Eis schemes could come back into favour as two producers win significant court cases against tax authorities.
UK funding mechanism Enterprise Investment Scheme (Eis) could re-emerge as a viable tool for low-budget independent film financing following two courtroom victories by film companies against the UK tax authority, Hm Revenue and Customs (Hmrc), which had been trying to clamp down on the practice.
Separate tribunal judges each ruled in favour of Inferno Films Ltd and Cry Me A River Limited, and against Hmrc, in two recent First Tier Tribunal Tax Chamber cases.

[Note: With the film finally getting a home entertainment release, here’s a reposting of our review of The Ballad of Billy McCrae from its UK cinema debut last September]
British gangster or small-town British revenge-style movies are a dime a dozen. There are so many of them around, I assume because they are cheap to make and there’s an abundance of actors who will happily star of them. Because of this, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Directors like Shane Meadows have taken this idea but elevated it to a whole new level, and that’s hard to do. The Ballad of Billy McCrae and its director doesn’t quite do that but there’s still plenty of interest here.
We are introduced to Chris Blythe. A man who has returned to his home town in Wales with his tail between his legs after losing his fortune in Canada.

It’s a safe rule of thumb in cinema that nothing good ever happens in a lighthouse: Boats are steered into calamity, people plunge (or are pushed) to seagull-pecked death on the rocks, and let’s not even start on what happened to poor Alicia Vikander when she married a lighthouse keeper. The fourth feature from Welsh genre journeyman Chris Crow, “The Lighthouse” follows squarely in this glum tradition, building a low-level psychodrama around two sparring guardians of the same rickety wooden beacon as adverse weather drives them into danger, madness and worse.
Based on true, tragic events from the early 19th century that led to a critical change in British lighthouse security practice, Crow’s film is a generally capable but oppressively dour chamber piece, its mounting claustrophobia never quite breaking the full horror sweat it threatens — even as the heavens crash and a hellmouth seemingly opens at its delirious but budgetarily constrained climax.

I love horror films that are set in the past, before mobile phones, internet, even before cars; the more isolated, the better, without the distraction of modern life interrupting what makes us truly afraid. When all you have is other humans and nature and the thin line that separates you from violence and insanity. Such seems to be the case with The Lighthouse, a new feature film directed by Chris Crow (Devil's Bridge, Panic Button) and produced by David Lloyd (Devil's Bridge). Starring Michael Jibson (Les Miserables, The Riot Club) and Mark Lewis Jones (Troy, Master and Commander), it tells the true story of the Smalls Island incident of 1801, off the coast of Wales. Quite macabre, and all the more sinister for being plucked...

Ten film projects, including features from Doctor Who director Euros Lyn and Borrowed Time producer Olivier Kaempfer, have been selected to progress to the first round of the Film Agency for Wales’ low budget film scheme.
The teams behind these projects will now participate in a training and mentoring programme supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, which is funded by the National Lottery via the BFI, and through the Skills Investment Fund (Sif).
The Film Agency for Wales devised and developed Cinematic in partnership with the BFI Film Fund, BBC Films, S4C and Soda Pictures to support emerging filmmaking talent from Wales in making “contemporary, dynamic and distinctive feature films” with budgets of around £300,000 ($480,000).
A total of 56 applications were made to the programme following its launch in June. The ten projects and their filmmaking teams selected to continue with the programme are:

Devil's Bridge is an indie horror film from the United Kingdom. This is director and writer Chris Crow's first major release and Devil's Bridge deals with three blokes on holiday. They leave Essex for Wales, but they might have wanted to avoid one stop in a backwoods country town. Here, a hunter reminds the men who is boss in the Welsh wilderness with threats, stares, gunfire and even stabbings. The guys get the message a little too late. And thus, we have another urban versus rural encroachment theme with elements of Welsh history and territory aggression tied into a fairly predictable thriller.
Sam (Michael Jibson), Danny (Gary Mavers), and Sean (Joseph Millson) are the three men "on the piss." Sean is searching for a family friend who can get him out of his financial troubles. On the way to find this mystery man, they almost...

Panic Button is a United Kingdom shot indie film that was recently released on Blu-Ray, DVD and video-on-demand. Made for under $300K UK pounds Panic Button takes place on a small jet with four distressed characters wanting to get off this doomed flight. Comparable to the Saw franchise, Nine Dead and early parts of Marcus Grave's Choose as there are tough choices here, this film can be a little predictable while also raising some important internet issues e.g. cyber bullying, privacy.
Max (Jack Gordon), Jo (Scarlett Alice Johnson), Dave (Michael Jibson), and Gwen (Elen Rhys) have won the trip of a life time or so they think. A trip to New York City promises excitement while a pixelated alligator also promises SUVs, diamonds and assorted contest winnings. All they have to do is sign the terms...

As Gertrude Stein once said, “Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.”
While Ms. Stein may have passed away in 1946, her sentiments have never been truer than at present. She might as well have been referring to Chris Crow’s 2011 British thriller Panic Button. Panic Button's theme is: too much information equals a lot of bloodshed. By simply viewing dangerous acts, engaging people with ulterior motives, and hacking private accounts, we are all inflicting some kind of violence upon one another. This is exactly what pisses off an animated cartoon alligator when four members of Facebook (I mean, the fictional All2gethr.com) board a private airplane bound for New York City after winning a competition.

As promised in our Event Report from this year's amazing as always Film4 FrightFest film fest in the UK, we're back with a full gallery of photos from the event taken by our man on the scene, Gareth aka Pestilence, along with a quartet of new reviews.

The Glass Man

Directed by Cristian Solimeno
Martin Pyrite has lost his job. But instead of telling his wife, he continues his work routine and gets into enormous monetary difficulties. Then late one night a sinister debt collector bangs on his door with an offer – if Martin helps him carry out an important task, he’ll wipe the financial slate clean.

As the holiest range of dates in the British horror fanatic’s calendar now consigns itself to history, so too do the memories of this year’s Film4 FrightFest (Thursday 25 August to Monday 29 August). Now in its twelfth year of operation, the UK’s premier destination for lovers of all things scary and violent appears to have settled solidly into what will likely be its permanent home for the future – the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square. Did we mention last year that it’s also the largest cinema screen in the UK? We did, you say? Well, it is. And it’s a wonderful thing to behold every single time you enter the auditorium.

Four people win a trip to New York courtesy of a trendy social networking site. What they don’t realize, of course, is that someone is playing a deadly game, and they’re the participants.
