His introduction to drag was almost accidental. When he was choreographing a dance for friends for a show, one of them fell sick at the last minute and he was asked to fill in.
Shangela is the drag daughter of Alyssa Edwards, a drag queen from Season 5 and All Stars 2 of RuPaul's Drag Race.
Performing as Shangela, she was the only queen to appear and compete in 3 separate seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race. This changed in 2018 when fellow drag performers and former RuPaul's Drag Race contestants, Manila Luzon and Latrice Royale came back to compete.
