From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.
Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.
Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. The companies already have a number of projects in development.”

Lockwood & Co. coming to Netflix just six weeks after the streaming service cancelled its last solid adaptation of a British fantasy YA book series in The Bastard Son & The Devil Itself, feels a bit like getting a new puppy after your last one was run over. You’re happy it’s here, obviously, but there’s a tug of wariness about getting too attached.
It’s very easy to get attached to this eight-episode ghost story about three teens running a supernatural detective agency. The cast is charming, the characters are likeable and their world – in which a nightly curfew and platoons of rapier-bearing teens protects London from spectral attack – is solidly conceived.
There are ongoing mysteries plus episodic encounters and an evolving Scooby Gang dynamic between its young leads. It has a touch of Harry Potter plus a touch of Being Human, and families who enjoyed Wednesday together could...

"All it takes is a few big cases" Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for Lockwood & Co., a new supernatural series made by the acclaimed UK filmmaker Joe Cornish (director of Attack the Block and The Kid Who Would Be King). This is based on a book series that involves a ghost-hunters group called Lockwood & Co. - a small agency in London that runs independent of any adult supervision. A tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history. Starring Ruby Stokes as Lucy Carlyle, Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood, Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George Karim, plus Ivanno Jeremiah, Jack Bandeira, Morven Christie, Rhianna Dorris, and Paddy Holland. Yeah this concept still looks like Ghostbusters + Harry Potter, but with Joe Cornish behind the lens it actually looks awesome anyway!

Ben Pearce’s brilliant short film A Few Miles South tells the story of two arctic explorers trapped in a tent during a blizzard. But when one of them battles a strange addiction the other is faced with the decision of feeding his companion’s odd impulses or facing death outside. Pearce tells this story within a single location and with no dialogue which only serves to elevate the tension and claustrophobia between his characters. Without changing the environment too Pearce is able to create a feeling of disorientation which further accentuates the gallows humour of his character’s surreal behaviours. Dn is excited to Premiere A Few Miles South on our pages today and is joined by Pearce for a conversation about the film’s speedy production, the ease of working with collaborators like Toby Jones and Ivanno Jeremiah, and the challenge of constructing the film’s central perplexing nature during post-production.

Warning: this A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
They may be magical creatures ruled by mystical rites, but when it comes to family, the vampires, witches and daemons are no different from the rest of us. Gather the clan together under one roof and pretty soon it’s all rivalry, resentment and stalking out of dinner in a huff. One brother doesn’t like his new sister-in-law, the youngest wants the eldest to move with the times. ‘You’re breaking an ancient covenant’, ‘You didn’t tell me I carried a genetic disease that turned my vampire children into uncontrollably vicious monsters’… All the usual beef. The only difference is that the de Clermonts get to do it in all a stunningly lit castle over a glass of what must be excellent wine.
Season three got off to a mournful start as Diana and Matthew time-walked straight to poor Aunt Em’s death bed.

It’s the beginning of the end on A Discovery of Witches. In the TV adaptation’s third and final season, Diana and Matthew return to the present to face a personal tragedy and deep political division among the creatures. The forces of conservatism seek to preserve the separation between vampires, witches and daemons; while reformers wish to dismantle the status quo. Threats from the Book of Life, the Oxford blood-rage killer, the Congregation and Peter Knox all continue, while Diana comes into her prophesied role as the witch who will change everything.
Joining the existing characters in the ongoing battle are newcomers Fernando (Olivier Huband), Ransome (Parker Sawyers), Geraldine (Genesis Lynea), Dr Roberts (Ivanno Jeremiah), and actor Toby Regbo. Season three also welcomes Peter McDonald, who takes over the existing role of Baldwin St Clair from Trystan Gravelle. Find out more about them all below, with mild spoilers right at the end.

One spinoff of Game of Thrones is not enough for HBO.
The premium cabler is reportedly developing a prequel based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas about Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen).
Variety first reported the exciting news, but there has been no official comment from HBO.
It is the third spinoff to land at HBO since the hit original series ended its eight-season run in 2019.
House of the Dragon nabbed a formal series order last year and will follow the Targaryen family, as told in another of Martin's novels.
However, the cast only took shape in recent months, with Matt Smith (Doctor Who) playing Prince Daemon Targaryen and Paddy Considine (The Outsider) as King Viserys.
Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) is also on board as Alicent Hightower, the Hand of the King’s daughter, and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, King Viserys’ eldest child.

Fremantle Backs Diversity Leadership Scheme
Fremantle has teamed with The TV Collective, Indigo Talent, and former ITV Studios executive Remy Blumenfeld to launch a scheme that will work with 50 middle-to-senior Bame professionals to help them break into industry leadership roles. Under the Breakthrough Leaders initiative, those chosen will be mentored by a top industry figure, have access to coaching, and be part of a cohort of fellow executives. Nominations can be submitted here, with a deadline for entries being set for January 15. The scheme is designed to address industry concerns that there are plenty of entry-level initiatives for people from diverse backgrounds, but Bame professionals are hitting a glass ceiling when it comes to breaking into top roles. Fremantle’s own global leadership team is made up entirely of white executives, while in the UK, Fatima Salaria and Athena Witter are part of the top team.

While drive-in theaters remain virtually the only theaters still open in the U.S. (and a good place to see a new release like haunted-tree horror “The Wretched”), distributors are getting creative about how to release indie and foreign films.

A relatively modest, low-key tale about global refugee issues that are usually portrayed in a higher dramatic key, “The Flood” makes a somewhat underwhelming first impression. But it gradually overcomes that to arrive at a potent (if still quiet) cumulative impact, bolstered by strong performances from leads Ivanno Jeremiah and Lena Headey. A nonstarter on theatrical home turf nearly a year ago, the feature should do better in home formats, with Samuel Goldwyn launching release to Stateside VOD platforms on May 1.
Helen Kingston’s screenplay initially seems too arid and schematic, as Headey’s grimly impersonal English immigration officer Wendy interviews newly-arrived asylum seeker Haile (Jeremiah). He says he can’t return to his native Eritrea because, “They will kill me.” But the flashbacks detailing his flight feel too sketchy as explanation, with gaps larger than our imaginations can easily fill in.

Lena Headey and Iain Glen star in The Flood as two hardened immigration officers in the UK. In our exclusive clip, they will appear momentarily. First, though, Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is seen during his days as a solder, standing over a man who has dug a hole, just big enough to cover up his body. Haile must make a life-or-death decision. Then, he flashes back to the present, where we see him in a small room with Iain Glen and Lena Headey. How has he processed this memory? And how will he present it to the immigration officers? The Flood follows Wendy (Lena Headey) as she investigates a high-profile case. She was granted the assignment because she is known for her quick and clinical approach....

"England will not want you." "I've always been unwanted..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie drama titled The Flood, which originally opened in the UK last summer. It will be available to watch on digital in the Us starting in early May. The film presents an intriguing, dramatic look at the challenges of immigration and the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. The story follows a "hardened immigration officer" named Wendy, and an asylum seeker named Haile who has traveled great distances to reach the UK hoping to stay there. Lena Headey stars, joined by Ivanno Jeremiah playing Haile, and a cast including Iain Glen, Arsher Ali, Mandip Gill, Amira Ghazalla, Jack Gordon, and Christopher Sciueref. This looks like a compelling and gripping film about the times we live in with mass immigration worldwide. And a very powerful statement about refugees and why it's all...

I gotta say, I didn’t see this coming. The Game of Thrones prequel series that was being developed for HBO is not moving forward. They passed on the project.
Jane Goldman was leading the charge on this project, and it starred Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo. S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) directed the pilot episode.
I’m actually kinda bummed out by this because the concept of the series sounded so cool! George R.R. Martin called the series “The Long Night,” which is the era that the story is set in. But, that wasn’t the official title. The series was set about 5,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones and would have featured a very different Westeros. It was explained:
“Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne.

The world of Game of Thrones may be expanding, but the prequel starring Naomi Watts is dead in the water.
Deadline first reported the news that the series written by Jane Goldman will not be getting a formal series order at the premium cable network.
The news is a little surprising given the talent associated with the series. It was poised to become the first in a long line of series that would be set before the parent series.
HBO has yet to confirm the news, but Deadline notes that Goldman, who also served as showrunner, has been contacting the cast and crew to let them know the show is not moving forward.
A pilot was filmed earlier this year, so it did make it far into the development process, but given that this will be a spinoff of one of the most popular shows in the world, expectations were high.

The new, live-action "Game of Thrones" prequel "Bloodmoon" stars Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, Josh Whitehouse, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo, set years before the events of the "Game of Thrones" TV series, when 'dragons' ruled 'Westeros', airing on HBO in 2020:
"...taking place years before the events of 'Game of Thrones', the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden 'Age of Heroes' into its darkest hour.
"And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of the history of 'Westeros' to the true origins of the ghastly 'white walkers', the mysteries of the 'East', to the 'Starks of legend. It's not the story we think we know..."
"Westeros is a very different place," said Got author George R.R. Martin about the new series.

HBO is going to back to Westeros… again. The pay-cable network is nearing a pilot order for a second spinoff of its hugely popular “Game of Thrones” series, this one based on the Targaryen family, TheWrap has learned.
HBO declined to comment on the potential spinoff, which was first reported by Deadline, but an individual with knowledge of the project confirmed the report’s accuracy to TheWrap.
The series is from “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin and “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal. It would be set 300 years before the events of the HBO fantasy series, which wrapped its eight-season run earlier this year. Representatives for Condal and Martin did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Turns out George R.R. Martin may not have been getting your hopes up about additional “Game of Thrones” spinoffs after all.
Soon after HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday that production had wrapped on the untitled “GoT” prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts, he told TheWrap the pay-tv channel is still “possibly” considering ordering pilots for additional spinoff projects that are in development.
“I think we have one or two more scripts,” he told us. “But we’re gonna see what happens with this one.”
Bloys wouldn’t say if he meant the decision to order another pilot will be made after this one (which is now in editing) is or isn’t ordered to series, or after the potential show airs. Actually, he wouldn’t...

Production has wrapped on HBO’s Naomi Watts-led “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot, which began shooting in Belfast, Ireland this summer, Casey Bloys said during the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday.
The HBO programming boss also addressed the online petition that was started by fans asking the pay-tv channel to remake the final season of “GoT” with “competent writers” (a dig at showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) which he says “shows a lot of enthusiasm.”
“Look, I take all of the activity around the finale as — there are very, very few downsides to having a hugely popular show, but one I can think of is when you try to end it, many people have big opinions on how it should end,” Bloys told reporters. “I think that just comes with the territory.”

HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel has yet to be given an official title, but that’s not stopping George R.R. Martin from trying to dub it himself. The author has referred in the past to the series as The Long Night, which the network has denied as being the name. In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, however, the writer revealed what he hopes to be the moniker for the show when all is said and done.
“I heard a suggestion that it could be called The Longest Night, which is a variant I wouldn’t mind,” he says. “That would be pretty good.”
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but such a title would be a fitting representation of how many fans feel on Sunday nights now that the original series is over. The prequel has been filming under the production label of Blood Moon, though...

While many fans are still trying to rid their mouth of the sour taste left by the show’s final season (I know I am), it looks like HBO is moving forward with a Game of Thrones prequel, which is rumored to take place 10,000 years before the story laid out in A Song of Ice and Fire. Somewhere deep within HBO towers, plans are afoot for a Game of Thrones prequel series – but not just any prequel series, one which takes place a full 10,000 years before A Song of Ice and Fire.
Said to be working under the codename ‘Blood Moon,’ HBO’s prehistoric spinoff has already amassed a fantastic ensemble cast, which boasts Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.
And with filming already underway across parts of Belfast and Northern Ireland, it’s becoming increasingly clear that HBO is hoping to fast-track this Thrones prequel series for a late 2020/early 2021 premiere. There’s just one issue: it likely won’t enjoy the same levels of success as its predecessor. Or so says George R.R. Martin himself, who knows a thing or two about the mystical worlds of Westeros and Essos.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel might be the cure for what’s ailing fans who did not care for how Dan Weiss and David Benioff’s ended the main series last month. If Naomi Watts, the star of the currently untitled HBO pilot, is to be believed, you “won’t be let down” by this one, guys.

The previous film in the series, 2010’s Toy Story 3, had a three-day opening weekend of £11.5m, although it had opened on Monday and made £21.2m in total on that first week.

Lena Headey plays an immigration official overseeing the case of an Eritrean migrant whose capture at Dover sparks tabloid fury
Here is a well-meaning and honestly acted drama from screenwriter Helen Kingston and director Anthony Woodley about migrants seeking asylum in the UK. But it feels glib, programmatic and contrived, particularly the ending, and almost at times like a bien-pensant image of how things are behind the uncaring newspaper headlines.
Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is a migrant from Eritrea who has been captured at Dover in circumstances that have led him to be demonised by the tabloids as a possible violent terrorist. Wendy (Lena Headey) is the immigration official who has to assess his case, while dealing with personal problems of her own, and under pressure from her harassed boss Philip (Iain Glen) who is in turn being leant on by the Home Office. As Wendy questions Haile in the interview room,...

HBO has officially started production on the untitled Game of Thrones prequel series. The series is shooting in Northern Ireland and we have a photo for you to check out. It features a mysterious character on horseback looking over a frozen wasteland with a city in the background.
George R.R. Martin is calling the series “The Long Night”, which is the era that the story is set in. But, that’s not the official title. The series is set about 5,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones and this is going to be a very different Westeros that won’t be familiar to fans. It’s explained:
“Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with...

There’s a distinct lack of compassion in modern society, and it’s this very notion that was the topic of conversation when we sat down with director Anthony Woodley, and actor Ivanno Jeremiah to mark the release of The Flood.
This moving drama focuses in on the journey on a refugee, played by Jeremiah, vying to start a new, safer life on British soil, and his subsequent interview process with the hardened immigration officer (Lena Headey) who stands in his way. We discuss what it was like filming amongst real refugees, and why people in the UK, and America for example, are finding so little empathy for these poor people fleeing their war-torn countries in a bid to survive. We also get on the subject of Game of Thrones, as not only does this film star Headey and Iain Glen, but Jeremiah has landed a role in the forthcoming prequel…...
