Are you ready?
“The Rehearsal” Season 2 will debut on HBO and Max on April 20. The network also released a teaser trailer for Nathan Fielder’s surreal and twisted dark comedy series, which helps real people prepare for life’s biggest moments through freakishly high-budget simulations.
In the 20-second clip, Fielder, reprising his laptop harness from Season 1, oversees the dressing of a set — five identical rooms replicated in some warehouse. Per HBO, in Season 2 of the series, “the urgency of Fielder’s project grows as he decides to put his resources toward an issue that affects us all.”
In Season 1 of “The Rehearsal,” Fielder helps a man admit to his trivia team that he has, for years, been lying about having a master’s degree. To rehearse for the confession, Fielder constructed an exact replica of a Brooklyn bar and hired actors to play the man’s friends. The season took...

Perhaps that critically acclaimed first season was in fact just the “rehearsal” for the long-awaited Season 2…
Nathan Fielder’s viral HBO comedy series “The Rehearsal” returns for its second season three years after the series debuted in 2022. The show was almost immediately renewed, and Season 2 was teased in 2024 as part of the HBO slate for this year.
The six-episode second season continues creator/star Fielder’s quest to aide others in milestone moments. The series “follows one man’s journey to reduce the uncertainties of everyday life. Among the most clever things about Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal is that its very structure, along with the secrecy behind how Fielder and company produced the docu-comedy, makes it almost entirely analysis-proof. We just know so little about which parts are real, which parts are not, what happened that we did not see, and how much more empathetic Fielder may be than the version of himself he plays here (and before that,...

It’s been a busy 48 hours for Netflix: The streaming service has acquired the rights to Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s “Ball and Chain” superhero film, Eric Andre’s “Bad Trip” movie and “Legalize Everything” stand-up special, and reportedly acquired the Mark Wahlberg-produced “Our Man From Jersey” in a seven-figure deal.
Deadline reports that the lattermost project, a “blue-collar 007” that will be scripted by David Guggenheim, will be produced by Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, the duo whose recently-released “Spenser Confidential” was viewed by 85 million Netflix subscribers. The duo has been virtually meeting with writers but other details about the project, including a prospective release date, are under wraps.

Buffaloed (Tanya Wexler)
Set in the rough and tumble world of South Buffalo–the streets that raised tough guys like the crude former New York State gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino–Buffaloed is a surprisingly fun comedy about the rise and fall of an up-and-coming hustler, gleefully played with a thick (and accurate) Western New York accent by Zoey Deutch. Deutch’s Peg Dahl aspires to not be another house-wife raising her kids on five-cent wings and starts running minor cons in high school until selling bootleg Buffalo Bills tickets lands her in prison. – John F. If Fight Club taught us one thing and one thing only it is to never underestimate the power of a bored single man with nothing to lose. Tim Heidecker is running for District Attorney of San Bernadino, California. Or, to put it in a slightly more accurate way: “Tim Heidecker” is “running” for “District Attorney” of the small SoCal town. You don’t need to have watched the comedian’s groundbreaking, brain-grinding sketch series with Eric Wareheim, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, to sense that there are a lot of air quotes in the premise of Mister America. There’s an acquired taste to the comedy of Tim Heidecker. The actor and comedian, primarily known for his work on the Adult Swim program Tim and Eric Awesome Show, has also ventured into films with efforts such as The Comedy. To call these items divisive would be an understatement. Now, this week brings a new work of his in Mister America, one that’s perhaps less bizarre than his other works, though no less strange. Unfortunately, while it may, on the surface, seem like his most accessible flick, it’s also his most toothless. Despite a committed effort on his part, very little clicks here. The movie is a mockumentary, poking fun at the political process, as well as certain modern day candidates. “Tim Heidecker” (played by Heidecker) is a slightly fictionalized version of the man, here a concert promoter, after beating a murder rap for selling lethal e-cigarettes...

It’s hard to define exactly what actor/comedian/musician Tim Heidecker does — the deliberate result of a Dead Sea-dry sense of humor that can make even his most committed supporters feel like they’re not always in on the joke — but if anything binds his various projects together it might be a consistent effort to explore the value of absurdity in an increasingly absurd world. You can see it in “The Comedy,” a semi-improvised satire in which Heidecker gave one of the decade’s great performances as a trust fund man-child who gets unmoored between irony and entropy. You can hear it on albums like “Too Dumb for Suicide: Tim Heidecker’s Trump Songs,” in which he mocks our reality TV president in order to grapple with the futility of mocking our reality TV president.

You’ll be forgiven for not realizing one of this decade’s most enveloping, complex, haunting, and haunted performances exists almost exclusively on a bite-sized Adult Swim series. Stepping inside the labyrinthine world of On Cinema, however, reveals Gregg Turkington’s work as… Gregg Turkington, a film-obsessive psychotic whose passions veer almost exclusively towards the least-useful American studio movies of the last 30-or-so years. There is no sense of what is happening with him outside a movie-theater seat, save the occasional, overwhelmingly dire peek into what’s done to fuel his passions. Otherwise, On Cinema‘s resident film expert is wont to grant each week’s big releases five bags of popcorn (their highest rating) and dwell on “Popcorn Classics,” about which he has little to say except a factoid concerning its cast member and the runtime. If the On Cinema universe already sounds exhausting, good news: there are ten complete seasons,...

What is it about the complete lack of faith in the government and the consistent empowerment of white supremacists that tickles so many so-called liberal filmmakers? Last year it was director Adam McKay’s “Vice,” and now it’s “Mister America,” director Eric Notarnicola’s uncomfortable mockumentary presumably meant to parody modern political decay.
But because it is filmed like a documentary, with an uncomfortably convincing central performance by actor and co-writer Tim Heidecker, it almost does seem like a completely unqualified Tim really is running for San Bernardino district attorney. In today’s political climate, where a man was elected president of the United States just weeks after being accused of sexual harassment, it wouldn’t be unbelievable to watch a similarly unfit white guy, who also narrowly escaped criminal prosecution, confidently run for major office.

If you are of voting age in the United States today, you know that stranger things have happened than someone like Tim Heidecker getting elected to public office. But in a world where Americans are getting punked on an almost daily basis by their TV-famous cretin in chief, do we really need a smug fake-news “documentary” making a mockery of the political system?
Maybe that’s too literal an assessment of “Mister America,” the latest oddball installment in the long-running performance-art curiosity that is “On Cinema at the Cinema,” in which a character named Tim Heidecker (played by absurdist comedian/outsider artist Tim Heidecker) pretends to run for district attorney of San Bernardino, Calif. Introduction, Or "Hey Guys"Tim Heidecker (left) and Gregg Turkington (right) in On the Cinema at the Cinema. The On Cinema universe is probably among the most unique art projects of this decade, and its creators Tim Heidecker, Gregg Turkington, and Eric Notarnicola have made it an expansive experience that feels part performance-art, part film, part alternative reality game, part film criticism. The various series, events, tweets, music, and now a movie under the On Cinema brand have chronicled the turn of American society from the quiet yet controversial late years of the second Obama period, to the outrageousness of the present, seemingly alt-right directed, reality as commanded by the possibly impeachable Donald Trump. And it does it in a way that isn’t entirely satirical as much as it is a direct look at the reality of how awful human beings can be when they’re under the impression that they’re right,...

"I think Tim's running for Da because he just wants to get revenge." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the first trailer for an indie comedy titled Mister America, the latest project from comedian mastermind Tim Heidecker. This mockumentary meets prank film stars Tim Heidecker as Tim Heidecker, a clever man who decides to enter politics and run for the San Bernadino District Attorney. "Fueled by ego and ignorance, he tries to surmount a lack of experience, funds and likeability by personally connecting with unsuspecting constituents." I'm surprised this hasn't played at any other film festivals, because it seems like the perfect thing to premiere at SXSW. It also just seems like an impressively bold attempt to mock American politics while somehow still being entertaining - which is more challenging than you might think these days. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Eric Notarnicola's Mister America, direct from YouTube...

No, it’s not Greta Gerwig’s next film project, but it could be just as transformative for the film industry. Tim Heidecker, one of the brilliantly silly minds behind “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”, is coming out with a new political mockumentary just in time for the 2020 election. “Mister America,” which just released an intriguing first trailer, follows the comedian as he campaigns for San Bernardino District Attorney. Written by Heidecker along with director Eric Notarnicola and Gregg Turkington, “Mister America” looks like just the thing to help you through election fatigue.
The official synopsis reads: “A freshman filmmaker follows Tim Heidecker during the final month of his campaign for district attorney. What begins as a profile of an outsider candidate facing an uphill battle evolves into a study of toxic delusion as Tim’s motivations and controversial past begin to unravel his candidacy. Taking on a...

Ostensibly a parody of know-nothing movie-review culture couched in Tim Heidecker’s inimitable, increasingly prevalent “weirdness,” the long-running On Cinema gradually reveals itself as one of the great contemporary chronicles of obsessiveness, loneliness, greed, idiocy, evil, failure–the pillars of our existence. Were it only as funny as it is, I still wouldn’t be able to wait for Mister America, Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s big-screen transition.
Directed by Eric Notarnicola, it follows Heidecker’s (speaking for his character) campaign for District Attorney of San Bernardino County following his acquittal of nearly 20 murder charges–itself the subject of The Trial, a mini-season that’s one of the most radical adaptations of a different form (here the televised trial) I’ve ever seen a work of fiction take on. (Sample it for even 30 seconds and you’ll get the idea.) Apparently turned from an Adult Swim movie to theatrical release...

Magnolia Pictures has nabbed North American rights to “Mister America,” a feature-length comedy that’s being billed as an extension of the world of “On Cinema,” the cult Adult Swim show.
The film stars “On Cinema” hosts Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington and follows Heidecker’s attempt to enter the world of politics. Eric Notarnicola, who previously oversaw several episodes of the show along with its 2018 Oscar special, directs. Magnolia is eyeing a fall theatrical release.
In the movie, Heidecker beats a murder charge for selling faulty e-cigarettes at an Edm festival, and mounts a campaign to unseat the San Bernardino District Attorney. His effort to win voters tries to overcome a lack of experience and funding by leaning into the candidate’s personal likability. It does not go well.
“We unleashed Tim into the real world to run the worst campaign in modern history, and document the process,” said Notarnicola in a statement.

Jenny Lewis leads a wacky, A-list fundraiser in her new “Red Bull & Hennessy” video, goofing off with Beck, St. Vincent, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Jeff Goldblum, Jason Schwartzman, Haim’s Danielle Haim, Mac DeMarco, Tim Heidecker, Vanessa Bayer, David Arquette and Nikki Lane, among others.
Director Eric Notarnicola (Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!; Nathan For You; Who Is America?) documents Lewis’ February event “On the Line Online — The Three Hour Listening Party & Fundraiser,” which raised over $10,000 for the Los Angeles Downtown Women’s Center. He frames the...

We answer every question you could ever have about Eric Andre Show's strangest character and his new political special.
The Eric Andre Show has often been described as a nightmare version of a talk show. To call the show unconventional or alternative is a massive understatement. The Adult Swim series is a massively surreal deconstruction of the talk show and for years it's been surprising its audience in new ways. Arguably the weirdest character from the exceptionally weird Eric Andre Show is the cheese-centric Kraft Punk, a bizarre, loathed mystery man who can never die.
In a particularly surprising move, Adult Swim announced that Kraft Punk would be getting his own half hour political special wherein his strange style mingles with Washington D.C.'s finest. The results are some of the weirdest and most interesting material to come out of The Eric Andre Show.
