The romanticized notion of the cowboy, of ranchers who live by their own rules and represent the very idea of freedom, is something shared between Americans and Australians. Around the middle of the 19th century, both countries had an untamed "wild west" that spanned as far as the eye could see, and cattle ranching became a way to "settle" those wild lands. There's a reason why there are so many great Australian westerns, from Jennifer Kent's "The Nightingale" to John Hillcoat's "The Proposition," and those cowboy stories have turned into ranching stories. So of course the land Down Under is getting in on the latest and greatest cowboy-flavored fad, with a Netflix miniseries that clearly looks to be Australia's answer to the Taylor Sheridan juggernaut "Yellowstone."

During the era of network television, shows used to have a shelf-life of at least 10 seasons. Some TV series that were made before the Ott boom continue to enjoy the freedom to adapt and improve over the course of many years, but the same can’t be said about made-for-ott shows, especially the ones on Netflix. Yes, “guilty pleasure content” like Emily in Paris and Elite has benefited from the hate-watch syndrome. However, a lot of really good shows have been unceremoniously axed by the streaming platform before they could find their audience. The one cancellation that hurt viewers the most was Mindhunter. Now, ever since its termination, fans have been clamoring for David Fincher, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and the rest of the team to come together for at least one more season. Like the monkey’s paw curling effect, they did return to Netflix, but just via different projects.

Set against the stunning landscape of Australia’s rugged Northern Territory, Territory follows the high-stakes drama unfolding on Marianne Station, the largest cattle operation in the world.
Created by Ben Davies and Timothy Lee and directed by Greg McLean, this Netflix series pulls viewers into the cutthroat world of ranching royalty, the Lawson family. Ruled by hard-headed patriarch Colin Taylor, the family find themselves locked in a battle for control of their empire following the death of heir Daniel.
Stepping into the central roles, we have Anna Torv as Emily Lawson, married into the family but still needing to prove herself. Her husband Graham, a talented but troubled man, is portrayed by Michael Dorman. And as their son Marshall, dragged back into the family fold, Sam Corlett delivers a star-making performance.Adding complexity are characters like Nolan, an Indigenous station owner played by Clarence Ryan, and the schemes of mining...

Viaplay Results: Focus On Core Ops Working Slowly
Viaplay’s focus on doing what it does best willed out in its latest quarterly results, with total turnover down slightly but turnover in core operations increasing by a similar margin. Since the exit of former CEO Anders Jensen amidst financial turmoil last year, the Scandi outfit has been focused on making far less original content and supercharging sports rights. Today, Q2 turnover was shown to have declined a smidgeon to SEK4.49B ($424M), while core turnover rose by a similar amount to SEK4.29B. In further signs of green shoots a year on from Jensen’s departure, operating income, while still in the red, was only minus SEK70M, compared to minus SEK273M in Q2 2023.
