Art Directors Guild Awards nominations include ‘Wicked,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and more Oscar hopefuls
Image
The Art Directors Guild Awards has announced the nominations for its 29th annual kudos, and all five of this year’s predicted production design Oscar nominees received bids from the guild on Thursday: The Brutalist and Gladiator II in the period race, Dune: Part Two and Wicked in the fantasy category, and Conclave in the contemporary contest.

This group, which celebrates excellence in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, and music videos, has an impressive track record for previewing the Academy Awards. Over the past 28 years, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories, including last year when Poor Things prevailed at both events.

This year’s honors will be distributed on Feb. 15 during a ceremony hosted by comedian and actress Rachael Harris at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. (See the complete list of names below.) Final voting for guild members opens on Jan.

Adg Awards 2025: ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ Earn Nominations
Image
The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Production design is all about worldbuilding, and so it’s fitting that the nominees are spread out by the kinds of worlds production designers are asked to create and the demands of their setting. The feature film nominee categories are amongst period settings, contemporary settings, and fantasy settings and the television shows are divided further by format between single-camera hourlong, half-hour, multicamera series, limited series, and TV movie, among others.

But the nominees themselves align with IndieWire’s predicted frontrunners for the Oscar category. “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked,” among others, are nominated in the fantasy feature film category, while “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” each received nominations in period feature and contemporary feature, respectively. On the TV side, “Shōgun” continues its conquest of guild nominations with one for period single-camera series, but “Squid Game,...

“Wicked,” “Dune: Part 2,” “Conclave,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Nosferatu” and “The Brutalist” were among the film nominees for the 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, which the Art Directors Guild announced on Thursday. Notably, Steve McQueen’s WWII drama “Blitz” and Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas fantasia “Maria” were shut out.

On the TV side, “Shōgun,” naturally, scored yet another nomination to add to its Mt. Everest of accolades. “Pachinko,” “Bridgerton,” “Fallout” “Slow Horses,” “Squid Game,” “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” were also nominated.

“This year’s nominees showcase the incredible artistry and vision that define our craft and our industry,” award show producers Michael Allen Glover, Adg, and Megan Elizabeth Bell, Adg, said in a joint statement. “We’re thrilled to bring the Guild together to celebrate the achievements of these incredible Production Designers and their Art Departments.”

‘The Substance,’ ‘Conclave’ and ‘Wicked’ Lead Art Directors Guild Nominations
Image
“The Substance,” “Conclave” and “Wicked” are among the films nominated by the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) for its 28th Excellence in Production Design Awards in motion pictures, television, commercial and music video categories.

The Adg divides live-action features into three categories: period feature film, fantasy feature film and contemporary feature film. “A Complete Unknown,” “The Brutalist,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu” and “Saturday Night” were nominated in the period feature film category. In the fantasy film category, “Alien: Romulus, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, “Dune: Part Two,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Wicked” all landed nods. “Civil War,” Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “The Substance” and “Twisters” earned contemporary film nominations.

While it’s difficult to use the Adg winners as a precursor to the Academy Awards, last year’s winner “Poor Things” (Shona Heath and James Price) went on to win the Oscar. Previously, 2023 winners “Dune” (Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos) also won the Oscar for production design.

‘You Should Have Left’ Review: Kevin Bacon Is Terrorized in Creepy Haunted House Horror Story with a Twist
Image
There’s something wrong with Theo Conroy. A meditation app can’t quiet his mind, which is prone to jealous fantasies and out-there suspicions. Small annoyances rattle him. People look at him askance, his name jarring loose uncomfortable memories, even for seeming strangers. His wife’s success pisses him off. Even his kid knows that something is not quite right with her “Baba.” A vacation can’t solve everything, but it certainly can’t hurt. Or can it? Stepping back from the blockbusters on which he’s built his career — for better and worse — “Jurassic Park” writer and “Mortdecai” director David Koepp turns his attention to the small-scale chills of “You Should Have Left,”

The chiller reunites Koepp with his “Stir of Echoes” star Kevin Bacon (who also produced the film), hinting at the pair’s apparent affection for horror offerings with natty psychological twists. In search of a little peace of mind,...
