Broadway Musical ‘Smash’ Closing After Tonys Loss
Image
Smash will play its final Broadway performance on June 22.

The musical, which is based on an NBC television series, is cutting its open-ended run at the Imperial Theatre short after opening April 10. Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron and Steven Spielberg are producers on the musical, which features direction by Susan Stroman and a score by Hairspray’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The meta show follows a group of Broadway producers, writers and actors trying to put on a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe, but running into several obstacles, with some of the songs adapted from the television series and some written specifically for the production.

This is the first show to post a closing notice after the Tony Awards took place June 8. Smash was nominated for two Tony Awards, for best featured actor for Brooks Ashmanskas and for best choreography, but did not take home any awards. The show also...

‘Smash’ Sets Broadway Closing After Tony Award Shut-Out
Image
Smash has become the first Broadway show to close following a 2025 Tony Award shut out. The musical will play its final performance on Sunday, June 22, after 32 previews and 84 regular performances at the Imperial Theatre.

Nominated for two Tonys – Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Brookes Ashmanskas) and Best Choreography (Joshua Bergasse) – the musical took home no awards. In the week leading up to the June 8 Tony ceremony, Smash filled only 66% of available seats, with a gross of $656,161.

Producers Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron and Steven Spielberg made the closing announcement today.

The musical opened to mixed, at best, reviews, with many critics taking issue with the convoluted, only modestly funny book and lackluster score. The musical tells the story of the making of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe.

Directed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman (The Producers), Smash stars Robyn Hurder as “Ivy,” Ashmanskas as “Nigel,...

Anjelica Huston Reflects on Starring on ‘Smash’: “I Didn’t Feel Very Prized in That Role”
Image
Anjelica Huston may have starred on the NBC musical series Smash, but she admits she didn’t feel happy on the show.

In an interview with People magazine, the actress reflected on starring alongside Katherine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Debra Messing and Jack Davenport on the TV show.

Huston played Broadway producer Eileen Rand during Smash‘s two seasons. The series was cancelled in 2013.

“I wasn’t very happy when I was on that show,” Huston told the publication. “I was living in New York and I wasn’t very happy living in New York for the obvious reasons. It was a cold winter, and I didn’t feel very prized in that role. I was a bit depressed by it. It was hard really; I didn’t really have a good time making it.”

While on the show Huston was also still mourning the loss of her husband of 16 years,...

‘Smash’ reviews: Long-awaited Broadway musical ‘undeniably thrilling,’ but lost in ‘flat sitcom rhythms’
Image
More than a decade after it debuted on NBC, Smash has finally arrived on Broadway. Fans of the ill-fated television series that ran for two seasons may not recognize the plot of this new musical mounting, though. Gone is the central conceit of two actresses (played by Megan Hilty and Katherine McPhee) competing for the role of Marilyn Monroe in the musical Bombshell, though many of the songs written for the show are staged in the Broadway production. In its place is a lead actress (Robyn Hurder) who causes chaos when she decides to attempt Method acting to better inhabit the iconic movie star.

Smash opened on April 10 at the Imperial Theatre under the direction of The Producers legend Susan Stroman. It features those aforementioned original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, book by Rick Elice and Bob Martin and stars a who's-who of Broadway stalwarts, including Brooks Ashmanskas as Bombshell's director,...

‘Smash’ Broadway Review: Scratching A 13-Year Itch
Image
When the Broadway-themed drama Smash began its two-season run on NBC in 2012, the entire theater industry, it seemed then, was entranced. The lingo, the faces, the concerns – all seemed, if not entirely authentic, then at least clever enough to create some backstage buzz. Even with the series’ quick decline in quality and ratings, some sort of stage adaptation came to seem inevitable.

Thirteen years later, Smash The Musical arrives on Broadway with some of the most talented creatives and actors working today. More inspired by than based on, more fan fiction or parody than homage, the production opening tonight at the Imperial Theatre is more oddity than anything else.

Possibly too dissimilar in detail and tone from the series to please diehard fans – and they must be out there somewhere – yet relying on a nostalgia, however newly minted, that likely won’t exist in the general population, Smash...

‘Smash’ Exclusive First Look: NBC’s Cult Favorite Hits Broadway With ‘So Many Twists, Turns and Surprises’
Image
It’s a Broadway smash!

It, of course, refers to “Bombshell,” the fictional musical-within-a-musical at the center of “Smash,” a new stage adaptation of the beloved cult favorite, much hate-watched TV series that ran for two seasons on NBC from 2012-2013. Variety has an exclusive preview of the meta backstage comedy, which begins preview performances on March 11 ahead of opening night on April 10 at the Imperial Theatre.

Like the television series, created by Theresa Rebeck and described by Vulture as “one of the messiest shows to air on network television,” the stage version follows the process of mounting “Bombshell,” a jaunty musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. In the first-look image, set outside the fictional show’s Broadway house, a brightly lit marquee boasts such raves as “Amazing!” “Stunning” “Amazingly Stunning!” At the center of it all is Marilyn, wearing the iconic white dress from “The Seven Year Itch,...

The 10 Best Zombie TV Shows Ranked
Image
There are so many TV shows about or involving zombies that it could almost become a genre in and of itself, and that's proven even further by the best zombie series available to stream. Zombie TV shows are, at the least, a sub-genre of dramas, thrillers, post-apocalyptic shows, and sometimes even comedies. The concept of zombies – undead former humans roaming around with the singular mission of finding human flesh to feast on – has been approached from every angle imaginable in the past few decades, and they are only getting better.

The Walking Dead kickstarted the idea of zombies on TV and more recently, the release of The Last of Us saw HBO create one of the best adaptations of a video game, but a show that helped revitalize zombie shows with its huge scope, incredible storytelling, and cinematic quality. It elevated the genre more than any zombie show since The Walking Dead premiered.

‘High School Musical,’ ‘Little Mermaid’ Stars Perform for Disney’s Throwback Concerts at Hollywood Bowl
Image
Disney took a look back at its work from decades past with a pair of throwback concerts at the Hollywood Bowl over the weekend.

Last week, the union, which represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theater, voted to authorize a strike against The Broadway League if ongoing negotiations fail. Equity is currently in the...

‘Smash’ Broadway Musical Takes a Step From Screen to Stage With Industry Readings Starring Robyn Hurder, Kerry Butler (Exclusive)
Image
“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.

Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”

While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...

Disney's Hercules Musical Review: I Won't Say I'm In Love, But There's Potential
Image
Twenty years after the fan-favorite Disney Renaissance film debuted in 1997, legendary composer Alan Menken revealed that he was working on a stage adaptation of "Hercules," the tale of a young man on his road to becoming a hero and finding out where he belongs in the world. Reunited with lyricist David Zippel, the Disney Legend created a number of all-new songs to compliment a book by Kristoffer Diaz and Robert Horn for the latest musical from the House of Mouse.

A few years later in 2019, the production made its world premiere at the Delacorte Theater in New York City's Central Park with a stellar cast that featured Jelani Alladin, who originated the role of Kristoff on stage in "Frozen," as Hercules, Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart of "Aladdin" on Broadway as Phil, star of NBC's "Smash" Krysta Rodriguez as Meg, and, instead of revisiting the character that he...

‘The Collaboration’ Broadway Review: Warhol & Basquiat Paint By Numbers In Artless Bio-Play
Paul Bettany at an event for Uncle Frank (2020)
The wig gives it away, otherwise we’d be hard-pressed to immediately – or even slowly – recognize Paul Bettany’s fast-talking, extroverted and inquisitive artist character in Anthony McCarten’s The Collaboration as that historic icon of cryptic, mumbled monosyllables Andy Warhol.

Unfortunately, Bettany isn’t the only thing that feels smudged in this ’80s-set paint-by-numbers and highly fictionalized dual bio-play about Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, opening tonight in a Manhattan Theatre Club production at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway.

Directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and inspired by the real life 1984 painting collaboration of the aging (at least in terms of artistic relevance) Warhol and the soaring Basquiat – a project presented so much more convincingly and movingly in the 1996 film Basquiat, starring Jeffrey Wright and, in the definitive performance of Warhol, David Bowie, who haunts this play like a shadow – The Collaboration is an oddly lifeless endeavor, a failure in...

10 Halloween Showtunes Perfect For Musical Theatre Lovers, According To Reddit
Image
It's nearly Halloween, which means it's time for musical fans to bring out their toilet paper and water guns for the perfect Rocky Horror Picture Show experience. To get ready, they might look forward to other ghoulish songs that get them in the holiday spirit. There tends to be a significant overlap between those who love musicals and those who love the spooky season, so it's no wonder that haunting musicals like Sweeney Todd and Little Shop of Horrors are common October favorites. However, these popular musicals can get old when they're all fans have to listen to, year after year.

With that in mind, Redditor Nalkarj went on a hunt for less-common Halloween show tunes to get into the right mood. There have been musicals on nearly any subject a person could think of, so surely there are enough Halloween-related songs to put together an interesting playlist. For background...

2022 Emmy nominations ballot: See all 48 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘Adventures in Christmasing’ to ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas’
Image
The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 48 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12; last year, only 41 TV movies were submitted.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.
