Last November, Nintendo officially announced that a live-action movie based on The Legend of Zelda was in development and that Wes Ball would direct. Ball’s credits include The Maze Runner film trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Now, Ball has given fans a little more information about what they may expect from the Zelda movie. “I have this awesome idea,” Ball told Total Film. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time of how cool a Zelda movie would be…”
The filmmaker added, “I want to [fulfill] people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

Considering it’s Mario Day, it’s no surprise that we got some news related to the series. And this is a Bowser-sized one, as Nintendo and Illumination will re-team for another movie based around the Mario franchise. Let’s-a go!

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

With Tuesday’s grosses, Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed the $100M (13.74B yen) mark in Japan. In doing so, it becomes Universal’s top title ever there. In local currency, Mario overtakes Top Gun: Maverick as the No. 6 Hollywood film of all time in Japan, and is the No. 1 studio picture since the beginning of the pandemic.
Japan debuted Super Mario in late April with a huge $14.3M to score the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated studio movie, as well as the biggest Saturday box office in Universal history – topping Jurassic World Dominion. In only two days, Mario and Luigi led the fastest Universal film to reach 1B yen. That weekend’s result was Universal’s best ever start in the market.
The worldwide total is to date $1.357B. When excluding China, the total is $1.332B, just edging Frozen II outside that market.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is jumping the $500 million mark at the North American box office in yet another milestone for the blockbuster.
From Illumination and Universal, the movie adaptation of the Nintendo video game is only the fourth movie to cross the half-billion mark domestically in the pandemic era behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7 million) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($683.9 million).
And it is the first Illumination and Universal animation title ever to jump $500 million domestically, not adjusted for inflation. It is also the second highest-grossing animated film of all time domestically. And it is the third-biggest Universal release of all time behind Jurassic World and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Super Mario Bros., which finished Thursday with $499.5 million in domestic ticket sales, has smashed numerous records since its debut in mid-March, including becoming the first title of 2023 to clear $1 billion at the global box office.

For 40 years, intrepid plumber Mario and his brother Luigi have captivated gamers of all ages, taking them on whirlwind adventures in which they teleport through pipes, stomp evil mushrooms and rescue princesses. Why do they do this? Dozens of games, several television shows and a truly terrible 1993 movie have failed to give an answer … the plumbers just warp from our reality to the next, shooting fireballs and competing in go-kart races without any deeper mythology.
There’s no real answer provided in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, either, so don’t get your hopes up. Mario and Luigi are swooped from Brooklyn to a mystical world for reasons never really explained and embark on a quest that makes little sense but accurately captures the games’ color, energy and humor. As cinema, it’s a mess. As simulation, it works.

Anya Taylor-Joy has credited her Super Mario Bros Movie co-star Jack Black with her bilingual abilities.
The actor was born in Florida while her parents were on holiday, but was raised in Argentina until the age of six when her family relocated to London.
Taylor-Joy went viral this week after conducting an interview in fluent Spanish; many of her fans assumed the actor was English.
While discussing her role as Princess Peach in the newly released Super Mario Bros Movie with Buzzfeed, the 26-year-old said she was “super starstruck” meeting Black (who plays Bowser in the film) due to her love of School of Rock.
“At the school I went to, when I first moved to London, they would play School of Rock every Friday,” she told the outlet.
“At that time, I didn’t really speak much English, if any, so that and Harry Potter and Jumanji are like how I learned English.

By most industry standards, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is a massive success. Released at a time when theatrical studio movies have underserved the market for family-friendly entertainment, it transforms the most popular family-friendly videogame franchise into a blockbuster hit.
Enlivened by the same cartoonish pizazz that Illumination Entertainment brought to the “Despicable Me” franchise, the new movie finally cracks an elusive code for Nintendo, which has guarded its library for decades in the aftermath of the misbegotten 1993 live action “Mario” movie. And there’s definitely more to come: With its record-breaking $195 million gross across five days, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” sets the stage for a whole new era of Nintendo adaptations.
There’s only one problem: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is abysmal, at least to my eyes.
I know, the saga of a wayward Brooklyn plumber and his faithful brother, as they get sucked into the Mushroom...

Illumination and Universal’s Nintendo video game adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed another $26 million at the Thursday box office for a two-day domestic haul of $58.2 million. The movie now should have no trouble clearing $150 million or more in its five-day debut, well ahead of expectations and the top start of the year to date.
Some think Super Mario could come in north of $160 million, but that will depend upon how Friday plays out. Overseas, it has already amassed $62.5 million for an early global cume of $120.7 million.

Easter weekend will see the arrival of one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year, Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which should easily earn the best opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation. And in doing so, it will cement Universal as the new king of animation after years of dominance by Disney.
In an effort to take advantage of the holiday and overwhelming pre-release buzz, Universal is releasing this adaptation of the world-famous Nintendo series on Wednesday. Pre-release tracking is predicting a five-day opening of $125 million while Universal’s projection is a tad lower at $110 million. Independent projections for the Friday-Sunday period are starting at $75 million, which would top the video game adaptation record set last year by “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” with $72.1 million.
Reviews have been quite tepid with an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 46%. But at least on opening weekend, the...

Widely considered to be one of the greatest video game franchises ever, Super Mario Bros. is an iconic, generation-spanning success that has taken on many iterations to always keep up with the times. One area in which it failed miserably was the 1993 live-action film version that starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, Brooklyn-based plumbers who go on a fantastical adventure. It was a critical and commercial flop, though it managed to find some bit of a cult following in the ensuing decades.
Movie-wise, though, The Super Mario Bros. Movie — the new animated cinematic collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination is a winner for families, the perfect format for the big screen, and one faithful enough not to turn off legions of fans, old and young alike. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” gives you a wholesome prankish druggy chameleonic video-game buzz; it’s also a nice, sweet confection for 6-year-olds. Historically, the proverbial problem with live-action movies based on video games — and “Super Mario Bros.,” a leaden dud released 30 years ago, had the dishonor of being the very first one — is that they jam-pack the screen with tropes and fights and characters and landscapes right out of the game, but when it comes to molding all that gimcrackery into, you know, a story, they lose the electronic pulse that made the game addictive. Digital animation is, and always should have been, the true cousin of video games (which are essentially computer fantasies that you control). And “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” takes full advantage of the sculptural liquid zap of the computer-animation medium. Yet it also has a fairy-tale story that’s good enough to get you onto its wavelength.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Review: Kid-Friendly Video Game Adaptation Pulls Out All the Power-Ups
Nintendo has always stood out as an oasis of untapped potential for an entertainment industry that’s determined to wring every drop of content out of every other preexisting brand. The Super Mario games have produced some of the most beloved characters in pop culture history, and the iconography of warp pipes, mushrooms, go-karts, and carnivorous plants is instantly recognizable. It’s the kind of pre-packaged movie franchise that Bob Iger probably salivated over during his mid-2000s IP shopping spree.
When you really think about it, the only remarkable thing about “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is that it took somebody this long to make it.
For years, the elephant in the room was the horrendous “Super Mario Bros.” from 1993. That monstrosity, which infamously reimagined Mario and Luigi as live-action New York plumbers played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, reportedly scared Nintendo executives out of the movie business for a quarter century.

In 1993, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros was so hideously chaotic that it led the games giant to largely shun the film industry until 2019’s Detective Pikachu. Instead of a moustachioed, hyperactive Italian plumber hopping across platforms and down pipes, we were presented with a depressive Bob Hoskins trapped in what looked like the rotting set of a Broadway musical production of Blade Runner. At least you couldn’t call it predictable, though. The Super Mario Bros Movie, an animated rendition of the game courtesy of Illumination (aka the Minion people), is nothing more and nothing less than what you’d expect from a Mario film.
Its comfortable mediocrity is no better captured than in its choice to cast Chris Pratt – the current face of generic, easy-to-market heroism – in the starring role. Pratt, it should be said, is perfectly capable of the sort of outsized performance Mario needed,...

For some people, perhaps, it will be a point in the win column that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is exactly what it looks like, and nothing more. The long-awaited adaptation of the massively popular worldwide video-game franchise, courtesy of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, is a rare case of the marketing lining up perfectly with the finished product. That makes sense, too, considering how much of the success of "Super Mario Bros." as a video game series is as much about how the games are advertised as it is about the actual games themselves. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" brings together the many recognizable characters of the franchise, the musical flourishes, the colorful design, and even some replication of familiar gameplay, into a brisk 90-minute package that is as critic-proof as it is largely uninspiring.

The Super Mario platform game series started in 1985, expanding into a media empire that evolved far beyond its beginnings. The Super Mario Bros. Movie brings its collection of vibrant characters to the silver screen, bolstering its Nintendo game references aimed at longtime fans with humor best suited for younger crowds. It’s a gorgeous world to observe, but it doesn’t have the inventive storytelling to match.

Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and his brother, Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day), decide to combine forces and start their own plumbing company. After the debacle that was the 1993 live-action Super Mario Brothers movie adaptation, the creators of the new animated version clearly felt the need to restore the faith of the wildly popular video game’s legions of fans. While devoted players will weigh in on whether the film fulfills that goal sufficiently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like a labor of love that should easily weather any nitpicking from purists. It should also prove a major cash cow for co-producers Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, with sequels and spin-offs virtually guaranteed.
While Matthew Fogel’s screenplay won’t win any awards, it builds a reasonable framework for the 90 minutes of nearly nonstop mayhem that ensues. The film provides an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and his younger brother Luigi (Charlie Day), first seen as regular joe Brooklyn plumbers starting their own business, much to the derision of their former boss,...

30 years after Hollywood originally tried to bring Nintendo's world-famous plumbers to the big screen with the live-action "Super Mario Bros.," the franchise is getting another shot. This time, it's Universal and Illumination having a crack at it with the animated "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which is bringing many more familiar characters from that world into the fold. One familiar face is that of Donkey Kong, who has a long history with Mario and Luigi. The character is voiced by Seth Rogen, of "Superbad" and "The Fabelmans" fame. And, if you've seen the trailers, you know that Donkey Kong just sounds like Seth Rogen now.
So, why is it that Rogen didn't do something a little different with the voice? Speaking with Comicbook.com, the actor explained that it was all part of his pitch to the filmmakers in agreeing to take part in the film. Here's what he had...

The Super Mario Bros. Movie expected to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom with an $85M-$90M 5-Day opening
The box office is about to feel the power of a Super Mushroom when The Super Mario Bros. Movie butt stomps into cinemas. According to Deadline, Illumination/Universal/Nintendo’s Mario movie is advancing toward an $85M-$90M Easter holiday weekend opening. The 5-day opening tracks the film for Wednesday through Sunday, casting a wide net to add as many golden coins to its purse as possible. I’ll tell you this, though. I would not be surprised if The Super Mario Bros. Movie makes over $90M during the 5-day window. Like, way more.
Fan responses to The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers have been outstanding, with many planning to rush to theaters as soon as it opens. I plan to see the movie immediately, preferably at a late-night screening to avoid a kid-dominated crowd. Speaking of the kiddos, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is tracking well with boys and girls under 12 equally.

Jack Black is reuniting with Bobby and Peter Farrelly for Dear Santa, a Christmas comedy with a twist of satanic panic! Black teamed with the Farrelly Brothers for 2001’s cringe comedy Shallow Hal, starring Black as Hal, a man who falls in love with a 300-pound woman because of her inner beauty. The crude humor film is a product of its time, featuring Gweneth Paltrow and Jason Alexander. Dear Santa is entirely different and sounds like something worth raising your horns for.
According to Deadline, Dear Santa centers on a young boy who, in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends them to Satan instead. Black recently teased the project on social media by posting pictures of himself enjoying an elaborate Christmas display. In the photos, Black poses in the back of a brightly-lit penguin and reindeer standee. The mysterious images sent Black’s loyal fanbase into a frenzy,...

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment released the newest trailer "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," based on the world of the Mario video game franchise. We haven't seen a Mario Bros. movie since the monstrosity (I say that with love) that was the 1993 live-action "Super Mario Bros.", and before that, the Japanese anime film "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" from 1986.
This time around, we have Chris Pratt voicing the diminutive Italian plumber instead of voice actor Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario, his brother Luigi, and so many other characters since 1992. (Martinet will reportedly lend his voice in a cameo role in this movie.) As for the plot, we know the kingdom of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and many others (including the penguins we saw in the teaser trailer) are in trouble. Bowser (Jack Black) is trying to take over all the galaxies,...

Universal/Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has become the latest Hollywood title to secure a release date in China. The big-screen spin on the iconic videogame franchise will hit Chinese cinemas on April 5, in time for Ching Ming Festival and in step with some other international markets as well as two days before the domestic release on April 7.
China has lately made a shift from last year and been regularly handing out release dates for studio movies, and with more notice. Word of Super Mario Bros’ date comes five weeks ahead of time, allowing runway for marketing and promotion.
The film about the famed videogame plumbers, kart drivers and squashers of turtles is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.
Super Mario Bros stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
Outside of Avatar: The Way of Water Chinese audiences have been tepid on Hollywood movies in the recent past, though Illumination and Pratt have solid track records in franchise play while the Nintendo Switch console is available in China and the Mario Bros characters are understood to be well known in the market.
The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. Universal and Nintendo are co-financiers with global release handled by Universal.
Earlier this month, Universal Studios Hollywood unveiled the park’s Super Nintendo World with a grand opening event.
Other Hollywood titles with upcoming day-and-date releases in China include Shazam!: Fury of the Gods and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment have released new posters for the upcoming Super Mario Bros Movie, featuring Mario and Luigi in vastly different parts of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario leaps through the air with his fist held high in the first promo, ready to smash blocks while avoiding Piranha Plants and Banzai Bills. Peach’s Castle sits proudly in the distance as pitfalls and traps surround the red-hatted plumber. In the second poster, Luigi is held captive by a group of Shy Guys, pulling him toward a hot air balloon while Bowser’s Castle looms in the background. Both images highlight the brilliant colors seen in the film’s trailer and showcase the disparity between the zones of the Mushroom Kingdom.

The Super Mario Bros Movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. I can’t say I was exactly looking forward to the Super Mario Bros Movie, but I’ll admit that the trailers have won me over. It actually looks like quite a lot of fun. If the film is successful, it could lead to sequels, spinoffs, and adaptations of other Nintendo properties. Charlie Day has expressed an interest...

Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie is making headlines for reasons other than Chris Pratt’s distracting portrayal of arguably the most iconic character in video games. According to a new promotion from McDonald’s, an upcoming Happy Meal toy line includes a surprise character not featured in trailers for the film. At least not yet. The character’s name is Lumalee, a cyan-colored Luma who appears in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Lumalees act as shops in the Mario Bros. universe, selling Life Mushrooms and 1-Up Mushrooms. Players can interact with various Lumas throughout Mario’s universe-spanning adventure.
In the upcoming McDonald’s Happy Meal promo for Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, hungry customers can collect different toys related to characters from the film, including Mario with a Warp Pipe, a fire-breathing Bowser, a Luigi’s Mansion-style Luigi, floating Princess Peach, a barrel-throwing Donkey Kong, Mario Kart-style Mario,...

The Game Awards were held last night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. And while a big story of the night involved a highjacked acceptance speech for a stunt thanking Bill Clinton, in the midst of everything, comic actor Keegan Michael-Key unveiled the first clip from the anticipated animated film, The Super Mario Bros Movie.
The clip gives us a glimpse into the Mushroom Kingdom as Toad, played by Key, escorts Mario, controversially voiced by Chris Pratt, throughout the populated area of the kingdom as they make their way to the Princess’ castle. We’re given a detailed look at the hustle and bustle of the city and treated to many familiar sights and easter eggs as Mario works his way through obstacles in a literal adaptation of the video game platform levels. And then there’s music; the wonderful, wonderful score brings waves of nostalgia and warmth with...

Anya Taylor-Joy has said she is now a “gamer” after preparing for her role in The Super Mario Bros Movie.
Taylor-Joy, 26, lends her voice to Princess Peach in the forthcoming film, which stars Chris Pratt as Mario.
Charlie Day stars as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, while Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen voices Cranky Kong.
In an interview with Modern Luxury San Diego, Taylor-Joy said the research for her role as Princess Peach had turned her into a video game enthusiast.
“So now I am a gamer, and it’s really fun,” she said. “Ideally, I like playing at arcades, because, again, it’s like cinema; I love the ceremony. I’ll go with a whole bunch of friends. And we’ll just spend hours at the arcade.”
The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a script by Matthew Fogel.

The decision to cast Chris Pratt as Mario in the upcoming “Super Mario Bros. Movie” was the subject of endless online conversation, but Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance as Princess Peach will be equally important if the film wants to break the streak of bad movies based on beloved video games.
The “Queen’s Gambit” star seems to understand that, and is taking her research for the film very seriously. In a new interview with Modern Luxury San Diego, Taylor-Joy revealed that the role has turned her into an avid video game player.
