The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an animated fantasy adventure comedy film directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. Based on the Mario video game franchise developed by Nintendo, the 2023 film follows the story of Brooklyn plumber Mario who is transported alongside his brother Luigi into a magical world through a mysterious pipe, but Mario and Luigi become separated and now Mario must find him.

Last November, Nintendo officially announced that a live-action movie based on The Legend of Zelda was in development and that Wes Ball would direct. Ball’s credits include The Maze Runner film trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Now, Ball has given fans a little more information about what they may expect from the Zelda movie. “I have this awesome idea,” Ball told Total Film. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time of how cool a Zelda movie would be…”

The filmmaker added, “I want to [fulfill] people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination and video game giant Nintendo have partnered on a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. with theatrical release set for April 3, 2026 in the U.S. and international markets.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will direct from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.

The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal.

The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

Exclusive: The Super Mario Bros. Movie has set its Netflix premiere date for the U.S., Deadline has learned, which is the same day the film is set to leave Peacock: December 3rd. At Netflix, the record-breaker from Uni/Illumination joins a slate of titles with which the whole family can engage.

With the holidays on the horizon, it’s the time of year when locking down titles of this sort is critical, given the promise of a huge surge in viewership. In 2022, family-friendly series and films were in the Top 10 TV or Film lists in 59 countries every week from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Throughout the same period, family-friendly films also made up at least three of the global Top 10 English Films each week.

With Tuesday’s grosses, Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed the $100M (13.74B yen) mark in Japan. In doing so, it becomes Universal’s top title ever there. In local currency, Mario overtakes Top Gun: Maverick as the No. 6 Hollywood film of all time in Japan, and is the No. 1 studio picture since the beginning of the pandemic.

Japan debuted Super Mario in late April with a huge $14.3M to score the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated studio movie, as well as the biggest Saturday box office in Universal history – topping Jurassic World Dominion. In only two days, Mario and Luigi led the fastest Universal film to reach 1B yen. That weekend’s result was Universal’s best ever start in the market.

The worldwide total is to date $1.357B. When excluding China, the total is $1.332B, just edging Frozen II outside that market.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is jumping the $500 million mark at the North American box office in yet another milestone for the blockbuster.

From Illumination and Universal, the movie adaptation of the Nintendo video game is only the fourth movie to cross the half-billion mark domestically in the pandemic era behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7 million) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($683.9 million).

And it is the first Illumination and Universal animation title ever to jump $500 million domestically, not adjusted for inflation. It is also the second highest-grossing animated film of all time domestically. And it is the third-biggest Universal release of all time behind Jurassic World and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Super Mario Bros., which finished Thursday with $499.5 million in domestic ticket sales, has smashed numerous records since its debut in mid-March, including becoming the first title of 2023 to clear $1 billion at the global box office.

For 40 years, intrepid plumber Mario and his brother Luigi have captivated gamers of all ages, taking them on whirlwind adventures in which they teleport through pipes, stomp evil mushrooms and rescue princesses. Why do they do this? Dozens of games, several television shows and a truly terrible 1993 movie have failed to give an answer … the plumbers just warp from our reality to the next, shooting fireballs and competing in go-kart races without any deeper mythology.

There’s no real answer provided in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, either, so don’t get your hopes up. Mario and Luigi are swooped from Brooklyn to a mystical world for reasons never really explained and embark on a quest that makes little sense but accurately captures the games’ color, energy and humor. As cinema, it’s a mess. As simulation, it works.

By most industry standards, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is a massive success. Released at a time when theatrical studio movies have underserved the market for family-friendly entertainment, it transforms the most popular family-friendly videogame franchise into a blockbuster hit.

Enlivened by the same cartoonish pizazz that Illumination Entertainment brought to the “Despicable Me” franchise, the new movie finally cracks an elusive code for Nintendo, which has guarded its library for decades in the aftermath of the misbegotten 1993 live action “Mario” movie. And there’s definitely more to come: With its record-breaking $195 million gross across five days, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” sets the stage for a whole new era of Nintendo adaptations.

There’s only one problem: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is abysmal, at least to my eyes.

Movie,” which should easily earn the best opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation. And in doing so, it will cement Universal as the new king of animation after years of dominance by Disney.

In an effort to take advantage of the holiday and overwhelming pre-release buzz, Universal is releasing this adaptation of the world-famous Nintendo series on Wednesday. Pre-release tracking is predicting a five-day opening of $125 million while Universal’s projection is a tad lower at $110 million. Independent projections for the Friday-Sunday period are starting at $75 million, which would top the video game adaptation record set last year by “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” with $72.1 million.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” gives you a wholesome prankish druggy chameleonic video-game buzz; it’s also a nice, sweet confection for 6-year-olds. Historically, the proverbial problem with live-action movies based on video games — and “Super Mario Bros.,” a leaden dud released 30 years ago, had the dishonor of being the very first one — is that they jam-pack the screen with tropes and fights and characters and landscapes right out of the game, but when it comes to molding all that gimcrackery into, you know, a story, they lose the electronic pulse that made the game addictive. Digital animation is, and always should have been, the true cousin of video games (which are essentially computer fantasies that you control). And “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” takes full advantage of the sculptural liquid zap of the computer-animation medium. Yet it also has a fairy-tale story that’s good enough to get you onto its wavelength.

Nintendo has always stood out as an oasis of untapped potential for an entertainment industry that’s determined to wring every drop of content out of every other preexisting brand. The Super Mario games have produced some of the most beloved characters in pop culture history, and the iconography of warp pipes, mushrooms, go-karts, and carnivorous plants is instantly recognizable. It’s the kind of pre-packaged movie franchise that Bob Iger probably salivated over during his mid-2000s IP shopping spree.

When you really think about it, the only remarkable thing about “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is that it took somebody this long to make it.

For years, the elephant in the room was the horrendous “Super Mario Bros.” from 1993. That monstrosity, which infamously reimagined Mario and Luigi as live-action New York plumbers played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, reportedly scared Nintendo executives out of the movie business for a quarter century.

In 1993, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros was so hideously chaotic that it led the games giant to largely shun the film industry until 2019’s Detective Pikachu. Instead of a moustachioed, hyperactive Italian plumber hopping across platforms and down pipes, we were presented with a depressive Bob Hoskins trapped in what looked like the rotting set of a Broadway musical production of Blade Runner. At least you couldn’t call it predictable, though. The Super Mario Bros Movie, an animated rendition of the game courtesy of Illumination (aka the Minion people), is nothing more and nothing less than what you’d expect from a Mario film.

Its comfortable mediocrity is no better captured than in its choice to cast Chris Pratt – the current face of generic, easy-to-market heroism – in the starring role. Pratt, it should be said, is perfectly capable of the sort of outsized performance Mario needed,...

For some people, perhaps, it will be a point in the win column that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is exactly what it looks like, and nothing more. The long-awaited adaptation of the massively popular worldwide video-game franchise, courtesy of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, is a rare case of the marketing lining up perfectly with the finished product. That makes sense, too, considering how much of the success of "Super Mario Bros." as a video game series is as much about how the games are advertised as it is about the actual games themselves. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" brings together the many recognizable characters of the franchise, the musical flourishes, the colorful design, and even some replication of familiar gameplay, into a brisk 90-minute package that is as critic-proof as it is largely uninspiring.

However, their family and previous colleagues don’t hold much faith in their success. The brothers set out on an adventure to save the city from an incident flooding city streets, which leads them to the sewers.

After the debacle that was the 1993 live-action Super Mario Brothers movie adaptation, the creators of the new animated version clearly felt the need to restore the faith of the wildly popular video game’s legions of fans. While devoted players will weigh in on whether the film fulfills that goal sufficiently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like a labor of love that should easily weather any nitpicking from purists. It should also prove a major cash cow for co-producers Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, with sequels and spin-offs virtually guaranteed.

While Matthew Fogel’s screenplay won’t win any awards, it builds a reasonable framework for the 90 minutes of nearly nonstop mayhem that ensues. This time, it's Universal and Illumination having a crack at it with the animated "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which is bringing many more familiar characters from that world into the fold. One familiar face is that of Donkey Kong, who has a long history with Mario and Luigi. The character is voiced by Seth Rogen, of "Superbad" and "The Fabelmans" fame. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is getting a slightly earlier release date than expected. Universal announced Tuesday that the Nintendo and Illumination animated film will hit theaters April 5, rather than April 7.

The bump will give it an early boost at the box office ahead of the Easter holiday weekend. It now falls on the date of the Jewish holiday Passover.

“Super Mario Bros.” will simultaneously release wide in the United States and in 60 international markets. The film was originally scheduled to release in December 2022.

Mario is powering up his release date.

Universal and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will now hit theaters around the world two days earlier than expected, the company announced Tuesday. The movie’s new release date is Wednesday, April 5, instead of its original Friday, April 7.

In addition to going wide domestically, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will release in more than 60 markets around the world, including China, Australia, France Germany, Italy, Brazil Mexico and the U.K. and Ireland.

There are around 10 markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe opening on a variety of dates in April and May, Universal also announced. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will release in Japan on April 28, timed to the Golden Week Holidays.

First announced in September 2021, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was originally supposed to hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2022, but was delayed a few months later to 2023.

Universal/Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has become the latest Hollywood title to secure a release date in China. The big-screen spin on the iconic videogame franchise will hit Chinese cinemas on April 5, in time for Ching Ming Festival and in step with some other international markets as well as two days before the domestic release on April 7.

China has lately made a shift from last year and been regularly handing out release dates for studio movies, and with more notice. Word of Super Mario Bros’ date comes five weeks ahead of time, allowing runway for marketing and promotion.

The film about the famed videogame plumbers, kart drivers and squashers of turtles is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.

The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. Universal and Nintendo are co-financiers with global release handled by Universal.

Taylor-Joy, 26, lends her voice to Princess Peach in the forthcoming film, which stars Chris Pratt as Mario.
