More than 9,000,000 people have voted in Texas, already surpassing the entirety of the ballots cast in 2016. That had been an all-time record. The turnout is just one sign that this election is different, and Julián Castro is thankful to be home to witness it.
In past campaigns, it would have been assumed that the former Housing and Urban Development secretary would have been dispatched to swing states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin, where his appeal with Latinx voters and those primarily focused on social-justice issues might help the Democratic ticket.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump tried out a new pitch on the suburbanites he is desperate to win back over before November: Stick with me, and the Poors won’t be allowed to bother you! In an announcement on Twitter addressed to “all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream,” the president declared he has ended the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule.

In the immediate wake of someone suspending her or his campaign, both our elected officials and we in the press who cover them focus too acutely on the question of endorsements. It is an ugly, gossipy trend that distorts the very purpose of public service, placing more emphasis on what candidates can do for one another rather than what they can do for the voters. With the urgency of full bladders, pundits immediately pivot to asking who the fallen contender will support — and fans of the frontrunners go online to make their voices heard.

It shouldn’t be difficult to determine who is winning this. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate who has shown the ability thus far to form any kind of firm base within the Democratic electorate — younger voters who may find him personally popular even more so than a platform that Republicans are counting on to scare a more moderate American electorate. That last part may be why political intelligentsia seems to be having a devil of a time with this race. The way that CNN and MSNBC covered Sanders’s narrow New Hampshire primary win,...

Sen. Cory Booker (D-n.J.) on Monday suspended his run for the Democratic presidential nomination, days after failing to qualify for a debate that his campaign had hoped would bolster his campaign’s struggling finances.
Booker follows former candidate Julián Castro, who also left the race this month, leaving the Democratic field with two candidates of color: former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick and Andrew Yang.

Former Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro announced Monday that he is endorsing Elizabeth Warren in the race he pulled out of just days ago.
Though 15 Democrats have already dropped out of the 2020 primary, Castro, the most recent to do so, is one of only two to have formally endorsed another candidate to land the nomination. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) endorsed former vice president Joe Biden in November. But Castro’s announcement Monday morning was more than a simple vote of confidence. Pour out a 40 for Beto O’Rourke and Kamala Harris, two “top tier” candidates who recently exited the race for the Democratic Party nomination. The debate tonight in Los Angeles, the sixth in this interminable, gaffe-filled, weirdly depressing primary battle, has been pared down to seven qualifying combatants.

Washington — It’s not uncommon for struggling presidential candidates to blast their party’s nominating process, especially the decision to let Iowa and New Hampshire host the all-important opening two contests of the primary campaign.

Last night’s Democratic debate, which saw frontrunner Elizabeth Warren come under attack from all sides, drew around 8.3 million total viewers on CNN.
That viewership figure is down 46% on the first NBC debate which was watched by 15.3 million viewers, and also on the two previous CNN debates which garnered 10.7 million (down 22%) and 9 million (down 8%) respectively. None of the Democratic debates so far in this cycle have come near to the 24 million viewership figure posted by Donald Trump’s first debate on Fox News in August of 2015. According to CNN, 9.2 million viewers live streamed the debate in total on both the network’s and NY Times’ digital platforms.
Warren was joined on stage last night by fellow frontrunners Vermont senator Bernie Sanders and former vice president Joe Biden, as well as nine other potential Democratic candidates: New Jersey senator Cory Booker, mayor of South Bend, Ind., Pete Buttigieg, former housing and urban development secretary Julián Castro,...

The fourth Democratic debate was dangerously close to being substantive. For almost three (3!) hours, the twelve (12!) candidates onstage tackled questions on foreign policy, reproductive rights, health care, gun control, big tech, and the opioid crisis. While the other debates — and indeed, the entire 2016 presidential campaign — have been marked by meme-able moments and gaffes, the one co-hosted tonight by CNN and “The New York Times” largely featured candidates who know where they stand and what they wanted to say in order to distinguish themselves from the crowd. For every confusing diversion or stumble, there were far more answers with some actual meat to them. It was, to be frank, a surprising deviation from the norm, which has so often seen moderators and candidates alike fighting to create the splashiest moments possible.
And then, with 15 minutes to go, co-moderator Anderson Cooper turned to the final, most ridiculous question of the evening: “Last week,...

Saturday Night Live took on CNN’s Lgbtq Town Hall, with a little help from Emmy-winning Pose actor Billy Porter.
Porter served as the ultra-dramatic announcer on SNL’s version of the Democratic town hall, which took place Thursday in Los Angeles.

Redd’s Booker assured the audience he’s familiar with Lgbtq issues, thanks to his actress girlfriend, Rosario Dawson.

After the casting controversy leading into its current season, “Saturday Night Live” is now under fire for a lack of Latinx casting that was made even more apparent during its 45th season premiere.
The issue was highlighted by one of the series’ political sketches that excluded Democratic presidential candidates Julián Castro. The sketch in question featured impressions of nine of the other candidates (out of the full 19), with two of the candidates played by celebrity guests instead of “SNL” cast members.
But the Castro omission was especially glaring as the sketch took up over 10 minutes of airtime, featured “SNL” co-head writer Colin Jost in a rare sketch appearance, and included a Marianne Williamson impression (from “SNL” newcomer Chloe Fineman), despite Williamson failing to qualify for the last Democratic presidential candidate debate.

The California Senator altered her schedule less than a day after CNN reported that she had refuse their invitation to participate in the September 4th event, citing a scheduling conflict. “We were happy to change our schedule to accommodate such a critical conversation,” said Harris communications director Lily Adams. “As Senator Harris has said, this is a climate...

Julián Castro will participate in the Democratic primary’s climate town hall next month after meeting host CNN’s polling threshold, the campaign’s national press secretary confirmed to Rolling Stone Tuesday.
CNN had previously stated that it would limit invitations to those candidates who had received at least 2 percent in at least four polls approved by the Democratic National Committee conducted between June 28 and August 21.
“As local and federal executive, Julián hasn’t just talked about the importance of solving the climate crisis — he’s got the record to prove his commitment,...

Julián Castro plans a rude interruption of Donald Trump’s executive time Wednesday. The Democratic White House hopeful has bought a half-minute of ad time on Potus’ go-to appointment show, Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends, to deliver a personal message to the president.
“As we saw in El Paso,” the former Hud secretary says on camera, “Americans were killed because you stoked the fire of racists. Innocent people were shot down because they look different from you because they look like me. They look like my family.”
Watch the ad below.
Castro is among a number of Dem presidentlal candidates who have labeled Trump a “racist” and/or “white supremascist” since the August 3 shooting in which 22 innocents lost their lives. Castro doesn’t go there in the ad but makes it clear that he believes the president’s rhetoric inspired the shooter.

Immigration officials on Wednesday raided a series of food-processing plants in Mississippi, arresting 680 suspected undocumented immigrants. It could be the biggest workplace immigration enforcement action in a single state, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s acting director Matthew Albence told the Associated Press. Children of the immigrants were left behind without their parents, left to rely on friends and strangers for food and shelter.
The raids targeted workers at seven Mississippi chicken processing plants. Around 600 Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials surrounded the plants to prevent anyone from escaping. Some...

President Trump and Republicans have blamed the media, the internet, video games, mental health, and a lack of prayer in schools for the mass shooting epidemic in the United States, which was brought back into focus over the weekend after shootings in El Paso and Dayton that left at least 31 dead. White nationalism has also been rightly pinpointed by some members of the Gop, but Trump’s name has been left out of their vague denunciations of the hatred fueling these massacres. Democrats haven’t been so vague. Several of...

The second night of the Democratic primary debates in Michigan paid off with a genuine fight night, featuring Joe Biden against all comers.
For more than three hours Wednesday night at the Fox Theater in Detroit, Democratic rivals took jabs at the former vice president, seeking to portray the the 2020 frontrunner as a relic of the party’s past who’s unfit to carry its banner today. Kamala Harris swung at him on health care. Julián Castro and Bill de Blasio hit him over Obama-era deportations. Cory Booker connected on criminal justice reform.

Sen. Cory Booker was in the middle of his opening statement at tonight’s Democratic debate when he was interrupted by protesters’ shouts from the audience. The lawmaker from New Jersey stopped speaking, and CNN and its moderators waited for the heckling to play out.
At least three protesters yelled slogans including “Fire Pantaleo!” before being escorted out of the hall in Detroit. The reference apparently was to Daniel Pantaleo, the NYPD officer who put a chokehold on Eric Garner that was caught on video and led to Garner repeating “I can’t breathe!” several times. A Staten Island grand jury this month declined to indict Pantaleo over the incident.
Booker was calling out Donald Trump’s takedown of Baltimore and its people and politicians when the yells began. Moderator Jake Tapper asked Booker to “Stand by, senator” and he agreed. The lawmaker stood quietly at the podium for 25 seconds...

At the Democratic primary debate on Tuesday, Marianne Williamson had a blunt response when asked to explain the $500 million she argues should be paid as reparations to the descendants of slaves: “Anything less than $100 billion is an insult.”
Asked by moderator Don Lemon why she says $500 billion was an appropriate amount, Williamson said “It’s $200 to $500 billion dollars payment of a debt that is owed. That is what reparations is.”
“It is time for us to simply realize that … when it comes to the economic gap between blacks and whites in America, it does come from a great injustice that has never been dealt with,” she continued. Then, referencing “40 acres and a mule,” Williamson added, “If you did the math today, it would be trillions of dollars, and I believe that anything less than $100 billion is an insult.” Watch the clip above.

Washington — The conventional wisdom that followed the first Democratic presidential debates looked something like this:
Kamala Harris: dominant. Julián Castro: ascendant. Joe Biden: eviscerated.
Harris and Castro were deemed the victors of round one of the DNC Battle Royale 2019. Biden was the clear loser and he knew it: The former vice president waved the white flag onstage in Miami when he cut himself off mid-answer and told the moderators, “My time is up. I’m sorry.”

ABC News confirmed Texas Southern University in Houston will host the third Democratic debate in September, as the field starts to shrink from its original cavalcade of two dozen hopefuls.
ABC and Univision are hosting the debate on September 12 and, if necessary, September 13.
In announcing the host location on Sunday morning, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos noted that the Democratic National Committee’s qualification bar is rising for candidates, which will help winnow the field.
The polling threshold for the September debates doubles from the previous level of 1% to 2%, and the number of individual donors also doubles from 65,000 to 130,000. Eight candidates — Joe Biden, Beto O’Rourke, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Julián Castro and Andrew Yang — are currently above the donor threshold, Stephanopoulos said. Just six — Biden, O’Rourke, Buttigieg, Harris, Warren and Sanders — have hit both the donor and polling targets, though there are still several weeks...

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris will have the opportunity to square off again in the second debate among Democratic hopefuls vying for their party’s nomination in the 2020 presidential election
CNN, which will broadcast the next round of debates on July 30 and 31, televised a draw Thursday night that decided the date on which each of 20 different candidates will appear – a unique and unorthodox maneuver in the world of political news coverage.
The results also determined that Senator Bernie Sanders would have a chance to debate directly with Senator Elizabeth Warren on the first night of the debates.
Harris and Biden clashed in the last debate event, televised over two nights by NBCUniversal via NBC, Telemundo and MSNBC. During the second night, Harris appeared to gain traction by criticizing Biden’s efforts to work with politicians who held segregationist views. Biden was attempting to show how he...

The fields for the second Democratic debates are set. Twenty candidates have qualified for the event, which will be broadcast live from Detroit. Given the size of the field, the debates will be split across two nights.
Ten presidential candidates will debate on Tuesday, July 30. The remaining ten will debate on Wednesday, July 31 at 8pm Et on CNN.
CNN held three separate draws on Thursday night, ensuring candidates with similar levels of support in qualifying polls were spread out across both nights. The first debates, held in Miami, were criticized as uneven, with four of the top five candidates sharing the stage on the second night.

Updated with podium positions: Call it The Rematch. CNN picked the field for the July 30 and 31 Democratic debates tonight, and former Vice President Joe Biden will get another chance to square off against Sen. Kamala Harris of California, this time on Night 2 of Round 2. The duo, who famously clashed during the first debates last month, will stand side by side this time.
As for the two other leading candidates, Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts will face off on Night 1.
In an election cycle that features a remarkable amount of diversity among the candidate, it’s notable that the entire field of the July 30 first debate is made up of white candidates.
The 20 Dems will square off in the cycle’s second pair of 10-person debates in two weeks, and CNN’s unique on-air lottery of sorts determined who will be taking their talents where and when.
