‘Freaky Friday’ Star, 66, Dishes on Working With ‘Severance’s Britt Lower on New Psychological Thriller Movie [Exclusive]
Image
Jamie Lee Curtis has been terrified on-screen by vengeful ghosts, a deranged yuppie, and, of course, a masked maniac. Now, she's orchestrating the terror from behind the camera. She's set to star in and produce the new psychological thriller Sender. She talked about it with Collider's Perri Nemiroff, while promoting her new comedy sequel Freakier Friday. She's enjoying the producing phase of her career, stating, "I like being a boss. I have good ideas." Sender, which will star Severance's Britt Lower, is one of the projects she's producing. What's it about? Curtis explains:

"Britt is the star of the movie, and it's about a brushing scam. It's about what happens to someone when they're caught in a brushing scam. It’s about people who send packages that you never ordered. It's a psychological thriller about a woman who gets sent things. It's called Sender. It's written and directed by Russell Goldman,...

Jamie Lee Curtis Says She’s Been “Self-Retiring” & “Prepping To Get Out” After Watching Her Parents Be “Rejected” By Hollywood As They Aged
Image
Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis opened up about her considerations of retirement and Hollywood’s aging problem in relation to her parents, icons of the industry Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.

In an extensive interview with The Guardian tied to the upcoming Aug. 8 release of Disney’s Freakier Friday, the Halloween actress slammed the entertainment world’s treatment of older actors, particularly women.

“I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age,” she explained. “I watched them reach incredible success and then have it slowly erode to where it was gone. And that’s very painful.”

Because of this, Curtis added, “I have been self-retiring for 30 years. I have been prepping to get out, so that I don’t have to suffer the same as my family did. I want to...

Idiotka Review: Crafting Family Drama in a Reality TV Cage
Nastasya Popov
From the moment Margarita Levlansky leans into the camera—fabric scraps strewn around her like battlefield detritus—we sense a collision between yearning and obligation. Here is a second-generation Russian American, sewing machine barely functional, yet bristling with dreams of fashion glory (and rent checks).

Margarita’s West Hollywood apartment feels less like a home than a pressure cooker: grandmother Gita’s colorful demands, father Samuel’s stoic regret over a prison sentence for health-care fraud, brother Nerses’s quiet solidarity. Into this crucible steps Slay, Serve, Survive, a reality-tv gauntlet that values tear-stained backstories over raw talent. Margarita’s ticket in? A video that showcases family chaos rather than couture prowess.

Nastasya Popov makes her debut here, casting Anna Baryshnikov in her first lead role. Popov’s eye for both absurdity and tenderness sets a tone that alternately pinches you with satire and soothes you with family warmth. There...

"He's Very Funny": Camila Mendes Teases Nicholas Galitzine's Unique Take on He-Man in Live-Action 'Masters of the Universe' [Exclusive]
Image
Camila Mendes stopped by the Collider Media Studio at SXSW earlier this month to promote her new Reality TV satire Idiotka, where she was asked about her next project—the latest live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe. Collider's Perri Nemiroff coaxed a few of the secrets of Grayskull out of Mendes in regard to her co-star, Nicholas Galitzine, who will be playing the iconic toy-box hero He-Man. When asked what makes Galitzine's performance unique, Mendes, who co-stars as He-Man's ally Teela, answered:

"I feel like if I were to tell you that, it would completely give away a huge plot point, but I think it'd be his sense of humor. He's very funny, very talented, and very funny."

Mendes went on to speak about her excitement to join a new superhero universe in its beginning stages as a live-action franchise, saying she's always dreamed of being part of a project like this.

‘Idiotka’ Review: Anna Baryshnikov Shines in a Lead Role and Sews Chaos in Spirited Fashionista Comedy
Image
Writer-director Nastasya Popov finely threads a needle in her debut feature “Idiotka,” dipping into the chaotic life of Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), an aspiring fashion designer with a barely functioning sewing machine in the tight-knit Russian district of West Hollywood. Margarita seems as much a work in progress as the eternally under-construction house she lives in. She’s been making ends meet by attaching tags taken off well-known designer labels onto her own work, then pawning them off online. But the clothes themselves show plenty of personality under the false advertising; accordingly, Popov delivers a boisterous tale of a woman coming into her own, told with real humor and heart.

Like one of Margarita’s dresses, there is at least some repurposed fabric in “Idiotka.” Margarita struggles both with asserting herself in a brutal industry and with stepping out of the shadow of her feisty family, but the comedy is all...

‘Idiotka’ Review: Anna Baryshnikov Competes For The American Dream On A Reality Show In Nastasya Popov’s Directorial Debut — SXSW
Image
Writer-director Nastasya Popov’s feature debut is a hilariously heartfelt reminder that immigrants make America (and cinema) great.

In the earnest comedy-drama Idiotka, Anna Baryshnikov plays Margarita Levlansky, a budding fashion designer living with her grandmother, father and brother in a tiny apartment in West Hollywood, “not the fancy part, the Russian part.”

With her family five months behind on rent, Margarita lands a spot on Slay, Serve, Survive, a new fashion competition series whose producer Nicol (Camila Mendes) takes a shine to her adversity and potential screen presence. But the role requires her to open her life up to the world, baring all her family’s struggle for a shot at the American Dream.

The clever comedy-drama spotlights post-Soviet life in L.A.’s gay capital for Jews who “weren’t considered real Russians or Ukrainians.” It’s a particularly relevant piece of representation amid the ongoing strife with Russia,...

‘Idiotka’ Review: Reality TV Satire and Heartwarming Family Dramedy Collide in a Messy but Winning Directorial Debut
Image
“I would describe my aesthetic as Old World trash and treasure,” says Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), a few minutes into Idiotka. “She’s milking a cow at five, but she needs to be at the ballet at 5:10. Loves a bargain bin.”

As a description of a style, it’s nonsense. As an illustration of an imagined wearer, it’s word salad. And yet there’s something compelling about its quirkiness — which, in its way, makes it a perfect encapsulation of Idiotka. The feature debut by writer-director Nastasya Popov is certainly messy, a mélange of contrasting tones and contradictory ideas. But darned if it isn’t bursting with enough personality to charm you all the same.

For the first act or so, Idiotka presents itself as a sendup of a certain soulless type of content. Margarita’s explaining her look in that very first scene because she’s filming a submission...

‘Idiotka’ Review: A Russian-American Fashionista Bets It All on Reality TV
Image
One of the predominant worries of our age is the desire to live authentically. There’s a profusion of technological developments and variables — now extending to artificial intelligence — that both help and hamstring us from achieving this, with much neurosis and self-consciousness brought on if we can’t. The 2010s and the ongoing Trump era have also intensified the clamor for identity politics, where a sometimes fragile sense of empowerment is gained by asserting difference in the face of mass American conformity.

So, the faux-inspirational outcome is that we must embrace our truth, and “Slay, Serve, and Survive,” to reference the in-film reality show contest in Nastasya Popov’s SXSW premiere “Idiotka.” Premiering in the non-competitive Narrative Spotlight section, Popov’s upbeat and genial comedy capably interrogates these ideas, with its tale of a young, aspiring LA fashion designer (from a Russian emigré background not unlike the director’s own...

Idiotka is an acquisition title out of the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it will premiere Wednesday.

“This project came through a mutual friend that I shared with our producing partner, Tess Cohen, a friend that I knew from high school. It’s very random, but awesome. It gripped me,” Mendes told Deadline of the film ahead of its premiere Wednesday. “I called my producing partner right away, Rachel Matthews, and I was like, we gotta do this. She’s like, ‘Babe, I’m with you. I just read the first two pages and I’m in.

10 Best Historical Fantasy TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Fantasy shows often introduce audiences to amazing fictional worlds, and while these are great, sometimes a fantasy series set in a historical period inside our very own reality is even better. This is what is known as a historical fantasy series. While it is definitely intriguing to be thrown into a world unique from our own, and forced to understand new mechanics and types of magic, some truly outstanding fantasy series don't need to go that far. By putting a spin on a time period viewers have studied in school, the best fantasy shows make magic out of the ordinary.

The best historical fantasy shows are those which use equal parts history and equal parts fantasy. It would be easy for a show to use their historical background as nothing more than that: a background. However, the greatest historical series use their time period to their advantage, creating a vivid...

The crime thriller's plot follows a romance between a reclusive gym manager and a bodybuilder, culminating in a wild and violent climax. With engaging performances from Stewart and Katy O'Brian and an intense narrative, Love Lies Bleeding is a must-watch film.

Directed and co-written by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding boasts a truly top-notch cast. In Kristen Stewart's action thriller with 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Oscar-nominated actor plays Lou, a reclusive gym manager living in New Mexico. Set in 1989, Love Lies Bleeding straddles several genres. At its core, the film is a neo-noir crime thriller, but it's also a romance with dark comedy elements. Zosia Mamet's The Decameron Is A Reminder To Watch Her In Another Hilarious Period Comedy
Image
Zosia Mamet shines in Netflix's raunchy comedy, The Decameron, despite the show's mixed reviews. Before The Decameron, Mamet guest starred in Dickinson, putting forth a hilarious take on Little Women novelist Louisa May Alcott. Mamet's role in Dickinson, another period comedy, prepared her for The Decameron.

Zosia Mamet's role in The Decameron isn't her first time nailing the absurdity of a period comedy, as the actor notably guest starred in Apple TV+'s masterful Dickinson. Still, Mamet takes her comedic abilities to new heights in her latest project. Dubbed Netflix's "new Bridgerton," The Decameron actually couldn't be further from Shonda Rhimes' well-mannered period romance. Instead, the adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 14th-century collection of short stories aims to be a raunchy comedy set during the 1300s. However, so far the response to the eight-episode medieval black comedy has been mixed.

The history of The Decameron book is just as...

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brien, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Ed Harris, Dave Franco | Written and Directed by Rose Glass

Lou (Kristen Stewart) lives a remotely modest life, working as a gym manager in a small town in New Mexico. She soon meets Jackie (Katy O’Brien), an ambitious bodybuilder with dreams of competing in Las Vegas. As the two grow closer, Lou’s family dynamics take over their lives, leading to disastrous consequences.

Let’s begin by stating the obvious — Rose Glass’ work in Love Lies Bleeding has changed the lesbian canon of cinema forever. Even in 2024, a shrewd, meaningful sapphic movie that doesn’t try to be sexual for the sake of pleasure is terribly hard to come by, with golden nuggets such as Carol and Disobedience passing muster. While these often-tragic love stories are all well and good, Glass has doubled down on her unique offerings by incorporating genre and nuanced scope,...

Love Lies Bleeding doesn't just feature an all-star cast and expert direction. It also boasts unbelievable twists and shocking scenes that leave the audience on the edge of their seats. New to Streaming: Marianne, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Flipside, Thelma & More

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

The Dead Don’t Hurt (Viggo Mortensen)

Though The Dead Don’t Hurt gradually becomes Vivienne’s story as Holger disappears to fight, his presence still defines the film in strange ways. While Mortensen certainly looks younger than 65 and I’m not one of those people who busts out a calculator to determine what is or isn’t an appropriate age-gap relationship, Mortensen casting himself opposite Krieps in the romantic (even action hero) lead role he’s clearly too old for (beyond maybe financing requirements) reeks of ego. Maybe this wouldn’t matter as much if he dramatized these proceedings in a way more compelling than just its interesting conceptual ideas of immigrants in the west going through the passage of time together.

Artificial Intelligence Takes Spotlight at Bucheon Fantasy Film Festival With Conference, Dedicated AI Competition
Image
Leading Korean actor Son Ye-jin received a huge roar of applause as she greeted fans and rounded off the Thursday red-carpet ceremony at the opening of Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan). The star of “A Moment to Remember” and “April Snow,” Son is the subject of the festival’s retrospective section.

But even as the festival takes a well-deserved, if conventional, look back at Son’s 23-year career, the event’s larger focus this year is the direction that artificial intelligence (AI) is taking the film industry.

“The main issue of this year’s Bifan is Bifan+ AI. Generative AI can be used as an innovative and revolutionary tool to meet the world with one’s talent through minimal expenses. I believe that with the help of generative AI an era of equal competition will come, in which imagination, not the size of budget, is the most important factor,...

Love Lies Bleeding is coming to digital next week
Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian in Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
Rose Glass’ sophomore feature Love Lies Bleeding will be available on digital next week. More details below.

It’s the British filmmaker’s second film, following on the heels of the immensely disturbing but stunningly-made horror character study, Saint Maud. The film follows a body builder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) and gym manager Lou (Kristen Stewart) whose whirlwind romance...

Kerry Washington and Patty Jenkins Call for More Diverse Voices in Filmmaking: ‘We Belong in the Room’

Kerry Washington no longer plays the fictional Olivia Pope on “Scandal,” but she still suits up like a gladiator when it comes to expressing her opinions about Washington, D.C. and Hollywood.

The actress, producer, and director told Variety on the red carpet at the annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program luncheon that she is “sometimes reluctant” to tell people who they should support in politics, but she does believe in ‘”voting up and down the ballot for candidates that really support humanity and inclusivity.”

“I am voting for Biden, but part of the reason why I am is because it’s so important for us to hold our elected officials accountable,” she revealed during the event. “And I’m voting for the person who I think I can do that with – the person who I can engage with, have conversations with; the person who...
