Many of his early films were lost in a flood in November of 1981. Four of his films were saved because prints were on deposit at the time with Filmmakers Coop in New York. There followed a period during which he concentrated on graphic arts and music composition, only sporadically venturing into film and video. He returned gradually to film production in 2002.

Was hired to direct Crossing the Enemy: The Identity Crisis (2012) but after directing the feature, he was denied the opportunity to edit the film. After seeing the first cut edited by Executive Producer Tabatha A Tower he requested that his name be removed from the release print, and a pseudonym, Brian Eip, be used in its place. Brian Eip is an anagram of Brainpie, from the name of Devault's production company Brainpie Media Productions.

A self-proclaimed animation junkie, when he writes he often names his characters after cartoon characters. He also occasionally uses names of actors he has worked with on previous projects.
