The 21st edition of the Glasgow Film Festival will open on February 26 with the world premiere of John Maclean’s survival thriller Tornado, starring Tim Roth, Jack Lowden, Takehiro Hira and Kōki.

The festival, which runs through March 9, unveiled its lineup this morning which features another 11 world and European premieres, as well as an In Conversation talk with Glasgow native James McAvoy. The event will close with the world premiere of Scottish documentary filmmaker Martyn Robertson’s Make It To Munich.

Dev Patel will star in “The Journeyman,” a crime thriller directed by Tarsem Singh from a script by husband-wife duo Bryan and Alexis Roberts (aka The Roberts). Patel plays a down-on-his-luck tennis pro who is drawn into the dark world of match-fixing to make ends meet for his family.

AGC Studios will fully finance and produce the film with Academy Award nominee Scott Franklin, Patel’s Minor Realm and Lbi Entertainment.

Joining Franklin as producers are AGC Studios chairman and CEO Stuart Ford and Mason Eways for Lbi Entertainment. Shamier Anderson and Stephan James will executive produce for Bay Mills.

AGC Intl. represents the film’s international distribution rights and will introduce the film to buyers at the AFM next week; CAA Media Finance is handling domestic with AGC. Production is set to commence next year.

IFC Films and Sapan Studio have acquired US rights to Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) selection The Luckiest Man In America starring Paul Walter Hauser.

The true-life story takes place in May 1984 as an unemployed ice cream truck driver from Ohio participates in the game show Press Your Luck and arouses the suspicions of network executives when he goes on a winning streak.

The cast includes David Strathairn, Shamier Anderson, Walton Goggins, Maisie Williams, Haley Bennett, and Johnny Knoxville. IFC Films is planning a 2025 theatrical release.

The “Demi-ssance” is taking the Toronto Film Festival by storm.

And Demi Moore, who is at the center of the tempest thanks to her go-for-broke performance as an actress who makes a pact with the devil in return for eternal youth in “The Substance,” was honored on Friday night at the Variety Cover Party at TIFF, sponsored by J. Crew, Shark and Shark Beauty. The celebration was held at Daphne.

“I am extremely humbled by this whole experience,” Moore, who was accompanied by her teacup Chihuahua, Pilaf, said in brief remarks. “This film has some very powerful themes about aging and beauty, about the standards of which we all hold ourselves to.”

Moore went on to say that she hoped that the movie will prompt conversations about “the negative self talk” that many people experience, one that might lead to “a cultural shift.” It would be a change in perception...

A clip of the real “Press Your Luck” episode from 1984 that inspired “The Luckiest Man in America” accompanies the end credits, taken from the mid-show banter between contestant Michael Larson and Peter Tomarken. Larson has the kind of anecdotes that probably made a producer smile during a pre-interview, telling Tomarken about how he tried to make good with his daughter after missing her birthday and drove an ice cream truck the previous summer to supplement his income as an air conditioning repairman. It’s good enough to fill 45 seconds of air time, but it’s hard to see what director Samir Oliveros did in making it the backbone of a 90-minute film covering Larson’s infamous appearance on the game show.

For a film about a game show surrounding the pushing of a button at just the right moment, it’s fascinating how “The Luckiest Man in America” goes out of its way to never fall into a pattern. Whenever you think you’ve got a read on what it’s going for, the film will dart in another direction and throw out what it’d just been doing moments prior.

Though one could call it a thriller based on a true story about a man who rigged a game show, it also has the heart of a dramedy hidden away somewhere that you occasionally catch flashes of under the brightly colored studio lights. With Paul Walter Hauser capturing the specific quirks and buried anxieties of the titular “luckiest man,” it’s a film that provides a strange snapshot — even if it may fade away just as quickly.

Expend4bles' poor reception and low box office earnings may hinder the series' continuation. John Wick 4's success and satisfying ending make a 5th installment less necessary the complete opposite problem of The Expendables. Other action franchises are more deserving of sequels, and The Expendables 5 just doesn't feel like a good move at this point.

The Expendables 5 has the opposite problem of another big-budget ensemble action movie franchise. Put simply, The Expendables 4 stylized as Expend4bles was so poorly received that audiences might not want a fifth entry in the series at all. The fourth entry in the Sylvester Stallone-led action series used its $100 million budget to reinvent itself, but refused to commit to any actual change. Initially, the film kills off Stallone's Barney Ross, making way for Jason Statham's Lee Christmas to lead the elite mercenaries. Unfortunately, Expend4bles made an embarrassing $51.1 million at the box office.

“The Tomorrow War” and “The Lego Batman Movie” filmmaker Chris McKay has been tapped to direct an adaptation of Brynne Weaver’s bestselling serial killer romance, “Butcher & Blackbird,” for Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company (Rpc).

The novel is the first installment of Weaver’s popular “Ruinous Love” trilogy, which was released in October. It became a New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller and was a favorite on BookTok, TikTok’s hub for book lovers. Weaver recently signed a seven-figure deal for her upcoming dark rom-com trilogy. She has sold over 1 million copies of her books in over 18 countries.

Lyrical Media’s Alexander Black and Rpc’s Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce the film, with Rpc’s Emma Rappold serving as co-producer. Lyrical Media’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive produce alongside Weaver. The film does not have a screenwriter attached.

Lyrical Media has entered into a first-look film deal with Ryder Picture Company (Rpc), a production company helmed by industry veteran and Academy Award-nominee Aaron Ryder and partner Andrew Swett.

Lyrical Media, which is run by CEO Alexander Black, COO/CFO Jon Rosenberg and vice president of development and production Natalie Sellers, and Rpc recently partnered on Michael Sarnoski’s “The Death of Robin Hood,” starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, which WME Independent introduced in Cannes, as well as Adam Wingard’s action-thriller “Onslaught” with A24.

In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.

Writer Simon Kinberg is best known for his contributions to the X Men franchise, scripting The Last Stand, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, which was also his directorial debut. His other credits include Mr and Mrs Smith, the 2015 version of Fantastic Four and the rebooted version of The Twilight Zone.

Apple TV+ wants more of the sci-fi thriller Invasion and has picked up the series from Simon Kinberg (the Deadpool films) and David Weil (Hunters) for a third season.

Commenting on the third season renewal order, creator/executive producer Kinberg stated: “I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to do with our first two seasons of the show with our partners at Apple TV+ and our cast and crew. This new season will continue to build on the scale, stakes, and propulsion of the Invasion, while keeping our characters front and center, bringing them together in ways that will hopefully surprise and most importantly move our audience, who have been so incredibly supportive and inspiring since day one.”

Apple TV+ will continue its intergalactic expansion: the streamer has announced a Season 3 renewal for its global hit “Invasion.”

The sci-fi drama series, which debuted in October 2021, follows an alien invasion of Earth through different perspectives around the world, following the events as they unfold in real-time through the eyes of five ordinary people struggling to make sense of the chaos happening before them.

The same week the season finale aired, it was announced that a second season of the show had been ordered. Invasion season 2 finally made its way to the screen in August of 2023 and wrapped up in October. It’s taken them a while, but Apple TV+ has now officially confirmed that they’ve renewed Invasion for season 3. The new batch of episodes are expected to begin filming later this month.

Created by Simon Kinberg and David Weil, Invasion is set across multiple continents and is described as a sweeping, character-driven science fiction drama series that follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world. Season 2 picked up 121 days after the invasion started.
