The 21st edition of the Glasgow Film Festival will open on February 26 with the world premiere of John Maclean’s survival thriller Tornado, starring Tim Roth, Jack Lowden, Takehiro Hira and Kōki.
The festival, which runs through March 9, unveiled its lineup this morning which features another 11 world and European premieres, as well as an In Conversation talk with Glasgow native James McAvoy. The event will close with the world premiere of Scottish documentary filmmaker Martyn Robertson’s Make It To Munich.
Tornado is set in the rugged landscape of 1790’s Britain as the eponymous character (played by model-songwriter Kōki) finds herself caught in a perilous situation when she and her father’s travelling puppet show crosses paths with a ruthless criminal gang led by Sugarman (Roth) and his ambitious son Little Sugar (Lowden). While we'd argue that John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extremely fun movie in its own right—we could watch that poor bastard fall down those stairs, or light people up with his fire shotgun, all damn day—it's also impossible to deny that the 2023 film was a sort of...

Is Keanu Reeves’ John Wick 5 Happening? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
So, what’s the deal with John Wick 5? After Chapter 4 knocked everyone’s socks off, fans wondered if Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving assassin had truly bitten the bullet. Sure, the ending felt like a grand finale, but here’s the real question: will Reeves return for another round of high-kicks and bullet-ridden mayhem?
The actor himself is feeling torn. “My heart does. But my knees are saying right now, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,’” Reeves playfully told CBS News. Yep, John Wick may’ve made him a legendary action star, but at 60 years old, even Reeves’ superhuman endurance has its limits. The man has earned his rest. Still, in a bit of a Wick-y twist, Reeves will appear in a cameo in the Ballerina spinoff, so we’re not exactly saying goodbye to him just yet.

Though John Wick: Chapter 4 was a nearly perfect sendoff to Keanu Reeves' titular character, it missed a perfect opportunity to set up his replacement in the franchise. The ending of John Wick: Chapter 4 likely saw John Wick's death, which put the future of the franchise in jeopardy. Though there are several upcoming John Wick spinoffs in the works, the series is left without its main star, and without a new character to take his place. Even though John Wick: Chapter 5 is on the horizon, it's not clear how the action franchise will fare without Reeves.
Every John Wick movie has helped spread the legend of the eponymous assassin further. Reeves' character started out as a big name in the Russian mob specifically, but by John Wick 4, he was a mythical hero the world over. Even as the world of John Wick continued to expand, and the...

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum stunt performer Anis Cheurfa reveals new details about the dog stunt training for the film, recalling just how long a process it was. Released in 2019 and directed by Chad Stahelski, the third installment in the John Wick franchise sees Keanu Reeves return as the titular assassin, this time on the run as a major bounty is placed on his head. The film features a number of jaw-dropping action sequences, including a shootout in Morocco involving Halle Berry's Sofia, who has two highly-trained dogs that she uses to attack enemies.
During a recent appearance on Corridor Crew's "Stuntmen React" YouTube series, Cheurfa recalls his experience on John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum as a stuntman, in particular the training that went into preparing Sofia's dogs for the shoot. Based on her creative output over the last few years, it's genuinely astonishing that actress Ariana Greenblatt isn't even old enough to legally order a drink yet. Born in August 2007 in New York City to an industry family, Greenblatt booked her first big role in 2016 thanks to the Disney Channel original series "Stuck in the Middle," which cast her as Daphne Diaz — the youngest of seven kids, who still loves playing with dolls but is also pretty vindictive for such a little kid.
After making her film debut in a small supporting role in "A Bad Moms Christmas" in 2017, Greenblatt's career really took off. So, what are her best projects so far? Bear in mind that Greenblatt is still early in her career, and based on her work thus far, her future is incredibly bright. Still, she's made some pretty solid stuff since 2017, including some absolutely enormous blockbusters. Here are her five best roles,...

The Western genre has long been a touchstone of American popular fiction, with an extensive history of incredible television shows. While the genre has experienced ups and downs in popularity, like an Old West hero, Westerns always triumphantly return, as the genre has continually reinvented itself for each era of television. From family-friendly black-and-white half-hour adventures to modern Neo-Western explorations of social and political tensions, the Western genre has remained relevant throughout television history.
In the same way that the greatest Western films have earned their place as cinematic classics, Western television series have carved out an important place in popular culture. From long-running classics of times gone by, such as Bonanza, right up to modern genre-bending sci-fi Westerns like Westworld, this was a style that always found a way to remain interesting. The “Demi-ssance” is taking the Toronto Film Festival by storm.
And Demi Moore, who is at the center of the tempest thanks to her go-for-broke performance as an actress who makes a pact with the devil in return for eternal youth in “The Substance,” was honored on Friday night at the Variety Cover Party at TIFF, sponsored by J. “I am extremely humbled by this whole experience,” Moore, who was accompanied by her teacup Chihuahua, Pilaf, said in brief remarks. “This film has some very powerful themes about aging and beauty, about the standards of which we all hold ourselves to.”
Moore went on to say that she hoped that the movie will prompt conversations about “the negative self talk” that many people experience, one that might lead to “a cultural shift.” It would be a change in perception...

A clip of the real “Press Your Luck” episode from 1984 that inspired “The Luckiest Man in America” accompanies the end credits, taken from the mid-show banter between contestant Michael Larson and Peter Tomarken. Larson has the kind of anecdotes that probably made a producer smile during a pre-interview, telling Tomarken about how he tried to make good with his daughter after missing her birthday and drove an ice cream truck the previous summer to supplement his income as an air conditioning repairman. It’s good enough to fill 45 seconds of air time, but it’s hard to see what director Samir Oliveros did in making it the backbone of a 90-minute film covering Larson’s infamous appearance on the game show.
If Larson is remembered now, it’s for the fact that he won $110,000 on the show by memorizing the algorithm of the game’s Big Board to maximize his prize potential,...

For a film about a game show surrounding the pushing of a button at just the right moment, it’s fascinating how “The Luckiest Man in America” goes out of its way to never fall into a pattern. Whenever you think you’ve got a read on what it’s going for, the film will dart in another direction and throw out what it’d just been doing moments prior.
Though one could call it a thriller based on a true story about a man who rigged a game show, it also has the heart of a dramedy hidden away somewhere that you occasionally catch flashes of under the brightly colored studio lights. With Paul Walter Hauser capturing the specific quirks and buried anxieties of the titular “luckiest man,” it’s a film that provides a strange snapshot — even if it may fade away just as quickly.

Since breaking through (at least to me) as the loose cannon nutso friend Shawn Eckardt in I, Tonya, Paul Walter Hauser has had a series of celebrated roles playing guys on the outskirts, including the bumbling Horace in Cruella, “Stingray” in Cobra Kai, the title character of the accused Atlanta Olympics bomber in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, hopeless criminal Booch in the current The Instigators, and his Emmy-winning role as creepy killer Larry Hall in Black Bird.
Well, chalk up another one as Hauser knocks it out of the park on the weirdo scale as legendary game show contestant Michael Larson in The Luckiest Man in America, which just had its world premiere as one of the 2024 Toronto Film Festival’s opening-night attractions. Expend4bles' poor reception and low box office earnings may hinder the series' continuation. John Wick 4's success and satisfying ending make a 5th installment less necessary the complete opposite problem of The Expendables. Other action franchises are more deserving of sequels, and The Expendables 5 just doesn't feel like a good move at this point.
The Expendables 5 has the opposite problem of another big-budget ensemble action movie franchise. Put simply, The Expendables 4 stylized as Expend4bles was so poorly received that audiences might not want a fifth entry in the series at all. The fourth entry in the Sylvester Stallone-led action series used its $100 million budget to reinvent itself, but refused to commit to any actual change. Initially, the film kills off Stallone's Barney Ross, making way for Jason Statham's Lee Christmas to lead the elite mercenaries. Unfortunately, Expend4bles made an embarrassing $51.1 million at the box office.

For those who remember, the game show Press Your Luck relied a lot on good timing. In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.
The synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,
“Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show Press Your Luck harboring a secret:...

Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show ‘Press Your Luck’ harboring a secret: the key to endless amounts of money. Canadian actor-brothers Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) had their stars unveiled on Scarborough’s Walk of Fame. The men were raised in the marginalized Toronto community by a single mother who emigrated to Canada from Jamaica.
“It’s really humbling and flattering to receive something like this in my hometown, at a mall where I grew up, where I shopped, it’s pretty cool,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The local Walk of Fame honor for the fast-rising Hollywood stars is more than an exercise in collective positive thinking for an inner-city neighborhood that earlier brought to the world celebrities like Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and The Weeknd.
The brothers are at work via their Bay Mills Studios production banner — named after the community housing project they grew up in Scarborough — on a landmark TV drama set in the inner-city community that is their home away from Hollywood.

With no casting information for John Wick 5, any number of martial arts stars could join the franchise. Michelle Yeoh could bring her legendary martial arts skills to John Wick 5, potentially elevating the franchise even further. Jason Statham, known for his action roles, could be an interesting choice to continue the John Wick franchise without Keanu Reeves.
Although John Wick 5 has been confirmed, there is no information about casting yet, so it's unclear whether the franchise will maintain the tradition of casting martial arts stars in important roles. The John Wick franchise has already welcomed Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Yayan Ruhian, Mark Dacascos and Hiroyuki Sanada. Each movie seems to increase the number of actors with top-level martial arts training, and John Wick 5 could continue this trend. With martial arts becoming increasingly important to the appeal of John Wick, some big stars could be tempted to join the franchise.

Heath Ledger's Joker performance in The Dark Knight inspired modern movie villains with its unhinged persona and complex portrayal. Actors like Michael B. Jordan in Black Panther and Shamier Anderson in John Wick took inspiration from Ledger's Joker for their antagonistic roles. The legacy of Ledger's Joker extends to other characters like Silva in Skyfall and Ma-Ma in Dredd, influencing their chaotic and brutal personas.
More than 15 years after Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, the character has inspired many more movie villains. Ledger set the bar for how to play an irredeemable villain, portraying Batman's most iconic nemesis. From the first reveal as the mastermind of a bank robbery, Ledger's Joker is a terrifying presence that can be matched by only a few other villains in cinematic history. Most of the time, he has an understated if creepy presence — but Ledger carries the Joker's reputation in Gotham City,...

Just when the entertainment world felt like it couldn't possibly sustain even just a single shared universe on top of what we already have, yet another contender is about to enter the ring. The "John Wick" franchise's first attempt at expanding its influence to the small screen with "The Continental," uh, didn't go very well, to put it mildly. In an appearance...
