Even Quentin Tarantino got in on the act a few years ago with Once Upon Time In Hollywood but that doesn’t seem to be stopping directors continuing to make them. They are obviously still popular and people think they can add something new and interesting to everything else that has been told. This one is a little different because it doesn’t really feature Charles Manson himself, so that title is a little misleading. In it, a couple are putting in an audition tape for a film about Charles Manson.

The XYZ Films title from director Remy Grillo centers on a young couple (Hughes and Plasse) hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. When they choose an eclectic desert Airbnb as the perfect backdrop, the dark events of the audition material slowly slip into their reality, until they find themselves intertwined in an occult, sinister plot led by King and Grillo’s characters.

Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the script, which is inspired by modern occult activity in the California desert, with production to kick off in Yucca Valley, California this month.

Voltage Pictures swings into the Afm with international sales rights to Distant Horizon’s upcoming thriller Serpent.

Amanda Evans will make her feature directorial debut based on her screenplay, which was selected for the Berlin Co-Production Market in 2012.

It’s no Shaun of the Dead – despite copying a few tricks from it – but this silly zombie action romp has some good laughs

As well as many other cheerfully offensive points, this zombie teen action-comedy has some speculation about what happens when animals, as well as humans, get bitten by the horrible bug. It doesn’t have the poignancy or satire shown in Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead – although the fight scene accompanied by Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 is Wrightesque – but there are laughs. Ben (played by Tye Sheridan – from Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life) is a member of a local scout troop, along with sex-obsessed Carter (Logan Miller) and nerdy Augie (Joey Morgan). Ben senses that the scout uniform is not exactly a babe magnet, but when the zombie apocalypse hits, it’s these boys’ can-do scouting spirit that is going to save their local community.

2015 has been an exceptional year for genre-infused comedies and the latest, Christopher Landon’s wickedly entertaining Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, is yet another great addition to this year’s class. Horror movies are a genre I usually like to watch with as few people as possible simply because general horror audiences are awful. Constant chatting, giggling and laughing at inopportune moments, directing each character and what their decisions should be, or critiquing their actions. Oh, and the cell phones! What is there to say about Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse that its title doesn’t say? At first glance, it seems to be the perfect picture for seventeen-year-olds who have just earned a driver’s license and the freedom to see it without a parent or adult guardian. While it’s no surprise that a zombie comedy loaded with beat-pounding electronica isn’t exactly canon Romero, the reckless abandon that Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse shows towards genre mythos is asinine, yet admirable(ish). Writers Emi Mochizuki, Carrie Evans, Christopher Landon, and Lona Williams couldn’t care less about undead continuity, as they flesh out a strobe-lit, gooey debauchery in the vein of a much more immature Zombieland. Think American Pie meets Dance Of The Dead, where director Christopher Landon (pulling double duty) goes style over substance into levels of zombie-stripping, head-exploding madness. True horror junkies are going to be crying foul after every unexplained walker detail, but younger fans enamored by gratuitous death sequences will probably be laughing too hard to care as Dillon Francis’ head transforms into a bloody mist.

Undoubtedly one of the funniest genre films of the year arrives in theaters this weekend, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, which was directed by Christopher Landon and stars David Koechner (Anchorman), Tye Sheridan (the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse), Logan Miller (+1), Joey Morgan, and Sarah Dumont (Don Jon). The film follows a group of Scouts as they deal with an impending zombie invasion, with often hilarious results.

At the recent press day, Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Landon—who previously made his mark in the genre world as a writer and director for the Paranormal Activity franchise—about his experiences helming Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, working with Koechner as well as the film’s younger stars, his thoughts on how the landscape of horror comedies has never been stronger than it is this year, and much more.
