ABC has confirmed that Abbott Elementary Season 1 will debut on October 1 alongside the next season of Shifting Gears, another hit sitcom starring Tim Allen. Abbott Elementary sits at a nearly perfect 99% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even general audiences are high on the series, rating it a strong 89% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Abbott Elementary is a workplace comedy centered around a group of dedicated teachers at a Philadelphia public school. Despite the odds being constantly stacked against them, they are committed to helping get the most out of their students and helping them succeed.

Abbott Elementary was written and created for television by Quinta Brunson, who also stars in the lead role of Janine Teagues in the hit ABC sitcom.

TV’s best scribes are getting their moment in the spotlight: The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for the 2025 Writers Guild Awards ceremony, which is to be held Saturday, Feb. 15.

The TV nominees include a number of first-timers, including the final season of Paramount+’s supernatural drama Evil, HBO’s Batman spinoff The Penguin and freshman series like Prime Video’s Fallout and FX’s Shōgun. Of course, usual suspects like Hacks, The Bear and Abbott Elementary are all present and accounted for as well.

The ABC comedy, which typically runs 22 half-hour blocks, was truncated as a result of the writers and actors strikes (the February premiere timing also conflicted with the series’ history of following the school year in real time). “I knew right away I didn’t want to hold anything for season four, and that I wanted to protect the finale ending we had planned,” says Brunson. Point Grey Pictures is teaming with the “Abbott Elementary” star and her production company Fifth Chance on the upcoming comedy feature “Par for the Course” for Universal Pictures. She is set to star in the film alongside “Everything Everywhere All At Once” standout Stephanie Hsu.

Brunson will also co-write alongside “Abbott Elementary” scribe Justin Tan, who will also direct the project in his feature debut. Alex McAtee is set to produce on behalf of Point Grey under its first-look deal with Universal.

Point Grey was founded in 2011 by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and is behind projects including “Joy Ride,” “Neighbors” and “Miller’s Girl.” Most recently, Point Grey released the fourth season of Prime Video’s “The Boys” and “Sausage Party: Foodtopia.”

As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.

Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

AMC’s veteran drama series “Better Call Saul” is sharing the spotlight with newcomers FX’s “The Bear” and Apple TV+’s “Severance,” as all three shows scored three nominations for this year’s WGA Awards. Other new series nabbing multiple nominations include Apple TV+’s “Bad Sisters,” ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” and Disney+’s “Andor,” with HBO Max’s “Hacks” also garnering two mentions.

The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) announced nominees for TV and news categories on Wednesday morning. Winners will be awarded at the guilds’ annual ceremony on March 5.

The Writers Guild of America has revealed the nominations for its 75th anniversary WGA Awards in the television, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional categories. The full list is below.

Nominees in the marquee TV categories include reigning Comedy Series champ Hacks, but 2022’s Drama Series winner Succession isn’t in play this year. In fact, only Yellowjackets makes a return trip to the nominees circle in that category. It will go up against the category’s newcomers: Andor, Better Call Saul, The Crown and Severance.

Creator Quinta Brunson is revitalizing the broadcast sitcom with her teacher-centric story, “Abbott Elementary,” on ABC. It’s a ratings hit, and also dominates social media Tuesday evenings since its January premiere, a rarity for a traditional sitcom these days. This past Tuesday’s episode saw Abbott’s newest educator, Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams), learn about loosening up to help his students find the fun in learning.
