, Hulu‘s sensational comic thriller, adapted from Zakiya Dalila Harris’ buzzy bestseller. A tonal rollercoaster, the series unfolds over 10 blissfully brisk half-hour chapters that keep a binge from feeling like a slog, as the series morphs from a Devil Wears Prada-style workplace satire into an audacious, radically charged twist on The Stepford Wives weirdness. Just try not to cringe when a mentor tells Nella (the endearingly eager Sinclair Daniel), an ambitious editorial assistant at New York’s very white Wagner Books publishing house, “You just need a little polish.” She has already endured so many patronizing micro-aggressions as Wagner’s sole Black employee, doing the bidding of her unctuous boss and almost never feeling seen or heard, that you share Nella’s delight when the chipper, hip Hazel (Ashleigh Murray...

Literary legend Toni Morrison once called racism a distraction. “It keeps you from doing your work,” she said during a 1975 speech. “It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being.” Black people must contend with everything from blatant acts of racist terrorism to small microaggressions that filter into our everyday lives. Instead of existing, you find yourself in a state of constant emotional regulation and survival, one that is exhaustingly unfair and unsustainable. For people of color and Black folks navigating predominantly white spaces, this constant state of code-switching and performance can quickly become horrific and soul-sucking.

When The Other Black Girl hit bookshelves June 1, 2021, it was already a phenomenon. The manuscript went through a 14-way auction, eventually landing at Atria for a seven-figure deal — and an adaptation was already in the works at Hulu after a similarly competitive bidding war. The novel became an instant New York Times best-seller.
Zakiya Dalila Harris wrote the thriller (her first) from her own experience as one of two Black people on her floor of the Penguin Random House offices, where she worked as an assistant editor. The book’s protagonist, Nella, is drawn to new hire Hazel in hopes they can bond over racism at the fictional Wagner Books before realizing that Hazel has sinister intentions.
Harris took a break from writing her next novel to speak with THR about what it’s been like to work on the adaptation — which premieres Sept. 13 on Hulu and counts Rashida Jones as an executive producer.

This September is a relatively slow month for TV and movies but it’s far from a dead month (unless you count a new Walking Dead spinoff). The small screen sees the debut of new seasons of The Morning Show and Wheel of Time while the big screen features more sequels than we can cover here. (Fans of The Nun should know that The Nun 2 makes its debut on September 8.) Beyond the familiar, you’ll find a series starring Lakeith Stanfield, a dramatization of a weird chapter in recent financial history,...

This article contains spoilers for the Riverdale series finale.
Riverdale season 7 gave our characters a fresh slate in the 1950’s, embracing their “classic Archie Comics counterparts.” However, in the penultimate episode, they all finally got their good memories back from Angel Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) with only Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) choosing to remember both the good and bad.
With all of the absurd storylines that have taken place throughout the seasons, including time travel, it makes sense to say goodbye to Riverdale as the town that was once lost in time with one last epic journey. Whether you’re satisfied with where your favorite characters end up, one thing is for sure, you’re going to need tissues. Here’s what really went down in the show’s finale.

Then as Hazel begins to rise in the ranks, Nella discovers something sinister is going on at the company... Sinclair Daniel stars as Nella, and Ashleigh Murray as Hazel. Vulture says the story "takes on the terrifying world of tokenization, racism, and attempting career advancements in a white industry." The Other Black Girl is poised to be one of the most talked-about shows of the year.
Hulu dropped the official trailer for its adaptation of Zakiya Dalila Harris' best-selling novel on Wednesday, and it's as unsettling as expected.
"Nella, an editorial assistant, is tired of being the only Black girl at her company, so she's excited when Hazel is hired," the logline reads.
"But as Hazel's star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the company."
It's a compelling description, and the trailer nails what the above describes, so that's a good thing.
Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Hunter Parrish, Bellamy Young, Eric McCormack, and Garcelle Beauvais star.
The Other Black Girl is executive produced by Rashida Jones, Adam Fishbach, Zakiya Dalila Harris, Jordan Reddout, Gus Hickey, Tara Duncan, and Temple Hill's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

Hulu released the trailer Wednesday for “The Other Black Girl,” adapted from the best-selling novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris.
The series will follow Nella (Sinclair Daniels) who joyfully leaves her loneliness behind as the only Black employee at a publishing company, Wagner Books, when Hazel (Ashleigh Murray) gets hired as an editorial assistant like Nella.
Suddenly, all of Vera’s (Bellamy Young) demands become less grueling when she can share the experience of being Black at a majority white-staffed company with Hazel — until things get weird.
“Wagner’s just … you’ll see,” Nella tells Hazel at first in the trailer you can watch above.
Right as Vera tells Nella that she is ready to recommend a promotion to assistant editor from editorial assistant for Nella, some sinister things start happening that only Nella feels like she is aware of.

Showtime has announced the release date of their upcoming limited series “Fellow Travelers,” starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey. The eight-episode drama will premiere on Oct. 27.
Created by Academy Award nominee Ron Nyswaner and based on Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name, “Fellow Travelers” is both a romance and a political thriller, depicting the secret relationship between two men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, a man with a lucrative behind-the-scenes job in politics, and Bailey plays an idealistic, religious young man. Their romance begins at the same time that Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants.” The show tracks the protagonists over four decades, through the Vietnam War protests, the drugs and disco of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Netflix's original comedy movies offer a wide variety of genres and themes, from off-beat anthologies to romantic comedies to family-friendly films. There is something for everyone. The streaming service has successfully mixed smaller low budget movies with high-budget films, providing a range of options for viewers. While not all comedies will appeal to every subscriber, Netflix's original comedy movies showcase both little-known actors and big-name stars, making for a diverse and impressive lineup.
The best Netflix original comedy movies run the gamut from off-beat anthologies to romantic comedies to those aimed at children. A familiar face is back in the Riverdale universe on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 17.
Josie McCoy, leader of Josie and The Pussycats, unveiled her 1955 counterpart in true Hollywood fashion. In this case, she's an award-winning Hollywood and Broadway star.
Her arrival to town was filled with big screens and big stage performances. But was the episode a grand return to form?
"Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Four: A Different Kind of Cat" was an enjoyable chapter that hit Riverdale 1955's campy flair. However, not much has changed in the trend of Riverdale Season 7.
Plenty of flash and fun references for the time, but there was no concrete or consistent plot tying everything together.
For instance, Josie's arrival in Riverdale for her movie project. It's another standalone story that breaks up any potential for an overarching plot.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie, return and get her screen time.

"Back in present day and longing for her former life in Riverdale, 86-year-old Betty (Lili Reinhart) turns to a special friend to help her relive her last day of senior year with her friends as they were, their memories restored," is the short, sweet, and mind-numbing description.
Does it get any more series finale-like than this, Riverdale Fanatics?

The Riverdale gang will return to present-day in this month’s series finale… but maybe not in the way we expected.

Despite Katy Keene's cancellation, Josie achieved success as a singer and returned to Riverdale due to her father's passing, reuniting temporarily with Josie and the Pussycats and continuing her world tour. Now, her story takes an interesting turn in the 1950s timeline.
