Some independent filmmakers have an obsession with reaching that 90-minute runtime. The makers don’t care whether the story actually has the substance to reach that industry favorite and standard 90-minute mark. It’s quite visible that Wolf Garden has an idea that it wants to really milk, but there was no point where I thought, ‘the movie just wound up too quickly’. The movie just behaves as a slow burn for the sake of it, when in fact it would have been much more interesting to explore the idea in a straightforward manner. Director Wayne David, who also stars in the film, is adamant about stretching the story to its breaking point, and sadly, the cover of the plot is blown too soon. The film ceases to be a study of the inner turmoil of the main character and becomes a dragging and obfuscating werewolf tale.

A psychological drama set in the British countryside, this psychological thriller takes too long to deliver

You might politely describe this werewolf thriller set in the English countryside, in which the werewolf is kept off-camera, as a slow-burn. A devastating revelation awaits us at the end, but for the first two-ish-thirds of the movie we watch a man in a cottage – sometimes with his girlfriend, sometimes without – looking alarmed and perturbed, possibly having a psychotic breakdown. I have to confess it lost me around the 20-minute mark.

The man is William (played by director Wayne David), who is in possession of a prize more precious than gold: a friend with a cottage in the countryside. William is staying there with his girlfriend Chantelle (Sian Altman), who is in heaven, and wonders aloud if they should relocate. William is less impressed, griping at the quality of the coffee in the village cafe.

Wolf Garden: "William has gone into hiding in the countryside following horrifically violent events. Struggling to come to terms with reality, he flashes between the past and present, and fantasies involving the woman he loves, Chantelle. As his sanity crumbles, he begins to feed an unseen creature locked inside a shed in the woods. Witnessing apparitions of a ghostly visitor, he realises he must kill the creature and discover a terrible truth about Chantelle before the next full moon."

First up, Gravitas Ventures unleashes Wolf Garden via On Demand outlets today (February 28), being described by Gravitas as a “elevated horror picture in the tradition of It Follows.”

Written and Directed by Wayne David, Wolf Garden tells the blood-curdling story of William (Wayne David), a young man who disappears upon experiencing haunting visions of the woman he loves and a mysterious creature in the nearby woods.

Plot: William and Chantelle’s vacation in the countryside goes terribly wrong, leaving Chantelle missing and William hiding in the wilderness, fearing the next full moon.

Review: Chances are that any genre fan who decides to check out the horror movie Wolf Garden (watch it Here) is going to, given the title, expect the film to fit into a certain sub-genre – and since distributor Gravitas Ventures is marketing the film as “An American Werewolf in London meets Vertigo”, I suppose it’s safe to confirm that Wolf Garden is a werewolf movie. Of sorts. It just might be the most economical werewolf movie ever made. Even more so than that Howling movie that primarily seemed like a documentary about a Pioneertown honky-tonk. Don’t go into this one hoping to see much in the way of cool special effects, but do go into it aware that it’s a slow...

In the dead of night in the British countryside, all is still throughout an isolated house. The silence is initially broken by a ticking clock and a dripping tap, before a howling wolf outside stirs William (Wayne David) awake. This sound is followed by a woman crying in his bathroom, yet a look inside shows nobody in there. Star/writer/director/producer David highlights the situation well, as the lead struggles in isolation while haunted by visions of the woman he loves and a mysterious creature nearby.

The title Wolf Garden suggests what creature lurks outside, although the feature takes a different angle by focusing on the ramifications of the unseen terrors, as captured on people’s faces and in their actions. This decision could be due to budgetary constraints, yet it works...
