Night Shift, from Benjamin China and Paul China, is a horror film about a hotel you don’t want to visit. The Bates Motel and The Overlook Hotel are worse places, but The All Tucked Inn is definitely on my list of Vacation Spots To Be Avoided. Its kitschy name is really the most fun thing about it. The building is worn, the guest rooms are sparse and bedraggled, there are decades-old taxidermied animals everywhere, and you can practically smell the musty order through the screen. And there are rats. It’s safe to say this hotel has seen better days.
That being said, it is absolutely the kind of hotel you don’t mind visiting vicariously through a screen. While you’re snuggled up safe on your rat-free couch, you can enjoy the experience of watching someone else roam the dark hallways and explore the dusty rooms and deal...

Although Phoebe Tonkin was in the 2012 shark thriller Bait and the high profile 2022 flop Babylon, most viewers probably know her from her work in television: she has been on multiple episodes H2O: Just Add Water, Home and Away, The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Westworld, Safe Harbour, and more. I just finished watching a Netflix series she was in, Boy Swallows Universe, which I thought was pretty great. Now Tonkin has the lead role in a thriller called Night Shift, which just received a VOD and limited theatrical release today, courtesy of Quiver Distribution. To help you figure out whether or not Night Shift is a movie you’d like to see, we have a clip and the film’s trailer embedded above.

Before it's time for us to serve up some turkey Stateside, here are my thoughts on two recent indie genre films I’ve had the pleasure of checking out: Megan Freels Johnston’s horror comedy The Ice Cream Truck and Jamie Dagg’s crime thriller Sweet Virginia, featuring Jon Bernthal.
The Ice Cream Truck: Akin to an early Tim Burton-esque take on the horrors of suburbia and adulthood, Johnston’s The Ice Cream Truck is a slightly absurd yet wholly relatable exploration of the anxieties of modern women, particularly those who don’t necessarily fit in with the typical “Bake Sale Moms” out there who always seem to have “it” together, living out their existences happily defined by their roles within their respective households.
In The Ice Cream Truck, we are introduced to Mary (Deanna Russo) who is anything but confident in the woman she has become over the years.

The first trailer for Sweet Virginia takes hostages to a dark place.
You just gotta let it pass through and wait it out, Jon Bernthal advises in the first trailer for the upcoming hostage thriller Sweet Virginia. Director Jamie M. Dagg’s film premiered at the 16th Annual Tribeca Film Festival and is already being compared with the early works of the Coen brothers. The screenplay is written by Paul China and Benjamin China.
Bernthal plays Sam, a former rodeo star who runs a motel on the edge of the wilds of Alaska. He gets friendly with a violent stranger who drifts by named Elwood (Christopher Abbott).
The synopsis reads...
A mysterious stranger sends shockwaves through a close-knit community in this nerve-jangling slice of raw suspense. In the wake of a triple murder that leaves the residents of a remote Alaskan outpost on edge, tightly wound drifter...

Featuring: George Shevtsov and Georgina Haig
Filmmakers Paul and Benjamin China are a filmmaking team of brothers who have stuck to their guns to create a thriller, a movie that has subsequently played all over the world in the festival circuit. Crawl is a well told story that is also visually interesting.
While this particular film was picked up for distribution representation during ScreamFest 2011 in Los Angeles, I wasn’t able to see it until it made its way to Cannes 2012. I worried that I’d be the only one who didn’t get it. Luckily for me, I became part of the Crawl army.
It is important when going into your viewing of Crawl to understand that it isn’t a gory torture porn. Crawl is more of a throwback to horror of old — which, personally, is my favorite type of horror subgenre.

The benchmark for any decent film festival is the level of cinematic diversity it offers. A good mix of entertaining, provocative, intriguing and possibly even perverse selections from around the globe with a few classic retrospectives thrown in for good measure that inform, intrigue, delight, outrage and provoke thoughtful debate is all that one can hope for in a well compiled line-up. Thankfully Brisbane’s 20th anniversary international film festival, which commences on the 3rd November, appears to have delivered that desired ensemble.
While commencing with the Aussie premieres of Joe Cornish’s UK genre-bender Attack the Block and closing with Pedro Almodovar’s psychologically intense genre hybrid The Skin I Live In, and with a few entries bleeding over from this year’s Sydney Film Festival (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Tyrannosaur and Take Shelter amongst others), there’s more than enough fresh material in between to make the trip to another Aussie state worthwhile.

A very intriguing trailer crept its way into the Dread Central offices today, and it's something you really need to check out. It's for an Australian film entitled Crawl, which will be making its world premiere at Screamfest 2011 in Los Angeles in October. Do yourself a favor - read on and check out this twisted, mysterious trailer.
The tiny bit of the Crawl film we see in the trailer has a ton of blood, violence and overall bad intentions. It's got a Tarantino-esque feel to it, even containing the beautiful Georgina Haig, who looks like a young Uma Thurman. Also featured in the film are George Shevtsov and Paul Holmes. Paul China wrote and directed the feature with his twin brother Benjamin China, and Brian Breheny handling the producing duties.
