The Sandman: Netflix Officially Releases Tom Sturridge's "Tempest" Scene From Series Finale - Spoilers
Image
The final episode of The Sandman, "A Tale of Graceful Ends," deals with the fallout of Morpheus' death and the emergence of a new incarnation of Dream of the Endless, with Daniel Hall (Jacob Anderson) struggling to come to terms with his very existence and the rest of The Endless coming together to mourn their departed brother.

Tom Sturridge does appear in one final flashback scene towards the end of the finale, as we see Morpheus pay a visit to William Shakespeare upon the completion of his second commissioned play, The Tempest.

Dream invites the legendary playwright to The Dreaming to share a glass of wine, and we find out why the Prince of Stories made a deal with the then "naff actor" known as Will Shaxberg in the first place. Deep down, Morpheus knew that he could never abandon his responsibilities as Destruction had by leaving "his island," and...

The Sandman Showrunner Reveals That A Batman Cameo In Series Finale Was "Briefly" Considered - Spoilers
Image
Though the connections became more tenuous as the series went on, Neil Gaiman's The Sandman was very much set within the main DC Comics Universe, with appearances from the likes of Martian Manhunter, Mr. Miracle, and even Batman, who showed up at Morpheus' funeral in "The Wake."

A few vague references aside, the Netflix series mostly avoids any direct DC nods, but co-creator/showrunner Allan Heinberg has now revealed that a cameo from Batman was discussed.

“We talked about, ‘Does Robert Pattinson want to come to the funeral?’ Briefly, we did discuss that, but only briefly.”

Getting Pattinson on board would probably have been a mission and a half, but they could have shown the Dark Knight's unmistakable cowl from the back as the mourners are making their way inside the palace.

Speaking of Superman, the bonus episode that's currently streaming, Death: The High Cost of Living, includes...

The Sandman: Netflix Has Released The Series Finale's Cryptic Post-Credits Scene Online - Spoilers
Image
In an unusual move for a Netflix series, the final episode of The Sandman includes a post-credits scene, and it has now been officially released online.

Spoilers follow.

With his realm in danger of being obliterated by the Fates, aka the Furies, aka the Kindly Ones, Morpheus ultimately decides to give his life to save the Dreaming, with Death taking her brother's hand in a flash of light.

When Daniel Hall, the first child conceived in The Dreaming, grows to adulthood in order to fulfil his role as the new Dream Lord, we learn that the character is played by Jacob Anderson.

Are there more stories to tell featuring Daniel? Maybe, but the post-credits sequence is not so much a tease of what's to come as a meditation on Morpheus' arc over the course of the series.

The scene finds the Kindly Ones back at their realm, reading the following...

The Sandman: Netflix Releases First Clip From Death: The High Cost Of Living Bonus Episode
Image
The Sandman has come to an end, but there is still one more story to tell.

The second and final season of Netflix's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed DC Comics series concludes with the death of Morpheus and the emergence of another aspect of Dream of the Endless to take his place. While we may yet see more of Daniel at some point (co-creator Allan Heinberg hasn't ruled out the possibility of a third season), the bonus episode that's set to hit the streamer on July 31 will be based on Death: The High Cost of Living.

This spin-off tale was hinted at in a deleted scene from the first season, when Death tells her little brother Morpheus that she used to take human form once every century in an attempt to remain grounded and in touch with humanity.

In the episode, "The Sound of Her Wings," Death reveals...

Before Fantastic Four, Vanessa Kirby Starred In A Disastrous But Ambitious Sci-Fi Flop
Image
It's not a large role, but Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby played the role of Katharine, the protagonist's best friend, in the Wachowskis' 2015 sci-fi epic "Jupiter Ascending." It really was a small part for Kirby, although her character served a vital entry to the film's central action. For those who haven't seen "Jupiter Ascending," the title character, Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), longs for an escape from her humdrum life as a janitor. She is enamored of the stars, and hopes to earn enough money to buy herself an expensive telescope. The best way Jupiter figures she can get rich quick is by selling her eggs at a clinic. It's a complex process, though, and her friend Katharine agrees to let Jupiter use her name on the intake paperwork.

The trip to the clinic will, rather unexpectedly, lead to an alien abduction (!). Jupiter and Katharine will be knocked out and scanned by...

The Sandman has now come to an end, with the season 2 finale delivering a pretty definitive conclusion to the story. Morpheus may be dead, but Dream of the Endless continues on, and co-creator Allan Heinberg is not completely ruling out the possibility of a third season.

From ‘Oh, Hi!’ & ‘Diciannove’ To ‘Folktales’ & ‘House On Eden’, Indies Saw A Window This Weekend And Grabbed It – Specialty Preview
Image
It’s a big weekend for smaller indie distributors – or at least not the biggest – as they spotted a weekend with nothing new from A24 or Neon and just one major studio opening in what has, and will be, been a crowded summer.

MCU’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the 800-pound gorilla – other studio films “cleared out of the weekend,” says one indie distribution executive. So edgier fare has a better shot. Sony Pictures Classics’ Oh, Hi! and Roadside Attractions’ The Home open on 1,000 screens, IFC’s House on Eden on 600. Magnolia doc Folktales, Oscilloscope’s Diciannove and Greenwich Entertainment’s Shoshana are limited releases, which can always be good counter-programming.

“Often in the summer you are constantly just fighting for screens and looking for whatever weekend you can get the most theaters,” said another exec. Not that it’s a breeze to find space, with tentpole fare...

Shoshana Review — No Spark, No Fire, and a Romance Without Heat Derails Michael Winterbottom’s Period Drama
Image
Shoshana is a gripping, though somewhat limited, film about the British Mandate in Palestine. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, it admirably attempts to parse the complexities of both sides by presenting the conflict through the eyes of the British rulers. However, that perspective risks reducing a weighty historical subject into a genre exercise that lacks nuance.

The film is based on a true story, drawn from the real-life events surrounding a key figure in the Hebrew underground. So why does the titular character of Shoshana take a backseat? The story would have resonated more deeply if it had been told through Shoshana’s perspective, rather than filtered through a British lens.

2 Celebs Fought Over Vanessa Kirby Before She Dated Paul Rabil: Her Dating Life Rumor Explained
Image
Vanessa Kirby is well into her pregnancy, as she and boyfriend Paul Rabil get ready to welcome their first child into the world. However, before she met the retired professional lacrosse player, Kirby was linked to multiple actors at different times, including Douglas Booth and Christian Cooke.

In fact, there was a time when the two actors were rumored to be in a feud with each other over Kirby. Cooke and Kirby were stated to be together from 2009-2011. After they went their separate ways for whatever reason, Kirby began her romantic relationship with Douglas Booth, with whom she starred in the 2011 drama, ‘Great Expectations.’ They reportedly dated from 2012-13.

During this time, both Cooke and Booth were cast in Carlo Carlei’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’, with the latter playing the Romeo to Hailee Steinfeld‘s Juliet. Cooke played the role of Romeo’s loyal friend, Mercutio. Given their link to Kirby,...

The Sandman Concludes On A Bittersweet Note With A Surprise Casting - Check Out A First Look At [Spoiler] Here
Image
The final episodes of The Sandman are now streaming on Netflix, and the series concludes with a faithful adaptation of the longest (and many would say best) storyline from Neil Gaiman's seminal saga, "The Kindly Ones."

Spoilers ahead.

With his realm in danger of being destroyed by the Fates, aka the Furies, aka the Kindly Ones, Morpheus ultimately decides to give his life to save the Dreaming, with Death taking her brother's hand in a flash of light. The Sandman is dead, but another aspect of Dream must replace him: Daniel Hall, a child conceived in The Dreaming.

When the infant Daniel becomes an adult in order to fulfil his role as the new Dream Lord, we learn that the character is played by Jacob Anderson.

"Jacob’s being available was a miracle because I assumed he was busy with Interview with the Vampire," showrunner Allan Heinberg tells THR.

‘Shoshana’ Review: Michael Winterbottom’s Studiously Evenhanded History Lesson
Image
Spanning a tumultuous period of the late 1930s and early ‘40s in the British-administered Palestinian territories that would soon be recognized as the state of Israel, Michael Winterbottom’s Shoshana sheds light on a historical narrative that, despite the contemporary political relevance of its setting, remains relatively obscure. The eponymous character (Irina Starshenbaum) is an office clerk and journalist in Tel Aviv who shares the utopian outlook of her influential father Ber Borochov, co-founder of the socialist Labor Zionism movement. After falling for Tom Wilkin (Douglas Booth), a local British policeman tasked with defending the region from the more violent Zionist faction Lehi and from Arab militias, Shoshana finds her personal feelings and ideological convictions coming into conflict.

The broad sweep of the narrative covers early Jewish settlement of the region, the establishment of the first kibbutzim, terror attacks and reprisals, state violence, and the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe.

In the Vol. 1 finale, Morpheus spilled "Family Blood" when he finally granted his son Orpheus peace centuries after his body was torn to pieces by the Maenads. This act incurs the wrath of The Kindly Ones, who are now within their rights to exact vengeance again the Dream Lord and lay waste to the Dreaming in the process.

One of the most immersive and brilliantly written fantasy shows of recent times has to be Netflix’s The Sandman and while it is coming to an end with its second season because of some behind-the-scenes controversies, fans are still looking forward to the upcoming batch of episodes. The Sandman Dreams Up Rotten Tomatoes Score As First Season 2 Reviews Arrive
Image
The Sandman season 2, Vol. 1 is now streaming on Netflix, and critics have been sharing their verdicts on the first six episodes of what will be our final visit to The Dreaming since the embargo lifted earlier today.

After initially generating a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score when the first few reviews hit, Vol. 1 has now dropped to 75% based on 16 write-ups. That score is likely to fluctuate, but the consensus seems to be that this adaptation of the later storylines from Neil Gaiman's seminal saga doesn't quite match up to the first season.

Mileage is almost certain to vary depending on whether you're a fan of the source material, which some of the more negative reviews pretty much use as the basis of their criticism.

You can have a read through the reviews and reactions at the links below.

‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Review: Netflix Fantasy Braces for a Subversive, Mesmerizing Conclusion
Image
“The Sandman” returns to Netflix for a split second and final season; six episodes debut July 3 and the back six drop later in the month.

This may be a bit frustrating for the bingers out there, but take it from someone who’s seen the first half dozen: they have more than enough profound themes, character developments and batshit oddities to savor and ponder for weeks to come.

Neil Gaiman’s comic book demi-god Morpheus, aka Dream of the Endless, is again played with a somnambulant soulfulness by Tom Sturridge. Having reclaimed his magic accoutrements and mystical Dreaming kingdom after a long imprisonment in Season 1, the master of all our sleeping states now spends much of his time realizing that he’s never been a very good person. In Season 2 we learn how, over millennia, he’s let down siblings, the love of his life, his son and a wife...

The Sandman Season 2, Volume 1 Review — An Enchanting Evolution for the Fantasy Series
Image
Three years is a long gap between the first and second seasons of a show, but season two of Netflix’s The Sandman was plagued with delays, from the SAG/WGA strikes to allegations against its creator. Well worth the wait, The Sandman season 2 offers more of the strange adventures that fans came to love about the show.

The Sandman Season 2, Volume 1 Review

Adapted from the DC Comics that ran from 1989 to 1996, The Sandman follows Dream, one of the Endless and ruler of the Dreaming, as he must reconcile with his past misdeeds to protect his kingdom. Confirmed to be the last season of the show, Netflix and the show’s creators, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg, have promised that this batch of twelve episodes will conclude Dream’s arc. Although this is an incredibly ambitious undertaking (whether out of design or necessity), this first batch of episodes gets off to an encouraging start.

Netflix Canceled the Release of a Gore Vidal Biopic Eight Years Ago — for the Filmmakers, the Story Isn’t Over
Image
In winter 2018, Netflix gave a triumphant report of its fourth quarter earnings from 2017. The streaming giant touted its increased streaming revenue, over 20 million new memberships added, and that the company doubled its worldwide operating income. It mentioned only a minor piece of bad financial news: Netflix took a $39-million loss in unreleased content from the quarter. “Despite this unexpected expense,” the report said, “we slightly exceeded our contribution profit and operating income forecast due to our stronger-than-expected member growth and the timing of international content spend.”

But the report did not draw attention to what that $39 million loss was: the cost of several episodes of “House of Cards” and a film starring Kevin Spacey that Netflix chose not to release in light of of several accusations of sexual misconduct, including one by actor Anthony Rapp that he said occurred when he was 14 and Spacey was 26.

That canceled film is “Gore,...

Netflix Reveals New Look at Game of Thrones' Joffrey Actor in Next Villain Role
Image
Game of Thrones alum Jack Gleeson will soon be back on the small screen. He is playing Puck in the second season of The Sandman, which is due to premiere on Netflix on July 3.

Per SFX Magazine, a new image was released of The Sandman Season 2 featuring Gleeson's Puck alongside Freddie Fox's Loki. The photo showcases a better look at the Gleeson's Puck after a first-look image previously provided a more limited sneak peek, showcasing him from the shoulders up. Whether this villain will be seen by fans as despicable as Gleeson's Game of Thrones character remains to be seen, though showrunner Allan Heinberg has said how he wrote the role of Puck specifically for the Joffrey actor.

"He brings so much depth to that part," Heinberg said, per EW. "He brings sexiness to it and mischief and psychology and heart. I have a tendency to write to the actors playing these parts,...

The Sandman Season 2 Stills Spotlight Jenna Coleman As Johanna Constantine, Freddie Fox As Loki, And More
Image
Netflix released a full trailer for the second and final season of The Sandman yesterday, and the streamer has now shared some new promo stills spotlighting several of the characters we'll meet over the course of the season, along with a few familiar faces.

The images feature Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) reuniting with his former lover Nada (Umulisa Gahiga), who he condemned to Hell when she refused to be his queen; Dream's son Orpheus (Ruairi O'Connor); Fiddler’s Green (Stephen Fry) and Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong); Freddie Fox as an even more conniving and ruthless take on Loki than the McU's version, and Jenna Coleman as the returning Lady Johanna Constantine.

Whether Johanna's modern-day counterpart will drop by remains to be seen. John Constantine only made a single appearance in the comics, but with this being the last season, we have a feeling a few creative liberties might be taken.

The Sandman Season 2 Will Include A Bonus Episode Based On Death: The High Cost Of Living
Image
Netflix recently unveiled the first trailer and release dates for The Sandman season 2, which will be split into two parts. The 6-episode Volume 1 premieres on July 3, and the 5-episode Volume 2 arrives on July 24.

Now, the streamer has officially revealed the titles for each episode, and this final season will include a bonus instalment based on Death: The High Cost of Living.

This spin-off tale was hinted at in a deleted scene from the first season, when Death tells her little brother Morpheus that she used to take human form once every century in an attempt to remain grounded and in touch with humanity.

In the episode, "The Sound of Her Wings," Death reveals that she used to be a lot more, well, grim about her reaping, but an encounter with her human counterpart gave way to her far sunnier disposition.

Netflix has also shared new stills for each of the 12 episodes.

‘The Sandman’: Season 2 Bonus Episode To Drop After Series Finale, Episode Titles Revealed
Image
Surprise! In announcing titles for the 11 episodes from the second and final season of The Sandman, the Netflix fantasy series revealed a bonus standalone episode. It will be released after the previously set drops of Volume 1 (Episodes 1-6) on July 3 and Volume 2 (Episodes 7-11) on July 24.

Episode 11 will still serve as a series finale, bringing Dream’s (Tom Sturridge) story to conclusion. The bonus episode, which will debut a week later, on July 31, follows his sibling Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste).

It is unclear whether it had been crafted with a potential spinoff in mind or just as an extra for fans following the pattern of Season 1, which also had a bonus episode.

Caught in the controversy surrounding sexual assault and misconduct allegations against Neil Gaiman, who co-developed and executive produced the TV series based on his DC comics, The Sandman announced in January that the upcoming second season would be its last.

‘The Sandman’ Was Always Supposed To End With Season 2 Despite "Unfortunate Timing" of Neil Gaiman Allegations
Image
Come July 3, The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 will premiere on Netflix as the adventures of the Dream King continue in what will be part of the last batch of episodes released. Season 2, Volume 2 will release on July 24th to mark the official end of the series. After the show's first season, it was clear that it was a show quite loved by fans, but the streamer wasn't exactly quick to renew. A Season 2 renewal eventually arrived, but earlier this year, it was announced that the show's upcoming episodes would be its last, following series creator Neil Gaiman being accused by several women of sexual assault.

Ahead of the series' return, showrunner Allan Heinberg responded to claims that the show's ending was a result of the allegations made against Gaiman. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heinberg reveals that the decision to end the series with Season 2 was actually made three years ago.

New Romeo & Juliet Movie Debuts With One Of The Lowest Rotten Tomatoes For Shakespearean Love Story
Image
Juliet & Romeo is the latest in Hollywood's history of Shakespearean movie adaptations, with an all-star cast and spectacular optics to draw audiences in. The names attached to Juliet & Romeo that attracted the most attention at the beginning of its marketing campaign were Pitch Perfect's Rebel Wilson as Lady Capulet and Harry Potter's Jason Isaacs as Lord Montague. The A-list cast also includes Rupert Everett as Lord Capulet, Derek Jacobi as the Friar, and Dan Folger as the Apothecary.

Meanwhile, Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward star as Juliet and Romeo, respectively, alongside other up-and-coming talent in the younger roles. Writer and director Timothy Scott Boggart is relatively unknown, while the movie is being distributed by independent film company Briar Entertainment. Notably, Juliet & Romeo ambitiously advertises a scholarly nature, its synopsis claiming that it is "based on the real story that inspired William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
