Over the course of the last two decades, Shane Carruth has made two movies, and it remains unclear whether he’ll make another one. Last fall, while promoting his performance in “The Dead Center,” the “Primer” and “Upstream Color” director said that he was finished with filmmaking after he finished up one more project. The reclusive sci-fi director may be serious, but in the meantime, he’s finding a way to pass the torch. As executive producer on “The Wanting Mare,” the distinctive fantasy-drama that marks the directorial debut of Nicholas Ashe Batemen, Carruth is lending his name to raise the profile of a filmmaker who — like Carruth himself with his two movies — has crafted an otherworldly vision on his own terms.
The movie unfolds across decades, as several generations of women in a dark, dystopian world grapple with the same dream of a magical age that predates their existence.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week, IndieWire published our list of the 100 Best Movies of the 2010s.
Of course, any list of 100 movies barely scratches the surface of a decade that saw the release of thousands (and thousands), and a ton of special films — especially of the contested or obscure varieties — didn’t make the cut. And, so with that in mind, we asked our panel of film critics to pick the one overlooked film of the past 10 years that they most hope people will find, rediscover, or reconsider in the future.

There’s always been an abundance of beautifully insightful films that miss the general audience conversation but few have been as audaciously assured as director Jennifer Phang’s 2015 feature “Advantageous.

The Russo Brothers are commanding the entertainment news today and it's not because of their involvement with another Marvel movie. In addition to word that they will be producing Evan Glodell's next movie Canary the brothers, through their company Agbo, have teamed up with Neon to purchase distribution rights to Assassination Nation.
The thriller, written and directed by actor-writer-director Sam Levinson, stars an all-star cast of rising female talent including Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef and Bella Thorne as a group of teenagers on the hunt, with weapons ranging from guns to baseball bats, for a hacker who has been circulating compromising photos and texts.

Exclusive: The Russo Brothers Studio has stepped up to finance Canary, the next feature from Evan Glodell, who directed the 2011 Sundance breakout film Bellflower. Six weeks ago, Evan Glodell was in a funk. He’d made his filmmaking debut six years ago with micro-budget breakout “Bellflower,” in which he’d starred, written, directed, and produced through Coatwolf, his filmmaking collective. That film exploded at Sundance 2011, but now it seemed like all of his projects were stalled, again.
He wondered if he should have turned down an offer to wrangle VFX for Benh Zeitlin’s “Wendy,” another follow-up to a Sundance hit (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”) made by a filmmaking collective; unlike his Coatwolf projects, that one was successfully winding its way to completion.
Then suddenly, everything turned around. Coatwolf’s second film, “Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins” produced, co-written, and starring Glodell, is close to locked and is ready for CAA to screen for buyers.
Their third, “Canary,” written, directed, produced, and starring Glodell, will hit the Cannes market to seek...

Premiering six years ago, almost to this date, at the Sundance Film Festival, Bellflower emerged as one of the most impressive indie features of 2011. A rough-and-tumble, low-budget production that was refreshingly difficult to categorize, we’ve been waiting to see what director-writer-producer-editor-star Evan Glodell would be taking on next. Arriving this summer is the latest film from Glodell’s Coatwolf Productions, Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins, and now the first teaser has arrived.
While it’s not directed by Glodell — that duty goes to Jonathan Keevil (composer, editor, and producer on Bellflower) — he stars in the film, which takes a more genre approach than their last project. Upping their scale, it’s set in a futuristic world where our titular heroes must save the planet. With impressive visuals, mixing very different styles, we’re looking forward to this videogame-influenced adventure.

Way back in the simpler days of 2011, writer-director-actor Evan Glodell made a big splash with his debut feature, Bellflower. The pre-apocalyptic romance felt both familiar (it’s an extended Mad Max riff) and totally new (but have you ever seen an extended Mad Max homage that was also a bittersweet breakup story?), and heralded Glodell as a scrappy […]

Six years after making their mark at Sundance with “Bellflower,” the Coatwolf Productions team is back with the video game–inspired “Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins.” Written/directed by Jonathan Keevil and starring Evan Glodell (who wrote, directed and starred in “Bellflower”), the film looks even more manic than its predecessor. Watch the film’s first trailer below.

"What do we do?" "We go in, and we kill everyone." Coatwolf Productions has unveiled a teaser trailer for their new film, titled Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins. This low-budget Mad Max-esque action thriller is inspired by side-scrolling video games and 1980's action. Coatwolf founder Evan Glodell plays Chuck Hank, who teams up with the San Diego Twins (Jonathan Keevil & Tyler Dawson) to stop The Syndicate, an evil gang bent on world domination that summons a secret weapon from the heavens. The cast includes David Arquette, Troian Bellisario, Michael Pare, Olivia Taylor Dudley, along with Mma fighters Don Frye and Josh Barnett. This looks stylish and crazy fun, it might actually be worth catching. Here's the teaser trailer for Jonathan Keevil's Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins, from YouTube: A turf war has been raging in Oldtown for generations. Actor-director Evan Glodell made an enormous splash with his indie darling Bellflower. Essentially a millennial romantic drama with a Mad Max car fetish, Bellflower marked the arrival not just of Glodell but of the fiercely independent company / collective that he was a part of, Coatwolf. Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. Park City might get a blast of 1979′s The Warriors if filmmaker Jonathan Keevil and his clan manage to do what Bellflower (2011′s Next section selected item) did before them. Once again featuring Tyler Dawson and Evan Glodell, Keevil’s Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins appears to be unapologetically trashy, but kudos are in order for spending a good amount of time finessing the film’s final cut, for adding value supporting players in David Arquette and Paz de la Huerta, and for making a kick ass crowdfunding plea (see below).

Title: The Signal Director: Will Eubank Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Beau Knapp, Olivia Cooke, Laurence Fishburne, Lin Shaye Several years ago, in 2011, multi-hyphenate director Evan Glodell and a group of collaborators with whom he shared a long list of short-form collaborations made a weird little film, saturated in feverish tones, called “Bellflower.” Whatever one thought of that movie itself as a finished narrative product, its construction was so audacious and of a piece as to almost take one’s breath away. “The Signal,” directed by Will Eubank, is an extraordinarily different work, but one every bit as charged and shot through with cool assurance and technical savvy. Last Saturday, the Austin Film Society successfully hosted the first ever Sundance #ArtistServices Workshop in Austin. #ArtistServices is an organization operated by the Sundance Institute that provides distribution support and assistance to Sundance alumni. They also work to educate up-and-coming filmmakers about all the latest trends in marketing and distribution, and have previously held workshops in Park City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.
Three Sundance staff members (Joseph Beyer, Chris Horton and Missy Laney) were on hand for Saturday's event and had clearly worked closely with Afs to organize a well-run and enlightening collection of panels and conversation. In her opening salvo, Afs Associate Artistic Director Holly Herrick emphasized the workshop aspect of the day and encouraged attendees to ask questions at any point.

Vincent Grashaw produced, edited and acted in SXSW's 2010 hit "Bellflower," written, directed and starring his fellow Coatwolf Productions pal Evan Glodell. Now he's back in Austin with "Coldwater," his feature directorial debut, which he also co-wrote. The testosterone-fueled drama centers on a teenage boy (Ryan Gosling look-a-like Pj Boudousque) sent to a privately run reform boot camp for misbehaving youth. Things go downhill fast--and with a lot of violence. Grashaw uses an unknown cast to weave the tale, bringing attention to real-life cases that inspired the story of guidance gone wrong. Sophia Savage: How did making 'Coldwater' compare with 'Bellflower'? Vincent Grashaw: 'Bellflower' and 'Coldwater' were two different beasts. 'Bellflower' was an example of getting a film made at all costs, with zero money. I threw myself into something that took almost three years of my life to complete. It forced us to think out of the box…...

Vincent Grashaw made a gasoline-scented splash by both producing and appearing in 2011′s indie drama Bellflower, a twisted tale of Mad Max fandom and curdled love. Now Grashaw is making his directorial debut with the SXSW-screening Coldwater, which details a teenage boy’s struggle for survival at a juvenile reform facility in the wilderness.
“I played on a tournament hockey team growing up,” Grashaw told EW last year. “I remember one day our goalie wasn’t at practice and we all wondered what had happened. Turned out his parents sent him to a private juvenile program in the middle of nowhere.

In hindsight, the timing could not have been better. On the 5th of November 2011, the Us indie film Bellflower marked its UK premiere at the annual Leeds International Film Festival. As the closing credits rolled, the audience stumbled out of the dark and into the cold. It was misty. The air smelled of gunpowder. It was, of course, Bonfire Night, and the perfect environment for Bellflower.
With its incredible finale still thundering in my mind, I immediately anticipated its general release date. The bad news is I’m still waiting. A film festival breakthrough on both sides of the pond, it enjoyed a limited run in Us cinemas but – barring that fortnight in November – is yet to grace the screens of our green and pleasant land. Fortunately, the film can look forward to a resurgence on Netflix (although, again, this is Us only) and DVD (with Region 1 available now and...

This week’s spotlighted project is sure to be a success. In less than three days of being announced, Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins has already raised more than half of its $60,000 goal. And there are 42 days left. No surprise, though, because who doesn’t want to see the next movie from the team that brought us Bellflower? I don’t even know if I need to say anything more. If you’ve seen Bellflower and you love it (some of you don’t, which is unfortunate), you’ll want to see what other insanity comes out of the minds of its makers. Once again there will be awesome cars, flamethrowers, but there will also be a lot of fights, a speed boat sequence and other great action sequences — if they can afford it all. When it comes to video game-themed movies that aren't actually based on any existing video games, the list is pretty short. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Wreck-It Ralph, and the Sundance stinker Virtually Heroes come to mind, and it looks as if that niche subgenre is about to receive one more entry.
The Playlist reports that the team behind the apocalyptic love story Bellflower is teaming up for a follow-up feature called Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins that's inspired by side scrolling video games from the 1980s. Here's the official synopsis:
A turf war has been raging in Oldtown for generations. On one side, The Syndicate – an evil gang of crank-head misfits, who has been set on muscling the San Diego family out of the parcel of land they own in the center of town. On the other side, the San Diego family: Tony and Johnny – twin brothers,...

The Micro-Indie That Could, Bellflower was one of the most fiercely debated movies of last year; but one of my personal favourites. Love it or hate it, you have to admire the incredible risks by first time writer-producer-director-editor and star Evan Glodell, who tells a completely unorthodox story in an altogether reckless manner. Fans of the film will be happy to know, the filmmakers are back with their sophomore effort, and they are looking to you for additional funding.
Coatwolf Productions, the team behind Bellflower, has officially launched the kick-off crowdfunding campaign for their forthcoming release, Chuck Hank and The San Diego Twins – a project described as “influenced heavily by ‘80s action films and side-scrolling fighting games.” The film is written and directed by Jonathan Keevil (the man who scored, produced and edited Bellflower), and stars the Bellflower duo of Tyler Dawson and Evan Glodell. Evan Glodell and his "Bellflower" team are back in the saddle for "Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins." The multi-hyphenate is handing over directing reins to Jonathan Keevil (who scored "Bellflower") and is serving as producer and actor. They are also reuniting with "Bellflower" star Tyler Dawson and Dp Joel Hodge. They are using IndieGoGo to raise funds; the promo video takes place in a car, just like our interview with them. The film aims to be a surrealist action/drama set unabashedly in the '80s. You can watch the promo below. "Bellflower" is an example of a filmmaking team that were introduced at Sundance. The film's producer Vincent Grashaw went on to write and direct "Coldwater," which is debuting at SXSW next month. Glodell is still working on writing his next film. Another breakout from Sundance 2011 was Brit Marling, co-writer, producer and star of both "Another Earth" (director Mike.

One of the most memorably twisted indie films of recent times was undoubtedly 2011′s micro-budgeted Bellflower — an apocalyptically minded tale of Mad Max fandom and a love affair which goes horribly awry. The Sundance-screened movie was made by a collective of filmmakers known as Coatwolf, whose membership includes writer-director Evan Glodell and producer-composer Jonathan Keevil. Today, the Coatwolf crew announced that their next project, the Keevil-directed action movie Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins, will feature molotov cocktails, a high-speed car chase, and “a massive bone-crushing 30 person street brawl.” The (fairly reasonable) catch? You have to help pay for it.

No one saw Evan Glodell and his Coatwolf team coming when their debut film Bellflower took Sundance by storm a few years back. That ain't gonna happen a second time. The rumbling sound you're hearing right now is the groundswell of support brewing for the crowdfunding campaign that Coatwolf just launched for their second feature, Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins. Produced by Glodell and directed by Bellflower producer/composer/editor Jonathan Keevil, the film is described by Coatwolf as a "surrealist action/drama influenced heavily by '80s action films and side-scrolling fighting games like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon." Sounds like a riot. Both Glodell and Tyler Dawson return in front of the camera as well. Here's the official synopsis: A turf war has...

Grimy, intimate and often certifiably insane, if you’ve seen the 2011 indie hit Bellflower, than you at least have an opinion of it. We more or less fell in love with Evan Glodell‘s twisted, homespun creation and now after a lengthy worldwide festival tour and distribution by Oscilloscope Laboratories, we’ve finally got word on what the filmmakers are [...]...

While the Sundance Film Festival has been criticized as being more star-driven in recent years, it's easy to forget that for true blue indie films, recognition and reaction from Park City can make a career (or two). And writer/director Evan Glodell is certainly testament to that as he arrived at the fest in 2011 with his distinctly homemade, undeniably unique and apocalyptic "Bellflower." The movie created a stir that followed it to festivals around the world including stops at SXSW, Fantastia, Sitges, Leeds and many more. Oscilloscope Laboratories picked up and released the movie to solid critical praise, undoubtedly opening many doors for Glodell and the team behind the movie. But for their next effort, they are once again keeping things close to home. Coatwolf Productions, the team behind "Bellflower," today officially launched the kick-off crowdfunding campaign for their forthcoming release, "Chuck Hank and The San Diego Twins." Written and.

We half expected to see Bellflower director Evan Glodell climb out of the Medusa-like car in the opening of the teaser for Aussie indie zombie flick Wyrmwood. The Mad Max references are clear as day in the post-apocalyptic movie, which is currently looking for funding on Indiegogo. The filmmakers are a third of the way through their "retina-blistering" version of "Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead," and they hope it will become the next piece of Oz-ploitation cult cinema that fans will be talking about for years to come. Dustups in a desert (or deserted) landscape? Check. Ravenous zombies? Check. Homemade body armor and a crazy car? Check. The action and gore levels seem about right, and we're curious to see more Wyrmwood. If you're inclined to support a...

This week on DVD/Blu-ray: One of the two films that put Brit Marling on the map; one of the best love stories ever committed to celluloid; Luc Besson's deeply felt epic on Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi; a horror film courtesy of Joe Dante; and the latest from the director of "Buried." #1. "Sound of My Voice" The 2011 Sundance Film Festival served as a springboard for a remarkable number of writer/directors. Mike Cahill of "Another Earth," Dee Rees of "Pariah," Sean Durkin of "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Evan Glodell of "Bellflower," all made strong impressions, garnering distribution deals and a wealth of buzz. But only Zal Batmanglij, the man behind "Sound of My Voice" (co-written by star Brit Marling, who was also in Park City with "Another Earth"), saw his film sell to Fox Searchlight and (more importantly) top Indiewire's 2011 mid-year critic's poll. To celebrate their 13th anniversary this year, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival is going green!
No, they’re not out to save the kookaburra or anything. Instead, they’re hosting a special tribute to the New Irish Low Budget Cinema, featuring two films by acclaimed filmmaker Ivan Kavanagh, plus work by Colin Downey, Gary Kenneally and Gerard Lough.
Muff will host a repeat screening of Kavanagh’s celebrated thriller Tin Can Man — it previously screened at Muff in 2008 — as well as his latest film, The Fading Light. The three other Irish films screening all fall into the horror/thriller genres, from Downey’s The Looking Glass to Kenneally’s Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and Lough’s trilogy-ending The Shaken 3. And, in addition, the entire fest kicks off with the opening night Irish thriller Charlie Casanova by Terry McMahon.

While traveling the world making deals on the 2011 Sundance hit he produced, Evan Glodell's "Bellflower," Vincent Grashaw felt as if he had made ten years' worth of film world contacts. So once he finished his "Bellflower" tour, he decided it was finally time to make a film out of the script he had been working on for more than a decade. "Coldwater" is about a juvenile rehabilitation center where delinquents go to wilderness boot camp while a war veteran leads a cadre of counselors in disciplining them. Grashaw wrote "Coldwater" with a writing partner, but the seeds of the story were planted when he was 18. "The kids on my hockey team reminded me of the characters in the movie 'Kids,'" Grashaw told Indiewire. "One day, our goalie was gone -- he was sent away to one of these places by his family. When he got out, he never played with us again.

With all of its griminess – both literally and figuratively – the ultra low-budget indie drama Bellflower seemed to get a mixed reception at Sundance last year. But its fervent and few fans stuck by its side as it went on to get a theatrical release the following summer and gained some traction. After an extended internal battle to decide if I actually liked what I saw, I came out on the positive side and can’t wait to see what’s in the future for this filmmaker gang known as Coatwolf.
We finally got some news today, but not regarding Bellflower director Evan Glodell. Instead, producer Vincent Grashaw has lined up his directorial debut, Variety reports. He’s set to helm a drama, in a similar indie vein, titled Coldwater. Co-written with Mark Penney, the film is described as revealed “the stark realities behind juvenile rehabilitation in the U.S.” The...

Last’s year most buzzed about indie flick, Bellflower, introduced us to a whole new cadre of up-and-coming talent, including writer and director Evan Glodell and his co-stars Tyler Dawson and Jessie Wiseman, but there was another essential driving force behind the production – producer Vincent Grashaw. If you’re familiar with Bellflower, you’re likely also familiar with the hands-on nature of the production, one that entailed that just about everyone involved had to do more than just their standard job description. Grashaw was one of those people, and he and Glodell were even nominated for a John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards in reflection of that. Like Glodell, Grashaw has done a number of different projects in front of and behind the camera – from acting to directing to writing, even editing – and he’s now lined up to make his feature directorial debut with Coldwater. According to Variety, Grashaw...

Vincent Grashaw, producer of the acclaimed 2011 indie drama Bellflower, will make his directorial debut with the movie Coldwater. The film, which Grashaw cowrote with Mark Penney, concerns a teenage boy’s struggle for survival inside a wilderness bootcamp.
Coldwater is a labor of love for Grashaw who has been working on the project for 13 years. He penned the first draft of the script back in 1999, when he was just 18. “I played on a tournament hockey team growing up,” Grashaw tells EW. “I remember one day our goalie wasn’t at practice and we all wondered what had happened. It is unsurprising that on the day we lost Adam Yauch to cancer, the Beastie Boy is being remembered mainly for his musical achievements. But over the last decade, Yauch also made a significant contribution to the film world both as a director — overseeing the 2006 Beastie Boys concert film Awesome; I F—in’ Shot That and the 2008 basketball documentary Gunnin’ for That #1 Spot — and as the co-founder of the film company Oscilloscope Pictures.

With the sad news today of Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch's passing (at the tragically early age of 47), we couldn't help but think of the man known as McA and Nathanial Hörnblowér's other legacy: as founder of independent film label Oscilloscope Laboratories. Oscilloscope started out as a recording studio, but began its foray into film in 2008 after distributing Yauch's directorial film debut - a documentary about high school basketball players - Gunnin' For That #1 Spot. The company has since gone on to release countless critically lauded documentaries and features, among them Kelly Reichardt's Wendy and Lucy (2008), Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), Evan Glodell's Bellflower (2011) and Lynne Ramsay's We Need...

Adam Yauch, founding Beastie Boys member, has passed away after a battle with cancer. Yauch was obviously known for his work in music, but he was also heavily involved with the production of independent films. Yauch, co-founder of Oscilloscope Laboratories, helped distribute films like, "Exit Through the Gift Shop," "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and "Bellflower," the 2011 festival sensation directed by Evan Glodell.
Following the passing of Yauch, the Huffington Post spoke to an emotional Glodell about Yauch's absolute devotion to getting "Bellflower" distributed. (And how Yauch used his Beatie Boys cred to pull some strings for the musical rights.)
Around the office, everyone feels blindsided. Do you know more about his condition than we did?
I mean, not a whole lot. I knew he was sick, but I thought he was getting better.
How passionate about film was Adam?
Oh, extremely. I had never been through this process before.
