The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for a third season. Prime Video has confirmed the series’ renewal; season three production is underway.

Rumors of a third season were first discussed in December 2022. Those behind the series say they have a five-year plan for the fantasy series. Season two premiered in August 2024.

The second season of Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power came to an end this week, and the finale seemed to leave little doubt as to the identity of the "Dark Wizard" played by Game of Thrones alum Ciarán Hinds.

However, all may not be as it seems when it comes to this mysterious and very powerful character.

We know that this blatantly evil sorcerer is an "Istar," and it was generally assumed that he must be Sarauman. Granted, it would be a pretty major change to the lore if this character "broke bad" prior to the events of Tolkien's trilogy, but so would the introduction of another Istari who was never mentioned in the saga at all.

This led to speculation that Hinds might be playing either Alatar or Pallando, the "Blue Wizards" who are never really discussed in any great detail in The Lord of the Rings...

Prime Video has already released a brief promo for this Thursday's season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but an extended version has now been shared online which features quite a bit of new footage.

It's not the best quality, but the video shows more of the fierce battle between Galadriel and Sauron that was teased in the first trailer. The Dark Lord is still in his Annatar form here - but as we've already seen, this makes him no less powerful.

We also have another shot of the Balrog, who was first awakened from his long slumber in the season 2 finale. The fiery demon will be unleashed from his cavern deep beneath Moria when King Durin refuses to listen to his son and digs far too deeply into the mountain.

When Nori (Markella Kavanaugh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) get separated from their "Istar" friend after being whisked away by a sandstorm he caused (he still doesn't quite have a grasp of his powers), they encounter a group of larger Halflings who call themselves Stoors (Smeagol/Gollum is believed to have been a Stoorish Hobbit). After some initial hostilities, the Harfoots attempt to better explain who they were travelling with.

After describing the Stranger as "a giant" and "bigger than an Elf," Harfoot leader Gundabel sarcastically interrupts with, "oh, so he's a great big grand-elf?"

Prime Video (via Nerdist.com) has released the first clip from tomorrow's fourth episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and it introduces a character fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's work have been waiting to see brought to life on screen for a very long time.

In the clip, we see The Stranger get himself into a spot of bother when he attempts to pull branch from a tree to fashion his wizard's staff. In a moment that recalls Merry and Pippin falling foul to Old Man Willow in the book, the Stranger is trapped and consumed by the tree until old Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear) comes to the rescue.

The first three episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are now streaming on Prime Video, and the premiere wastes little time in taking us back to the Dawn of the Second Age to reveal the shocking origin of Sauron.

The first episode begins by introducing Sauron in his original form as a Maia spirit made flesh (played Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden) shortly after the defeat of his master, Morgoth.

Sauron gives a speech to a group of Orcs, attempting to convince them to embrace him as their new Dark Lord. However, Adar - now played by Sam Hazeldine - doesn't believe his would-be ruler has his "children's" best interests at heart, and instigates an uprising which results in Sauron's "death."

Though Sauron's spirit appears to leave his body, his blood flows into the earth, and the shape-shifting villain is eventually able to take the form of.

"Eldest, that's what I am... Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn... He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - before the Dark Lord came from Outside."

We recently got confirmation that a fan-favorite character from J.R.R. Of course, any Tolkien fan would almost certainly have been aware that Isildur - the future King of Gondor who ultimately cuts the One Ring from Sauron's hand - wasn't really dead, but his father Elendil and the rest of his people believe he is.

In the clip, we see Isildur and a new character, Estrid, stop to help what appears to be a group of travellers in need before being ambushed by Wild Men. Things look bleak for Isildur, but elven archer Arondir comes to the rescue by unleashing a flurry of arrows into the bandits.

Of course, we now know that the Dark Lord had been hiding in plain sight as Halbrand all along, and season 2 will focus on the "Giver of Girts" - who has now taken his Elven Annatar form in an effort to hide out in Eregion - befriending Celebrimbor and aiding him in the making of the Nine (for mortal men doomed to die) and Seven Rings (for the Dwarf Lords in their halls of stone) of power.

Exclusive: Prime Video is planning another big splash for its hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power at San Diego Comic-Con.

This year at Sdcc, ahead of the series’ Season 2 premiere on August 29, the streamer will host an exclusive press and influencer reception by invitation only on Thursday, July 25, in San Diego. It will be followed by The Rings of Power panel in Hall H on Friday from 11:05 a.m.-12:15 p.m. featuring the series’ showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay as well as cast giving fans a inside look at Season 2 in Middle-earth.

Afterward, at 1:45 p.m. at Venue 808 in San Diego, a fan meet-and-greet with cast will be held in conjunction with the official Lord of the Rings fan site TORn (TheOneRing.net). On display will be a curated collection of Season 2’s costumes and props.

We recently learned that Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear) will be introduced during season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and we now have confirmation that some far more nefarious creatures from the same never-adapted section of The Fellowship of the Ring will also make an appearance when the Prime Video series returns to our screens.

Empire Magazine has shared its Rings of Power season 2 covers along with a new still, and they feature Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charlie Vickers as Sauron (in both his previous Halbrand and new Annatar forms), and a first look at the terrifying Barrow-wights.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's book, the four hobbits encounter these undead horrors and almost come to a nasty end until Bombadil makes the save. We're not sure how they'll factor into the show, but the image suggests that it'll be Galadriel who runs into some eerie glowing fog on the Barrow Downs.

During the first season of Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, we were introduced to a mysterious new villain known as Adar, and the character's backstory turned out to be one of the most intriguing aspects of the show.

"Adar" is the Sindarin word for father, and we'd soon learn that the Orcs saw their leader as more of a paternal figure. J.R.R. Tolkien's original history of Middle Earth claimed that Morgoth captured some Elves right after their "awakening" and used dark magic and other twisted means to create a new form of life that would be loyal only to him.

During a conversation with Galadriel, Adar admits that he was indeed one of the first Elves, or "Moriondor," taken by Melkor and transformed into one of the first Orcs.

Prime Video recently released the first trailer for the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, giving us a glimpse of several new and returning characters who will be back to continue the battle to project Middle-earth from Sauron and his forces this August.

One familiar face was significant by her absence, however, and we now know why.

The first trailer for the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was released online yesterday afternoon, and Prime Video has now followed-up with a special "Look Inside" featurette spotlighting quite a bit of new footage.

The video takes us behind-the-scenes of the sophomore season of the Lotr prequel series, as the main cast members bring us up to speed on their respective characters.

By far the biggest talking point from the trailer is the return of Sauron, who has now taken his Elven "Annatar" form in an effort to hide out in Eregion. If the show follows the lore, the "Giver of Gifts" will befriend Celebrimbor and aid him in the making of the Nine (that were given to men) and Seven Rings (gifted to the Dwarves) of Power.

Prime Video has announced that we will get our first look at some footage from the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power tomorrow when the first teaser trailer is released online.

Production has been underway since late 2022 at Bray Studios, just outside London. Season 1 was shot in New Zealand, but the decision was made to change-up location because The UK is "considered more economical and is also where the company is establishing a multi-show hub."

The first season concluded with the reveal that the seemingly benevolent Halbrand was actually Sauron all along. The Dark Lord offered Galadriel the chance to join him once his ruse was discovered, and when she refused, he fled back to the Southlands (soon to be known as Mordor).

It was also heavily implied that "The Stranger" was really Gandalf, but this is yet to be confirmed by actor Daniel Weyman or the showrunners.

The large cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is getting even bigger. Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, and Tanya Moodie are joining the cast of the Prime Video series in recurring roles. Episodes for season two are now being filmed in the UK.

It’s official: Amazon’s The Rings of Power has started filming its next season.

Production got underway on Monday at the new hub at Bray Studios just outside London.

The news follows the first official Nielsen ratings being released Thursday for the Prime Video series, showing The Rings of Power topped the streaming charts for its debut week with 1.3 billion minutes viewed (likely an Amazon series record given that only two hours were released).

The first season of the show was filmed in New Zealand over an epic stretch of 18 months during the pandemic. For season 2, which will consist of eight episodes, Amazon switched the show’s production to the U.K., which is considered more economical and is also where the company is establishing a multi-show hub.

The Rings of Power is approaching its seventh and penultimate episode of its debut season this week.

Is it just me, or is "The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power" becoming more and more like "Game of Thrones"? From Galadriel's (Morfydd Clark) epic sword training session, to the split-location narratives unfolding at different speeds, to the rising political tensions across Middle-earth, "The Rings of Power" quickly traded the idyllic and enchanting (if also ominous) tone of its first few episodes for something more familiar. This week's episode, "Partings," made the comparison more apparent than ever with a conversation that shed light on some dark political motivations.

Five episodes into "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," we're now officially more than halfway through the deliberately-paced season and many viewers still find themselves struggling with the idea of what an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien should "feel" like. Nobody can ever really define what such a subjective statement actually means, of course, especially since material as well-known as this comes with such a broad range of appeal among so many different demographics. But I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the opening of episode 5, titled "Partings," immediately sets the tone for a far more coherent hour than last week's scattershot episode and lives up to much of what fans would consider quintessential Tolkien.
