Directors Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson and Guy Maddin’s dark comedy Rumours portrays the situation of the inner workings of Western leadership in a time of crisis as a farcical satire, as comfortable played out on screen as perhaps on stage. As consistently sharp and witty as the dialogue is from its hapless leaders procrastinating over a joint statement of collective action in the middle of a German forest, it also is sobering, thought-provoking and timely in current unsettled times globally. The latter forever plays on the mind, even when presented with surreal moments that include the discovery of a giant live brain parked in the undergrowth.

Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?
Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race, it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.
For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.
If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that,...

Guy Maddin didn’t know he was even on Cate Blanchett‘s radar until he saw her pick his film “My Winnipeg” out of the Criterion Closet back in 2022.
“It was a manipulative move. It was a cry for help!” Blanchett joked to IndieWire (and her peers) on the rooftop of the Jw Marriott on the Cannes Croisette back in May when their debut collaboration, “Rumours,” first premiered. She was joined on that day by Maddin and his co-directors, Evan and Galen Johnson, who’ve been chugging away with the singularly absurdist Canadian auteur on short films since 2015 and the feature “The Forbidden Room” in 2016. Their latest, “Rumours,” is a satirical slice of weirdness about seven nimwit world leaders who gather at a fictional G7 conference to draft a vaguely reassuring statement about an unnamed international crisis. Blanchett plays Hilda Orlmann, the Chancellor of Germany, channeling Angela Merkel in a blond bob and European faux-steeliness.

The first big laugh in Rumours hits before the opening credits have even finished rolling: “The producers would like to thank the G7 leaders for their support and consultation during the making of this movie.” As political bloggers, chronic doomscrollers and any conspiracy theorist with access to the internet will tell you, the “Group of Seven” is an annual summit in which selected world-power presidents and prime ministers discuss global issues and cross-governmental solutions. The national leaders of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan and Italy have...

In the opening scene of the Rumours red band trailer, an archeologist unearths an Iron Age corpse, mummified with its severed penis hanging from its neck. As the summit host and German representative Hilda Orlmann, played by Cate Blanchett, describes the bog body, the G7 leaders in attendance can’t help but wince and give distasteful stares, with one global leader calling it “gruesome.” Following the ceremony, representatives of the world’s wealthiest democracies are stranded in the woods and chased by ancient bodies in a conference gone horribly wrong.

"A black storm comes." Bleecker Street has revealed the full trailer for Rumours, an extra weird & wacky dark comedy about politics from the filmmakers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson. This first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to mostly mixed reviews from critics, it burns out pretty quickly after a hilarious start. In times of global crisis, the brightest and biggest brains of the free world gather to provide leadership. The "wildly entertaining" Rumours film is an apocalyptic horror-comedy about how dumb politicians really are. The leaders of seven wealthy democracies come together during a G7 summit in Germany. But they end up getting lost in the woods when everyone else suddenly disappears and they can't where to go, facing danger as they attempt to find their way out. The ensemble cast of politicians features Cate Blanchett (Germany), Roy Dupuis (Canada), Nikki Amuka-Bird (UK), Charles Dance...

Captain America: Brave New World Funko Pops Reveal Closer Look At New Falcon And Villainous Red Hulk
Captain America: Brave New World was supposed to be released this year, but like many movies, it got caught up in the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes that lasted for several months in 2023.
Not helping matters is the fact Marvel Studios decided the movie needed extensive reshoots which are believed to have reshaped much of the story and action scenes, adding and removing certain characters.
All this chaos has seen Happy Meal toys arrive in McDonald's close to a year before Captain America: Brave New World's theatrical release and we now have a first look at some upcoming Funko Pops.
As you can see, we're getting Sam Wilson/Captain America, Joaquin Torres/The Falcon, President Ross, and the formidable Red Hulk. There are no major surprises here, especially as Red Hulk looks exactly like you'd probably expect (it's a shame there are no flames as that would have confirmed one of...

If you’re not already watching Shōgun on FX (or FX on Hulu), what are you even doing? The 2024 Emmy Awards aired last night on Sunday, Sept. 15, and the historical drama won big!
Shōgun created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. The series stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu, Takehiro Hira, and others. One thing to love about Shōgun is its authenticity as it features a mostly Japanese cast and Japanese language dialogue.
The story follows the journeys of two men: John Blackthorne, an English sailor who is known as a risk-taker, and Lord Toranaga, a member of the five Council of Five Elders ruling Japan.
The series first premiered on FX on Hulu and FX, and was set to be a miniseries, which means no second season was in the plans. However, due to its popularity,...

FX’s and Hulu’s Shōgun, which is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, became a huge series. The series ended relatively recently, and while early rumors suggested that a second season would not be made due to the first season adapting the whole book, we received confirmation that a second and third season are in the works currently, promising a bright future for the series.
We have recently reported how the series won a record-breaking 14 Creative Arts Emmys (out of 17 nominations), and how – with 25 nominations in total – it was the favorite to win big at the main ceremony as well. Baby Reindeer conquered the miniseries category, The Bear won big in the comedy section and…

“Shōgun” is the new Emmy standard.
The FX drama extended its record for most Emmys won by a series in a single year at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards by picking up four more wins, bringing its total to a staggering 18. “Shōgun” already made history last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys when it collected 14 awards, easily surpassing the previous record for a drama series set in 2015 and 2019 by “Game of Thrones,” when it won 12. The HBO limited series “John Adams” took home 13 Emmys in 2008 and held first place for the TV show — comedy, drama or limited series — with the biggest haul…until “Shōgun” breezed onto the scene.
During the main ceremony, “Shōgun” picked up several top awards, though not nearly as many or as quickly and steadily as some had predicted. After a slow start, it won Emmys for drama series, lead drama actress for Anna Sawai, lead drama...

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

“The Bear” cleaned up at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, just not in the final category as so many experts predicted. And “Shōgun” proved more vulnerable than expected, not winning a single Emmy until two hours and 20 minutes into the show.
Below, the 7 biggest unexpected moments of the night.
Billy Crudup Beats Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira from “Shōgun”
Yes, Crudup won this category in 2020 for “The Morning Show,” but that was in the pre-“Shōgun” times. And considering Crudup was up against two other “Morning Show” cast members, Mark Duplass and Jon Hamm, it seemed likely that that voters would split the vote among the three of them, opening up a potential path to victory for Tadanobu Asano from “Shōgun” — or his cast mate Takehiro Hira. In the end, voters more likely split the “Shōgun” vote, clearing the way for Crudup’s second win.

Shōgun proved its staying power on Sunday night with a record-breaking 18 Emmy Award wins, including one for Outstanding Drama Series.
A year after the category featured frequently nominated, multi-season stalwarts like Succession, The Crown, Better Call Saul, and Yellowjackets, only one of this year’s nominees — The Crown — had been up for Outstanding Drama Series before. The rest of the nominated dramas were either coming off an acclaimed first season (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Fallout, 3 Body Solution, and Shōgun) or finally getting some well-earned Emmy recognition (Slow Horses, The Gilded Age,...

Anna Sawai made history after winning the Emmy for best drama actress for Shogun during Sunday night’s 2024 Emmys.
With her first Emmy win, Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win in the lead actress in a drama series category at the Emmys.
Sawai was nominated alongside Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).
When taking the stage, a visibly emotional Sawai quipped, “I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today.”
She began her speech by thanking the Academy for nominating her alongside people she “grew up watching and love.” She went on to thank the FX team for “believing in our story” as well as co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo for giving her “the role of a lifetime” as Lady Mariko.

As Dan Levy said, the 76th Annual Emmy Awards were “Broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.”
If you don’t have streaming and if you didn’t watch one of the 33 shows nominated out of the 516 scripted programs available in the US, you probably didn’t think much of the show.
But we’re still here rounding up the winners, so you didn’t have to watch. You’re welcome! Maybe the award winners will inspire you to watch a show you never have before.

A night of nostalgia, a Baby Reindeer sweep and an incredible launching pad for the upcoming seasons of The Bear and Shōgun made up the 76th annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday.
While the Family Levy didn’t exactly rock the L.A.’s Peacock Theater as the first father-and-son hosts, breakout moments came courtesy of TV’s old guard and Jodie Foster’s first Emmy win.
Here are some of the great moments, surprises and snubs from tonight’s telecast on ABC.
Great moment when Eugene Levy made a crack about The Bear‘s record wins in the comedy category and how, well, it’s hardly a knee-slapping series. “In the true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes.”

The star of FX’s historical epic Shōgun just made some history of her own.
Anna Sawai won the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series at Sunday’s ceremony, making her the first Japanese actress to win an Emmy. She was in tears as she accepted the award, but she admitted in her speech: “I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today.” She thanked the Shōgun cast and crew and her mother, offering a tribute to “the women who expect nothing and continue to be an example for everyone.”

“Shōgun” star Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Sawai was honored for her captivating leading performance as Lady Toda Mariko in the acclaimed FX series.
Her historic Emmy win comes six years after Sandra Oh became the first Asian performer to be nominated in the lead drama actress category in 2018 for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Oh was nominated three more times for the same role, but never won.
Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
Sawai, who was born in New Zealand to Japanese parents and is mainly based in Japan, was considered the frontrunner to win her category, which had heavy competition.

Hiroyuki Sanada became the second Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in FX’s “Shōgun” at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. The prolific Japanese actor was recognized for his portrayal of Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the first season of the drama series.
With the acting Emmy win — Sanada’s first of his six decade–long career — he follows in the footsteps of Lee Jung-jae’s history-making accomplishment in 2022 when Lee became the first Asian actor to win the lead drama actor Emmy for Netflix’s non-English series “Squid Game.”

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.

“Shōgun” has gone from critical darling to Emmys juggernaut, but plenty may not have taken the dive into this period Japanese world just yet. The long-in-the-works show takes place in 1600 Japan and ostensibly follows a marooned Englishman who finds himself caught in a growing civil war amongst Japanese power players, but the rich story unfolds in surprising ways. Hiroyuki Sanada leads the cast as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and also serves as producer, shepherding the project to ensure historical and cultural accuracy throughout. The result is one of the most thrilling, emotional and engrossing shows of the year.
Here’s everything you need to know about where to watch “Shogun.”
Where is “Shōgun” streaming?
“Shōgun” is an FX original series but it aired on both FX and Hulu, and all 10 episodes of the first season are currently streaming on Hulu. You’ll also find it on Disney+ through the Hulu integrated app.

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.

When Kieran Culkin won the 2023 Best Drama Actor Emmy for his 20-minute and 44-second performance in the “Church and State” episode of “Succession,” he had a lower amount of physical screen time than all but one of his challengers. Now, five of the category’s newest candidates fall far below his total, with none even cracking 30 minutes as four comfortably did last year.
The six current drama actor contenders asked voters to consider their work in episodes in which they appear for an average of 14 minutes and 34 seconds (or 31.67% of the total running time). This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.

In terms of physical time on screen, Matthew Macfadyen’s back-to-back Emmy-winning performances in the “All the Bells Say” and “Tailgate Party” episodes of “Succession” are separated by a margin of six minutes and 44 seconds. His lauded turns are respectively shorter and longer than the average one vying for the 2024 Best Drama Supporting Actor prize, with his first aligning more closely with the new lineup’s actual screen time mean.
The seven current drama supporting actor contenders submitted performances that last for an average of 10 minutes and 13 seconds, or 20.01% of their single episodes. This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. We thought there was a chance “Shōgun” would break the “Game of Thrones” record for the most Emmy wins for a drama in a single season (12), or maybe even the “John Adams” record for the most wins for any program in a single year (13). But few could have anticipated that it would break those records in just one night at the Creative Arts Awards. It collected a remarkable 14 trophies on Sunday night, and it has the chance for several more on September 15. Chief among those is Best Drama Series, where it’s — no surprise here — the overwhelming favorite to win based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.

Political horror comedy Rumours is coming this October and a weird first trailer has been released to herald the film’s arrival.
Here’s one of the more bizarre teaser trailers we’ve seen in a while, kicking off the promotional campaign for Rumours, an upcoming political horror comedy that is set to release in October. That places the film’s launch just before the US presidential elections although whether the film is going to satirise that particular political showdown, is as yet unclear.
In fact, the whole teaser trailer is rather unclear. It’s a series non-sequiturs, the unconnected and random nature of it giving the whole thing a rather random, surreal quality. At one point a huge brain appears. What we do know is this: Rumours focuses on ‘the leaders of the seven nations comprising the G7, who meet for their annual summit but get lost in the...
