He graduated from St. John's University with a degree in business administration and received an MBA from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. He served as the U.S. deputy assistant postmaster general, then joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a development director. He left to become president of the American Trucking Association and returned to the Chamber as president 13 years later.
