Bangkok-based film fund Purin Pictures will disburse $140,000 to three Philippines and one Indonesian film as part of its fall grants.

The Purin committee has chosen three fiction and one documentary projects for production support and one documentary project for post-production support.

“The Remotes” is John Torres’ first fiction film after two decades of making documentaries. “Filipinana” by Rafael Manuel is expanded from a short film and was recently awarded at the Asian Project Market in Busan. “Jaguar” by Dean Colin Marcial is an urban thriller that straddles the gap between independent and mainstream genre cinema. Rounding out the selection are two documentaries, “Bariles” by Sheryl Rose Andes and “Planet of Love” by Ika Wulandari, that examine marginalized livelihoods in the Philippines and Indonesia respectively.

The Philippines dominates the autumn 2023 selection of Bangkok-based film fund Purin Pictures, which will give a combined $140,000 in production grants to five upcoming projects.

The titles from Southeast Asia comprise John Torres’ The Remotes, Rafael Manuel’s Filipinana, Dean Colin Marcial’s Jaguar and documentaries Bariles by Sheryl Rose Andes and Planet Of Love by Ika Wulandari.

Interfilm International Short Film Festival Berlin is back with its 38th edition, running from the 15th to the 20th of November 2022. This year the regional focus will be on the cinematography of the Philippines, while the thematic focus Ghosts of Europe looks towards the EU. Interfilm dedicates also a spotlight program to Belarusian filmmaking, which courageously takes on the current regime.

To use the organisers’ words: “The competitions present themselves as usual politically, combative and at the same time empathetic and full of confidence. Great stories meet abstract animation, essayistic forms meet concrete narration. (…) Interforum is the place to discuss and learn, and various special programs and events round off the week dedicated to short film.“

As film nonprofits go, Miami’s Borscht Corp has a different way of doing things. Whether it’s buying a speedboat as the first step in fundraising for a feature, or “canceling” a secret party on social media to throw off the cops, Borscht’s organizational methods are as experimental and visionary as the work it produces. That includes the Borscht Film Festival, a “quasi-yearly” event showcasing films, sculpture, performances, and installations by emerging regional filmmakers.

While Borscht may sound obscure, it lies at the heart of Barry Jenkins’ success. When Borscht co-founder (and “Moonlight” co-producer) Andrew Hevia saw Miami native Jenkins’ first feature, the San Francisco-set “Medicine for Melancholy,” he became determined to bring Jenkins back to Miami to shoot a film. Borscht commissioned a short film from Jenkins, “Chlorophyl,” for the 2011 festival. “That sort of re-awakened [Jenkins] to the city,” said Borscht co-founder Lucas Leyva, an accomplished filmmaker and producer himself.

Five fiction, five documentary projects from underrepresented voices to receive support.

Tribeca Film Institute (Tfi) has announced the 10 projects selected for the 14th annual Tribeca All Access (Taa) programme.

Tfi’s Artist Programmes team selected the projects from scripted and documentary works-in-progress that represent communities largely underserved in the entertainment industry.

Five grants will be awarded to the following scripted projects:

Monsters And Men: written and directed by Reinaldo Green;

Selah And The Spades: written and directed by Tayarisha Poe;

The Green Guerrillas: written and directed by Dean Marcial;

The Short History Of The Long Road: written and directed by Ani Simon-Kennedy; and

White: Co-written and directed by A. Sayeeda Moreno. Co-written by Michah Schaffer.

Five grants will be awarded to the following documentary projects:

This past Wednesday, August 6th, saw the close of the 18th edition of Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival; and now that the dust has settled, we have the full list of this year's award winners plus the Fest's dates for 2015.

Returning to its home at Concordia University after the location’s massive 2013 renovations, the acclaimed Fantasia International Film Festival, North America’s longest-running genre film fest, benefited from having three theaters in which to screen its record 160+ films.
