Soccer Aid for Unicef 2024, broadcast live from Stamford Bridge, London, last week has raised £15 million, for Unicef’s vital work helping give children around the world happy, healthy, and play-filled childhoods.

Thanks to the generous UK public, Unicef UK supporters, ITV1, Itvx and Stv viewers, this year’s amount sees the current total, raised since 2006 – when Unicef UK Ambassador Robbie Williams founded the concept – hit a record fundraising milestone of over £106 million for children worldwide. This year, with thanks to the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, every donation made up to £4 million was doubled.

The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out Stamford Bridge stadium in London – returning for the third time in Soccer Aid for Unicef history and welcoming back over 40,000 fans. Soccer Aid for Unicef 2023, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV1, Stv and Itvx last week from Old Trafford, Manchester, has raised £14.6 million for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the happy, healthy, play-filled childhoods they are entitled to.

Thanks to the generous support of the UK public, Unicef UK supporters, ITV1, Stv and Itvx viewers, this year’s amount brings the current total raised to date, since Soccer Aid for Unicef was founded by Unicef UK Ambassador Robbie Williams in 2006, to over £90 million for children worldwide.

The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out Old Trafford stadium in Manchester – welcoming back over 63,000 fans to the same venue that hosted the very first Soccer Aid for Unicef match in 2006. Although released in the USA on August 14, the sci-fi drama District 9 is only on its second weekend here in the UK.

Having been away on two holidays in the past few weeks, I missed the press screening and have just had chance to see this film, hence this slightly belated review.

But I'm determined to write about it here on The Geek Files because I want to recommend this as a must-see piece of cinema and one of the best films this year.

Drama, suspense, humour, action, intelligence, social observation, sci-fi, relatable themes, and layers of meaning that point a knowing, accusing finger at the inhumanity of man. It's all in there.

A new sci-fi thriller movie entitled "District 9", is set to hit the theaters this weekend. Distributed by TriStar Pictures (Sony), it stars : Sharlto Copley, and David James The movie trailer (below) looks pretty interesting. The movie is about aliens who arrived to Earth about 28 years ago,and humans were waiting for them to attack or to get huge advances in technology. Neither of those things happened because the aliens were refugees,and the last survivors of their home world. As the world argued over what to do with them, they were put in a makeshift home over in South Africa called "District 9." Eventually control over the aliens was contracted out to a private company who were uninterested in the alien's well being.

A new behind the scenes featurette for District 9, the Neill Blomkamp-directed, Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi flick, has been released online. It opens August 14 and stars Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope, Vanessa Haywood and William Allen Young. The only thing we’ve seen of the Peter Jackson-produced “District 9″ so far has been trying to sell us the viral side of the movie. It’s all very clever and cute, but it’s about time we saw some real plot from this movie, and this latest trailer does just that. Three new images from Neill Blomkamp’s South African sci-fi drama “District 9″, which is quite the intriguing movie. As to the execution, well, that remains to be seen. But from everything I’ve seen of it, it sure looks like it has the potential to be good, or at the very least, something very different in sci-fi fiction. Being that it’s been a while since we’ve gotten something different, I think we should definitely give the film a shot.
